The food came out promptly and we really didn't have to wait at all. I can't say anything about the service since you order at a counter and bring a number back to your table, and bus your own dishes. There is plenty of outdoor seating so it is great to sit outside on a nice sunny day. I ordered the Baja fish tacos and unfortunately the batter was not fully cooked. Not to mention the fish had way too much breading, making it not taste very great (look at the photo). I basically picked apart most of the breading and ate the fish inside. A little disappointed but all my friends said their dishes were good, so I'd like give it another chance next time. But honestly for $8/taco, I wish it was better.

I ordered the pozole since it was the first dish that came up when I looked at the Yelp recommendations for La Mission. As someone who eats pozole regularly, this one didn't really stand out. The broth was a bit thicker than I prefer, and there were only about 4-5 pieces of meat in the bowl, so it felt like roughly 80% of the soup was maíz (corn)

Went to La Mission last weekend off a recommendation from a friend. We came on a Saturday afternoon, and it was nice out so we were able to snag a seat in their outdoor patio. It was our first time so naturally I had to go with a steak super burrito and a couple of fish tacos. the steak super with all the fixings came out to $20 and the two fish tacos came out to $14.50 before tax and tip. I was a little taken aback by the price of the tacos, until I saw them. They came with a huge piece of fried fish on each of them, topped with the fixings. We went with the staff recommendation with mayo and a flour tortilla. Easily one of the best fried fish tacos I've had in the bay. The burrito was just alright though. Didn't really find much of a stand out flavor and wish I would've asked for it grilled. Solid burrito if that's what you're craving but next time around I'm sticking with the fish tacos.

Cute local Mexican spot with limited inside seating and a patio with fairy lights. Food was decent. The chips are thick and crunchy and pair well with the refreshing pico de gallo and creamy guacamole. The baja fish taco is quite large. It comes with grilled cod, black beans, avocado, and pico de gallo but tasted slightly bland. I found the carnitas taco de plaza to be much more flavorful.

I've been to this place before and the food was pretty good, but I didn't take any pics the last time so I had to come back. We ordered the steak tacos and the chicken mole enchilada. We sat down and waited for our food to come and it didn't take too much longer before we received our food. The tacos had some good flavor and was cooked perfect. The enchiladas Mole flavor was not bad, but my chicken was overcooked, and the shell was hard. Overall the food was luke warm. I'll come back and try something else to see if the food can be better.

Very friendly cashier! Cute little patio. There was quite a few people on the patio. Just a couple chairs inside. The mole flauta taquitos were ok - kinda sweet and there was an over powering spice I there. I LOVED the plátanos tropicales. Honestly that would have been plenty for a meal on its own. Those black beans were spicy and paired well with the sweetness of the plantain. Very tasty and refreshing agua fresca. Such a delicious treasure of a restaurant on University Avenue.

===TL;DR=== - Pozole - Chipotle chicken sandwich ===TMI=== Let me telllllllll you. If you're around the area and you're craving pozole? Search no further. Their pozole here is bomb dot com with a generous proportion! I recommend to share or you get 2 in 1. Eat some there and take home the rest cause it gets better the next day. The chipotle chicken sandwich was also fire. The telera roll is perfection, warm and crunchy on the outside and pillow soft as you bite down. The sandwich gets so stuffed, get ready to have sauces oozing out. Oh also don't sleep on their red and green sauces near the counter, they're addicting with your food or your chips! Cute & small interior but large outdoor patio outside surrounded by large umbrellas and greens. Honorable mention, their burrito was bomb also. Literally anything on their menu is a hit.

Quick take: the portion sizes and staff are their best selling points. My wife enjoyed their Baja fish tacos. Nicely fried and huge too! My wife couldn't finish both so I ended up with more food than intended lol. I'll need to try their burrito again before I give my opinion. The chicharron was crispy but felt a bit too dry. The horchata wasn't the typical flavor or appearance I'm used to either. Kinda tasted a bit like chocolate milk. Not my thing but hey it's still hit the spot. Didn't get to sit inside due to limited seating. They have a lot of tables and benches outside. Dress warmly!

