Food was alright. The burger was nothing special but cooked well. Portions of everything were great. Took a while to get drinks but food came out quickly. Nice open space, we got to sit near one of the front windows and enjoy the breeze and people walking by. Overall not a bad experience but the food wasn't amazing
Feeling peckish, I ducked into this quiet spot for lunch after my walking tour of Old San Juan. I decided to give it a try despite the 3.4 rating and was pleasantly surprised. The servers were friendly and spoke English even though I wanted to practice my Spanish. As far as the food I was pleased with my order of Pastelon. It's kind of like a Puerto Rican version of shepherds pie. Instead of mashed potatoes, you get smashed plantains and a mixture of ground beef with olives in it topped with cheese it was very hearty and tasty.
I think this place is under rated on yelp. We walked in here for a drink and refreshment, got their Pina colada, and local beer, also a fried Calamari. All come fast, and delicious. The Calamari come with clean big rings with real octopus, not some shitty small things. I can't taste the alcohol in my pina colada but it's perfect for me, a lot of coconut taste. Love this place!
The space is beautiful. We got there close to closing and they graciously let us sit at the bar. We got some mojitos and piña coladas. They were delicious! We decided to get the platter. It's typical Puerto Rican frituras. I will say, they're pretty generic tasting compared to the price they're selling it for. But for anyone wanting to have a taste of the best of our food, it's a great option to share.
We visited here as part of a walking tour and definitely weren't impressed. We had the mofongo which we mashed ourselves. It was included as part of our tour so don't know how much it would have cost had we ordered it off the menu, but it was only lukewarm and - meh.... The biggest letdown was we ordered 8 mojitos. The bartender said he was busy (didn't look busy) and they couldn't make a mojito, but would bring us an equally fun drink. The 9 drinks were brought (some type of punch like) drink that was about half of a glassful for us and apparently 1 drink for someone not in our group. A few moments later we were brought another drink none of us ordered. I will say our group just drank them - so definitely on us. We were then hit with a $155.00 bill for the two rounds that we really didn't get what we had even asked for. We drank them, we paid for what we were given. The price just seemed steep for what we received. Apparently La Mallorquina believes they can charge exorbitantly in their market.

We weren't really impressed here. Service was mediocre at best. Food was meh. The empanadas were probably the only thing that actually tasted good. The chicken fingers were waaaaaaaaay overcooked, like hard and inedible. We got the Smash Boricua Burger. It was smashed. And as far as we could tell, was not "stuffed" with plantains. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but nothing was seasoned. Everything could have used some salt.
Ok. Soo obligatory Marg check: this is hands down the best marg in San Juan. Our waitress Aaliyah made her own recipe and it's spicy and fruity...kinda like I dream she is. If she bends that way I'm totally down for a night or two if it means more of these margs. The food is great. Im a sucker for a good water feature and this calm fountain is soo pretty. Come here.

The gandules escabeche was very good and we also had the gambas Al ajillo as well as the tostones. The gambas were small for gambas more like regular camarao, delicious none the less. The tostones were cooked perfectly, they were plain though and I believe would be better with a dipping sauce of some sort. We resorted to dipping in the gambas sauce and the escabeche sauce. The place is very loud with hybrid live and dj music. The fans were spinning helping move the air around for such a humid evening. Would definitely come back to try some entrees!

One of my favorite stops in San Juan so far. The food is so fresh, the staff is so nice and answer any questions you may have. Open dining room and great music as well as some historical art and mirrors on the wall. Whenever I am back in San Juan I will most definitely come back. The waitress we had recommended her favorite dish to me and it was so good!! So much food I only ate half and I'm still full and content! 10/10 recommend! read more

It is a very lively restaurant. The food taste good the employees are extremely nice. My sister and I end up having some empanadas, tostones and wings. They were very busy so it took them a while to serve us, we got complimentary shots for waiting so long. Definitely recommend the empanadas best one I have tasted so far. Their menu tostones were okay. Needed more seasonings in my opinion. Wings were falling off the bone. It's a 100% yes for me. read more

We ate here a few days ago and we loved it. We had their pina colada and their green plantains with garlic, amazing. They also have a make your own mofongo experience which seemed a lot of fun. The service excellent and the ambiance was an island feel. read more

Food is mediocre at best. Burger was just meh. Fries weren't seasoned or salted. Lemon drop was given with ice in the drink, tasted awful. Only reason food got ate and drinks were done is because we were hungry and thirsty. If you want authentic PR food, this isn't it. read more

