Love, love LOVE this place, but the best and only time I will eat here is when they open at 4pm, even though they now serve lunch. I don't do lunch. Arrived at 4:02 pm and was given the drill about having reservations and asked to sit at the bar, blah, blah, blah, then, a slight pause, OR you can sit at this 2 top in the window....duh???? The place was practically empty, why, because, let's face it, who eats dinner at 4pm? I have no problem with this because I've been here when it's so crowded you can't even hear one another. If you don't like sitting close to people and hearing their life's drama, or like screaming while trying to eat, this is NOT the place for you OR consider all of this and go when they open for lunch or dinner. My friend and I have eaten here several times. Tapas are our favorite and this place is very popular. They have the best Paella, out there. This time we just wanted to nosh a bit and we both ordered a few tapas to share. Most items were fantastic! We ordered Patatas Cargadas, potatoes, brava sauce, crema and braised oxtail. Very nice, even though both of us thought it was beef, I even thought it was lamb. It was so good. The Piquillos, goat cheese stuffed piquillo peppers looked perfect all lined up! I'm not a goat cheese fan, so I passed. The Croquetas De Cangre Jo, Dungeness crab and bone marrow was superb; it's all about texture. The hit for both was Vieras, the best day boat scallops I've ever had, ever, ever, ever!!! The were perfectly cooked large scallops (3) arranged beautifully on top of a scrumptious tapenade, made these great chorizo crisps, need I forget the sherry miso butter....oh, I was beside myself with every bite. I had to contain myself, but really, I didn't want to share and could have eaten several more. Again, all about texture, especially perfect textured, not overcooked scallops. The disappointment was Bruselas, Brussels sprouts, grapes, with a balsamic-pedro ximenez reduction....while the sprouts were tasty, the sprouts we way too undercooked. Look, I love al dente veggies, but we couldn't even cut them with a knife and fork...we ended up just pulling the outer leaves after attempting to cut them many times. I brought them home and baked them a few more minutes. There's a thin line between al dente sprouts and a few minutes or even second and you'll have a complete mushy mess. These were far from overcooked and probably needed only seconds to be perfect. The service was uncomfortable at this visit, with three to four staff members hovering over us like vultures. At one point, someone tried to remove a plate that was hardly touched, asking if we were finished. I know all about turning tables, but the place had maybe 4 tables occupied. At one point it was almost overbearing that so many employees kept approaching us or stood a few feet away and peered at us and our plates. Thirty seconds after the bill was given to us, one employee walked about three feet away and kept looking to see a credit card. I never need this much attention in life, certainly not in a restaurant!! It was annoying as fuck...hard to chew kind of annoying. It almost felt like they thought we might be dining and dashing....not a good feeling for the digestive system! I think we may have been there an hour and that's stretching it. Still, when we paid and left, the place was still not filled anywhere near capacity. It was, indeed, quite an odd experience. Is the food worth it...absolutely. But this was this first time I've EVER felt this uncomfortable while eating at ANY eating establishment and certainly will take this episode into consideration when or IF I plan a future visit. read more

We sat in the back patio, and it was nice and enclosed. There were a bit of bugs and flies, but probably not much the restaurant could do. Staff was busy but still prompt to take care of us and check on us. My Sangria had a bug fall in it and they replaced it no problem. Will have to go back to try the churros con chocolate! read more

The restaurant is quite small and quaint, the service was OK (kinda slow), the paella & dessert was tasty but not amazing, but the tapas were awesome. Both the red and white sangria were tasty. The creme brulee dessert was only OK and the paella mixta we got (shrimp. chorizo, and chicken) was good, but nothing too special. The shrimp were big and flavorful though a little dry, the chicken chunks were big and great, but there was only a tiny amount of little bits of chorizo that you barely noticed. The tapas, however, were all amazing. The patatas bravas was a huge portion of potatoes in a very flavorful and quite spicy brava sauce. The fried calamari was a huge portion of lightly breaded big chunks of calamari. I love La Marcha. I've been coming here for years, since they opened. Now they're very popular and, of course, more expensive, but the food is well worth the cost. Takeout is just as good as eat in. My favorites are the paella marinera, the paella arroz negro (I love the squid ink!), the brussels sprouts, and the calamari. Don't be fooled by the small glass the cocktails come in. They pack a nice punch! The variety of wines is a pleasure. I always like trying out the tapas - best to come during happy hour. The service is very accommodating. The decor is very nice, but I come for the food - fresh, delicious, and nice portions. I highly recommend La Marcha. Sorry I didn't take photos. Next time! read more

