Me and my boyfriend ordered from DoorDash, hoping to get good burritos as Mexican food in the area usually does not let down. However, our 2 carne asada burritos were probably the driest, least flavorful burritos we have gotten in the Bay Area. We were looking for a late night meal and everything in Emeryville was closed henceforth we ended up in Berkeley at La Mission. They have their own parking lot and are open till like midnight so that's amazing. We ended up getting the pozole and chicken soup because it was late and rainy and both were good choices. The chicken soup was flavorful and hearty but next time I will get it without the tortilla strips because they make the broth soggy. This place has great food. The menu is huge, and reasonably priced. Their breakfast burritos are on point! The food is mixed traditional, authentic Mexican food as well as MexicanAmerican food (burritos, nachos). Everybody here is pretty friendly, and I think just about everything they make is made from scratch. While you can get your food to go, this is not a "fast-food" restaurant, really. It could be fun to sit down there also, there's lots of tables inside and outside. A majority of the food is fresh and made to order and comes out piping-hot off the grill. The best Mexican food in the Bay Area for sure. Do yourselves a favor and get the potato tacos and fish tacos. Beats most Mexican restaurants in Los Angeles as well (Yes, I'm an LA native and I am Mexican.) This was the place that made me fall in love with fish tacos. I've had many amazing fish tacos, but I still think this place makes the best. They are so flavorful, fresh, extra crispy and huuuge! This is one of my favourite spots in Berkeley when I'm craving Mexican (which is often enough). It also helps that It's located right on university ave., looking brightly lit and inviting, like a beacon of comfort. My boyfriend and I came here on New Year's Day and had a nice and cozy dinner. We got a burrito, some rice and beans, some veggie empanadas, and some Mexican chocolate cake to top it all off. We also got some delicious Serrano peppers and sauce which they always have on standby as part of the standard condiment offering. Although I had a difficult time finding vegetarian food in _actual_ Mexico, there's a lot more veggie friendly options in most Mexican places on this side of the border, including La Mission. The only thing to note is that they only have 6 or so tables indoors, so be prepared to sit outside where they have patio seating, or wait. All in all, 4 stars for tasty and sumptuous quantities food, cute ambiance, and an overall good vibe. read more

And huge pieces they forgot my guacamole on the burrito and my side of guacamole also they forgot my sour cream ‍ over all a epic fail on a night when it was totally empty for them to made as many mistakes is ridiculous. Delicious food, nice atmosphere - but today I'm giving 5 estrellas mostly due to service recovery from a mistake. Two of our three burritos by accident got prepared very spicy. Cashier intake probably misheard/misentered our request for mild salsa, and we didn't check the printed receipt until the food was delivered. While my co-diner could handle the high Scoville level, my first bite already proved way too much for my gringa tastebuds. So I reluctantly went back to the counter and explained the situation. The friendly staff person, Xavier, immediately apologized, took back my overspicy burrito and ordered a mild replacement at no charge (even though I offered to pay half). When I then ordered a sangria and some chips, he even threw in the latter on the house. The new burrito was delivered to our table quickly and was thoroughly enjoyable. This is by far my favorite taco place in the bay area! The grand tacos here has 2 shells (1 soft 1 hard) and has more fillings than normal tacos. I normally go for the beef and the fish taco while my husband will have these 2 and a pork one as well. The fish is always crispy outside and tender inside, with a light dressing to compliment the flavor. The beef taco doesn't skim on the beef quantity like a lot other places. We also like the nachos here. In fact it is the favorite dish for my mother who comes from China. The service is slightly slow here but that's because they make everything fresh. This probably means that the clientele is inexperienced, and thus these delicacies will go unordered. This probably also means that the meats that are on the menu aren't going to be that awesome because the aforementioned inexperienced clientele will not demand quality. 2 S T A R S * STEAK'ED THEIR CLAIM :::: Carne Asada Taco -- PURDY GOOD. I'm giving the chicken quesadilla five stars. I haven't had one like this in probably close to 20 years. There used to be a place where I grew up that made them like this and in the early 2000s a place in the mission. This is quesadilla suisa style. The taste and texture of the meat on point. But most importantly the cheese and crisp of the tortilla. Nothing grosses me out more than a huge quesadilla filled with mozzarella cheese and a tortilla heated so poorly it's soggy in several places. This one was crispy, buttery. Cheese melts delicately not gloppy. I wish I could go back for a carnitas one but it's a drive for me. The guacamole taste like something someone in my family would have made, It was chunky, had onions, lots of lime. Pico de gallo didn't appear to have any jalapeño but that's pretty common. Chips were interesting, seasoned with maybe Chile powder. I enjoyed the thickness of them. read more

