Finally, after years of eating here (a couple times a year) we actually had a good waitress in February; a white woman. Every time we go to La Isla (or any of the local Mexican restaurants, Real Hacienda too) we expect to have our waiter/waitress bring our food and we never see them again. Can' even flag them down, even to get our check so we can leave. Hope they keep this girl. Food is ok. Nothing to rave about. Kind of bland, but that seems to be the theme of food in Indiana, bland. #1, Beef Enchiladas, and Pollo Tapatio are our favorites. Chips, salsa, and cheese dip are fantastic. Always fast service.

Ever since they moved locations, food and service quality have gone downhill. Multiple times recently, I placed orders ahead of time only to find out when I go pick the food up, they haven't even sent the order to the kitchen. I'd be fine if it were a one time thing but this has literally happened 4 times in the last two months. read more

Regardless we found this restaurant to be nothing more than average. The service was excellent! The dinning area & restrooms clean. The food was average at best. We were expecting amazing after reading all the reviews, but we didn't have anything worth raving over. We expected delishously home made chips, but got the standard typical chips served at Mexican restaurants. This was the first time ever we asked for top shelf tequila in our Margaritas and were denied. We were told they only had the lower quality brand & one way to make the drink. Again, our cocktails weren't bad, just average. If you are looking for a safe, average dinner - Isla is your place. If you want to be wowed... Keep hunting. read more

I've been a regular customer for 20 or so years and was treated horribly by the owner today. We placed a $98 to go order and they put refried beans instead of black beans we specifically ordered on my daughter's nachos. I asked them if they could please remake them and the owner said no they can't because we ordered refried. We didn't. We had it written down and read it to them word for word. I ask again and he says he knows he's right and shows me a paper where he wrote beans. He says I can only order again, pay for that order, and it will take 20 minutes (while the rest of the $98 order goes cold) because they are busy. This is for literally chips, cheese, black beans (everything else was given to us on the side so it wouldn't wilt/melt on the way). I left angry thinking I will not come back to this place I've been going to for two decades. A family member decided to go back. The owner said they didn't have black beans today and remade them without. So the owner decided on the phone "any bean will do" and then doubled down on this when I asked about it. If he said "we don't have those today" we'd have just ordered them without. If he said "I'm sorry. I screwed up we'll remake them", fine. Instead it was "No, you're wrong! Pay me again and wait!" and he's lost multiple long time customers. Even if he believes the customer is wrong in this situation, I don't see not remaking something that costs under $1 to make considering they just paid you $98. They have a beautiful new building and everyone really seems to enjoy this location. I've picked up that almost all of the Mexican restaurants in Terre Haute are owned by the same people, which is fine and explains why they are all about the same. We had excellent service and the wait time was reasonable. I ordered a shrimp steak fajita that was delicious and my date had taco asada, which we didn't expect to be only filled with steak, but was still good. We came on a Sunday afternoon when there were maybe 6 other families here (basically the place was empty!) . We waited 5 min to be seated and then once we were seated we waited 45 min for our food to be served. Once it was served not only was it wrong but the fajitas weren't grilled enough for my stepson. The rice and beans were subpar. We had to ask multiple times for drink refills and chips and salsa. We didn't even see our server other than to take our initial order and had to ask multiple other servers for help. I'm not one to post negative reviews, or many reviews period but the service really is the downfall here. Wow. I would have put 0 stars but I wasn't able to. First thing I have to say about la Isla is I used to love their food. However now I have changed my mind. I have gotten food poisoning twice now. This time I called just to let them know(I didn't ask for a refund or anything) and i got told by the "manager" that no one else had gotten sick so I must be lying. Then he proceeded to tell me to go to the hospital and they would happily pay my medical bills. I have insurance and informed them of this. And they toldtme because I got it delivered how do I know that it was them that got me sick and tried to pin the blame on the delivery driver, then they hung up on me. Really, really, really good Mexican food. The service is very good, and the food always comes out quickly after the orders are placed. My family and I have tried many of the dishes there, and have never had anything that we didn't love! The only downside that I can think of is that I wish they had more of a variety of hot sauces. They only have two on the tables; a red habanero sauce and a green habanero sauce, and they are both far too hot for me! Six thumbs up! read more

they took our order wrong to begin with. Also charged us a dollar for taco sauce that was barely drizzled on the burrito. Charge almost four dollars for the smallest thing of queso ever. On top of that they charged a carryout fee and didnt even tell us over the phone that there was a fee for coming to pick it up. Which pick up is the only option we have since theres a PANDEMiC going on!!!!! Worst experiance ever and very shady buisness i will not be coming back any time soon. I found a half dead (or still wiggling but stunned) cockroach in my menu recently here. When we flagged down the waiter and made him aware of the situation the only thing he said was "for real?" took my menu and then acted like nothing happened. I won't be back to this location. When there's one cockroach you can see there 100 more you can't. So no thanks. Rumor has had it for YEARS that this place is pretty nasty anyways. The menu was so worn or bleached out--could hardly read it. Food was mediocre. My husband ordered the grilled chicken salad, was chicken on top of a bunch of lettuce, no salad dressing. Taco salad had only lettuce, beef, and a little cheese and sour cream--no sauce or dressing of any sort.
