La Malbec is a gem, and an unexpected find in such a small town. The owner has created a space that will have you believing you are in NYC or some other metropolitan area. The food is nicely prepared and plated, and the cost for what you receive is extremely reasonable. The French Onion soup is second to none. Entrees from Tuscan Chicken to Lamb are something that will delight you. Service is generally strong, and the cocktails are outstanding, though sometimes there is a bit of a wait. I have been coming to La Malbec since it opened, and it has certainly made Bloomsburg a much more delightful culinary experience. read more

I was very excited to try out this restaurant because I had heard fantastic things! We hosted a holiday party this evening and had a large group. The restaurant had everything set up for us and the wait staff was great! Appetizers were ordered and the clams, and chicken wings came out cold. The chef came out and explained that the kitchen did not have the same type of heating as the restaurant and he was freezing back there. He said the heat lamps could not keep up with the cold temperatures, so he had no control over serving cold food. He said he would remove them from the bill for us. Seemed like a very odd explanation. I ordered seafood linguine but received seafood risotto. They offered to remake it quick but I declined since everyone else had their food. For the price of the plate I expected more than 2 scallops quartered and 5-6 shrimp. The taste was fine but I did not eat the risotto. The French onion soup was served with a puff pastry topper, lacked cheese, and had a brown sugar taste (very sweet). This is very different from any other French onion soup recipe that I have tried. I would not order it again as it did not meet my definition of French onion soup but you can be the judge of you try it. Mixed drinks were very good. I write this after ten days with no reply from the owner. I had hoped to resolve this privately, but that is not to be. I have enjoyed many meals at La Malbec, over the years, but sadly my most recent may be my last. The entire front end staff seems new and ill-informed. The charcuterie plate, despite a price hike, had fewer items. The patatas bravas were at best lukewarm. They also did not include the romesco sauce. When asked, the waitress said the kitchen sent it out, so it must not be included. After a second exchange, she did bring some out, it was cold, but that's OK, as the food was already too cold to enjoy. The lamb chops, when they finally arrived, were so salty I had to cut the salt with the risotto in order to make them palatable. Sadly, I can no longer recommend this establishmen. read more

I have to begin by saying the restaurant is very pretty. The atmosphere is cozy and quaint. We came specifically for Paella night, which is also our first visit. I had lobster and crab bisque to start and my wife had the burrata salad. Both were tasty and well proportioned. Then we split the Paella and asked the chef to substitute the chicken and pork with additional seafood, which he did. The flavors of the rice and seafood were very well done. Where all of this falls apart, is in the service. Our waitress, Ashley, needs some coaching. She was slow to take our orders. We had to ask for bread and we waited an extended period of time for my wife's drink. In addition to these small issues, the dirty dishes were not removed from the table until we piled them on the tables edge. The table was set for 4 and except for two glasses being removed, the napkins and setting were left for the entire meal. We ordered cheesecake for dessert with coffee. The cheesecake cake arrived quickly, but had to ask for the coffee. We heard two excuses for the wait for the drink and the coffee. First with the drink, we were told the bar is backed up. As a note the bar was empty. Second was, the coffee is brewing, while we waiting with the cheesecake on the table. We always believe that in addition to these sevice issues, if the food is good then we are happy. But five stars are earned by including good service. We will come back but I think some coaching of the service staff is in order. Better service and attentive bus boys, cleaning off the table will earn you five stars. read more