Ordered some takeout from this place and wasn't disappointed! The portion sizes were surprisingly big and the food was very filling. It's usually pretty hard finding food in Berkeley that is filling for $15-20 but the food pricing here is reasonably tame. I loved the variety of food on the menu as well, it was my first time trying out the mole burritos and i really liked them! The food tastes good and isn't too salty or too sweet just perfect :) The food was done very quickly in about 10-15 minutes and everything was packaged nicely for takeout :) I really loved this place and would love to order from here again in the future :)! It's important to note, it is on one of the busier streets in Berkeley so traffic may be busy!

Came here for lunch on a Sunday around 1:30pm! Found parking in the small lot attached to the restaurant. They don't take reservations, but we were able to get seating with our party of 10 . There is some indoor seating and then there is a cute patio outside with some tables. Veggie burrito (3.5/5): Hefty burrito! I added the mix-ins (sour cream, guacamole, cheese), each for an additional charge, but I wish they came with the veggie burrito by default. The fillings weren't layered evenly - half of the burrito had all the refried beans and rice, and the other half had everything else. But good flavors overall! Desserts (5/5): Was not expecting the desserts to be so good! Chocolate flan and strawberry tres leches were delicious - small but very tasty. Overall, the burrito fillings could have been layered more evenly, but the desserts were great! I would come back to La Mission for the desserts.

I found a hidden gem for me at least. I wanted to go to La Taqueria in SF for its famous mission style carne asada burrito no rice, huge. Traffic was a mess and it was a rare March heatwave so I decided to try something I saw while driving by downtown college area Berkeley. I saw place called La Mission. It looked very simple yet hidden because OPEN sign wasn't in or not working. Driving by side you can't tell there is an ample car parking lot which was all empty and there were no signs that prohibited parking. It was early for lunch around 11 am so happy they did have a breakfast menu until 2 pm but I wanted a burrito with a level of good spicy ness and orders mar and Tierra surf and turf without any additions like sour cream or salsa. The ingredients were very high quality. The steak wasn't chewy and the shrimp were cooked with best seasoning resulting in an amazing burst of flavor this is real Mexican food. Most of the patrons eat outside with lots of shaded tables. Service is wonderful and this is a family run spot. They have complimentary Lemon water too. I'm gonna keep it real this was one of the best tasting burritos I've ever had in a while . 5/5 I'll def be back.

I bought a fish taco today, but a majority of the "fish taco" was all batter only a tiny fish that was inside, but a majority of it was only fried batter and I'm very disappointed in that I also will not be eating this straight to the trash

I was curious to try La Mission with my friend for dinner, and we were satisfied with our experience! The place is super homey, with a nice outdoor area, back parking, and lots of flowers. We ordered at the front, and my server helped me a lot through my order. I wanted to try a mole burrito for the first time, and he recommended me adjustments to make all the items complement each other. Our order was given not soon after, and the burritos were great! It was a standard burrito, with rice, beans, and meat. I feel it was not too special, but it was a great meal regardless!

This might be the best Mexican food in the bay!!! Hella good the taste is authentic clean and good not mad greasy like most other places first stop I had a wet chicken burrito and man was it delicious the enchilada sauce is super spicy but that's ok I live for the heat the chicken was flavorful although I'ma chicken tinga kinda gurl it's the rice and beans for me I always say this and I stand by it if You can eat the rice and beans by itself it's a Go! Food is yummy. Service great. The menu is really clear and detailed. Lots of vegetarian options. I actually had a hard time deciding. Only taking 1 star off because there isn't a lot of seating and the outside tables were dirty and had ants. read more

Best spot in Berkeley for Mexican food. My favorite is the baja fish taco, $5.50. I thought it was expensive for one taco but it is huge! They give a generous serving of fish, crema, cabbage, and tomatoes. I love the breading of the fish, giving a nice crispy texture with moist fish inside, and the crema makes for a great flavor combo. Delish! The horchata is really sweet, but becomes perfect when the ice melts. This place has got friendly staff, a great vibe, is clean, has outside garden seating, and also boasts a parking lot in the back to top it off (no Berkeley street parking necessary). read more

