We have been coming to La Michoacana since they opened. I stumbled upon it as it is near the place I buy my work attire from. This place is pure perfection. For a MASSIVE sized scoop of ice cream for less than $3 in a multitude of rare flavors (goats milk, or tequila ice cream anyone?) you can't ask for much more. I would say excellent hidden gem but I don't think this place is so hidden any more! With each return the place is busier and busier. I'm sad I have to wait but I'm extremely happy for the business. Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and while I have not attempted to do so, I'm fairly certain they would be patient enough to sample every single flavor for you. Everything is made in house. They have a large variety of ice cream, aqua frescos, the hugest selection of popsicles I've ever seen, cups of fruit as well as some savory treats. The ice cream is amazing. Most flavors are either fruit based, nut based or just something completely different. The cajeta (which tastes like a cross between caramel and brown sugar) is amazing. The pecan is unreal. I don't like fruit based flavors but their strawberry and cream flavor was dreamy (note there is also a strawberry and cheese flavor too). The mango one might convert me to a fruit based ice cream believer. The flavors are just so flavorful. It reminds me of that scene in Willy Wonka where the they are licking the wallpaper saying "the snozzberries taste just like snozzberries" :) The chocolate isn't very chocolatey though so if I need a chocolate fix, I'll go elsewhere but it's the mango! the cajeta! the pecan! on and on and on that keeps me coming back for more. read more

I've had about eight different items here and not one has disappointed. So many new and unusual ice cream flavors (tequila, coconut, bubblegum...) to sample and each has been bursting with flavor. My favorite at the moment is the fruit/yogurt bar, blending bananas, mangoes, etc.with a tasty, creamy, sweet yogurt. My friend had the Oreo bar which held huge chunks of Oreos AND nothing ever falls off the stick! Staff has been very helpful and accommodating. Definitely a thumbs up! read more

This is my first time here, and I just can't believe I haven't been here before! I can here after a strong recommendation from my niece. All I can say is yes please! And when can I come back? Today I had an arroz con leche Popsicle. Also ordered by our group: guava, mango chamoy, coconut, and mango Popsicles. But make no mistake, I'm getting the tequila ice cream next time! So just a little bit of background before I begin this review. I grew up in a city with top-notch Mexican food, and so I didn't know what to expect from a Mexican ice cream shop. This my new favorite ice cream place in town! They have a huge array of flavors available and not to mention exotic. Their ice cream is Mexican style which is basically like homemade ice cream. Their staff is really friendly and helpful. They will gladly let you sample of all their ice cream flavors. I had the coffee paleta, it was delicious! It had just the right amount of sweetness and coffee flavor. My wife had a small cup of strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Their scoops were so big her cup looked more like medium sized. Hers was delicious as well! It had so much cheesecake. I will be definitely coming back until I try all of their flavors. read more

Came in after dinner. The place had quite a few people in line so that is a good sign for me. There was a menu to the right to browse as you wait with all if the varieties listed in english and spanish. Very very unique flavors available! This was easily some of the best ice cream I have ever eaten. The staff were very friendly, the restaurant was clean (including the bathroom!!), and the decor was fun. There is a large variety of ice creams, fruit bars, and other treats. They will let you taste flavors before buying, but they were all delicious to me. My girlfriend lived 5 minutes from this place the last 6 months, and she had never even heard of it. However, the other night we felt like ice cream and thought we would check it out due to all the amazing Yelp reviews. It definitely didn't disappoint. I got two scoops for about $4.50, and it was a ton of ice cream! I had the Pecan, and the Oreo (since I was struggling too much to choose one of their other dozen super unique flavors). Both flavors were super rich, and absolutely delicious. The pecan flavor had nice full pecans dispersed throughout it, which was a great touch. My girlfriend had the coconut flavor, which had little coconut flakes in it and was very tasty. It definitely does not seem like you are in Madison in this shop, which was an additional nice element. The workers there were very friendly, allowing us to taste different flavors, and there was plenty of room for us to sit and enjoy! read more

They have SO many flavors of ice cream and all kinds of different treats to order! I had a small ice cream and it was fantastic! I sampled some different things and everything I tried was delicious! The horchata was AMAZING! I'll definitely be coming back here! Also my friend who is diabetic (type 1) can actually eat the ice cream here without her blood sugar levels getting messed up. Maybe that will be helpful to others, I don't know but she was excited about it and comes here regularly for that reason. She likes the coconut ice cream and the pistachio ice cream. WOW! La Michoacana is awesome! They folks there are very kind and patient as we tried the different flavors. Some of my favorite flavors there are the piñon (pine nut), pistachio, walnut and tamarind. Those flavors are all amazing. OK, now to the ice cream itself... the consistency and smoothness is great, wonderful and luscious. Also, it's not too sweet, which I think is important. Also, the price. Nondescript storefront in a nondescript strip mall on Odana Rd with seriously good ice cream at very reasonable prices. We stopped in on a recommendation from a friend and spent just under $13 for 4 cups of ice cream. We tried Gansito (a Mexican snack cake), Pine nut, Coconut and a version with a Mexican shortbread cookie mixed in, and they were all great. There was also a wide variety of sorbets and agua frescas, too, but what's really unique here is the popsicle cooler. They have around 20-30 flavors of homemade popsicles stacked in rows of colorful towers, everything from the super kiddie friendly stuff (bubble gum, chocolate, oreo) to the more interesting (pineapple with chile, cheese with blueberries, membrillo, tamarind, pine nut again). The ice cream from this place is very delicious! I bought 1 scoop of strawberry ice cream and 1 scoop of coconut ice cream for $6.10. Their scoops of ice are fairly big, it fills the plastic cup completely. The coconut ice cream wasn't as good as I expected because there was coconut strips in every bit and strips I mean ton of shredded coconut. Every bit is shredded coconut only. The strawberry was very yummy though. The only downside about this place is that everything was in Spanish so it was hard to understand how to order (only if its your first time like how it was for me). I stood by the ice creams (since they don't have a proper check out spot) for about 20 minutes because the workers were helping their fellow people only (Spanish speaking). I kinda felt out of place until the other customers left and I finally got helped from the worker. She was nice though asking me if I needed help deciding which size and flavors to get. She showed me how big the scoops were before I ordered. read more

This place is amazing for dessert! Their staff is super friendly and helpful. Everything I've tried so far has been top notch quality. Their most popular dessert, though, is probably the mangonada which I have not tried yet. I highly recommend their agua fresca, in particular, the strawberry flavor. So refreshing and light! I just tried the corn (off the cob) today and it is amazing, just the right amount of spice and texture. My fiancé got the nachos (not too adventurous today) and loved how much cheese there was--most places usually skimp on the cheese but not here.
