Perfect traditional Paris outside patio eatery with the charismatic server Gaston treated us great. Amazing cheese charcuterie board and the Crispy Fried Chicken with Chili Sauce. If I was not so overweight, I would have ordered two more cheese plates. The Blonde Paillette beer from Normandy was excellent. The mixed gender bathroom was downstairs and was old but clean. If you're searching for a French restaurant with traditional Paris charm look no further. From the moment we arrived the staff pushed together three little tables for a great outside patio experience just like seen in every movie in Paris. The French food was good as expected but the crispy fried chicken with chili sauce was incredible. Also recommend the large cheese board which is plenty for two people. One of the ubiquitous cafes in Paris. You can virtually stop at any one of them to enjoy a decent meal. Being a typical cafe, the tables are usually too small to comfortably hold ones meals. While we are not fluent in French, the staff was considerate enough to speak with us in English. read more

A simply superior French cafe. The headline story is the interior decorating and the atmosphere. But the food and drink command respect as well. * * * Look and feel is a huge issue here. This is NOT another another artificial attempt to recreate a French cafe of Toulouse-Lautrec's era for the sake of the tourists. This is a real deal just-the-way-it-was cafe of the 1950's and early 60's. Think Yves St Laurent. Think Jacque Tati. Think Francoise Sagan. Modernisme rules. Split level design is cool. Think shining steel. Think glass. Think white marble. No warm woods. No chalkboard. You sit here. You feel chic. You wish there were Ye Ye girls singing in the background. Artistically, the architect and interior decorators nailed everything good about that period. * * * The execution of French staples is absolutely superior here. My oeufs mayonnaise was made with genuine homemade mayonnaise - Not something out of a jar. Freshly made in the kitchen mayonnaise tastes nothing like Hellman's or institutional mayonnaise. Better still, each egg was grounded in a small pedestal of unsalted fresh butter. Cold fresh sweet butter makes all of the difference in an oeufs mayonnaise. I had that dish about six times while I was in Paris. The La Mascotte version stands out notably. * * * La Mascotte also does an extremely superior Salade Nicoise. No canned tuna here. Freshly sauteed seared on the outside rare on the inside tuna. Perfect hard boiled eggs. (A rarity in a Salad Nicoise.) Red peppers to die for. Subtle but wonderful anchovies. And a host of other attractions including lots of artichoke hearts. I adore Salade Nicoises in general. This one is something special. * * * They also have a superior bar. Most places will have okay cognac, okay armagnac and a bottom of the line eau de vie. The cheapie downscale places will have Kahlua. Here they pour a superb Belgian mandarine liqueur, Mandarine Napoleon. Mandarine Napoleon makes Grand Marnier look like cheap orange brandy for collegiate drinks. It is a warm, rich, intensely orange, not at all cloying, clean, warm liqueur. Other cafes do stock Mandarine Napoleon, but it is not common. The bar was filled with offerings of this caliber. Between the decorating and the bar options, I could have stayed at La Mascotte all day and all night, drinking, And been supremely happy. * * * La Mascotte is near the Seine, near the bridge to the Eiffel Tower. You are in Major Tourist Central. You are also near Avenue George V with the 88 star $$$$$$$$$ hotel the George Cinq. (That place has been bought out by the Four Seasons - So I suspect the supermodels of the world now stay elsewhere. The prices have not dropped.) So the local establishments are either total tourist rip offs or insanely expensive. (Tip: Avoid any cafe that offers you the "Real Paris Experience" in English on the front window.) La Mascotte will give you absolutely superior food and drink in a room that captures the Paris of Jean Luc Godard and Georges Brassens. (Okay, the Paris frequented by the bourgeoisie of the era of Jean Luc Godard and Georges Brassens, not the artistes.) Still, Style is style. Chic is chic. ************************** If you read the other Yelp reviews, You can see that there is a lot of whining here from American tourists. They complain about 1) Waiters not understanding them. 2) The steaks. The tourist cafes nearby specialize in serving (and overcharging) Americans. The waiters all speak English and the food is nothing special. La Mascotte is a little farther back from the Eiffel Tower and gets more of a French clientele from the nearby upscale neighborhoods. Not all of the help speaks English. Their basic clientele is French. As for steaks, French cafes everywhere are known for cheap tough miserable steaks. Steack Frites are rarely a good idea anywhere. I have one seen one good French steak while I have been here - at a famous Cafe called the Bouillon Julien. There is a lot of shoe leather. Americans visiting Paris. French cafe food is good but French steaks are terrible. Plan accordingly. The Yelp tourists think this is a three star place. This reflects the tourists. A wonderful experience, from start to finish! A warm welcome by Cedric, seated inside near the window, where we could comfortably watch the world go by, we enjoyed a delectable meal of Boeuf Tataki, Calamari, Salmon Tartare, Boeuf Bourguignon, and Chocolate Mousse, served promptly by a remarkably friendly staff. Walking around Paris, becoming hangry we finally chose this place to eat. I hadn't ran across any difficulties with anyone up until our lunch here. The service was slow and it was the only time on our whole trip that communication was an issue. Aside from that, the food was good, not great though. I ordered the chicken with fries and a creme brûlée. The chicken was covered in a mushroom sauce that was excellent. The fries were good and the creme brûlée was okay. My husband had the pasta and he liked it. My daughter had the sirloin and fries. We asked for medium but it was medium rare and definitely NOT sirloin. Ordering was so difficult, especially asking for water. We ended up with a huge bottle of Evian that we didn't ask for. read more