Unfortunately we had a very poor experience tonight. Poor service, an extended wait - in excess of 2 hours, and to top it all off, they brought the wrong meal to my mother-in-law. The communication was non existent on the long wait, until the chef finally stopped out and told us they were busy and they would give us a nice surprise at the end. The only surprise we got was when we got the bill and noticed a $75 tip already added in due to our party being over 6 people. Our waitress never returned after the meal mistake. BTW - my mother-in- law never got her meal until everyone had finished. The backup waitress had the nerve to suggest that restaurants of their quality generally take longer to provide the meal. Very pretty and fun atmosphere, personable crew with American local cuisine. Quite an elaborate and fun Sunday Brunch menu for this way up the river in Central PA! The mimosa flights are definitely unique, though I was quite satisfied with my French 75. The menu is selective to change, but right now, I've tried the borscht along with the burrata. Borscht is served a few different ways, here it's more of a purée which I prefer anyway. The burrata was served atop of fresh arugula and tomatoes with a very nice balsamic vinegar selection. I hope this one sticks around closer to summer. The dish boasts local flare and I'd love to try this again when tomatoes are in season. Very nicely appointed and fun for Sunday Brunch, feels like an elevated escape with a down to earth soundtrack that's relaxing. read more

Just opened for a few months, and I can see this place becoming a new hot spot. This restaurant is a great addition to the food scene for both Bloomsburg and NEPA. Every dish was delicious with great textures, flavors, and ingredients. Highlights: The Pork Chop and Deep Fried Bread Pudding. 2 dishes you must try. The only complaint was the air conditioning blowing directly on us. We were SOOOOO cold. Tip: if you don't like being cold or don't want AC blowing on you, ask to be seated under the air vents closest to the bar in the dining room area. You can also sit on the bar side too. Given that they are still new to the dining scene, there are some kinks to fix and hopefully this is one of them. Their wine list wasn't a huge offering, and I hope to see more additions to the wine by the glass and bottles. I look forward to returning again soon. Very impressed with the food and still thinking about that Pork Chop and Deep Fried Bread Pudding. Tips: Reservations are made by phone only. Parking is street parking. No BYOB or Corkage Fee offered. Dress is smart casual but business casual is also appropriate too. read more

This is our new favorite place in town! Already been there twice for dinner. I love the interior decor, there's a bar area and a dinning area. We sat in the dinning area both times. My wife and I went on a Friday night the first time. They had live jazz music and a paella special. We started with empanadas and ginger soup, both were good. We then shared a paella which was delicious. The highlight of the night was the blueberry mascarpone cake. Definitely a must try! The second time we went with friends on a Saturday (no pics). We sat in the table with a couch by the window, which makes a semiprivate setting. My wife went for the soup again. I did the scallops. For entrees we had the seafood linguine and pork chops. Our friends had the French onion soup, roasted beet salad, ceviche and seafood risotto. We shared the bread pudding for dessert. Everyone loved their food! Blueberry mojito was great! Chef Andres stopped by every table to say hi! Very nice touch. We also met owner Roxana. It was great to see fellow Ecuadorians! La Malbec is a great addition to the food scene in the area. I would give La Malbec more stars if I could. The attentiveness and help the staff and chef provided were exquisite. From the host who seated us (didn't get her name), to Parker our waiter, to Chef Andres, to owner Roxana, each stopped by to speak with us very personably and to ensure we had an outstanding visit. We were visiting from Wisconsin and only learned about La Malbec from an entry in the guest book at the VRBO we were staying at. My wife has some dietary restrictions and these concerns were taken very seriously. Cocktails, small plates, main course, and dessert were all checked, and tailored if needed, to ensure we could enjoy them. We started with a Salt of the Earth Old Fashioned for my wife and a Smoked Maple Manhattan served in a smoke chamber for me. Both were outstanding.... kudos to the bartender on duty (I don't think it was Chad). We continued with the Charcuterie for 2. A good choice to prepare for the fish dishes we were eyeing. My wife's seared Salmon was excellent, and uniquely served with skin on and on the top-side, salty and crispy. The Salmon was on a bed of ratatouille that chef modified slightly for my wife's restrictions. My Seafood on a bed of risotto (the host's recommendation) was mind-blowing. Scallops, shrimp, and lobster seared and seasoned beautifully on a risotto that packed a powerful flavor punch. Dessert is one of my wife's favorites. As chef came to check on us he acknowledged that all the desserts had sugars that my wife couldn't have. He and my wife collaborated to devise a fresh fruit and ricotta cheese dessert that chef executed beautifully. Thank you all at La Malbec. read more