I have heard good things about this restaurant and was a little disappointed. I ordered menudo for takeout, the service was fast and friendly. When I got to my hotel room I opened the bag and found no utensils to eat my food with. That's not a huge deal, but very inconvenient. When I opened the bag I saw the container of soup and was pleasantly surprised by the size, but not the contents. There was hardly any meat in the container, mostly broth! What was once a Taco Hell is now mole enchilada heaven, platanos paradise, and a fish taco dream! You don't have to be an expert on Mexican cuisine to know this place is superior. Not only do they have an epic menu of all my favorites, but the interior is really pleasant with rustic wood tables, orange-infused water, and the friendliest servers who tell you to "Enjoy!" every time they bring a plate to your table. We love it here. We tried the fish tacos (available fried or grilled), the mole enchiladas (available sweet or spicy) and the fried plantains (a special item, listed near the register, not on the menu board). Portions are huge, flavor is super fresh. All incredible, all for $24! Now that's what I call a pre-wedding-economizing date night. This is one of my favorite taquerias in Berkeley! During COVID they still have their outdoor patio open for outdoor diners or of course easy to-go as well! They also have a small parking lot in the back which is super convenient, especially for the area. I love their flavorful burritos, and they have pretty large tacos! Both have a wide array of different meat options including delicious fish tacos! Try the lamb barbacoa if you're looking for a flavorful stewed meat option, though it can be a little bit wet. My absolute favorite burrito here is the pork "chicharrón". I was confused at first since to me chicharrón is fried pork skin, but I think they are using the term loosely and really it's just extra crispy carnitas, which is my favorite kind of carnitas! It adds a great crispy texture to a burrito! They also give three options of salsa for the burritos; pico, green and red, listed hear in ascending order of spiciness, with the red being quite spicy! I like a mix of a little red and extra green, so I always make sure I ask for extra salsa even though they put some salsa in the burrito. read more

The burritos here are great. Unquestionably vastly superior to the burritos put together at those assembly line fast casual restaurants sprouting up everywhere. But then, by chance, or perhaps destiny, I got to try the Mole at La Mission. & it was a game changer. Specifically, it was Enchiladas with Mole Poblano. Wow. Whenever I've had Mole before, I've liked it. But not enough to think about choosing it above all other options, which happens to be the case now with ordering at La Mission. Apparently, I could get a Mole Burrito which would be a combination of my usual go-to & my new found love. But that sounds like it would be a hot mess. Who am I kidding? I decided to try this mexican place in Berkeley based on all the great reviews and comments on Authenticity. Needless to say, I was disappointed with my overall experience here. I came here right before the lunch rush so I was able to avoid the long lines. The indoor seating is very tight and the seats are arranged in a row of table along the wall. It's difficult for those sitting facing the wall to be comfortable because that space is the same space shared by those waiting in line. The tables look solid, but the one at sat at was pretty wobbly. There is however, plenty of outdoor seating, relatively speaking. The bathrooms are outdoors around the corner, and you need a key to get in. I ordered a carnita burrito with mild salsa, black beans, and cheese (+25 cents) fajita style (35 cents for added veggies and onions). Needless to say, I was disappointed at the quality and portion of my burrito. The tortilla wasn't moist and fluid, but rather dry and chalky. The carnitas itself was actually okay, but a bit dry for me. The veggies were decent, and the tomatoes were pretty fresh. The burrito wasn't that large either, though for the price of $8.23 (with tax) it was just okay. I'd rather go down to los moles though. They also do not serve free chips/salsa like a lot of mexican eateries. Chips/salsa is ~$2.80 to get on its own. Los moles, tacqueria, dos, guads all serve free chips/salsa so this is another cripe for me. Overall, not the most pleasant lunch dining experience. Their other non-burrito items may be good and I hope much better than their burritos. No free chips/salsa . If you come with a large group, prepared to sit outside comfortably or indoors uncomfortably. read more
