I review restaurants with my OAT method: Overall experience - My husband and I were making our way up the coast after staying at Heceta Head lighthouse. We were told that Ona was the chef's restaurant and wanted to come check it out. Appearance - We recommend sitting outside on their patio. Since it was cool they had the heaters running and on warmer days they can open up the garage doors. Taste - I ordered the crab cakes and that is what is truly giving this a 5/5!! I wish I ordered more. They were so yummy! I also got a bowl of the clam chowder that was great. My husband ordered the albacore steak sandwich and said it had a large piece of fish with good seasoning but mentioned he wouldn't order it again. We happened to be there during happy hour and wanted to try oysters for the first time. Let's just say it was a taste of the ocean and will be our last :/ Oysters are just not for us! I've heard that oysters can be seasoned and spruced up to help add more flavor, but these were not. I wonder if it would have helped us enjoy them more? read more

We ordered two meals for take out but got charged 20% gratuity. I thought that was odd since we didn't receive any table service. The girl on the front desk appeared struggling with entering our order. Another staff had to assist her and asked her if she knew what she was doing. I asked for a receipt and the girl stated that she couldn't find the option to email the receipt. Luckily the system remembered my email and automatically sent the receipt. That's when I saw the 20% gratuity added on our to-go order. We drove back to the hotel and ate our meals. The pork chop was decent but overpriced. The mashed potatoes were very bland and runny. The fries were too thin and tough. The burger was acceptable but overpriced as well. I wonder if the food would have tasted better if we dined in. Oh WOW we had a super late lunch and we were all hangry - a quick look up for spots in the area led us here and we were very pleased. So late tha we could have annoyed the waitress but she was happy to wait on us and not fake - we had local beer on tap but I've forgotten - 4 different ones, all good - husband wanted shrimp roll but it came out as a salad but he was happy with it and didn't correct it - I ordered the beet salad which was delicious and had been craving prawns so I ordered a few on the side. Kids (16 and 19) were absolutely quiet scarfing down their burgers and both finally looked up and said, "that was good" " yeah it was" so we were so happy with our meal, the service, the location - great meal - wish this restaurant was at home! First time here. Made reservations for Valentine's Day dinner. Arrived and were promptly seated. Our server, Hannah, came for our order promptly. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. The service and food were excellent. It's a very nice, cozy restaurant, although a bit noisy. We both started with the half Caesar salads. Fresh, crispy amd just the right amount of dressing with a perfect tartness. We also each had wine. I did white, my wife did red. Her Revelry Cabernet from Walla Walla was exceptional. As is our custom, we split our entree. We tried the Ona Pasta and it, too, was excellent. Amazing flavor from the saffron sauce, which we found out is the owner's sauce they have been making since day one. Since it was Valentine's Day (and we had split an entree), we tried the cheesecake. Also excellent flavor and not heavy. It was the perfect end. I risked it and also got a coffee. It is drip coffee, so I was tentative. But it was full bodied, flavorful and not bitter. I found out they use Puff Coffee from Portland, which is roasted in small batches. Well worth it (it was $5, but I got a free refill). All in all, this was a great dinner spot. Service was great and space was comfortable and subdued. There did seem to be a fruit fly problem. It was a little annoying while we ate. The food was good. I had the seafood with linguine. They were able to make it without cream or salmon. My husband had the rib eye steak. He had ordered it medium rare and it came out well-done. Our server immediately put in an order for another, which came out correct. The prices seemed much higher than expected based on similar meals in the area. read more