The service was extremely rude from a male server with short-cut beard and black rimmed glasses. When we entered the restaurant, we told him we needed a table for 4 people. He responded by repeating "how are you?" 3 times without responding to our table request. He was angry that we didn't engage in this meaningless "okay I''m fine, and you?" chit chat. He was trying to teach us manners. Look, we came here to eat food, not make friends with you. After getting to our table, we asked for a high chair for our baby. When he brought the chair over, he said snarlingly "you're welcome" well before we could get a chance to say thank you. He was trying to teach another lesson in manners. I thought this was a restaurant, not a kindergarten. Just do your job as a server, and serve us. We don't need any snark. Since our son was extremely hungry we asked the server to bring the bread while we decided on the tapas. 4 tiny slices of bread came out. We didn't find out that they charged us $4 for this bread until the bull came at the end of the meal. Virtually every other restaurant in America gives bread and butter at the beginning of the meal for free, yet this restaurant tips us off like this. When we were ready to order our tapas, the male server was nowhere to be found. So we asked a female server if she could take our order instead. She said she would go and ask the male server to come take our order. I saw the male server whisper something to the female server. Only the female server came back and said, "never mind, I'll be taking your order from now on". What I can only infer is that the male server had told the female server that he was tired of running a kindergarten and wanted her to do the normal restaurant duties. The food was okay tasting. Teleferic Barcelona in Palo Alto tastes better in my opinion. La Marcha is just extremely overpriced. For 4 adults to be just satisfied it turned out to be $170 after tax and tip. I didn't appreciate how our 2nd waiter brought that handheld credit card reader and towered over me with an eagle eye as I inputted the tip. This is a cheap psychological battle to get everyone to tip more. Their lowest tip setting was 18%. You had to tap a few more buttons to input a more sensible number in this day and age of high inflation and recession. read more

Grapes?? In brussel sprouts. Yes you are seeing that correctly and yes you should absolutely order these if you go! I came in on a Tuesday around 5:45pm and was seated at the bar with no reservation. My friend and I started with a white white sangria (amazing), and the patatas bravas (perfect potato to sauce ratio) and the croquetas pollo (they were out of the crab ones but we weren't too upset). Then we got the brussel sprouts (delicious and the grapes were oddly firm??) and octopus (highly recommend if you enjoy garbanzo beans). We finished the meal with the cheesecake, but will definitely be back for the chocolate cake per our very friendly waiter's recommendation. TLDR: Come for happy hour if you can!! There was the former nearby cheese shop, or the defunct art store, or the former Albatross bar that I would occasionally visit, but past that it was an area to travel through while going from A to B. So I was somewhat impressed to see a apparently long in business Spanish restaurant scene, including an waiting crowd outside when we arrived. We were fortunate to have our reservation (via Open Table) set a couple weeks ago. Gayle and I shared a really fun and rollicking meal with 3 members of the related Gaston clan (Ben, Jake, and Fatima). The 5 us up were upfront (by the window), which gave us a couple restaurant perspectives. This place had great energy and after maybe 2+ hours here (plus 3 bottles of wine, paella, and countless tapas choices), we left happy full, and impressed with our most delicious Spanish cuisine choices. We also had a great time catching up (including our briefing of a recent South Africa trip), talking about our Camino Ingles walk coming up in May, and debating various issues of the day. Not only was she rude to us, she spoke down to the rest of us the staff that were trying to accommodate us. We had called that we would be 10min late for our reservation, which was after 10pm (for happy hour) and she made us wait 30minutes till we could be seated, even though servers were saying they could seat us or we could go to the bar, she said we should wait outside. I haven't been back here since the first time i tried it (2017), and I don't know why I always wait so long to eat here. I came with my family for my God Mothers birthday, with 10 people. And we got to try a little bit of everything. For the appetizers we got Calamari, Patatas Bravas, Piquillos Rellenos (Stuffed Pepper), and the Brussel Sprouts. My favorite were definitely were the Patatas Bravas, I think the spicy aioli on top, made a huge difference to meal, and I kept wanting more. Also, I was really surprised by the taste of the peppers, they were really good, and the goat cheese kinda oozed out of the pepper. It was so good! We got the Paella Mixta and Marinera. I have to say that my favorite one thus far is the Paella Marinera, it's so classic, but also the flavors of the seafood really makes a huge difference in the Pealla, it's extremely rich and flavorful, and didn't feel so heavy. I also enjoyed the Paella Mixta, but the chorizo for me felt too heavy. So I kept picking it out. The restaurant is kinda small, so I recommend making a reservation. I often see people lining up outside waiting to get in. I definitely think that they should expand and take the place next door because they are always busy!. read more

