I don't usually do dessert after a large meal (ok, stretching the truth a little never hurt anyone right), but when I do, it's with an equally large amount of ice cream. La Michoacana serves some delicious, delicious Mexican ice cream from its location on Odana. I've never had Mexican ice cream before, but I might switch overly entirely to those after this experience. While most of their flavors are pretty standard (strawberry cheesecake, chocolate fudge, mint chocolate chip), they've also got some extremely unique flavors like goat's milk, tequila, pinecone, etc... Be warned that their "single scoop" is really more of "a few scoops here and there so it's enough to cover your entire cup". Which means that 2+ scoops will be enough for an entire meal. They let you sample everything, so take advantage of this and try something completely different. Unlike other kinds of ice cream I've had before, the ones at La Micoacana are extremely creamy and thick. This gives it more of sticky texture (think of stretching out a laffy taffy) and prevents it from melting as fast. It's not as soft, but the flavors are more compact. Oh, and they've got free Wi-Fi!! I will definitely be adding this to part of my West Towne routine. read more

Simple place, fun flavors. First Mexican ice cream shop in Dane County. The atmosphere is not remarkable: plastic tables & chairs, minimal decor. However, there are a ton of different flavors of ice creams & paletas, as well as aguas frescas (fruits blended with water), ice creams made with water rather than dairy, and a few savory snacks. Cash only at the moment. My paleta (ice cream pop) was piñón (pinenut). It consisted of a sweet, floral (not vanilla, more floral, not lavender) flavor with pinenuts in it. Pinenuts are quite expensive these days, so I was surprised that it had real pinenuts in it. I'm not sure how the flavor of the ice cream had anything to do with the pinenuts but they were a pleasant addition. The other flavor was Galletas Marías, which is based off of a cookie that's very popular in Mexico.Total for 1 scoop in a waffle bowl and 1 paleta was less than $6. Not much of an atmosphere inside, but enough interesting flavors to keep me coming back, especially if you want a lighter ice cream. read more

Over the past three years, Yelp has come to be our trusted guide when looking for things to eat. For the first time, however, we were let down. It wasn't the ice cream so much (we did not get to try it!), but rather the service. We walked into the establishment, and there were only two parties ahead of us. We took that opportunity to check out all the different flavors, and one of the servers behind the counter acknowledged us, saying she would be with us in a moment. Just as it appeared to be our turn, a large party of latinos came in, and they were waited on immediately, and ahead of us. Then came another, and guess what...so were they. I asked my wife who is also Latino what she thought, and she said let's leave, so we did. As good as everyone says it is. Real, authentic, Mexican ice cream. Not that "Mexican ice cream" is a thing in and of itself, unless you venture into something like the horchata or caramelized goat milk ice creams. But, the ice cream is legit, housemade greatness. And the experience is authentic Mexican. I was the only pasty kid in there, and I felt awful for not being confident enough in my tres años of Spanish to actually order in Spanish. (For the record, I could have if I had the balls to actually assert my knowledge...) I've had several flavors here, and they're all worth trying, but my favorite is BY FAR the goat milk. La Michoacana reminds me of the boba tea shops I find in LA, but with Mexican flair - lots of iconic sweet treats with just a bit of savory bad for you snacks. Plus,there are elotes and good old sliced fruit sticks served in a cup with chili pepper and lime juice. There is ice cream and paletas and mangonadas and chicharrones - all for low prices. We ordered ice cream in a cone. Single scoop was requested, but man, did she pack that down. It was SO much ice cream. I would've been happy with a junior cone or a mini cone. I got the cajeta flavor which is goat milk caramel, and my friend got the pistachio. Both were amazing, but even better together!! The cajeta was a rich caramel. We didn't taste the goat milk. The pistachio was a more subtle nutty flavor and not overly sweet. The two paired really well together, which worked well as we both grabbed extra spoons and shared the ice cream. Love this place. The staff was really friendly and helpful to our group of first-timers. The paletas were delicious, with a wide selection of flavors, and only about $2 each. I opted for a more savory dessert option. I was feeling adventurous and the hot cheetos with cheese option on the menu caught my eye. I watched with wonder as a serving of flaming hot cheetos was blanketed in warm nacho cheese. This treat is probably best to be shared (I, however, finished my entire order). This was obviously our first time here, so the young lady behind the counter was extremely helpful and described the differences between their multiple ice cream flavors. They have a lot of unique flavors you will never find anywhere else, including a tequila flavored ice cream that sounded very intriguing. I ended up getting their mint chocolate chip and my husband got a pistachio ice cream bar. I am not exaggerating when I say this was the best mint chocolate chip ice cream I have ever had. I don't know how to accurately describe it other then everything about it was simply wonderful. My husband felt the same way about his pistachio ice cream bar. I'm not entirely sure what they are doing differently here, but as long as they keep doing it! We will definitely be back, and next time I'm determined to try that tequila ice cream. read more

