I read the reviews here and decided to give La Maison a try for breakfast. We are definitely glad we did because the food was amazingly good! They started us off with sliced bananas n sugar n cream, which was a total surprise (maybe we got someone's order?). I had the "Paris" omelette with brie cheese and prosciutto wrapped on top and a pair of the BEST ENGLISH MUFFINS I've ever had! My fiance had the banana french toast and she was pretty much in heaven. Even the tea and coffee were worth remarking about. Great service & great food! Everything is scratch made and cooked to order, you couldn't ask for more in a place. My wife and I appreciated the fact that when they were completely booked they put us on a call list so we could come back for our brunch. We both ordered Benedict dishes and they're almost more than one hungry person can eat. The food was unbelievably good, and we were jealous that we don't have a restaurant like this closer to home! The hollandaise sauce is scratch made too, which is unheard of these days in any sort of diner! The price was a little expensive compared to what we're used to. But in all honesty, this is quality food that gets presented to you. When we left, we had 0 regrets about what we ordered and how much we spent. We even picked up some goodies at the register before we left so we could have some delicious snacks for our 4 hour drive home! When we come back, this place has our business for sure! Been here twice in a few years, since we rarely make it to Newport from Portland. It is the best food we've had on the coast, hands down. Everything is made from scratch, fresh, the proportions and flavors are perfect, servings are large, prices are great. We had a chocolate eclair (best I ever had, no contest), sausage breakfast sandwich (again - homemade english muffin, cheese folded onto a perfectly cooked omelet, perfect thickness of well season sausage), crepe plate (also excellent, hollandaise sauce was a really nice touch, and proportioned well) and a few pastries to go. The cinnamon roll was amazing, they packed enough gooey sweetness in to go right up to the line of too much without crossing over. The owner and younger girl who was our server were both warm, friendly, and clearly passionate about what they are doing. You can see and taste the pride that goes into their food. La Maison is truly a gem, and the highlight of our trip to Newport. If it were here in Portland, we would be enthusiastic regulars, and I have no doubt there would be a line out the door. My husband and I found this restaurant on Yelp. The reviews were fantastic and we were NOT disappointed. This is a small place so don't be in a rush (under 10 minutes) to get your food. But the food was delicious. Service was friendly. Bloody Mary was wonderful! All the food I saw other people order looked good too. Great food! Meh service. A true french experience. We came in at 11:30 hungry for breakfast but they stop serving breakfast at 11. We opted to stay for lunch but two other groups in the same predicament opted to find another breakfast-offering establishment. I ordered a maple bar and the Monte Cristo. The maple bar, normally an exquisite specimen of bread and frosting, was injured by the addition of vanilla pudding in between two layers of perfect pastry. The result was sweetness overload and the magnificent pastry was upstaged by a weaker character (pudding). The Monte was spectacular. Hand cut meat, broiled gruyere on two layers, thick cuts of hearty bread perfectly grilled to be the foundation for meats and cheese. The service was either novice or over busy or both. And I might be jaded because I was REALLY looking forward to breakfast. But my water glass stood empty for awhile and some miscommunications with the waitstaff made the service a little frustrating. I'd definitely come back, though. This little niche of excellent food overcomes all other errors. read more

We've been coming here for 3 or 4 years whenever we come to Newport. The pastries are lovely, and the breakfast is OK, but not great. In the past, the two owners have always been there. The husband cooks the eggs and the wife (who I think does the amazing pastries) also serves. It has always been a nice atmosphere and made up for the mediocre eggs. They bring you nice bananas with cream and hazelnuts. Today I went with my dad and it was the same guy, but another lady was the waitress. She was nice, but she didn't seem able to control the situation. My eggs were pretty greasy, but I tried to let the oil pool to one side and just eat the tops of the eggs and enjoy my artichokes and mushrooms. OK. Not great. People say French, but I think if it were really french, they wouldn't need so much grease and wouldn't overcook things so much. My dad likes his eggs really soft and it was overcooked and he sent it back because the outside was REALLY overcooked, while the inside was raw. (Probably it was cooked on a very hot skillet.) The next one wasn't any better and the chef came out, yelled at my dad, started taking the omelette in his hands and throwing it on the plate and yelling at my dad and throwing the omelette around, pointing out that the inside was totally uncooked as if that made up for the fact the outside was overcooked. He told my dad he had to pay for it and he better eat it. It was one of the most uncomfortable situations I've been in in a very long time. I was frankly shocked at his behaviour It is really a shame. There isn't a great breakfast place in Newport. I really wish there was. But we won't go back here. It was, frankly, shocking. read more

Upon entering the angry man working the floor on Saturday morning yelled across the dining room accusing me of poor parking. What he didn't know is that in the car was my chemo cancer mom and newborn baby, I wanted to check to see how long the wait would be before I had them walk in the wind and rain. There were lots of open tables when we arrived (for reference, there was also a party of nine that arrived just after us, so a total of 2 parties waiting). We stuck around for about 15 minutes, but the hostess/waitress/barista was more concerned with getting the party of nine seated (she told us this a couple times). There were only two staff members working. The hostess, and the cook who was also busing tables. Understaffed for Sunday morning breakfast. We decided to leave after noticing that no one that was seated had their food or drinks, and the hostess/waitress/barista had a pile of tickets she was trying to get to. Holy bad customer service batman! We actually didn't encounter any rudeness, just other stuff. The other reviews that talked about waiting times and poor organization were spot on. My husband and I went there today, Saturday 2/20, for lunch. There was 1 girl working as waitress, cashier, and busing tables. Which honestly wouldn't have been an issue for anyone else since there were only 4 tables, including us. But this poor girl, she wouldn't last 1 day in a real restaurant. She has absolutely no sense of prioritization of tasks, which is probably why people have stories of waiting long periods for service. She forgot one of the most simple things in sit-down food service, bringing our drinks, which was just water and iced tea, not hard to remember and most places automatically bring water anyway. I watched her bounce from task to task with no reason or order, leaving tasks unfinished and people's orders forgotten. This also included watching her handle dirty dishes, then touch/slice a baguette of bread, then handle money and pick up something off the floor and then take plates of food out to customers all without washing her hands. It was gross. The whole time this girl moved about without reason the cook and the dish washer chatted in the kitchen area right behind the counter, and spent a ridiculous amount of time lining a single small cabinet with paper. This also resulted in us waiting a very long time for our 1 sandwich we ordered. I seriously feel bad for this girl. She really hasn't been given much direction, seems to lack common sense, and doesn't seem to be getting any help from her coworkers. Our sandwich, the Monte Cristo, was only OK. The pasta salad it came with was pretty good. The pastry we ordered was amazing, but they dont make them there, they order them in. I dont think I'll come back. The food isn't worth the waiting and disorganization. Now if I could rate the person they get the pastries from, 5 stars for that person! read more

If you are looking for a non touristy place on the coast with delicious food, this is it. It is a little spendy for breakfast, but I feel it is worth the extra price. I ordered one of the eggs benedict and asked for my eggs to be poached hard because I'm not a big yoke fan, and was a little taken aback when the waitress asked me if that meant I wanted hard boiled eggs on my benedict and a little disappointed when they were served to me nowhere close to hard poached, but they rest of the service was great and the food was still tasty, so I'm going to overlook that other stuff. If you are really hungry and aren't in a big hurry, this is a great place to get a very yummy, decadent meal. I highly recommend the banana french toast. read more
