Great Mexican restaurant in south beach! I went in with two friends on a Sunday night and they weren't too crowded. I ordered the watermelon jalapeño marg, which was just okay imo, but I will admit I am picky with watermelon drinks. To eat, we split a chips and guacamole and I got the veggie fajitas. We enjoyed eating at this restaurant, which was just a few steps away from our hotel. Right on the south beach strip this well decorated restaurant was very visually pleasing. Please see photos below. Upon entering the restaurant, we were pleasantly greeted by the host that quickly seated us. We did have a reservation and definitely glad we made one. After being seated, the restaurant started filling up very quickly. Once the live music started, the place was packed. Our server was very friendly and he made some great recommendations. I opted for the chili rub Carne Asada steak medium rare. My husband went for the Birria tacos. We started our meal off with chips, salsa and guacamole. Being from the South West we were used to spicy Salsa. Although the salsas weren't very spicy, they had good flavor. My Carne Asada was cooked perfectly and the flavor was a touched smoky and the seasoning was absolutely delicious! My husband's Birria tacos were very good too. Delicious shredded meat inside the corn tortilla with cheese served with a consume that was delicious all on its own. The food was very good and the ambience was spectacular. Came here for some after dinner drinks and this place was full of life! Obsessed with the bar seating that connects inside and outside so you can sit outside and people watch and enjoy the Miami warmth or sit in the same bar inside and people watch as you have a good time. We ordered the Mezcal Negroni and Guava-Habanerox. LOVED the blend of the guava and spicy habanero. I had mine tweaked to be a bit more spicy - it was perfect! For all the years, or in my case decades I have been hitting up Miami I have passed by Azteca many times but had never went in. However, my most recent visit to Miami back in October I finally went. Had a Pina Colada which was fairly good, (coulda used a bit more rum though) but still enjoyed it nonetheless. The service here is pretty good and dope vibe with the heart of South Beach. Really nice ambiance! Love the greenery and cherry blossom tree on the inside of the restaurant. The bar set up with the bar stools on the side street looks cool and makes for such a vibe in the evenings. Chips and guac were a hit, so were the shrimp fajitas. For the food lots of options. We went with the taco trio and the birria quesadilla. The prices were well prices all within 18-26$ for those options. The taco trio, you get to pick 3 tacos, which is a great option if you want to try many kinds. The normal tacos come with 2. But all taco entree (meal) come with rice and beans with pica de gallo. The hostess did recommend any thing with birria is delicious and he was not wrong. That birria quesodilla was one of the best ones I ever had. Everything was freshly made and you can taste all the freshness. The quesodilla does come with guacamole, Pico and sour cream. I did ask for a hot salsa sauce, which was a additional 2$ but it was definitely the spicy hotsauce I was looking for, well worth it if you like spice. They did have regular hot sauce for free. My only two complaints: he didn't even ask what my flavor profile was; I actually would've preferred something smoky and sweet. The mango margarita was good, though. Other Complaint: we had been chatting, and both servers knew I was a tourist visiting in from out of town. When the bill came, it was a bit higher than expected, but I figured it was due to a tourist tax of some kind. The meat was tasty, the black beans also, but the rice was not in the least close to being real Mexican style rice. It's not clear if it's gratuity or what. It's always awkward asking your server. I'd prefer it clearly say gratuity or "gratuity not included". We passed by Azteca during Basel and thought it looked just fantastic! The indoor / outdoor bar area, the wall of tequila, the mural inside and all of the (fake) foliage looked so amazing and inviting. We were in the area during Memorial Day weekend and decided to stop by for a drink. We snagged seats at the outdoor bar so we could soak in all of the busy street activity! We started with the classic margarita and the spicy avocado margarita. Both were expertly mixed and not overly sweet. The avocado margarita had actual avocado in it and a really nice bite. We then ordered tuna tostadas, which was a lot of fun to say after a round of margaritas! Delicious, fresh and reminiscent of the tuna nachos at the dearly departed Yard House. Next up was another round of drinks. We had the mezcal negroni and the cucumber margarita. I was a little wary about the cucumber margarita as it was made with mezcal instead of tequila, but the mezcal they used was very mild and added a beautiful, smoky tang to the drink. Delicious! This was the first time I've felt subject to age discrimination. We wanted to go to the rooftop bar, but the hostess said we couldn't because of the rain. We saw umbrellas on the roof from the street, but she said they didn't have any, and she sat us inside, right next to the door. The drinks were okay. The live band was nice, but it was too loud where we were seated. The waiter overlooked me taking orders, and asked everyone but me if I wanted another drink. All the while, we watched as another host would take younger women upstairs, we presume to the rooftop bar. And just like every other place we patronized in South Beach, they slapped us with a 20% service charge. 20% for shitty service and possible age discrimination. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. I would give them one star, but the drinks were good, so they get one more star. But I'll never go back. The lighting is very warm with pinks, reds, greens. The dining area is very chic with rounded powder pink sofas and green cushion chairs. They had a live band playing, which was really nice. The host was really pleasant and immediately greeted us as soon as we walked up. Our server was equally as nice and attentive. He had a great attitude and was accommodating. I ordered the bbq mushroom tacos and shrimp tacos as a meal. It came with black beans and rice. The bbq mushroom tacos didn't have an overwhelming bbq flavor as you'd suspect, but they were also topped with green onion which I think added to the flavor. The shrimp tacos were very lightly breaded with a yellow sauce atop. Everything was so good and filling. EAT sleep rave repeat! I came here with my friends Ericka and Dawn after attending a nearby Miami music show for a little bit of sustenance. There are a few dishes like a good plate of Mexican food after dancing and drinking so here we are. Azteca is located on the corner of 11th and Washington so it was super convenient from our venue. Both the ventanita bar as well as the inside dining were packed with fellow partiers. Given the size of the crowd, our service is actually pretty good. Do note they have automatic gratuity and charge for stuff that used to be compliment such as extra sauces and chips & salsa. They also have a roving photographer that goes on the tables, takes and print pictures and then tries to sell it to you with a frame. The Brugal mojito I ordered was a pretty decent nightcap, if maybe a bit too sweet. I did love the chips and salsa for the table. The chips had a nice crisp to them; both the red and green salsas were good. My chicken burrito was a nice size, well packed with feelings and a pretty good amount of chicken. I like that they did customize the guacamole out as requested, and sharing the extra hot sauce that my friend requested made it that much better. All in all, with the live music, the drinks and Tex Mex Classics, Azteca is definitely a nice place to stop for a South Beach dinner. read more
