When you go shopping around Broadway Plaza, you first notice the freshly baked bread aroma from La Baguette. They cleverly leave their door open to entice you into buying their delights. It works every time. But with another sniff, you start to realize a faint scent mixed with all of the baked goods: the fresh tortillas from La Mesa a few doors down. I always took fresh tortillas for granted because I grew up in South Tucson where they were easy to find. But in my current home in Eastside Tucson, there's not a lot to choose from. Luckily, these tortillas make up for it. They are so good that I can eat them plain. If you look carefully, there is a big machine in the back room where they make these tortillas throughout the day. La Mesa's greatest strength is that they never overstock and let the tortillas sit on the counter too long. I come here quite often and every time I pick up a pack off the counter, they are hot. Unfortunately, I have tried their other items such as their burro or quesadilla combo plates, but they don't compare to the other places around town. Just stick to their mouthwatering tortillas. If you like things spicy, try their jalepeño tortillas. No matter the tortilla, you are sure to love it. read more

I was looking for fresh and local small business and yelp came up with la mesa tortillas I bought a dozen flour large tortillas I liked the fact that they are made fresh everyday ! They were a little dry I don't know if they put to much flour in them or what or not enough fat , they were better when we made quesadillas out of them !!! The green chile burrito wasn't great but wasn't terrible. I wouldn't mind stopping by to try other stuff from the menu, but here is the big BUT... customer service! Is the lady at the counter the owner?!?! If not, was she having a bad day or she just didn't like me? They have good (not blow me away, good) home-made tortillas. Not sure how that qualifies as 5 stars mexican restaurant. Their Burrito which I had to ask them to make was watery shredded beef in a tortilla... that's it. not extra ingredients, nothing. Their chips and salsa (which you have to buy, not complimentary with meal) were stale and uninspired. The service made me the customer feel like I was hasseling them when I had a question about their VERY small menu. My mom grew up making stacks of tortillas daily for her many siblings. She lives out of town. When I go to visit her, she requests that I bring these tortillas. Now I am not in anyway a tortilla expert but in my neighborhood, which is as far removed from South Tucson as these tortillas are from the neighboring La Baguette's baguettes, these are the best tortillas going. Pretty much any time you go into the store there are a few bags on the counter, which means any time you go in there you can get a hot, fantastic tortilla. They sell them in small taco size ones, medium burrito size ones and giant burro sized ones. You can also get them in whole wheat and jalapeno (which are spicy, and not just white people spicy like "oh what's in here black pepper? Oh too spicy!" but like "D-amn!"). You should not get them when you are hungry because sitting on your front seat smelling like they do and feeling so warm and supple under your hand as you lay them down you will have to open them up, then you are screwed because not only are they fantastic out of the bag but not surprisingly they are filling, probably a tad fattening as well. So in summary, get some of the small ones and some of the large ones, snack on the small ones, then use the large ones when you get home. A bag or two of these are indispensable on a road trip , just frisbee them back to the kids, and they are heads and shoulders and giraffe heads and shoulders above any brand you can get at your grocery store. They make the best flour tortillas! I've ordered them in the past when we have a big business luncheon and were serving Mexican food. We picked them up fresh that day and they were still warm when we made it to our location. If you need a bunch of tortillas, order ahead, they go fast! You can't always just walk in and get a ton on a whim. So worth the planning ahead. read more

I just had the red chili beef plate lunch. It comes with beans, rice, and 2 pretty decent size fresh tortillas. At $9, it's a decent value. The tortillas themselves were wonderful, and if I was just rating those I'd give 5 stars. The rest of the food, however, was very bland and badly needed salt, especially the beef. Just wasn't much flavor to it overall. P.S. The infamous red-haired woman was there, but she was sweet as pie as far as I could tell, even laughing and joking. So ymmv with her, I guess. My first time going here and I've lived so close to this business. They do serve lunch and there are an assortment of different kinds of tortillas from wheat to corn plus you can buy tortilla chips too. I do want to try their lunch sometime however the woman working the cash register was rude and seemed annoyed with people coming in and out of the store. read more

Don't bother buying your tortilla's elsewhere, unless you're headed to the south side. La Mesa tortilla's are stupidly legit. If you come early enough you can literally watch them bag your dozen. Great tortillas. Most times I go in to the Broadway store the tortillas are still warm in the bag and when I eat them they just melt in my mouth. I can't resist picking up some chips either which are substantial and have a rich corn flavor. My son loves the kick of the jalapeño tortillas, and my wife thinks the whole wheat ones are 'healthy', but I'm a plain flour kind of guy and sometimes grab and eat a still steaming one out of the bag on the drive home. So I just want my family to know that 'a dozen tortillas' is actually twelve, not eleven. I have not eaten off the menu except to grab a container of red chili once when I didn't have much time to cook. It was alright, though a bit salty, but the tortilla I wrapped it in was great. I guess if you call yourself La Mesa Tortillas you specialize in one thing and do it very well. That is fine with me. read more

Come in at 5 and order the special. I'm told they are no longer serving lunch. Ok, so I tried to order from the regular menu and the guy behind the counter asked what size cup I want. Their in-house flour tortillas are great, as everyone attests, but the Luly's corn tortillas they sell are also some of the best I've found in Tucson. (Trader Joe's store brand are on a par though.) I love coming here and picking up a package of fresh, hot tortillas and a big ol' container of refried beans. I've driven by here a myriad of times but never gone in for lunch. I had a combo today and it was yummy, just-spicy-enough chicken tacos, refried beans and rice. The salsa was really, really good - not quite like any other salsa I've had. There was a line to the door of people buying both tortillas and salsa to go, and five of the six tables were full. RC beverages, but I'm getting used to finding them in small businesses here in Tucson, though not my favorite. Will definitely return. read more
