My first visit to a new place that opened this week. The new owners did a nice job of remodeling with light colors, marble table tops, and a variety of sitting inside and out. At noon I could order from lunch or brunch menu. I'm already planning my next visit. I chose the eggs Benedict which came with perfectly cooked chard with garlic and olive oil and fried red potatoes. The color of the Hollandaise is shown in my photos and was delicious. The eggs were large and cooked perfectly with nice runny yolks. As good as the eggs were, the chard almost stole the show. I never knew chard could taste so good. A mimosa rounded out my meal nicely. The owners family are all there making this place go and very friendly and efficient service. I live here in Fairfax and I'm so happy see this place open. I can't wait to return. read more

First, the prices on yelp are very different from the prices on the menu. Second my friend found a hair in his pasta. Not ideal when the pasta is $24 for lunch. Focaccia was bland and doughy. Wine list is legit and priced accordingly. I won't be back, I've lived in Fairfax for 23 year and have watch some great restaurants come into our town and watched some succeed and some fail. In my humble opinion the restaurants that succeed listen to the locals. $78 for lunch; pasta and two glasses of wine is too much for one person. If your going to make it in this town my advice is to look at our town, the restaurants that are successful and ask the locals what they're looking for read more

Took a chance because our neighborhood favorite next store had a wait. We should have waited. This was not worth the money or the calories. Service was ok if not warm. Menu was interesting but upon closer inspection, after we were told they were out of several items on their opening weekend early on a Saturday night, that our options were very limited. We ordered the mare caldo for a starter which had some nice seafood but served over dry lettuce with a minimal selection of clams and mussels and shrimp. Focaccia bread was a nice touch on the table but severely under seasoned and the olive oil needed salt to make the bread edible. Whatever they're serving for their steak it's NOT a filet. $40 for a tough and stringy piece of meat that was not cooked properly and served well done when it was ordered med rare. The sauce was over salted and wasn't a good pairing. The orchiette pasta was not what was described on the menu as a slow cooked beef. We essentially got ground beef and a basic tomato sauce that was nothing special. I had a few bites but was not encouraged to continue. Ambiance was a bit over the top with marble counter tops paired with plastic chairs....maybe the proper chairs are still enroute. All in all I won't be going back which makes me sad because I was excited to have another option in fairfax. Opening restaurants is no easy task but the options at Gastronomia were very underwhelming. read more

First time here and we loved it. The food is authentic and perfectly done. We ordered the mussels and clams as a shared appetizer and I loved it so much I ordered it as my entree. They have a beautiful dining area. Beautiful Wine selection! We loved the dessert courses and the owner/Chef was so sweet and kind! Staff was attentive! We will be back. Super sweet family-run establishment with handmade pasta. I ordered the pappardelle with sliced trumpet mushrooms and the dish was delicious. The detail of slicing the trumpet mushroom was a nice touch as often times when this type of mushroom is served, it can be overwhelming due to the larger size. Every bite made sense and tasted fantastic. The focaccia bread was fresh and delicious and I enjoyed the light olive oil it was served with. Smart move to not overly salt the bread to allow the diner to control the salt intake (better to under salt than over salt). My fiancé had the ragu and the orecchiette pasta was perfectly made. The sauce was rich but subtle which I preferred, sometimes red sauces can be heavy and overpowering. This lovely, intimate restaurant recently opened and sad to see other yelpers dragging it. Growing pains do exists and learning comes hand and hand with new restaurants. Prices reflected the portions, tastes, and atmosphere as well as the area. Don't Go.. It is too expensive and the staff are rude. $$$$ for a salmon dinner . They don't fit into Fairfax and don't care about how the neighbors feel ( the park, businesses and town hall). The town of Fairfax has other Italian Restaurants that you would please with. read more