There are many cafes to choose from in Paris. We chose La Mascotte for our lunch. We had the special of the day. Flank steak, medium rare with french fries and side salad. There is always bread and lots of it. If you come here try the escargot, it's good. Not sure about parking. Easy metro access (Alma -Marceau) near ave Marceau and president Wilson Ave. Try this place. The French people eat here so if it's good for them, it's very good for me. read more

The waiter never came to check on the meal so I ate the cup of salad and returned the steak and fries, with no appetite to eat any other junk off this menu. They refused to come the meal. Started out with the escargot, and I haven't met any I haven't liked yet. My main dish was steak frites. It just wasn't that tasty. My husband and I stumbled upon this place on our first night in Paris. We were pretty exhausted and hungry from traveling and touring and after just briefly skimming Yelp reviews we decided that we didn't want to spend too much on this Restaurnt and so just ordered from the quick menu. My husband had the stake and fries dish and I had the cream brûlée and a glass of wine. The food was okay, not great and not the worst, but everything was basic and almost void of taste. There are so many other great restaurants in the area and in Paris. Although, the service was fast, the food quality was subpar. This place is fine if you are hungry and just looking for anywhere to grab a bite and are not too picky. There was also a lot of smoke coming into the Restaurnt from the smoking section outside. Great place for dinner. They had a fixed "quick" menu which consisted of a meal (plat) and a dessert. I went with the steak and fries for my entree and creme brûlée for dessert. DO NOT GET THE CHEESECAKE! It's a weird eggy, soggy mess that is not edible. If you learn anything from this review, I hope that stays with you. They run a tight ship and seem very efficient upon first impression. One head waiter/maitre-d' seemed to be all over things, taking care of things before you ask. We got a tender beef and fries plate and a pork tenderloin with potatoes dish. They were both poor cuts of meat with a lot of sinewy meat and fat but the taste was decent. The sauce that was on the pork tasted a bit like canned soup but both were at least edible. It was the cheesecake that really offended me. We really should have asked for something else but somehow everyone disappeared or was constantly busy with something though the flow of customers had ebbed. We didn't even take a few more bites just to be sure what is wrong with it. The cheesecake part tasted like a tasteless steamed egg custard with a texture more like omelet than cake. The graham part was soaked through with some kind of liquid, totally uneven and did not have any taste (possibly due to being soaked by broken egg protein?). It was awful. All in all, the service was excellent in the beginning but petered out at the end. The dishes are way overpriced for the cut of meat and abilities of the chef. And for the love of god, do not get the cheesecake. I would recommend the cheese plate that the locals seemed to be getting - seems to be the only safe choice here. read more

Just rented an apartment in this area so we were looking for a neigborhood resto to hang out at. But, we had an aweful meal there last night. Ate one bite of each and could not eat the grey pork loin and potatoes that were both obviously cooked much earlier and barely reheated. Yuck! No options to get any money back. Ok so as other people have said communication is a huge issue here! Bring your translator app for sure. My party ordered beer to start then waited "forever" for a server. We had to go and ask for a menu, they didn't even come check up on us! The bread was tasty, chicken wings were ok, vegetarian salad was good, cheese burger taste very good, calamari was huge, & the Italian salad had a huge bug in it!!!!! I don't know what happened with that! How you make a "fresh" salad and don't see the bug the size of a pinkie nail ! All dishes have a very reasonable price + they have a menu of the day, which is different every day. Overall really great experience!! We went here after walking around all day and utterly exhausted. They were kind when I asked to sit inside by the window (don't like to sit outside because of the smokers) but still wanted to people watch. The Le Versant white wine was amazing, and I was craving a cheeseburger and fries so I was thankful they had that on the menu. Beware though, order it more done than you usually would in the US. I always order it medium well, but this burger came out medium rare. Should ordered it extra well done. It was tasty but I wasn't able to eat the middle part of the burger.
