I will continue to review Taco Casita 5-stars as long as possible. I had received some good news at work. Other friends and family had other obligations. So, my chance to indulge and celebrate meant there's only one place....Taco Casita. It amazes me the different personalities which patronize. While waiting on my food to be prepared, I just kept scanning the dining room. There was a father with his 7-8 year old daughter. She was giddy eating chips and cheese. The father was chowing down. Another corner had a college age couple enjoying conversation whilst nibbling their food. There was a clean cut family of 6 on some tables. A fellow walked in wearing a muscle shirt of some sort. Another customer appeared like a weary Fed Ex driver getting Carryout. My Red (for Ed) sweatshirt kinda stood out. Almost everyone in there had one mission...to eat some cheap Mexican food and get their tummies full. Personally, it cleanses the sinuses for me. Some might say it will do other sorts of body cleanses! It's always a cheap spot to grab some grub that you know the flavor. It's not fancy. But good to eat. read more

A Terre Haute landmark for generations...this divey little taco place is different from anywhere you have ever been. It has a jukebox, tons of plants, and always has lines. The food here is so reasonable and at times can be a lengthy wait. Due to living in Indianapolis we have to make a road trip to visit! Pros of this place is a one of a kind taco, crispy as can be shells that are light and fluffy and the meat I can never put my finger on---but it is amazing! Cons---at times there can be a long line, and it is a less than desirable exterior. I must add that if you haven't tried a Taco Casita taco yet; make that long deserved road trip! I really did not like the food here. The meat was bland and lukewarm. I asked for a bowl and the girl stared at me blankly and informed me they only had beef, not other meat options. That is fine as I enjoy beef. She proceeded to ask me what I wanted on it and I just said the normal toppings for a bowl, whatever is fine. She blanked stared at me again and ran me up. Total was $4, which is a steal im thinking. I get home and find out the bowl was just beef, a few tiny pieces of lettuce, some shredded cheese, and five HUGE pieces of tomato. I was not impressed. It was all soggy and not edible to me. I did not feel well after eating there. read more

Service. Lady up front is rude, and everybody is loud. I asked for a rag to wipe down my sticky table, and they said they would do it because i'm "incapable". Food is good, but not worth coming because of the workers being rude. Tables need cleaning!!! read more

I don't care about the atmosphere here, I just love this place. It's one of those things you just crave. Both Castia locations are sketchy but lovable. The feast I am posting was $20 and that's just crazy. So much delicious food. I describe it as a high school lunch, but who cares? Good it's good. We got an enchilada deluxe combo- two beef enchiladas, taco, beans and chips with cheese, four tacos, fiesta nachos, large chips and cheese, large beans, 3 sour creams and a ranch- plus two 32 oz drinks....literally $20. Insane. This place is like a White Castle, you love it or you hate it. It's a college favorite of mine, so it's a must have when I go to Terre Haute. read more