One of the best meals we've had this year! Started off with half a dozen small oysters from Washington that were AMAZING . Then Julie had the clam chowder. After that, we had the smoked salmon salad and the mataki mushroom pate. They gave us their sourdough for Julie and had a really tasty gluten-free bread for me. We ended the meal with sorbet for me and rose/coco-nib ice cream for Julie. Our waiter made sure we had everything we needed. Sitting on the outdoor patio was beautiful. Stopped in for a bite after spending time at the nearby Yachats Recreation Area. We were greeted as we walked in and seated immediately. It was around 3:30 in the afternoon so they were in-between lunch and dinner. Staff was preoccupied with prepping for their dinner rush. It was a Saturday, so we weren't too mad about it. Our server was still friendly and somewhat timely with service. We ordered a cup of clam chowder, half Caesar salad, calamari and Irish cream mousse cake for dessert. My husband also ordered a pint of beer. We shared everything and paid about $75. Seemed pretty steep! The clam chowder was delicious! Very creamy with a perfect blend of ingredients. The piece of bread it came with was soft with a nice soft pat of butter. Love it when the butter served is soft and spreadable. We weren't fans of the calamari. The breading was too puffy and the Asian-inspired sauce just didn't pair well with the seafood. It was a bit too spicy for my liking as well. The Caesar salad was super tangy. Not my favorite Caesar dressing. The romaine was nice and fresh, and we appreciated the lemon wedge served with it. The Irish cream mousse cake was divine! We both absolutely loved it. So creamy and the perfect amount of booziness. Overall, we enjoyed two of the four items ordered. The bill was pretty steep for food received. I've visited this restaurant on several occasions. They have amazing service and great food. A beautiful coastal location. The menu has to compete with this great atmosphere. It does .... This was my last night on the Oregon coast till November. I wanted to have a nice meal. My friends and I ordered the calamari..... and their delicious warm bread and butter with pesto for starters... I went crazy and ordered a mezcal margarita (wasn't on the menu). We were a party of three. So we ordered two half beet salads .... the soup of the day ...oysters.... A very ""PLAIN"" hamburger medium well with just the bun. (Seriously)... a the crab cakes.... It all came together... We had a wonderful experience... terrific knowledgeable waitstaff. Best meatloaf I've ever had. It's pork, beef, and lamb and it just melts on your mouth with mashed potatoes, carmelized onions, and a puréed mushroom compote. Quite the generous portion. We also had this insane salad with arugula, goat cheese, blood orange slices, fresh strawberries, sugar snap peas, and added seared albacore. It's a new menu item and I hope they keep it around for a while. Awe also had a delicious roasted artichoke with various dipping sauces AND EDIBLE FLOWERS !!!! I sat outside with the only open table. The menu is very seafood friendly . All the based covered . Even wagayu burgers . I ordered the Seafood grill . Shrimp , scallops , and a mini corn on the cob . Other items on my plate , but I do not remember . My dinner was cooked perfectly . I'll most definitely return . We were really hungry when we went in here. Its a late afternoon and we haven't had any lunch yet since we explore the Oregon coast before heading to Portland. Love that they have an outdoor patio for you to sit on with a nice view of the oregon coast beach. Their food is awesome i can say. I love the steak with their butter miso as their sauce. First time trying it and it did not disappoint. Their calamari has some flavor to it which is kinda good. The clam chowder is really good as it is so creamy. We'll try somewhere else on our next visit, since there really isn't much that calls us back to Ona. The atmosphere is okay and the service was fine. Casual doesn't mean it's not exceptional. The food, service, and beverages were top notch. The delightful surprise, which I'm sure most folks wouldn't expect, was the 'Forager's Salad'. They harvest from the 5 Rivers Farm the freshest, brightest, and most savory greens I've ever had. This typifies the Ona's commitment and passion for sourcing the finest ingredients around Oregon's central coast. The wine list is another example of their careful attention to detail and sourcing wines from Oregon and other regions of the PNW. I am solo on a trip to take a break from family caregiving and was looking forward to a nice dinner with a view. When I arrived the hostess/waitress seemed immediately detached when I informed her I was alone. She then asked if I had a reservation which I found odd as the restaurant was about 60% empty. I asked if I needed one, gesturing to the multitude of empty tables. She offered to dine in the main eating area, the deck, or the lounge. I said the deck and she did her best to give me the paste on smile. I exclaimed how lovely the view was and she ignored me. She quickly returned with water and asked if I'd like to order a drink. When I replied I was fine with water her irritation was palpable but the elastic smile stayed strapped in place. I ordered oysters and the Wagyu burger. She brought the oysters and then left me for some time and my burger was brought out by a dour faced