Im giving La Mission a low rating bc I'm disappointed at how much I paid for my carne asada nachos and the amount of meat and guacamole they had. I paid $12 for the nachos $5 to add guacamole and $7 to add steak. $24 total for some nachos that had more beans than the meat and guacamole I paid for. Barely any cheese and a bunch of chips. These nachos were not worth $24. I will not be going back here again. read more

We for a quick bite on our way home from the city. It was our first time there so I checked around in yelp to see what looked good so I got a couple Baja tacos after seeing some pictures. A couple massive fried fish tacos with chipotle, cabbage and Pico de Gallo. My wife got a al pastor burrito and my sister a couple hard tacos with carne asada. My wife got her burrito and took a couple bites and realized it wasn't hers so she sent it back. I waited for her food to come again before I ate so by the time I got to my second Baja taco it just became oily and cold that I didn't eat it ($6 each taco so that kind of sucked). Once my wife got the burrito she ordered she really enjoyed it and it was large enough for her to bring half home to eat for today. My sisters tacos were probably so if the bust crunchy tacos I have had. The tortilla fried in house and the meat was flavorful. I would probably order these in my next trip. read more

Service was sweet by one of the ladies I will say. The food wasn't amazing it was just very OK. Ordered the steak/ chicken burrito, meat was dry. The chips were good, salsas weak nothing special. Won't be back. Huge disappointment, guess I had to try it to know that. Maybe they have 4*s for other menu items. Plus at $15 it's pricey for nothing amazing. Much better places that are worth it read more

Service was efficient and friendly, but La Mission's chicken dishes leave everything to be desired. If you eat pork, they have your back (the pozole for example), but the chicken is literally tiny dry cubes of meat with no flavor. I spent 17$ and change on two street tacos a small salad and one beer. Seemed outrageously high relative to the quality and amount of food. Maybe the other tacos are just so much more delicious? If I were them I would pull all the cubed chicken off the menu. The green salad was good, though sparse. I liked that it had pepitas, cabbage shreds and a vinaigrette dressing. Not sure I would come back just for that though with so many other amazing Mexican places around the area. Sad because I really wanted to love this place! read more

It absolutely pains me to write this. La Mission has been my go to for over 8 years, working as a server in SF, commuting from the Bay to FF where I reside, getting off late, La Mission was my go to place for comfort. Something has DEFINITELY changed!! I know the pandemic hit us all hard but I was so disappointed in my food. My steak was literally crispy/crunchy/ burnt extremely unappetizing, I paid for pico del gio (mild salsa) none in my burrito and also no cheese either, the sour cream was WATERY, way too many beans and my tortilla was ripped. The foil was so cheap that it got into my food. I don't think I will be visiting again. The cookies completely bland. The red sauce was good still. I feel ripped off and we drove up to Berkeley to get us a top of the line burrito, but it was far from that, very mediocre especially for the price. The lettuce was whole and not shredded. A belated review from January 2017: Too bad--I love this place (they are so friendly, and it seems so clean), but this is now the second time I have gotten sick from chile relleno either there or Casa Latina (same owners). I asked around a little, and two neighbors said they've gotten sick eating there too (either from chile relleno or nachos). I did a little digging, and check out this published scientific paper--turns out chile relleno is an accident waiting to happen from a food poisoning standpoint: "A Mexican restaurant-associated outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis type 34 infections traced to a contaminated egg farm" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2809608/pdf/10355784.pdf (It's not about La Mission, but VERY interesting about the risks...) I did finally get to talk to the very sweet manager (finally went in in person, after multiple messages not returned), and he said they are going to look into making some changes in how they make and store their chile rellenos (which can, incidentally, cross-contaminate other dishes). I hope they do, because it's a real shame for such a neighborhood treasure to be making people sick. read more

