Unbelievable! I was born and raised in Southern California, with mexican food on every corner, with tastes from all parts of Mexico and all price levels. And, I lived in the Sierra Madre for a time, so I have a moderately good palate for the many flavors of Mexico. I especially hunt for mole. There are all types and flavors of mole. But, I have to say this was probably the best mole I have ever eaten [yes, in Joseph, Oregon]. The chicken mole enchiladas melt in your mouth. And, their special homemade bottled salsa is like icing on the cake. And, the frijoles refritos (refried beans) were perfectly cooked and spiced. Wow! Food wasn't bad. The waiter was entertaining for my 3 yo granddaughter. What our group had issues with it seems he was holding staff meeting behind our table - it was annoying. Really pushed this homemade hot sauce - it was hot but good . Ok experience until we got the check. We were waiting a while to get our check , granddaughter was fussing. No itemized receipt . My daughter paid and we were going to pay her . When her handed her the little machine to pay all it had was the total. They charged about a 18% gratuity for 6 people and a child. Nowhere did it say on the menu or website that they add this to a group. So they got a double tip pretty shady. Would have gone back but they had closed - beware. We won't go there again. read more

The food is overpriced and subpar. The head waiter has a serious attitude problem. We gave him the benefit of doubt on our first visit because everyone has bad days, but we found out on our second visit that he's just a rude guy. I can't review the food because my family was treated so rudely on the phone and then in person at restaurant, we left. We called ahead and they said a 30 minute wait. We got there in about 10 minutes and when we went to check in, we were treated rudely and reminded 30 minutes wasn't up. So my son went inside to get some beverages at the bar while we waited. and was told again he had to wait. None is this would be a big deal if it wasn't done in such a rude manner. We live here for six months over the summer and are frequently asked about where to eat. This restaurant will never be suggested again. Seriously, how hard is it to just be polite? A polite explanation would have gone a long way and we would have patiently waited. But three strikes in one visit and you're out. read more

I went here during a vacation with my wife and we rented a cabin. When you're in a small town, you get worried if the food will be any good. Now, I think this is the best Mexican food I've had compared to anywhere I've been in Boise, ID. I had the Arroz con steak. The flavor was amazing! It had a lot more spice and flavor than what most restraints have and it was terrific. I admit that I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food, and I have no idea if something is authentic food. I've learned that I have a tendency to pick things categorized as Tex Mex. I have no idea if this place is Tex Mex or authentic Mexican, but I can say I think you'll love it. I was visiting this place with my autistic son, the waiter, who seemed to be the manager as well, was very rude and impatient. He was unhelpful, and seemed angry and hostile, when we asked to be moved inside. I asked to go inside because it was too hot for my son who gets overheated and sunburned easily. I know it's a lot of work during COVID times to be cleaning two tables but a little consideration and understanding can go a long way. read more

Headed into Joseph as it was too cold and wet to cook at our camp, and thought this would be a good option. What a home run! Unlike most Mexican restaurants, you get an enormous portion and take half home. More reasonable portion sizes, prices to match. The meat for the fillings could be a bit more seasoned, but it's easier to add than take away. Service was outstanding throughout! The final piece was the owner, who was also waiting tables and tending bar while short staffed in a standing-room restaurant, took the time to thank each patron for their business. Stopped in on our way out of Wallowa Lake and regret would be an understatement. As soon as we stepped in the door and told them our party size(12) the waiter rudely rolled his eyes at us. It wasn't even a busy afternoon as there was only one other party there. When he was taking our orders he was very impatient and rude when we would ask questions. When we got our drinks the cokes were watered down and tasted terrible. When we asked if we could get new drinks the waiter then again was rude and impatient as we explained the drinks were not good. We stopped in on the recommendation of a friend. Let me tell you, that friend was not wrong! This restaurant and the staff are absolutely top notch! The food is very flavorful and the presentation was beautiful. We were there on a Friday night and it filled up fast. We had a child with us four adults and the staff was extremely cognizant of her needs/wants. We have eaten in many restaurants and I have to say that La Laguna in Joseph, OR is in the top 5 in my book. Staff was very knowledgable of all plates, and answered all questions extremely well. The restaurant was very busy, but all took the time to make our dinner enjoyable. From joking with us from the very beginning of our drink/appetizer, showing us how to properly use their smokey oil sauce, and to asking if the child could have a popsicle for desert (quietly in her father's ear). Yes, we bought bottles of their smokey oil sauce to take home. I can't wait to come back and eat here again! Prices are very good but the food and people are the BEST! Thank you La Laguna!! A great surprise. Traveling through Joseph we decided to give it a chance looking for something safe. The staff was exceptional - made us feel very welcome (other places in Joseph seem to give you a sideways look if you are from out of town). Food was good and drinks were also very good. We ate here for our 45th wedding anniversary. The waiter was really fun. We brought our dog and sat outside. We assured our waiter we brought bags to pick up dog poop in case of an accident. The chips and salsa were good. We asked for extra salsa because it was so good. We ordered the fried cheese tortilla. Yum! I ordered a combination plate #17, I think. The chili relleno was very good, the beef enchilada had good flavor as well, although I expected shredded beef instead of ground beef. The tamale had very dense masa and little meat and I didn't really care for it. The beans and rice tasted great as well. We liked the smoky hot sauce in an oil base. It wasn't very hot, just very flavorful. We bought a bottle of that to take home. We had a very pleasant experience. The food had good flavors and the service was good. The only negative is they charge you 3.75% if you use a credit or debit card. Hardly anyone carries cash anymore and any business has to pay credit card fees. A business counts that as a deduction when doing taxes and doesn't charge their customers that fee. That's just one of the expenses of having a business. That seemed cheap to me. But I still gave it five stars. read more

We weren't in a hurry and our waiter was very entertaining. I didn't see anyone else working except for the busser so I think that would explain the chaotic and random nature of the service. Beyond impressed! We are visiting from out of town and have had many meals out and this has by far been our best experience. Both severs on this afternoon were attentive and prompt but they went beyond that. One gentleman used his Donald Duck voice to entertain our little ones and the other brought out "Mexican Ketchup" which meant ketchup in a little gun. They paid special attention to our children which made the whole dining experience very enjoyable. We have never had such impeccable service with our children. Additionally the food was exceptional. I had the verde pork burrito and my husband the la Laguna best burrito and we were both satisfied without feeling overly full. Favors were desirable. We spent three days in Joseph and this was our favorite spot! We had the fish and shrimp tacos and they are delicious! I don't expect great seafood this far inland, but I was impressed. I usually don't find great Mexican anywhere in Oregon, but this place is definitely the exception. The decor is very traditional, clean, and colorful. The waiter greets you like family, and followed by some recommendations on drinks and food. Once you take the first bite you'll be taken to a trip to our neighbors down south.
