Since we got there before the dining room/ restaurant itself opened we bellied up to the bar and enjoyed happy hour drinks and the meatballs. Once it opened we made our way inside to enjoy our meal. Both of our drinks were well balanced and delicious (I got a Liquid Love and my girlfriend got a strawberry basil Martini). We started with the Ahi tuna tartare with homemade chips. The fish was fresh, the avocado at peak ripeness and the sauce it was in was divine! That was followed by fried squash blossoms filled with cheese (a seasonal delicacy) swimming in a sea of red sauce and cream that worked so well together and while pricey very much worth it in my opinion. A pizza with multiple toppings, thin crust that was tasty but nothing to write home about. We ended the meal with tiramisu, heavy on the espresso but balanced out by the rich dark chocolate layer and the cocoa powder dusted on top. All in all a well rounded and balanced meal that pays homage to classic dishes but also takes advantage of seasonal ingredients in creative and delicious ways!

The eatery has inside and outside dining with the inner dining smaller than the outside area. The extended dining area has both heat and covers available. Street parking is available so be warned but the this task is worth your effort. We chose to dine outside for the inner area was at capacity... a good sign. The customer service was outstanding beyond measure. We never saw our cups empty and at the end of our meal when we were selecting desserts, they packaged our leftovers. This gesture had never been performed in all of my experiences... bravo. The food was not simply made and put on our dishes but was created with the upmost heart. She presented the wrong screen and I paid the bill and tried to add a tip. She gave me a look! She reset the screen and asked me to do it again "correctly". I still added the tip but I was not satisfied with anything. I'll go back because the food is good. But, not on Fridays, even if very early. And always with a person to watch the car when I double park, like so many others do. Similar quality issues with their standard pasta and seafood dishes most of the time. Execution issues include over cooking seafood and very bland sauces. Pastas often get overcooked as well. The service was always wonderful, as is the environment. It was one of the original 'no-smoking' restaurants, before the ban. There was also a no-furs policy, Andy is a great animal lover. He has his own ranch- a vast number of vegetables in the cooking come from there. The French breakfast radishes were stunningly good. I could eat a bushel. Turns out I ate there my first night in town (I had just started at a little start-up company that had been purchased by Steve Jobs from George Lucas). Lo and behold, Mr Lucas was sitting at the counter and about 1/3 of Santanna was sitting at the round table in the window. Welcome to Marin.