Went here today so much fun. The Chalkyflahn (my personal fave) was out of this world !! I knew this was gonna be good due to its high status around the community, but honestly, to be honest, my associate and I embodied this culinary experience with the food we ingested better than anyone else. Considering my esteem, 3/5 a Yelp star review is in equivalence to a 5-star Michelin restaurant. Not only will I not be coming back but I won't ever speak of this place to anyone I meet. Found this place on Door dash, I've been craving some menudo but every other restaurant just hasn't fulfilled my childhood memories of a delicious authentic bowl of menudo. We finally decided to try this place out as friends of ours come here as regulars. We didn't realize that there is a parking lot in the back and that they have an outdoor patio. Because of my allergies to grains, I am limited to what I can eat. I was hoping to eat one of their dishes with mole, but they told me there's grains in the mole sauce? Or they seemed a little unsure. So I ended up getting a Santa Fe salad with steak, my child got the steak quesadilla, and my husband had the carnitas sandwich. Both of their dishes look pretty good and a pretty good size. Both of them were really happy with their dishes. My salad was huge. As I continue to eat it, I kept looking for some flavor in it. After a quarter in, I decided to go back and ask them for extra salad dressing. Omg! This is where the flavor was, and they totally forgot to put it on my salad. So that is the one star off, plus not being sure if they're really is grains in their mole. Hopefully I'll eventually be able to find out in the near future. Otherwise, the customer service was pretty good and we had to wait a while for our orders as I think we hit peak time, 6:15 p.m. on a Thursday night. read more

The chorizo and potato burrito with sour cream, guacamole, and hot salsa is one of the best burritos that I have ever met. Delicious. Plus a lovely patio to sit and enjoy the meal. Horchata is available and recommended. read more

First time here while visiting one of my favorite cities and the food was delicious. Chilaquiles were hardy and not a bunch of wet chips, the chorizo was plentiful and beans perfectly cooked. That red sauce really is spicy so don't try it if you don't like spicy. Loved the outdoor seating area and had an amazing conversation with some other guests. I will definitely come back and try more items on the menu. read more

I so wanted breakfast, My meeting ran late so I had to settle for the tacos. The grilled fish taco was good. The Tacos al pastor were ok. Not great although not bad. Tortillas are small although they make up for the amount of meat they put on. Salsa did not have much flavor. The staff was friendly and I will be back for the breakfast. read more

we got off our night shift and went here for breakfast. There was no wait time at all, the restaurant just opened for the day. we were first customers. restaurant was very clean. There was a breakfast menu and we could order from full menu. we also ordered pitcher of sangria - which was great. 4 star for food. felt like food was cooked quick, slightly undercooked. 5 star for service. Will def stop by here for more food read more

Food is absolutely delicious with good portions, fresh, made to order, and wow mind blowing! Mole Poblano ($15.40) - 5/5. carnitas mole made with chocolate, served with rice, beans, and tortillas. SO GOOD, ranked "best mole in 40 years" by magazines, and yes it sure was the best mole I've had. Sweet and spicy with rich flavors, nice succulent carnitas, paired well with 3 handmade flour tortilla, rice, and beans. Loved it! read more

THIS is what i want Mexican food to taste like! The food was delicious, authentic & made with love (you can see them preparing/cooking everything behind the register.) I had the Grande Grilled Tacos (Carnitas & Carne Asada) & the meat was cooked perfect, the guacamole/pico de gallo, delicious & the tortillas were perfectly crispy/crunchy. My wife had Quesadilla with lamb & it was both great tasting & plentiful. We topped it off with a piece of flan; sweet & creamy. The interior is clean & bright & they have outdoor tables, (in addition to take-out.) The staff was friendly & attentive & we were just thrilled! read more

I've come here several times and have had great experiences each time. Be it afternoon, evening, or night, this place has fantastic service and wonderful food. Tonight hubs and I had a beer each while waiting for our order (Santa Fe salad and chile rellenos). The total came to $36 and I tipped up to $42. Seating inside is 8 small-ish tables that seat 2/3 each (booth on the back). There is more seating outside. Even when lines get long, the food comes out fast and hot. The staff are extremely friendly. There's Tapatio and tobasco and other bottles hot sauces available if you dine in. read more

