The food is the same delicious favors they were years ago. Always treated well and greeted by the owner who has been there since he was a young man. He took over for his Dad who still remember from when I was a kid. The old time appearance has been refreshed some but it's still a homie atmosphere. Food was ok, nothing extraordinary but not certainly not bad. Ate with a big group and the general consensus was that while no one had bad food, only a few folks who really liked Italian expressed interest in a return visit. Service was very efficient and the servers were very nice but place was scorching, like literally everyone was sweating into their food. No clue why the air was off with just the windows open when it was in the high 80s outside. We got no breeze in the back corner of the restaurant and it was almost unbearable until, oddly enough, the AC came on as we were 2/3 of the way through eating. Highlights were the delicious sautéed broccoli rabe, the expertly fried calamari, the tasty mixed salad and the chicken scarparo (though it wasn't very spicy). The very first place I went when I moved to White plains. Tired from unpacking went to get something to eat and found this place 5mins away. Instant favorite since then. Come here often mostly to grab pizza and Italian take out for the kids. This place can easily become your go to when you crave for authentic old school mom pops Italian meal. Atmosphere is very friendly. Most customers you find here are regulars.. They treat you like you're family and you will probably see the owner saying hi to the tables. I warn you the menu is not very diet friendly. Everything is heavy and saucy as authentic Italian often is. The portions are big too. Plenty of parking in the back. Bring cash. As its a cash only. The in-laws treated us to this local cash-only gem offering amazing Italian cuisine. The owner Sly (?) seated our party of 6 pretty quickly after checking that we were all there. Historic decor doesn't take away from our purpose: the awesome pizza! We conferred with our waitress on the quantity needed for salad (3), the mussels, other apps, and pizza. Always love the food and the atmosphere at La Manda's. We always feel welcomed when we go there and the food never disappoints! We had the house salad with gorgonzola which is outstanding. I had the creamy pesto and it's my new favorite dish there. My partner had the pork chops in vinegar and he had to bring one home it was such a big portion. My family and I have been coming here for years. My parents know the owners going way back. We are familiar with quite a few of the waitstaff as well. We know this place from the signature crack in the kitchen window to the charming old-school placemats. We remember when the walls were covered in old-fashioned posters. Now, old photographs hang on the walls, and the back wall is covered in a large, colorful mural. The best dishes to get here are the pizza bread, the fried calamari, the chicken scarparo, and the filet of sole francese. The fries are not bad as a side dish. I would also recommend the linguine with oil as a side. For those wondering, the pizza bread is basically garlic bread in a flat pizza-like shape, and it's one of the best things they make here. read more

I've passed La Manda's a few times driving up and down Tarrytown Road; it's bright neon sign stood out amongst the sea of retail establishments in this area of White Plains (also, I'm a sucker for neon signs). Anyway, I was looking to order some pizza for dinner, and since most pizza spots in WP I've tried are just okay, I decided to give La Manda's a try. I gave them a call and shortly after went to go pick up my order. Echoing the other reviews here, the look of La Manda's is old school. Inside, it's really dated - kind of a dark aesthetic with deep brown wood tones and greens throughout. I've been to other old school restaurants like this before, but at least those exhibit some sort of warmth and charm - La Manda's does neither. That's something I'll keep in mind if I ever decide to sit and eat here - this time though, I was just here for a pickup. We got a large pizza with peppers and onion, and also a cheese calzone. The pizza was pretty tasty - I was kind of expecting more topping, but the crust was good and it had good flavor overall. The calzone was huge - the menu says it serves four and it definitely can. What I liked about the calzone was that it had just enough filling and they accented the cheese with green onion which added a welcome layer of flavor. So, while I don't find La Manda's aesthetics to be welcome, I do find their food to be some of the better Italian I've had in Westchester. Also, whoever took my order on the phone was super charismatic. I think he also rung me out when I got to the restaurant - he was awesome so kudos to him for awesome customer service. Oh Lordy, here we go again... This place still sucks. La Manda is where food goes to die. The food is the worst part of this crumbling edifice of whatever this place is. Years have gone by since the last time I had food from here. I was hoping maybe, just maybe, things got a little better, but alas! My order had canned mushrooms in it. Restaurants should NEVER cook with canned anything ~ wtf is this?!?! Guys, you really need an overhaul; not just of your cooking but possibly your understanding of what (good) food is. When people eat at/from a restaurant, its understood that we are expecting professionals to create something with their professional skill. But, when you cook with canned sh!t, its akin to your ophthalmologist giving you funny glasses from a cereal box to take home - you know, the ones with a mustache and googly eyes?! My wife's order had undercooked (pink) chicken in it and you could still taste the alcohol from the wine. And the pasta sauce was too acidic - we could have used it to unclog our kitchen sink (beware - PVC pipes may corrode) I don't get it - is this your brand of lazy callousness towards your work and clientele, or are you simply unaware of the world around you? I have two suggestions for you - 1. Go eat at other (Italian) restaurants in town. Maybe you'll be inspired. 2. Conversely, bulldoze your umm.. 'restaurant' and build a dog-park there. Best Italian food in the region! Deceptively non-descript outward appearance and decades-old (deliberately) decor. Great pizza and pasta dishes. But their outstanding dishes are their veal scallopini Marsala, veal piccata and chicken scarpiella (scarpiara?). Mouth watering!! Favorite place since I was a kid! Warnings: can be loud since it's small and a bit crowded - not great for a quiet intimate dinner on a sat night - expect waiting time on weekend nights. Same family ownership for 75+ years! He thinks he is a wise guy with dirty clothes and shoes I wouldn't put on my dog.We continued and ordered some wine and appetizers. Wine came, was absolutely terrible (more like vinegar)recommended by the owner. Waiter delivered appetizers spilled clams oregano sauce, all over me. Owner never addressed this problem or Apologized. Next food came and everyone was disappointed. There was six of us needless to say will never return. This place only takes cash, and I can clearly see why. The OWNER is a nutcase! You can walk in and (depending on the hour) it may be empty...and I mean empty.... then you ask for a specific seat like a booth and it's a HUGE deal. He looks around like he has to think about where to put you. And, it's where HE wants you to sit. If you say you don't want to sit in the seat he chooses, it's too bad for you. He'll say 'no'... period! (FYI: some corner booths are cut very small and are wedged in the corner) Think I'm lying? Go in and ask one of the wait staff if you can sit in a specific seat when you are at the podium. They HAVE TO go get the owner and ask him and he comes to put you where he wants you even if every table is free. It's really INSANE!! The guy can be a snotty jerk. When his dad ran the place many years ago, they had a great staff of women. Little by little, they quit. They used to whisper to us that the owners son (SLY) was awful but they got good tips so they stayed. I guess the tips couldn't even hold them there. This is the definition of a place that has rested on its laurels for far too long (make that "died a long time ago on its laurels"). The dirty, rundown atmosphere is not at all charming, and is clearly just the result of the owner not giving a damn to put money into the place. Sly, the owner, is the rudest proprietor you'll ever come across. There were times when we'd avoid this place just to not have to deal with his nastiness. But rest assured it's the food that will keep you away. Most dishes are bland, over/undercooked, and made with the cheapest possible ingredients (more than once we were confronted with canned mushrooms - pathetic). The last straw was when we ordered eggplant parm - soggy grey flesh resembling an old rug left out in the rain. Hardly and sauce and the cheese was undercooked. Completely inedible, sent it back and of course. If you're looking for a similar type of place (except with good food and friendly staff), head over to Francesco's in white plains. White visiting NY my girlfriend who was born and raised in Yonkers said we must go to La Manda's for a delicious Italian dinner. I have to say I was disappointed. We started off sharing the mixed salad which was absolutely delicious. I ordered the meat lasagna and that's where I was very disappointed. They used far too much wine in it and didn't let it cook off so the flavors didn't exist just a taste of strong wine. My girlfriend got a pasta dish (can't remember the name) but she said it was delicious and just how she remembered. I'd give this restaurant another shot but next time not order the meat lasagna. read more

