Best tamales I ever ate! Juicy and full of meat. Jalapeño tortillas were also delicious. Prices were great!

I can honestly say I had the worst meal I picked up at this location. The red chili beef was the worse tasting item. The only thing you could taste was an excessive amount of chili powder and beef, absolutely no flavor at all. It was not edible. We also ordered the refried beans, it was like they scooped it right out of a can, and did not add anything to it. absolutely no flavor not edible as well. They had a good plan in place for Xmas eve walk in for tortillas and the line moved appropriately. I arrived around 11 on Xmas eve and was still able to pick up tortillas with no problem but the selection was minimal. This is by far my favorite tortilla shop on the eastside for fresh tortillas. I have tried the corn, flour and the lard, they are all great and come in many different sizes. I ended up getting green corn tamales as well and I'm so happy I didn't serve them for Christmas. They were very poorly made. Even after steaming them The masa was chunky and so much skin in it the insides were very dark and almost orange which I assume was the cheese. I ended up throwing them away they were inedible. So my rating is based on the tortillas not the tamales. read more

La Mesa has the best tortillas on the east side of Tucson. It is our go to since we are far east siders...if I feel like taking a drive St. Mary tortillas are my first choice. Today, I decided to explore their red chile burros and refried beans. Sadly it was a complete disappointment. Red chile was watered down with no flavor at all. Seriously I can not recommend this at all. The shredded meat was cooked fine but again no flavor. The refried beans with smashed with some whole beans mixed in and they were just okay. No real flavor again. Service is always excellent, friendly and fast. Their place of business is always clean and welcoming. Food was not good...at all and that makes me sad to write this. Food was thrown all together like garbage when I got home after I unwrapped the tamale it was small the green chili tamale was way too sweet full of sugar tasted nasty made me want to vomit, beans were undercooked & bland tasting & all the items there for sale had processed oil in them they didn't look healthy at all plus young girl working there had a rude little attitude problem wasn't the brightest bulb in the place nope won't be back!!! read more

Not sure what's going on here. La Mesa was a decent option in the past but our most recent experience (May 1 2025) was very disappointing. Bought six green corn tamales and a dozen medium-sized flour tortillas. Service was fine but the quality of the food has deteriorated over the past years. Four or the six tamales fell apart into lumps when unrolled from the husks. They also had excessive masa build-up on the ends. Not well made. The tortillas claim to be made with lard - I wonder how much and the quality. I always heat the flour tortillas on a pan on the stove-top for a few seconds. Increasing flavor and flexibility. The result with these - as per my normal process - resulted in something more like a roofing shingle than a flour tortilla. Won't be back - returning to gathering goods from Tucson's west side. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. My wife had a green chile beef burrito and I had a green chile beef quesadilla. Both were very tasty. The staff was friendly and gave me a primer on the various tortillas they sell. It was evident that they have their regulars who love their tortillas. I met the owner who was very friendly. The title of this place peaked my interest, as I'm a BIG fan of homemade tortillas! We walked in and the first impression I got was an unfriendly and unwelcoming vibe. I said, "Hello" twice before the lady (owner) acknowledged and finally smiled. After asking if this was our first time there and we said, "Yes," she loosened up and started talking to us. My husband and I shared a "nacho" plate with their red beef and one recommended chicken quesadilla. They have drinks, but just Kirkland brand bottled water, and cans of sodas. No ice or cups. Our meals came out fairly quickly and the girl who delivered them was friendly. Sadly, our nachos were bland. The tortilla chips lacked flavor and salt. The red beef and beans also needed a sprinkle of flavor. The chicken quesadilla was the most flavorful on our table. Their "salsa" is just roughly chopped tomatoes and green onions. The tortillas that made up our quesadilla was ok. With friendlier service, and a bit of flavoring, I could rank this place higher. I'm from Arizona and missed fresh tortillas dearly. My friend ordered me a few dozens on a Saturday and they were shipped to Tampa by Tuesday. The best mail ivd ever had! EVERYONE talks about La Mesa Tortillas on the east side! When I finally stopped in, I was already gluten-free on doctor's orders, so I asked about corn tortillas. You guys. La Mesa doesn't make their own corn tortillas, but they have a selection of fresh, locally made corn tortillas and THEY HAVE CHANGED TACOS FOREVER! The La Noria corn tortillas they carry are made in Tucson and are the most moist, fluffy, soft corn tortillas. Your food feels like it's wrapped in a tamale when you eat these. We've been coming to this store for many years and have noticed a sad decline in quality and a big jump in prices. We tried the store on Pima and they have the soft, better quality tortillas that we had become accustomed to. The tortillas here dry out after just a day or so. They break and crack when trying to roll them even after heating up for a little bit. read more