This place has me torn down the middle. On the one hand, it's dirty and shady. In fact, it's quite fitting that the letters have fallen off the sign and it now reads "Taco Casi," which translates into "almost taco." But, on the other hand, there's something about the food. Because despite the fact that I'd normally never eat in a place like this, I keep coming back. Like an addict. Anyway, you have to trust me that if you have a hangover or you're sad, a wet plate and two beef enchiladas on the side will wipe away your blues. Trust me. You'll thank me later. By the way, as someone who grew up in the southwest less than an hour from Mexico, I'm not exactly sure where the idea for the Inca-esque decor made in China came from, but in some weird way, it's perfectly fitting. Once the place was reopened after the Covid restrictions eased, I was anxious to return. As I've posted before, I've eaten here since I was a child in the early 70's. I was shocked that the 3rd St. location closed, but had been going to the Wabash Ave. one since college days. I generally try to get there every weekend. I was happy to see the again after restrictions relaxed, mask or not, we're not here for that. The first few visits were exactly as I expected, but then I was surprised. I walked in to find the place cleaner than I had ever seen it. I looked up. The ceiling tiles were new. The decor was slightly "off". The droopy, dead or dying plants were all still there, though. Usually, when one walks in, they smell the food. Not this time. But as I said, it was different, and "too clean", if you get my meaning. It was disturbing. Yet it was busy, for an off-hour. However, the food was bland. I ordered X-hot and wet. Got neither. Sauce was provided upon request. But the food had almost no flavor. Service was quite slow, but I wrote it off to how unbelievably busy they were. I was quite disappointed with it. The next Saturday, though, things were back to normal, food-wise. It was great; just as it should have been. Exactly what I expected. I was surprised to see the cut in hours, though, as they are now closing at 8 PM, even on weekends. There is absolutely nothing like this place. All of the food is microwaved and sometimes cold but that's why it's incredible. Nothing compares to the absolutely strange yet comforting atmosphere in the dining room. The food is unapologetic and crude to the point where you find yourself craving it again and again. We have been going to Taco Casita for about 20 years now. It has gone up and down over the years. As of late it is at the worst ever. We have to check our order before we leave. There is almost always something missing from the order. A couple of examples from tonight. The nacho cheese is watery and you can't eat it. It wouldn't stay on a chip, just pours back in the cup. They didn't put sour cream on side items but charged for it. The mild sauce that was charged was a small side cup for a taco salad. I know these are small things. But previously we had nacho cheese that was a clump of burned cheese. Taco bugers with no meat. All in the last few months. I truly hope y'all get their stuff back together. My family would hate to stop going there because it has been a tradition for so long our grandchildren have started going as well. read more

Recently, Taco Casita underwent a major change, probably due to the pandemic. Be it a change in ownership, management or just plain greed, the quality of the food has become abysmal. My wife and I visited today and were highly disappointed with the quality of the food. Unmelted cheese, mild sauce that burnt my wife's mouth, smaller portions than in the past. Not to mention that almost all of the employees were improperly wearing their COVID masks (wearing them below their noses). My days of patronizing Taco Casita have, sadly, come to an end. I don't know of any other place to get anything under a dollar, but here you have choices. Three to be exact, granted I have not tried anything but the regular hard shell taco, but still ,choices. I think for .79 it is a good deal. They are even cheaper by the dozen. I have had the wet plate and the wet burrito, but the regular taco is my pick. You have a choice of hot or mild or extra hot. Ok Here's the deal Terre Haute Folk... Taco Casita's USED to be Taco Tico's YEARS ago... (Original chain started in Wichita Kansas) I grew up eating at the very first ones way back when... Then the chain got sold... Pepsico took it over... and it all went to hell! Complete menu change... no more wet plates.. sauce (that SUCKED) in packages.. terrible food! The Terre Haute locations (THANK GOD) were not sold to Pepisco, but bought by an individual who changed the name to Taco Casita.. but left all the recipes and menus the same... Imagine my delight when I moved to Indiana... happened to drive by one... and said to myself.. DAMN! THAT building looks JUST LIKE an old Taco Tico! Stopped... went inside.. and there it all was... the OLD ORIGINAL Taco Tico menu... Wet plates! Sanchos! Your choice of sauce ON THE FOOD! OMG! We ate until we were stuffed. I do NOT stop through Indiana without stopping here! When I later moved to Chicago, and had to travel to back and forth to Evansville several times... I'd get 4 to 6 uncooked Sancho Wet Plates to go (sauce on the side) and pack em in a cooler on ice to take em back to Chicago! An anachronistic fast-food Tex-Mex joint that has persisted through the decades. It definitely has a "dive-y" feel, but the food is quick, cheap and delicious. Don't be intimidated by the appearance, try the wet plate or enchilada platter. The food is cooked with peanut oil. read more