Not sure what the deal is today, lately it's been hit and miss.I like the food here, but I like the food at other places too. I asked for the table to be wiped down, 40 mins later still lot done. I get that it's busy, but you should also take care of your dine in people, instead of pumping out take out orders like crazy. I am sitting down, still waiting for my food, 45 mins later no carne asada plate in sight. The workers are nice, very. Nice. They just maybe need more staff? Who am I kidding tho I'll still come back... read more

This is definitely a top 3 Mexican restaurant in Berkeley for me. Crispy carnitas are by far my favorite protein to get at a Mexican restaurant which is why their chicharrón burrito really hits the spot for me. read more

It's your standard burrito. It is GOOD, but it is not very good and definitely not excellent to warrant 4 or 5 stars. Size is good, meat quantity is good. To get 4 stars ingredients should be spread evenly across the length of burrito. With this one, one side had all the great meat and last half was beans and rice overload. Cheese and sour cream was at the bottom none as I ate through it. 5 stars? Well try to at least char tortilla. $16..without tip. read more

This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in the East Bay. If you're looking for a traditional Mexican restaurant with authentic home cooked seasoning, this is your spot. Their dishes are no tex-mex/Americanized Mexican food. I have tried their burritos, pozole, torras, enchiladas and can honestly say that they have never disappointed with their flavors. Some of my favorites are their tortas de pollo adobado and their green Chile burritos. read more

Again, my no-fuss boyfriend said he didn't mind packing the food up, but I think if you spend $450 on a dinner they could at least offer to neatly pack the food to go. It's a chore that I want to leave at home, plus it can be messy. It annoyed me a lot that the money we spent didn't seem to be appreciated and we had to basically clean up our table at the end. I have lived next door to La Mission since it opened. I eat here several times a week, if not every day sometimes. Jube, who works at the counter is awesome! I love going in here because his counter service is perfect. The rest of the employees are also sweet as well, and I have never had bad service here. The menu can be a little confusing to decipher, so its not a bad idea to think of what you might like to have and ask for assistance locating it on the board. Tacos de plaza is a great cheap option, and all the burritos are fabulous. My favorite item is the pozole soup made with pork and hominy. It is to die for. It comes with chips, cabbage, radishes, and onions to add yourself. The rich red broth is delicious. I also love the tortilla soup, which is also exceptional. By far the best mexican soups since Mexico City and Oaxaca. The sopa azteca is also great but the broth looks more like chicken broth. All the ingredients are fresh and delicious. My mother is a caterer and is always in search of "clean food." This fits the bill and I enjoy taking her to La Mission. The chile rellenos are delicious, as are the tostadas. I adore the flan here, it is thick and smooth, unlike many flans elsewhere which are runny and chunky in the center. If you are ever wondering about this place, definitely check it out. What a disappointment. Customer was the worst today! This used to be my go to spot when I'm Berkeley but no more I came in for the menudo and asked if they put PATA in their menudo, female cashier went to ask kitchen and they said YES 15 minutes later my menudo comes out with no PATA! I asked the guy that brought it to me and he said that there's no pata and that cook had told him to tell me that's there's none and too bad Even he felt awkward saying it to me I came in myself and went to same female cashier and told her my menudo had no pata , and I could hear the cook(he she looking) making some smart comment about me. Then they tell her is in my soup, and i tell her that there is none , this back and forth goes on for a while. Then they said ok we'll beat you up some pata with an attitude that's when I say just refund my money. They ORDER me to go get my plate, I bring it in and as last touch of their kind customer service touch the red head waiter gets spoon and stirs my soup just to double check that my story was correct. My only regret about this place is that I didn't find it sooner. La Mission does the best burrito in Berkeley, bar none. It's a bit of a trek from the Cal campus, which means it doesn't have the mobs of students that you'll find at Chipotle on Telegraph or La Burrita on Durant. It's got a nice outdoor patio as well as some seating inside, and I've always been able to get a table. So far I've only tried the burritos but the menu is pretty diverse and it all looks good. The wait it a bit longer than most burrito joints, but hey, you can't rush art. On to the food...it's great. Good tortilla chips and salsas while you wait. My favorite burrito is the mole, either the pork or chicken, done spicy (it's not super spicy). It's much more flavorful than your generic Chipotle type deal and should definitely fill you up. As a regular consumer of burritos this is my go-to. read more