Not sure what the deal is but the last 2 times I bought Tortillas from them I was disappointed. After 2 days on my counter and 2 days in the frig, they were so stiff you could have used as a weapon! Followed freshness instructions, from them. They're too expensive for me. I'll be buying mine from Costco from now on. Good luck. read more

The tortillas are okay- the Pima store definitely puts out a far superior tortilla, may be due to the people working there I'm sure can't do much with flour lard water some salt, but people who makes a difference. The female at the counter that helped me when I walked in was very rude, taller, older maybe the owner, maybe the manager- maybe just a worker. By far ,the BEST tortillas!!! Try their famous jalapeño tortilla (yummm) Decor is very very basic, but staff is friendly ( not over the top friendly ) but just enough to get you what you want. Flour tortillas are pricey - $6.50/doz. - and small. Some in my pack were 9 inches in diameter, others more like 8. Half of them looked like amoebas. Uneven and not even close to being round. Nothing special about the taste or texture either. You can get locally made tortillas better than these at a number of markets. Chicken tamales were a disaster. Very ordinary flavor and masa in between every layer of the husks. Had to scrape the masa off with a knife. Looked more like a scramble of masa with some chicken when I finally got them out. No pride in the preparation. Just thrown together. Considering La Mesa's prices as well you can do better elsewhere. They used to be better. read more

It was an exciting day when La Mesa Tortillas opened on the east side at Broadway and Pantano. It's the only place to buy freshly made tortillas for us east side people. The offerings vary in size, flour, whole wheat and sometimes flavors. Great for wraps. The corn tortillas are produced locally too and sold in the store. They offer locally made chorizo fresh or frozen. There's bags of fresh corn chips too. La Mesa has dine in food and a few tables. We haven't tried it yet but need to get it on our list. read more

We've been buying La Mesa fresh flour tortillas and their green chile beef for years. Every time in the past they've been fresh and wonderful. Last week I got one of the last 2 packages of tortillas - not warm, but I got there at 1 pm on Saturday, and thought it was fine. At home we discovered that they were dry and lacked the usual flavor. The beef was over-the-top spicy, and green chili beef has never been that "hot" before. We also got some (frozen) green corn tamales - they tasted old and bitter. Not sure if someone new is at the helm, but all of this food was "off" from our experience dating back about 10 years. Might try them again, but hope they correct these issues. Tortillas are over priced and even for home made at their facility they taste and hold together worse than the packages you can buy at any mexican meat market, or food city in town for half the price. I was very excited to try them hoping they would taste and hold up to the tortillas u ised to buy in Nogales, but was let down with a poor effort to try and make an authentic home atyle tortilla. This is my go to for fresh tortillas, the very best you can find on the Eastside of Tucson, but when did customer service not be the top priority?! I came in and although I wasn't the only customer there, the lady at the register seemed bothered that I came in. She didn't address me, just told me my total, continued on with other client, all while my card was waiting to be processed. I've been purchasing tortillas here for years! They are always fresh and warm, the kids always end up devouring a couple before we even make it home. They have recently started selling premium local chorizo by the pound in hot and mild and trust me it's amazing and not greasy. You'll be hooked! read more

One word: YUM! I just got home from picking up 11 dozen tortillas from La Mesa. OK, they're not all for me... they're for my parents' super bowl party tomorrow. We get La Mesa tortillas for pretty much every big party that my parents have. They are delicious, fresh, and hot. I may or may not have eaten 3 of them already. Plain. Yep, they are that good. This time, I got 6 dozen "medium" (the most common size you'll get in the grocery store). I also got 5 dozen "small," which are, well, smaller and a little bit thicker and, frankly, my absolute favorite. They also have a large size, plus corn, wheat, and jalapeno tortillas. You can also buy burritos or other lunchy items, but I don't know that I ever have. I do know that, when I used to live in California, I would take dozens of these tortillas home and freeze them. Yep, they are good enough to earn luggage space. Friends, that is a sure sign of a good tortilla. One note, they take only cash or check, something I always have to remember as I tend to pay for everything in plastic. read more

Definitely a fan of the food. Service was another matter. Cranky/spacey woman took our orders. A posted special featured a tamale combo plate (two tamales, your choice, plus rice and beans) for $6; an extra tamale for an extra $1.25. I asked for two extras so the plate would have two green corn and two red beef tamales. This threw her; she said I could only get one extra tamale for $1.25 but the second extra would cost $3.00. Fine, I said, charge whatever you need to. She did, and it totaled almost as much as a second combo plate. But when the order came out, there was only one extra. When I pointed it out she repeated that I only got one extra tamale for $1.25. The place was packed and the food cheap so I didn't argue. The tamales were AMAZING and the salsa that came with the plate was super-fresh and flavorful. So I recommend this place. You can get them in bulk to carry out, which I would recommend. If you dine in, just stick with the program and you should be OK. read more
