Wherever you see a La Michoacana shop, you know you're in for great ice cream. Everything is high quality and uses fresh ingredients. You'll have your choice of cones, smoothies, banana splits, or almost anything else you can think of. But La Michoacana Sonmex in Poway really stands out from the rest. It is more than just an ice cream store! It has snacks, fresh fruit, and a wide variety of fresh made lunch items. There are elotes, ceviche, tostadas, and and the sandwiches are all delicious! The bread is fresh and so are the fillings. My husband had a roast pork sandwich and I had a cheese sandwich. Next time, I'll try the tuna. To go with our sandwiches, we had a cucumber agua fresca, and I also had a cafe de olla. Everything was outstanding. As soon as we walked through the door, the owners, Guillermo and Maricela made us feel welcome and took special care of us, explaining the various options. And we were not the only customers in the store! But somehow, they took care of all of us while preparing the food at the same time. Tallk about multitasking! The ice cream was great taste-wise. Service could have been better. We ordered a a double scoop of ice cream and asked if he could put one of the scoops in another cup just to make it easier on us to share because we had our young kids. When we checked out, the gentleman charged us the price for two single scoops simply because they were in two separate cups. I wish that he had at least warned us prior to putting them in separate containers or at least gave us the courtesy of giving us a "warning". To add insult to injury, there were others who ordered single or double scoops and our scoop was so so small. They were served by the lady so I don't know of that makes a difference. I wish we had taken a picture of our sad scoops. Overall, we don't live close by but are in the area often enough. We might wait a few months before returning, this experience left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

This spot really surprised me! Upon walking in, everything on the menu looks SO GOOD. But it is quite expensive so I wasn't sure I wanted to order anything. We ended up trying the chamango type drink (its called something else here). I got 2 which came to about 19 bucks so thats pretty pricey. The lady handed us our cups and while it looked delicious, it didnt quite look like the photo. When I mentioned this to her I expected some push back like most places, but instead she was SO SWEET! She offered to add more of anything I needed like tajin or chamoy sauce, even gave me a small side of the sauce in a cup to take with us. I wasn't sure how itd taste because it looks like they pre-make and freeze the mango slush part, but when we left and I got a taste it was AMAZING! I mean so, so yummy and refreshing. The mango slush was sweet and icy, the toppings were plentiful and had the perfect blend of sour and spicy. My kids devoured theirs. This was probably the best one I've tried, she even gave me a small discount when she noticed I was skeptical at the size of it, as I ordered a large but the cups are quite small. Shockingly its enough though. To me a business is made by its customer service, you can have an amazing product and rude staff and it kills the business. But this woman made all the difference, her kindness and willingness to help made me want to keep coming back. Plus the drink was amazing. I definitely recommend this place and I hope they see this so she is rewarded somehow for being such an awesome person and showing what good customer service is because she is solely what made me want to return. read more

So happy to have this new ice cream shop in the Poway area! We came on grand opening day and returned again. Friendly service, great flavors. The cereales flavor is one of my favorites. Think of it as a fruity pebble flavor. We came in with 11 people and almost everyone got it. I recommend the rocky road as well. Great chocolate flavor, and the marshmallows were SO soft. Good amount of seating inside as well as some chairs outside. They do samples to make sure you get your perfect flavor! read more

Good but inconsistent. The ice cream is over churned as it has a lot of ice crystals and the raspados are always different although I've ordered the same thing every time. I've visited about 5/6 times and each time the raspado is slightly different in taste and texture. Sometimes more ice, most of the time it's more syrup than ice and their syrup is tasty; not too sweet, and taste home made and that's really what keeps me coming back. The bubulubu ice cream is yummy just over churned and somehow always melty. I hope with time they can work out some of the kinks because I truly enjoy the flavors and service here. I have traveled all over the world and eaten at the best restaurants. I can tell you that this is as close to the food in Cancun and Cozumel as it can get. The aguas frescas, Coco Loco, and the pierna torta are the best I have ever had. The food quality and ingredients are amazing. The cucumber and taro agua Fresca are a must try.