We walked, and lo and behold, $20 cancellation charge. UNBELIEVABLE. Too many good choices in Berkeley. This one will shut down for sure. EDIT: See owner's response below. (1) They failed to communicate full table must arrive policy in the 5:30p call. In fact they said "no problem" in the call. Be sure to make a reservation. -Sangria pitcher: came out to 6 glasses! Yummy and fruity. A pitcher comes with a selection of 5 small bites which is fun to try. Worth it! -Brussel Sprouts: my favorite of the small plates. Well roasted with a yummy sauce that was on the sweeter side. -Mushroom Croquette: I loved the texture of this! After having some great Spanish Tapas down in Palo Alto, I was keen to look for more Tapas restaurants around the Berkeley area for restaurant week. Luckily we were able to find La Marcha Tapas, which gave a 5-course meal for $40 a person. The restaurant itself is pretty small and so the wait times may potentially get long, but fortunately some of the seats at the bar were open so we just took those. It seemed like the majority of the people around us were also there for restaurant week, and so when the food came out it would come out in waves for multiple groups so people would get them at the same time. I came with another person to the restaurant, so we were able to order multiple items from each course and share them. Here are some of the more notable dishes: Croqueta de Rabo de Buey/Croqueta de Bacalao: These croquettes were very good and super crispy on the outside! Although these were pretty small, the flavor was delicious and I really enjoyed the presentation of this dish. Patatas con Queso y Chorizo/Patatas Alioli con Cangrejo: These potatoes reminded me of a fancier version of Taco Bell's Cheesy Fiesta potatoes, and they were still pretty good! The chorizo and crab that was added to the dishes enhanced the flavor, and the potatoes were really crispy. These were decently filling in the meal. Pulpo: I liked the presentation of the dish, although the actual amount of octopus served was pretty small within the dish. However, it did taste pretty good and the texture was soft. Paella Moruna/Arroz Negro: The Paellas were alright, although I personally wasn't a huge fan of them. The pieces of chicken are pretty flavorful, but I didn't really like the rice as much since it was not that soft. I think some people would really like this dish, but it just wasn't one that vibed with me. Overall, this place was a pretty good choice for restaurant week even if it was on the pricey side. The dishes themselves can get to be expensive, but I know they have some good deals during happy hour so I might come again around then. read more

I absolutely love tapas, and if I had my Way, it's my preference to truly enjoying a meal. There's something to be said about being able to taste a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and enjoying the moment of that taste sensation. I've been looking for a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion and Berkeley has so many wonderful offerings no matter which cuisine you may want at that time. I had read about La Marcha, and immediately booked an online reservation through Yelp. Thank you Yelp for having the ability to do this. Just as a diners tip heads up, I would encourage you to always follow through directly with the restaurant to confirm reservations or anything specific that you may be requesting. The restaurant is only open starting at 4 PM through the evening and they are not open for brunch/lunch etc. Parking is practically nonexistent as is most of the area. You may luck out and find metered street parking but it is few and far between. This is definitely one of those places that you probably want to hire a car to drop you off and pick you up. I had called around 4:30 the afternoon of our booked dinner time to ask what they would do about a birthday celebration. I will say the call was painful, and I literally had to attempt six different calls to finish the initial conversation that I had with the restaurant when we became disconnected. The restaurant didn't even bother to call me back so I had to pursue calling them back. I won't say that they hung up on me but somehow the call was disconnected. Seating I had read was predominantly going to be at the bar for a party of smaller sizes. The intent of my phone call was to ensure that I wasn't going to be sitting at a bar celebrating a birthday but I wanted to sit at a table. Granted, I had no idea that this restaurant is incredibly small and found that out when I arrived. I still would not of been happy at the bar as it does not offer the ambience for special celebration. In fact, I would strongly suggest not sitting at the bar even for a date. It's incredibly impersonal. We were seated at a eight person high top which doesn't offer much room. We were brought the menu along with a wine list. Had I not been driving, I absolutely would've liked to enjoy some of the specialty wines that they have on the menu that I don't often see at other restaurants. The wait staff was incredibly sweet ones they were able to come over and take our order. I will say that they showed consistent preference to those sitting at the table that are multi lingual. I only speak English and sailor, but the others that were with me or multi lingual and were able to translate to me. We ordered the paella, which takes at least 30+ minutes to prepare, and is a good excuse for enjoying tapas. If you were looking to be completely European and ordering in a proper fashion, rumor has it that you should never order more than two tapas prior to a meal. Who knew?! Like I said, I could just enjoy tapas and be happy. The tapas were absolutely delicious!! The calamari with the squid ink super delicious. Everything we had is worth having again. I would highly recommend that if you go with a date, or a large party keep in mind that the paella is definitely shareable for 3 to 4 people. Reservations are a must as walk-ins will definitely be a very long wait. Seating is incredibly limited and no one is dining and leaving in less than 2-3 hours. We were there almost three hours. This is a place where you go to enjoy a good food, good beverages, and great company. My only true complaint is that the restaurant is very warm and you will feel like you're having your own personal summer. Dress light! It gets stuffy/hot in there as well. The paella tres cerditks was ok, it had arugula, pork belly, peppers but it was salty. The bimi which was brocolini was good with a interesting cheesey paste. Had two croquettes one was ham and other rabbit and duck liver. Those both were pretty good. The service was pretty good. No complaints there. I'd come back and get a bunch of tapas. read more

