My quest for the holy grail of chorizo in Tucson has finally ended!!!!! Ever since American Meat Market shut it's doors, I've cried actual tears over the end of chorizo breakfasts at my house because...well...all other chorizo pales in comparison. I walked in to La Mesa, looked to the right in the little refrigerated case and DUN DUN DUUUUN!! A sight to behold; multiple packages of that spicy, mouth watering chorizo. The packaging is different. It no longer says American Meat Market but is now labeled as Islas Meat Company (the same family that owned American Meat). And still at an amazing price of $5 per package. They are also selling this gift from the Mexican gods at the Orange Grove/Thornydale location. Sunday morning breakfast is no longer a picture of darkness and sadness. Thank you La Mesa and Islas Meat Company!!! For this alone, I rate you five stars. read more

We decided to try to this place because they were on our dining card, and had a buy one get one. There was a steady stream of traffic coming in while we lunched to buy tortillas, and the tortillas were definitely tasty. The service and the actual lunch food were another story. We were told there was a .50 cent fee to use our debit or credit card - what?? So, I tried to paid to pay with $100.00 bill and that didn't happen either... she couldn't take it. We ordered combo plates for lunch, birria, and tacos. The rice was dry and completely flavorless, and beans tasted at least a day old, and very dry. There were no fountain drinks, just cans of soda. The meat was fine, and tortillas very good - I think they just need to stick to tortillas. read more

The TORTILLAS Excellent -HONESTLY the tortillas from Pima Street are great - but to pay $5.50 and add .75 for extra cheese for the Bean Burrito, the cheese was at one end of it maybe, and .10 cent worth of cheese I could see charging. And the salsa (and yes it was free but) it was can stewed tomatoes from a CAN and a few green onions added and maybe tabasco sauce for a hint of flavor. And then Beans had absolutely NO FLAVOR to them, so $6.25 is just not worth it - if you take out the .45cents for the tortilla oh that was worth, it just plain or butter put on it. But don't buy a Bean burrito unless you like plain no flavor and ask for extra cheese and don't get any. Buy the tortillas there great - and they are 5 Stars - there beans 1 star or maybe a 1/2 a star. read more

The tortillas from this place are fantastic! They are true Mexican Nana (grandma) style! The have also different flavors like Jalapeño! Spicy goodness! I may update my review after I actually get to eat my food. We have been sitting here for 20 minutes waiting for 4 tamales to be heated up. Three different customers have complained that theirs were not heated so she had to re-heat those meals before heating ours. It's absurd. My 4 year old could figure out how to operate a microwave better than the girl working here. When I checked in on our meals, the girl told me "Yeah, the microwave is kind of busy now." Good grief! How did I not know about you, La Mesa Tortillas?! Every Tucsonan should be buying tortillas from you! I just bought a package of the Jalapeno Tortillas and 2 Pineapple Empanadas. The gentleman at the counter was friendly and very helpful, explaining the various tortillas, how they're made fresh daily, and even included 2 little ramekins of salsa for me to try. As soon as I came home I heated a tortilla up, spread some real butter on top, and O...M...G...! Soft, chewy, spicy goodness is what this is! I'm going to make a quick dinner egg burrito for me to take with me to work tonight, and I'll try the salsa then. And that empanada! Ok, so friends keep tellig me to stop eating the empanadas from Wal-Mart (Go ahead...judge away!) because the're not REAL empanadas. They were correct. This was flaky, crisp, crusty goodness with what seems to be an almost carmelized pineapple filling inside. LOVE! LOVE, I say!! I'm going back for a bag of chorizo and more tortillas. It hurts to see so many negative reviews for this place. I've been coming here since I was 8. I just turned 19 and of course one of my top priorities was getting tortillas and meat. I can tell it has changed a lot but every time I go in I see people working hard. The chicken quesadilla is my staple. Honestly no place beats it for me. It may just be preference for some people but stand by believing that la Mesa has the best tortillas. I rarely ever enjoy any other tortillas from a store. I think their strength is having the ability to take home the ingredients and make it yourself. If you can't do that and enjoy it then you shouldn't complain about how they are doing it. Really nice! Went by for a lunch special and had, for about 7 bucks with tax, a plate of your choice along with two large tortillas and beans/rice. I got the chicken green chili. Food came up fast with some prep, and everything here was done in one open room. Lots of chips and tortillas available to go and bulk foods, and some empanadas they make (delicious, not too much fruit!). The food was great and I love that it wasn't very salty. The most unsalty food I've found in Mexican eating! You can add your own salt and salsa etc but I felt great after, not too spicy, even though I love spicy, I wanted something that did not overwhelm me and leave very thirsty. This was it! Beans tasty, good rice. I had plenty of tortilla to scoop. This isn't a fancy place and eating-in is probably rare since they have a handful of tables, but the staff were friendly and I'm eager to come back here or the other locations for further review. read more

I come in for the best tortillas in Tucson and usually leave with some tamales and apple empanadas...you just cant leave when there are so many tasty treats tantalizing your nose! but seriously, if you haven't tried them out - do! their tortillas are fresh. the bags are usually still steaming when you grab them off of the counter. I like the plain ones, but they have jalapeno flavored ones too. a bit to spicy for me, but my family loves them. Well I went to this establishment about a week ago and had tried a tamale and the tortillas and they were both very good. I then called to order for the following week for a dinner I was hosting and the gentlemen was very nice. I placed the order for pick up today and when I went in to get my order, they brought tamales out of the refrigerator. I asked if I could get one of the many bags of tamales they were preparing that were still warm and the lady asked if I was serving them today, I said yes and she asked told the man she was working with that I wanted warm tamales and he said "no, you can only have the ones from the refrigerator." I thought this was very rude and very poor customer service. At $65 for two dozen tamales and 2 dozen tortillas, you would think you could get the one's you wanted; ie warm ones!! I will not be going back. Their tamales are good, but the customer service was quite poor and there are too many places in Tucson where I can get good tamales to go back there where customer service is not a top priority. read more

Recently purchased half a dozen green corn tamales and a half a dozen red chili tamales. Purchased tamales a few years ago as Christmas presents and they were awesome but something's changed. The masa in the red chili tamales while had great color was very dry and lacked flavor. The green corn tamales has a strange taste to them that I don't remember from before and they weren't completely cooked. So very disappointing, compared to last time. Might give them another try just to see if they were having an off day as it is really close to home. read more

Just moved to the neighborhood and was stoked to find a tortilla factory! After being there twice I'm not sure as to what they do... selling food isn't big on their list. The first time I was informed they don't sell food until after 11 am... open at 9 am. They have bulk items listed on the menu and a cooler with what appeared to be such items, I inquired if I could purchase some of them and was promptly reminded... no food til 11. This morning I had just dropped off my daughter at school and was driving by, saw the front door wide open and thought " warm tortillas". Upon walking in the store was greeted with a shout of " We're Closed" not good morning or how are you. I asked if I could purchase some of the tortillas on the counter and was then informed they were just preparing the food for later... I can understand if your busy or closed... but no excuse for being Dicks... and both times I've been there they've been Dicks. read more