waitress from inside and unceremoniously plunked in front of me with no eye contact or query if I needed anything else (like ketchup). The burger was tasty, the fries were fine, they oysters delicate and interesting with the Yuzu granita. I watched the waitress tend to other guests and saw that she was informing them about specials and was generally more attentive. When I was over half way through with my meal and my water empty she suddenly returned to fill the water and ask if everything was good (way too late, my gal) . Then I was ignored again and sat for a bit until she returned and gave everyone on the deck attention and finally threw me a bone by looking my way. I asked for a box for my fries and the check. She returned quickly and I handed her my card and she said, "Oh, I can do that right here." Swiped my card on her iPad and handed it back STARING at me while I had to fill out the tip in front of her. As I handed it back she said with her waning elastic smile to enjoy the sunset! And have a good night! I essentially got 90% of her attention at this awkward moment where she intimidated me over a tip. This all might sound nit-picky but here's the deal. I WORKED IN SERVICE FOR OVER TWO DECADES!!! So I am INCREDIBLY generous about servers when they clearly are busting hump but slammed or have a crappy kitchen. I normally tip 25-50% for exceptional service. Sure, the view was awesome and the food decent but I take care of people full time at home and work. This was a special moment and if she had shown some authentic engagement and consistent check in instead of the bare minimum and dismissing me as a worthless ticket because I'm sober and alone, she would have gotten a fat tip and a 5 star review with her name. But she never introduced herself so, rave review or poopy pants review, this nameless woman bummed me out. I tipped her 19% (more than I wanted to) because she was literally staring at me. I guess I'm just old and recall what service used to be when I was serving/bartending. NEVER underestimate a customer. Treat them well and they might surprise you. read more

The food was excellent -- as an Italian, I can be quite particular about pasta, and the seafood pasta was truly outstanding. The mixed fish grill was equally delicious and beautifully prepared. Service was horrible. we got to the place 30 minutes before the dinner menu started. We didn't know that the menus changed and thought about leaving but the lady suggested getting an appetizer and waiting around so we did. After that we got greeted by another waitress and got an appetizer in. It was taking awhile and we wanted to get get a bottle of wine but we didn't get one because no one came up to us. After our appetizer was dropped there was still no one helping us. We decided to get the check but I had to go up to the waitress to ask to pay. While I went to pay the waitress said to me "yeah your better off cruising around" I don't know if it was because were young or what but it was just a horrible experience. Fish and chips were yummy! The tartar sauce was really good. I used the leftover on my fries. My Mom and my oldest daughter had the Wagyu burger and they loved it. My youngest daughter had the Cesar salad. She liked it. We got take out so I don't have an opinion on the service or ambiance. I hope we can eat in next time. read more

Food (3 of 5): we've eaten here for a number of years. The food ranges from excellent (scallops special in 2022) to somewhat mediocre and inconsistent. It is too much of a hit and a miss for me to give them a higher rating, but this is one of the better restaurants in the area and one I would definitely recommend giving a try if you need a place to eat. Unlike Luna Sea (very close spot), Ona is not driving out of your way for lunch or dinner. Luna Sea is a bit divvy on the atmosphere, but has some of the best halibut fish & chips (and other options) you're likely to have anywhere. My best meal at Ona was a special with pan fried scallops over risotto. It was outstanding. That was my first meal here years ago and I keep going back hoping for more of that level of magic. Unfortunately, so far that has not happened. Service (3): it's okay level service by mostly inexperienced youngsters working a summer job. In our experience, which is always in the July to August time frame, the service here tends to be by people not as familiar with the menu and food as we'd expect. There's an evident inconsistency that I think comes with the inexperienced and perhaps not quite trained staff. Atmosphere (3): the outside deck can be pleasant for dinner with a somewhat interesting view. Inside is unremarkable and a little bit dated. I suspect we'll continue to stop here for a lunch or a dinner when we're in town. If they have panned seared scallops and risotto on the menu give it a try! read more