I've eaten here many many times, so I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place before. Overall great little tapas place in Berkeley which is one of the better tapas restaurants I've tried, and I've tried a lot. We always forget to make a reservation, so we usually have to settle for the bar. Our favorite items are the pimientos de padron, the marinated olives, and the paella. Personally I like the paella mixta which has meat and seafood. The tres cerditos is good too, but sometimes the meat can be over cooked. Don't except doting service, at least not at the bar because it's usually very busy, but we never mind as we are usually too busy eating. read more

We started off with the patatas bravas always a mainstay of almost every tapas restaurant we have been to, which were very crispy and doused in a healthy amount of ñora sauce which has a nice spicy kick. We also ordered the prawns which were covered in a delicious garlic and herb sauce and coca focaccia bread, which was decent but in my honest opinion just tasted like cheesy bread with some bougie ingredients (pears, walnuts) thrown on top. We finished off with the bimi which was the broccolini served with a delicious Romesco and idiazabal cheese which were a perfect combination and definitely the highlight of my meal. The only negative of my experience (no fault of the restaurant) was having to watch this couple seated at the bar who were getting a little too intimate in public. Nail, meet head. Every plate here, every drink, all the ambience, the servers, they all nailed it. Well, it was also cacophonously loud, so I couldn't hear my party, but other than that. The sangria is good. So good, you might start craving the drink at random times and calling them up to ask the recipe. The portion is a criminally low half glass though. The tapas are good, and you will find yourself reordering a few since portions are on the smaller side (they are tapas after all), it gives you a chance to try out a few things. Mmm my first tapas experience in Berkeley! I made reservations for two on a Friday night at 5pm and thankfully the restaurant wasn't too busy. Service is great, and our first two dishes came out super fast. As of August 2021, you scan a QR code that lists the full menu and then you order with your waiter. For two people, we ordered a glass of sangria each and five tapas to share. This was plenty! Next time, I might try a paella and then get one or two tapas. Out of the different dishes, the Albondigas and Pulpo were my favorites. The Albondigas has four boar and beef meatballs and the most delicious tomato sauce! I wish it was served with more bread so the sauce wouldn't go to waste. The Pulpo is slow-cooked octopus (so, so good) and just all-around beautifully plated. The white and red sangria was refreshing but not too sweet. It definitely tasted more like wine with some fruit submerged. Next time I might go for a full bottle of red! read more

A tapas place with a happy hour with REAL TAPAS. I am mad at myself for not finding this place sooner. Yes, if you've ever been to Spain, in certain parts, you get free appetizers with you order of an alcoholic beverage. This applies here during happy hour, though the portions are small, STILL. Made a reservation for 2 and got seated with no problems. FOOD: PIQUILLOS RELLENOS. Fresh, flavorful peppers cooked perfectly with a cheese filling that was absolutely incredible. Smooth, tangy, and flavorful. Topped with a bit of breadcrums for style and mouthfeel points. Amazing. CALAMARES FRITOS. Good quality squid. Their batter was amazing. Salty with lots of paprika and the squid ink was SO good here. Highly recommended. ALBÓNDIGAS. Juicy, flavorful, succulent meatballs in a nice and oily tomato sauce over some bread. So tasty, with such good texture. Also recommended. COCA. Not on the happy hour tapas menu, but DAMN this was good. Light fluffy foccachia with perfect sweet and savory mixes. Roasted walnuts on top for the nice crunch and added sweetness. SO GOOD. CAULIFLOWER. Bacon, big flavor and crisped perfectly. Roasted cauliflower for good texture and caramelization. The sauces were perfect on this too. EVERYTHING WAS SO FREAKING GOOD. I couldn't believe how excellent each and everything that came out was. Service was good, but a bit slow when I first got there. Not sure if some servers were just late, but they figured it out and everything went smoothly. I will be back here as fast as I can. read more