Grab a seat at the bar, order a pie, and let them take care of the rest - I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Exterior of La Manda's, pulls you in with their neon electric sign. La Manda's is NOT quaint or cute. But wait, interior screams outdated, the second you walk in with old wood panels everywhere. Forget the latest trends- it's non- existent here. This is not romantic by any means: no fresh flowers as you come in- just straight old fashioned in a 70's sort of way. So why all the negative jabbering? Well, La Manda's has friendly servers and what La Manda's lacks in decor, they make up for it somewhat with their food. I heard some good things about La Manda over the years and finally got the chance to have dinner there a few days ago. As many other reviewers have noted, the place is very bare bones but if you look past decor you'll see that most of the ambiance comes from the friendly and vibrant staff who suddenly feel like close family. This is not the place to come if you want to eat in anonymity or silence; numerous staffers can and will come over to chat with you. I loved the vibe but I can see how it may not be everyone's cup of tea. As for the food I wasn't in the mood for a pasta or pizza so I went with 3 small dishes, the meatball app, the chicken and escarole soup, and the sauteed broccoli rabe. The food came out pretty quick. I have to say, the waitresses were really sensational the entire night. Aside from being quick they were genuinely on top of everything, handling requests for extra napkins and more water without a problem and stopping by a few times to make sure we were enjoying our meal. As for the food, my soup was pleasant enough but after a few spoons it got to be too sour for my taste. Most chicken and escarole soups I've had in the past didn't have vinegar, so I was not expecting it. Not a bad soup mind you, just not for me. I loved the meatball app, just your classic Italian meatball in simple marinara sauce, well executed and delicious. They were a big hit with everyone at the table. We should have got more than 2 actually! And finally the broccoli rabe was outstanding, cooked perfectly in a bit of olive oil and broth with huge pieces of garlic mixed it. I gave it a few tries. The last one I ordered chicken franchise it was basically two boiled sliced chicken breast with lemon sauce poured over it. Awful. Another time I ordered the eggplant Parm and it was so dry. I couldn't eat it. I had to ask for sauce so now you can probably get a better meal at McDonald's. Had an excellent lunch there. Began with hot antipasto which consisted of baked clams, stuffed mushrooms eggplant rolatini roasted peppers etc. All were fresh and delicious. Ordered zuppa de pesce and chicken scarpara as entrees. The chicken was excellent! Very garlicky with some heat from a cherry pepper. They ask you how hot you like it. It was perfectly medium as I had asked. My friend had the seafood entree which was a mound of clams calamari shrimp mussels and some type of fish. It was delicious, and huge! I couldn't stop myself from eating the soft calamari. So tasty and perfectly cooked. This is a quality meal, very casual restaurant but great food!!! I'll be going back soon! read more

The owner is one of the rudest people I have ever met. He practically yelled at me twice just because I asked for a to go container. On another visit I complained about my meal and he said there was nothing he could do about it and refused to rectify it. Years ago we loved to go to Lamanda's. Gerry , the owner, was a warm friendly owner and host. Unfortunately his son does not have his personality . We went today for old times sake .We've avoided eating here for years because of his son's disposition but tonite we saw his nasty side again . The Place was practically empty at 5:45. He refused to give us one if the 9 empty booths. He said they were for parties of four. We turned to leave and he finally said "ok you can have this one in the back. " We took it . Food isn't what it was. If you read all the reviews , you'll see I'm not alone in this comment - both about Sly , the rude owner and about the food .