Have been here once. Amazing service and very cute place in downtown Fairfax. We were given bread and EVOO, that was a plus. We ordered two pastas. The mushroom papardelle which we were the most excited was most bland tasteless pasta we have ever had, luckily it was not gross. The other one, I believe amatricciana was really good. After an amazing day hike on the Cataract Trail on Mt Tam on Father's Day, the family decided it would be better to get dinner out than try to trek back home to the city.. We came out of the mountain in Fairfax & drove past La Gastronomia trying to decide where to eat. After going back and exploring a couple menus - the pull was to try LaG and we were beyond delighted with our yummy meal, incredible service, and (definitely in comparison to SF prices) wonderful value. As other Yelpers mentioned (we didn't check the reviews until after & am glad we did so the visit was unbiased), this is an adorable family-run establishment with lots of delicious handmade pasta & appetizers. We didn't order any of the secondi - so I can't speak to the bigger/main meat dishes - but everything we had was yummy and we were all pretty much fighting over all the dishes (we ordered a bunch & shared family style on one of the outside tables). For me the killer sauce was from the Guazzeto (seafood appetizer in tomato broth) - I could have eaten that all day long! The Fava beans with pecorino - so simple & so yum. The burrata salad I barely got to taste because all the others devoured it. The summer salad was very simple, verging on plain - but it turned out to be the PERFECT vehicle for that yummy left over in the bowl seafood tomato sauce from the Guazzetto. As someone who has been reducing my intake of processed carbs - I didn't want to load up on the bread as wanted to save for the yummy pasta. Since the market/summer salad needed a little oomph - I realized that I could eat happily all the greens with a delicious dip in the tomato sauce. Never has a plain salad made given me more joy as a healthy way to mop up all that delicious tomato-ness! Dad went crazy over the first bite of the pappardelle w/ tomatoes, the pillowy gnocchi were yum with a hearty ragu, and someone who shall remain nameless was hardly able to share any of the seafood spaghetti (similar to the Guazzetto sauce so I know why). And did I forget to mention how happy the kids were -we off menu ordered one plate of (essentially kids) spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce & one with butter and garlic (yes my kids LOVE Italian food & LOVE garlic). For a mere $10/plate - the whole table got to enjoy two more options! I keep coming back to two words - simply delicious. La Gastronomia was that & much more. It's not trying too hard, it's not too fancy, nor too formal. It's a lovely, warm and incredibly well run family restaurant where everyone pitches in to make sure your meal is a wonderful experience. Anyone who hit an off night or who is too swayed by the negative reviews below should open their eyes & minds and try La Gastronomia... We live in SF and are already excited to drive back and eat there once more after the wonderful first experience we had on Father's Day! Bread was ok very under salted. Filet mignon was not a real filet mignon, was over cooked and tough, and the sauce it was in was over salted. The seafood appetizer is over lettuce? it was poorly seasoned and underwhelming.The Orecchiette pasta tasted like store bought tomato sauce.It was advertised as a slow braised short rib but this was basic ground beef with no flavor. tasted like chef boyardee . Very disappointing. Also of the four people at the table, they were out of two of the 4 things we ordered, at 6 pm on a Saturday evening. The service was attentive but Overall would not come back. Always a great time! Traditional Tuscan dishes influenced by local seasonal ingredients served from the heart! My Mom had two special requests for her visit to the Bay Area this time: a trip to the coast for Oysters and dinner with Elena at her new restaurant. She hadn't seen her since way before the pandemic and was super excited to see the new place. So I made a surprise dinner reservation on July 5th to celebrate her 84th Birthday. Elena and team (Bianca, Gustavo) didn't disappoint! We opted to split the whole roasted branzino, delicious! along with a lovely rose and finished with an outstanding almond cake. What I've always loved about Elena's style, whether it was at Divino in the past or now La Gastronomia, is it's authenticity! As I've said in the past, "this is Elena and her team being exactly where they're supposed to be, doing exactly what they love: creating great food straight from the heart and sharing it with old friends, new friends and well family! We had a great meal from this cute little place earlier this week. The complimentary focaccia was excellent with the Sicilian olive oil on the table. We had the heirloom tomato Caprese salad and it was very good. We split the Porchetta and it was heavenly! The pork was so tender and flavorful the potatoes were the perfect texture. The service was on point as well. So happy that there is a new restaurant of this caliber in Fairfax (and Marin in general). read more

What a great experience and delightful discovery we had at La Gastronomia last evening. Best Italian food we've had in Marin hands down. Buttery smooth polenta with mushrooms; fantastic gnocchi with whole shrimp; succulent tagliatelle bolognese. Pasta Ala Norma was delicious: the pasta was perfectly cooked and embellished with gorgeous, plump Castelvetrano olives. The atmosphere is bright, comfortable and welcoming. We've been to Elena and Gustavo's place multiple times with family and friends. The food has been exceptional, the service great, and the ambience is spot on for an authentic trattoria. I laughed when I read a few reviews that slammed the unsalted focaccia - Tuscan focaccia is traditionally unsalted. Elena has been feeding our family for almost twenty years, with consistent results. I read some one star reviews that are petty and unkind, written by people whose gift it to suck the joy out of every room they enter. Service was impeccable. Our server was attentive friendly and helpful. Complimentary bread to start. It was warm and right off the grill but dry. Yes they gave us olive oil but for me I would have preferred it to be seasoned. We started with the fava beans and slices of pecorino cheese. Delicious. My husband had gnocchi with meat sauce. Really tasty. I had the pasta with pesto, shrimp and zucchini. Shrimp were plump and tasty but the pesto was flat. Maybe they forgot the garlic and salt? I was so excited to try this place, and so disappointed with just about everything. First bad sign was the food remnants and oil stains on the paper menus. (The waiter saw the food on the menu and still passed it to me.) Took them almost 15 minutes to come and ask if we wanted to order a drink. We each ordered a glass of red wine, which came chilled. We sent them back and asked for room temp wine. She said they keep all their reds refrigerated. What?? The Insalata del Mercato was good but nothing special. Had to ask for fresh ground pepper as they don't have it on the table. After the salad, our waiter laid our used cutlery on our bread plates. Didn't expect this for the prices they charge. We both ordered the rack of lamb, medium rare. The meat was cooked medium to medium well and was under-seasoned; the mashed potatoes were barely warm, the spinach was okay. The steak knives they gave us for the lamb were the most flimsy steak knives I've ever used. The affogato was probably the best part of the meal. Service was kinda slow, ambiance was just okay (the lights are too bright in my opinion). Sadly, a one-and-done. read more
