Puerto Sagua has been serving Miami Beach since 1968, and it is still standing strong, serving incredible Cuban food with so much character and history. I was given a menu then an excessive about of time to review it. Place my oder and didn't see my server again until 20 minutes after I was done. A food runner brought the food and I had to flag down another server to get me more water. I asked my server for the desert menu. She was prompt in getting it to me but disappeared (not really, she had plenty of time for all the tables around me and was able to ignore me when I tried to get her attention). By the time she showed up to get my desert order I just asked for the check. I was rather pissed. I got the check and paid it, adding a 30% tip. It wasn't until I got the final print out that I discovered that the restaurant had already added a 20 gratuity. Since I had issues with my server, and the surprise automatic gratuity was not helping matters i asked for the manger. Told him about my experience and said there was NO the server earned and 50% tip. He refunded me the extra I put on as an added gratuity, but that was it. The food was good, but was so very salty I couldn't eat the entire entree (pork, rice, beans). The beans were good. The rice good. The prok goo to a point. Oh, they have also changed their name. With all the restaurants on the strip, try some where else. The service here is a problem and the salt ia enough to clog an artery.

I was so excited for flan, which I love, but I felt the texture was softer and more like pudding in my mouth than the firm custard texture I want. Also overall really expensive but I guess it's an expensive area? There were 6 of us with over $500 total and that felt like a lot.

The waiter seemed visibly annoyed when I asked for a few minutes to decide on our order, and despite my polite insistence, he rolled his eyes and walked away. When our food finally arrived, it looked stunning on the plate, but unfortunately, the taste didn't match the presentation. My salmon tartare was bland, so I had to resort to adding soy sauce to give it some flavor, effectively turning it into a makeshift sushi. To add insult to injury, the waitress kept bringing us bottles of water we never requested, each costing a shocking $10! It felt like a deliberate attempt to inflate the bill. I need my braised pork to have a little char, little crispy fatty edges, and a salty/mojo finish. Lechon was cooked to a very moist tender and good consistency just not how I like it. AND they are my stars so I will do what I want! 3) Accoutrements were done well (White Rice, Black Beans, and charred plantains). No complaints here. Good start but the 1 note Lechon Asádo hurt me!

They unfortunately didn't have the Palomilla that I usually order so I had to order something different. I ended up ordering their Vaca Frita. My wife went with her usual Ropa Vieja. Overall the service was great. The food came out in a decent time. We also ordered drinks which did take a little longer than I would have wanted. My wife ordered their mojito and I went with their Miami Vice drink. My wife's Ropa Vieja was delicious. It came with white rice and maduros. My Vaca Frita was delicious. I ordered mine with arroz congri and maduros. The Vaca Frita came topped with grilled onions and was so flavorful. I usually order a Palomilla but going forward might have to alternate between the two. I can definitely see myself returning here.

We also had spirit-free drinks, which were also good. Our server, Chris, was pleasant and accommodating without being overbearing, which we appreciated. The establishment was clean, and the ambiance was cool. Unfortunately, the overall experience was affected by the energy we encountered from a couple of staff members. The host who greeted and seated us came across as particularly cold. She also made a comment to someone that my husband could not hear, but the tone and energy of the interaction made us uncomfortable. Shortly afterward, another server approached us asking if we had been helped. When I explained that we had just arrived, his expression and demeanor also struck me as somewhat dismissive. Thankfully, Chris came over shortly after, and the energy immediately shifted. I can't speak to anyone's personal beliefs or intentions, and I don't want to assume what was behind these interactions. However, as a Black woman and an educator, I am very aware of how race, perception, and social identity can influence interactions between strangers. Unfortunately, I left feeling as though we were being viewed or treated differently, and that made it difficult to enjoy the experience fully. It was clear they were the Votaré por Donald Trump, type. To speak plain, self hating LatinX people who hold prejudice over other people of color. Plain ignorant and miserable haciendo sus trabajos modestos! It's also worth noting that the host's political expression was very apparent, which I found particularly interesting given that she was the first person guests encounter. Whatever someone's political beliefs may be, I believe that anyone working in a customer-facing role should make every guest feel welcomed and respected. Overall, the food was good, Chris was wonderful, and the space itself was nice. But hospitality is about more than food and decor; it is also about how people feel when they walk through the door. I hope the owners take that part of the guest experience seriously, because no restaurant benefits when customers leave feeling unwelcome.

After looking at the reviews I presented Mareva 1939 as my top choice. I contacted them and made a reservation for 10 people, and after the first reservation time I had to adjust with Mareva for people arriving in late because of flights. No problem for Mareva and they didn't need a deposit for the restaurant. It is in the National Hotel, next to where we are staying box 1 check. The place was beautifully decorated and staff all attentive throughout the night. That was my criteria not my boss' since the lack of good service can destroy a great meal. The food choices all were excellent but centered on tapas and Spanish cuisine which checked the second box. Served family style we all chose a number of different tapas and shared. Then large patella dishes, they were plentiful and all delicious. Lastly the price, which may seem high for those outside the area but not for those who know Miami Beach. The bill for the 10 of us that included several drinks person and enough food and desserts to leave us full came to $1,002 including tip and taxes. All boxes checked and my boss and team happy, Mareva 1939 was a huge success.