Do yourself a favor, don't go here. Been here twice and I have had two of my worst restaurant experiences... ever. First of all, I know the owners. Nice people. So i wanted to give this place a try. I went twice for brunch. Both times, my food was served cold. First time I went, my waiter was obviously distracted by something else and never came to check on our table. Not once. Couldn't even tell him our food was cold. Second time, I had a different waiter. Tall boy, super nice at first. Seemed very disorganized though and definitely did not care to listen to my table's requests. Everyone ordered mimosa's but me, so he comes back with a tray full of 5+ mimosas. He seemed very unsteady, and sure enough dumped the entire mimosa tray on top of me, down my back, in my hair, etc. He didn't apologize... just stood there and said "oh shit". I had to BEG for new napkins and chair and so forth. Instead of making sure everything was okay with me, he IGNORED ME and AVOIDED me the rest of my time there. To top it off, multiple waitresses saw, and the manager, yet no one helped me or said something to him about what he did. THEN: I was charged full price for the meal, no one tried to make it right. Like I said, I never even ordered a mimosa, yet he then charged me for TWO OF THEM. I asked him to correct it, he did, I gave my card to pay, and when i checked AGAIN... he charged me anyways. I went back up to him to have it changed and he said it would be refunded to my account... never happened. Didn't have the energy to go back and complain. So... not only did this horrible experience happen to me, but I was also overcharged for my meal. Fuck this place. Overall... poor service, actually it SUCKS. no one gives a shit if you have an awful time, food is mediocre for the price. I would give this place zero stars if i could. Fuck this place. read more

Let me first say that we were thrilled when Bloomsburg got a high end restaurant. We patronized this restaurant during the first few months of opening, and loved everything we had. From the start, the service was slow, but the food and atmosphere were so good, it did not matter. On our most recent visit, January 2023, we can no longer say the food has kept the high quality it once had, and the service has gotten worse. We had a reservation, and we're seated promptly. We then waited 25 minutes before getting up to go ask if we were going to get water and a drink order taken. Our drink order and food order were taken right away after that, but we waited another 15 minutes to get only one of our two drinks. The second drink which was a glass of wine was brought a few minutes later, with the explanation that they were sorry about the height of the wine, but they had to open another bottle, implying they would be back with more? We don't understand why they didn't open the bottle and fill the glass higher prior to bringing it in the first place. We were then told by our server that our appetizer salads were going to be made with spring mix instead of arugula salad, because they ran out of arugula. Although the taste is entirely different, we said that would be okay. This spring mix salad was wilty and not fresh. To be fair, the salads were removed from our bill. My husband ordered the halibut, and he said it did not taste like halibut, and was smelly and not fresh. My pork chops were overcooked, but I must say they were flavored very well. We ordered crème brûlée for dessert, however, we were told after a few minutes that they were out of that. Since we both have to eat, gluten-free, no other dessert was an option. We then waited again, quite a bit, for our bill. This restaurant has very good potential to be excellent, it just seems like no one is supervising the operation or ensuring the service and food are of high-quality. In the end, we paid $132 to be very frustrated. read more

We came to La Malbec to celebrate my 30th birthday and we had a fantastic time! We had the pleasure of being seated with Toni and she went above and beyond to make our meal enjoyable and memorable. She gave us some suggestions for other local places we may enjoy and suggested coming back for La Malbec brunch. Our dinner was absolutely amazing, the drinks were great and the atmosphere was great! The owner even came to say hello and make sure we were enjoying everything. The experience was so good in fact we returned for brunch that same weekend and once again a fantastic meal! We had an excellent meal here on all accounts - food, service, and location were all great. They had a great wine selection and everything on the menu looked delicious. The steak and lamb chops were phenomenal, probably some of the best I have had. The appetizer of potato wedges was just large French fries but somehow cost $18. The prices don't make sense and food isn't good enough to cost this much.