This place is absolutely fantastic, but not for the purposes of eating. It is important to mention that I make habit out of finding the most questionable-looking Mexican restaurant while on road trips. I think the best place I've found so far included having to physically LEAVE the building and walk around back to find the outside "restrooms". But this isn't about that place. This is about Taco Casita. This place was so perfect-looking, I had to do a double-take and turn around. Upon first view, you notice the chipped stucco exterior, the empty parking lot, and the missing letters on the wall that now spell "TACO CASI". The best part, though, is the sign that faces the street. You see, once upon a time this was another fast food establishment. Taco Bell? Taco King? Taco Cabesa? Unfortunately, the former business decided to take it's gigantic sign with it, leaving only a bare post. Taco Casita, seeing themselves as problem solvers, decided instead to hand-paint a teeny-tiny sign on what would have originally held the much bigger sign to said post. It's adorable and hilarious and my entire reason for stopping. Upon entering the restaurant, I am greeted by what I imagine to be the entire population of Terre Haute's senior citizens. It's quiet. A little too quiet. I'm pretty sure that man in the wheel chair is asleep. I take a look at the menu (and corresponding "food photography") and make my selection. The food comes out fast. A little too fast. I'm pretty sure the kitchen consists solely of two microwaves and a stockpile of paper plates. The food itself was tolerable at best and the atmosphere a bit unsettling, however the staff were ready and waiting. I probably won't be back to Taco Casita, at least not to eat, but it does instill a certain kind of "charm." Thanks for the memory! read more

However, what they do not realize is maintaining the same building for decades is what has helped to keep prices low and quality high. I love this place by far more than the majority of my family members. I also acknowledge that if you didn't grow up with it, it's kind of gross. If you did grow up with it, there is nothing else in the world that could even compare to it. It's just that kind of thing, you know? Anyway, it is the home of the Wet Plate, so there's that. I actually prefer the Deluxe Enchilada plate, though. And I dream of those nasty little tacos. I can eat like a billion. I miss their old juke box. The modern one they have now is just not the same. I'm writing this review as we are still sitting at the table. My only hope is that I can reach someone before they come in. We ordered the "famous" wet plate and the combination plate, and two large drinks. It came to $13.xx. The environment is not clean or appealing at all, but we figured we would let the food do the talking. As soon as our tray arrived in the counter we were tempted to ask for a refund and walk out. Even though we ordered different plates, we both received stale tortillas filled with beans and beef. Tacos, burritos, sanchos, enchiladas, all the same. The only difference was that some had lettuce on top and some was drenched in sauce. The wet plate was so filled with sauce that it sloshed off the sides of the plate was we moved the tray. They had microwaved everything so long that the beans became rubbery and bubbled/burnt along the edges. We are our stale chips dipped in the enchilada sauce to curve our hunger. As we were finishing up someone turned their jukebox on high to old country songs. Since you are in a small room you can't even hear each other talk. We had to go to the bathroom before we even threw away our trash, I wouldn't be surprised if we leave here with food poisoning. read more

This was my first visit here, and it was interesting. See pictures for their menu. Upon entering, one would get scared. The decor is old and the menu looks like it hasn't been updated, edited or fixed since 1985. However, after getting over my fears... The service was definitely friendly and polite. Food orders made to order (very short wait though). Soft drink refills $0.26. Food, definitely priced affordable. I've been told by locals that their Board of Health reviews are also great. And most importantly, the food was very tasty. Actually went back for a repeat order after confirming that it was all delicious. For what it is, as long as you know what you're getting in to, certainly 4-stars. I'd happily return. read more

Good thing they serve the food on crappy plates with compartments, that is the only thing that keeps the meal from being a puddle of grease. There is nothing redeeming about the food or the service, much less the hilarious nature of the building itself. It is a step down from Taco Bell and that says quite a lot. If you enjoy a greasy puddle of food that has obviously been micro-waved and you want Styrofoam plates and plastic forks that bend with no weight at all...this is the place for you! Do yourself a favor and go to any other Mexican restaurant in TH, INCLUDING TACO BELL, if you want to eat Mexican food. No food served here will resemble any food found in Mexico.