"Arroz mejor de mi vida - The best rice I've ever had". Seriously. I asked the host while being seated what he thought the best food they served was and although he initially demurred and said "everything", he eventually shared that he thought the churrasco and the arroz con ~whatever your protein of choice is~ were the best. It was lunchtime so we opted to share Arroz con Pollo and Pan Tomaca. The Arroz con Pollo ~Chicken with Rice~ $23 was muy delicioso. It really is probably the best rice I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. The chicken was very good but I'm not a dark meat chicken fan so I let my husband eat it all :). The Pan Tomaca was perfect bread grilled and topped with grated tomato and fresh herbs. It was so light and fresh, the perfect bite on a hot day. Our server, who was absolutely delightful, lit up with surprise and pleasure when he realized we spoke Spanish. I don't think speaking Spanish was the reason behind it but he brought us a lagniappe ~a gift from the bar~ of anise with a little cream and grated cocoa along with our Pina Coladas. The restaurants claim to fame is that it's been around since 1848. It's a beautiful place and we were seated in a pleasant table for two directly in front of the open air windows. We'd been headed down the street towards another restaurant (the kind that everything is $8.95 or $11.95) and we passed it after we ate. The charm of this restaurant was part of our good experience and we were glad they'd stopped us and invited us in. My four rather than 5 honestly came down to price. I'd really wanted something like the fresh catch of the day but $45 seemed a lot for that. That being said, they charged us well below the stated menu prices that we were expecting, so we tipped very well. Service was perfecto. Check them out. read more

I actually came across this place by accident on Saturday May 28th when I was trying to get to the San Juan castle. It was a very hot and humid out that Saturday. What caught my eyes was the beautiful colorful canvas. It wasn't many people inside, I sat at the bar where an attractive man named Mike was my bartender. He fixed me a delicious peach drink that he created. Mike, the Bartender was told me how the bar is historic. Originally opened in 1848, La Mallorquina in Old San Juan was the oldest operating restaurant in the Americas until its doors closed in January 2012. Now Old San Juan welcomes back La Mallorquina after painstaking renovations by current owner María Socorro Figueroa Lugo. The restaurant's original owners, Antonio Vidal Llinás and others, came from Palma de Mallorca, Spain that's why they named their restaurant La Mallorquina, which loosely translated into English means The Woman from Mallorca. Puerto Rico's first elected governor, Luis Muñoz Marín , was also one of the famous people to visit the restaurant. While, I was there for a short time I enjoyed the history lesson from Mike the bartender, and the mirrors in the bar are the original ones. Highly recommend bar when in Old San Juan. read more

oh man i hate giving one star reviews but i don't think i could rate any higher - the only thing i liked was the waiter who was super cool. it was busy because we went on christmas but the wait for our food was a little crazy for its simplicity. btw they also charged us $3 for waters which were dasani bottles. we waited 50 minutes for the funky chicken and veggie paella. the funky chicken was so dry and super simple literally two pieces of chicken and greens tossed together. the paella was yummy but was basically just rice and veggies so it wasn't worth the wait. prices were around $25. i know it was christmas so i have a little empathy but the meal was def not worth the time or price read more

Food was so delicious, ambiance was amazing and service was great! Everything from food to drinks was so good we had to go back two nights in a row! There was also a live band playing while we enjoyed our dinner. We'll definitely be back when we're back in town! read more

Came here with three girlfriends while walking around old San Juan. Walked in about 9 AM for breakfast-- we did not have a reservation. It was starting to get busy and by the time we left it was packed. Ordered mimosas and different vegetarian options, which were plenty. The ambience and scene is very lovely with lots of light streaming in from the open courtyard and water fountain. Service was slightly slow especially when other people started to trickle in and food did take a while but we didn't have our children and took our time with mimosas and coffee , so we were content. Food was pretty good although could've been spiced and salted a little bit better. read more

Wow, what a find.. La Mallorquina is a Spanish inspired Puerto Rico restaurant. Apparently the oldest restaurant in San Juan, owned by the same family who originated from Mallorca, Spain. It definitely gave me Cuban feels, very similar to restaurants I've frequented in Havana. It's open and airy, having and indoor outdoor vibe. It's casual here and the dishes are amazing. The service outstanding. The whole experience was tremendous. We tried our first ever Mofongo which is a Puerto Rico classic dish, plantain based with chicharonnes and garlic. It was astonishingly good. We also had a Spanish inspired Avocado and tomato salad.. oh my.. and of course the special of the night.. Seafood Paella.. great choice. They have an extensive collection of American and Spanish wines. We spent quite a while here, relaxing and taking it all in. Great location in the Old Town and great choice. Don't miss. read more

The ambiance is not as good as it could be..road construction right outside...booo. The drinks are delicious (I went with the margarita, my friends all went with pina coladas). We started with the manchego..great. Then we moved to calamari (4 out 5 said it was the best calamari they ever had). Then we had two types of mufungo, the special (shrimp and rice and tostones and beef), and carne pollo arroz. We also had an order of tostones by themselves and also the chorizo and local cheese (fried). I can't believe we have this much food sitting her...and I can't believe how wonderful it all is. Our waiter Julian is wonderful. I don't think I can say enough wonderful things about this place..brave the road construction-its worth it! read more