My lady-friend and I had a great experience here Friday night. She ordered fish tacos, I got pork with mole poblano. The dishes were great -- fish was tasty, lots of fresh greens and spices. The pork in the mole was juicy, and I was fishing around with my fork to clean up the last bits of the mole before we left. For your money, you're probably paying the same amount as Monte Cristo (owned by the same parent company as La Mission), but in my opinion the quality of the food is a lot better. The restaurant itself is a work in progress. There are a few benches and tables to sit on inside, but I could see it getting cramped quickly. Service is great, the guys working the counter were friendly and helpful. I'd definitely go back, and probably at the expense of Monte Cristo. read more

I ordered three al pastor tacos and a watermelon agua fresca, and everything was delicious. The tacos were packed with flavor -- super juicy, with little bits of pineapple mixed in that gave them the perfect sweetness. The green salsa had a nice limey kick that complemented the tacos really well. The watermelon agua fresca was refreshing and balanced out the richness and spice of the meal perfectly. I didn't find the tacos spicy at all, but I'm Mexican, so spice tolerance may vary. Overall, this is a great spot with a nice outdoor patio, friendly staff, and really flavorful food. Definitely some of the best al pastor tacos I've had in a long time. read more

I recently tried La Mission in Berkeley, and I have to say, it was a bit of a mixed experience. I ordered the carne asada burrito, which was just okay. For the price of $19, I expected a bit more flavor and substance. The carne asada itself lacked that signature charred taste that usually makes it stand out. That said, the staff was friendly and welcoming, which made the dining experience pleasant overall. The outdoor seating was spacious and comfortable, a great spot to enjoy the sunny weather while eating. It's a decent place to grab a quick bite, but with so many options around, I might explore elsewhere next time. read more

I recently dined at La Mission and overall had a pleasant experience. The food was delicious, however, the pozole was disappointingly spicy and tasted somewhat watered down. On the positive side, the staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, enhancing our dining experience. The outdoor seating area was also beautifully set up, providing a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy our meal. Despite the minor issue with the pozole, I would recommend La Mission for its tasty food, great service, and lovely outdoor ambiance. read more

Good food, sexy staff (sometimes, depending upon who is working) but a little higher priced than I would have expected. I lived nearby and while I didn't crave the food, I would get it when they were open late or I needed a fix. I do remember being given a free horchata sample when I first arrived, and that was nice! I heard this place was great mexican, but I was greatly disappointed. The chicken mole had too much chocolate. For dinner, serously? I could have added milk, blended, and had a bodybuilder shake. The price was on the higher end. Besides parking and the whole experience I would recommend spending your money elsewhere. There are plenty of good restaurants and taco trucks in the neighborhood. read more

Great food, speedy service. Never had to wait for my take-out order! They have awesome options for mole - especially vegetarian mole burritos, which are hard to find. TBH, I haven't tried much off the menu here other than a few specialty burritos, like mole, chile colorado, and chile rellenos. Easy to get to, nice patio dining, and usually parking nearby. read more

I stumbled across this place when I was near the post office. The prices are reasonable, and I loved my burrito order. It had a large portion and very tasty. I'd definitely go back when I'm near the area. However, I am giving 3 stars because the place was a little dirty when I was eating there. It's not the best place in Playa but it delivers. i got A nice meal for a good price as the title reads, you could get a 3 course meal for an accessible price.The quality of food is ok, so if you are looking for a home made type of restaurant this one is a great option. Once you walk in, order, and receive your food, it becomes clear that this place is one of the best Mexican spots in Berkeley. Everyone who works here is super friendly, which is a huge bonus on already great food. The burritos are packed with flavor, and the chips are absolutely perfect. I have been coming here for years. Usually the service is good. Started from after COVID, prices going up very fast. The day before yesterday, the watermelon aqua fresca was good and it was $4, yesterday it suddenly become $5 out of the blue. Today I come in it's $5 but they add so much water in it. Good place with nice atmosphere where you can relax and forget all your problems. If you want to try something sspecial - come here! The Chef is so hardworking. I'm in love with their food!