Such large servings! I had chocolate and coconut ice cream. The coconut ice cream had actual coconut shavings in it! It was super creamy. The chocolate had a hint of cinnamon, which was a surprise, but a great surprise! They had so many other options, it would probably take years to try them all. Their popsicles (paletas?) looked very fruity and colorful. They do not have actual food but a great option for after meal treats. Or you could just go there for the meal...whatever floats your boat! Our first visit to this joint in the heat of the weekend led us to some really good and homely ice cream experience! We decided to forgo the typical ice cream scoops and went in for their rather "Creative" Popsicle's!! Both the Strawberry n Cream and Cheesecake Popsicle's were milky and rich! The Strawberry one actually had large pieces of fruit in it, not something I expected from a candy bar!! So much fun! They will let you sample all of the ice cream and are happy to do it! They have a ton of unique flavors like corn, soursop, cotija (goat's milk caramel). My hubby stopped at La Michoacana today to buy some ice cream for me and I was impressed about how good they tasted! very natural and not too sweet. He got me the chocolate one (that was my favorite one), it was so light, full of cocoa flavor, you could even taste a nice touch of cinnamon, yummyyy! The other one (my boyfriend does not remember the name) but it was a white one and it tasted like a rum and raisins ice cream (if you have tried one) but they said they put tequila on it! Hmmm interesting, anyway, it tasted good, a little bit sweeter than the first one. The last one Was (yeah, I know, my hubby spoils me a lot) kind of like an icy treat in a cup (we call them raspados in my country) and it had smashed mangoes with some kind of chili (for me it was very mild) but for somebody with a sensitive palate be cautious, maybe you can ask for a sample before ordering it. Definitely a diamond in the rough. Don't go there for the ambiance or the great decor. Instead, try out any of their ice creams or paletas. All of it is the real deal and some of the flavors go way beyond the traditional ice cream flavors that I am used to. I went with the goat milk and caramel cajeta while my better half went with the pistachio. I was impressed with both. The cajeta was rich without being cloyingly sweet and the pistachio was chock full of its namesake. Serving sizes are gigantic so for $3, a single scoop is a great value. La Michoacana is a wonderful secret find. Tucked away on Odana Rd in a seldom trafficked strip mall they have some of the most unique flavors I've seen for Ice Cream (Tequila!) and it's all mostly delicious. Like the equally fabulous Mexican restaurant across the street (Los Gemelos), the experience here is pretty authentic. No flashiness or really much of a space for hanging around, but the product delivers. Some of the flavors sound like they are out of a science fiction movie and the smattering of other dishes is equally eye opening, but surprise is a good thing, especially in this case. Prices are mostly $5 or less for a good sized cone, and it's worth the trip just to see the flavors alone as well as the colorful array they make together. They give you a generous scoop of ice cream for less than 3 dollars, and have a host of other savory, authentic snacks which I'd love to come back and try. This place is a little scoop of heaven!! You can't go wrong - pistachio, strawberry with cheese, coconut, etc. All flavors came with the bits of its ingredients, which made the goodness last just a little longer. You can also make any ice cream flavors into milkshakes, I definitely recommend trying out the pistachio milkshake! They also sell authentic Mexican snacks, fruit popsicles, and horchata (milk drinks). Portions are large and ingredients are always fresh. A very unique shop. The ice cream was very good and a little different in texture than the usual ice cream. I guess I would say a little softer and creamy. I got the chocolate and coconut in a cone. It's a great value, large single scoop is $3 and they let me split it with two flavors. The selection of frozen bars, palletas, was extensive and looked very tempting. I'll have to try one next time. I went with my nieces and one of them said it reminded her of being in a foreign country with the TV playing Spanish programming and all the signs in Spanish first with the English after. Wow. Wow! Came here at 7:45 PM on a Thursday night. We were overwhelmed with all the options! We settled on cookies and cream and strawberry cheesecake. Both had chunks of cookie or strawberries and cheesecake chunks. We ordered two scoops of each, but stored some in the freezer when we got home. Scoops were ginormous! Like the size of baseballs. We entered the establishment on a Sunday night family outing. There was one other family just leaving the store as we entered. Loud rap music with profanity was blaring from the speaker. It was an immediate turn-off for us as we had our young 10-year son with us and we do not speak in such a vulgar way. I asked the young man at the counter to please change the music station because of the profanity in the music. In a very aggressive way, he said he would not and that I needed to place my order. After asking him several more times to stop the explicit music, we decided to leave. As we were leaving (and in front of the other employees), he told us in Spanish to suck his ****. We understood his unbelievable insult. We can't believe that this family-oriented place represents the Hispanic/Latinx community of Madison. In our opinion, the owners need to remove that employee and reform the reputation of their establishment--immediately. read more
