What's in there? What's up with that name? Yes, it's open - and very late! Inside, you will find a wide variety of cocktails and a smoky coolness waiting. And the name? Dang! - I forgot to ask. Homework for my next visit. Following an early dinner, the lady and I enjoyed a couple of drinks around 8:30. We were the only ones in the place, which still felt cozy. Learned a lot about the group that owns this spot from our friendly bartenders. Drinks were good, the playlist matched the loungey vibe, and the prices were in line with what you'd expect (gratuity included). Overall, a nice early nightcap. We did pop our head in last year around 10:00 p.m., and the place was ramping up. I've no doubt it's a great scene the later you get.

So it's fair to say we had enough alcohol to call it a night, but this Mamey swizzle was so delicious I had to order another one. Years ago I'd come here after the beach, sit on the balcony, people-watch, and cool off with a strong, frozen drink. In that sense, the place is exactly as I remember, with cold drinks on a hot Miami day and a fun atmosphere. Unfortunately, the billing experience completely changed how I felt about our visit. When the check arrived, I noticed the suggested tip percentages were unusual (around 7%, 8%, and 9%). I was planning to leave my normal 20% tip, but then the gentleman behind the bar explained that a 15% gratuity had already been added and the listed percentages would be additional. To be clear: I always tip, and I generally tip well. But adding a gratuity without authorization or clearly disclosing it up front is a big deal. A tip is supposed to be voluntary, and quietly including one, especially in a setting where you're already prompted to add more, feels misleading and wildly inappropriate. That part honestly overshadowed the visit for me. The drinks and the memories are still there, but check your bill carefully before paying. I enjoyed the nostalgia, yet this practice alone makes me hesitant to return. This practice of discretely tipping themselves is borderline theft.

The waiter seemed visibly annoyed when I asked for a few minutes to decide on our order, and despite my polite insistence, he rolled his eyes and walked away. When our food finally arrived, it looked stunning on the plate, but unfortunately, the taste didn't match the presentation. To add insult to injury, the waitress kept bringing us bottles of water we never requested, each costing a shocking $10! It felt like a deliberate attempt to inflate the bill. They unfortunately didn't have the Palomilla that I usually order so I had to order something different. I ended up ordering their Vaca Frita. My wife went with her usual Ropa Vieja. Overall the service was great. The food came out in a decent time. We also ordered drinks which did take a little longer than I would have wanted. My wife ordered their mojito and I went with their Miami Vice drink. My wife's Ropa Vieja was delicious. It came with white rice and maduros. My Vaca Frita was delicious. I ordered mine with arroz congri and maduros. The Vaca Frita came topped with grilled onions and was so flavorful. I usually order a Palomilla but going forward might have to alternate between the two. I can definitely see myself returning here.

My husband had the oxtail with white rice, beans, and what I believe were plantains. He practically cleaned his plate and said he really enjoyed it, so that was a 10/10 from him. We also had spirit-free drinks, which were also good. Our server, Chris, was pleasant and accommodating without being overbearing, which we appreciated. The establishment was clean, and the ambiance was cool. Unfortunately, the overall experience was affected by the energy we encountered from a couple of staff members. The host who greeted and seated us came across as particularly cold. She also made a comment to someone that my husband could not hear, but the tone and energy of the interaction made us uncomfortable. Shortly afterward, another server approached us asking if we had been helped. When I explained that we had just arrived, his expression and demeanor also struck me as somewhat dismissive. Thankfully, Chris came over shortly after, and the energy immediately shifted. I can't speak to anyone's personal beliefs or intentions, and I don't want to assume what was behind these interactions. However, as a Black woman and an educator, I am very aware of how race, perception, and social identity can influence interactions between strangers. Unfortunately, I left feeling as though we were being viewed or treated differently, and that made it difficult to enjoy the experience fully. It was clear they were the Votaré por Donald Trump, type. To speak plain, self hating LatinX people who hold prejudice over other people of color. Plain ignorant and miserable haciendo sus trabajos modestos! It's also worth noting that the host's political expression was very apparent, which I found particularly interesting given that she was the first person guests encounter. Whatever someone's political beliefs may be, I believe that anyone working in a customer-facing role should make every guest feel welcomed and respected. Overall, the food was good, Chris was wonderful, and the space itself was nice. But hospitality is about more than food and decor; it is also about how people feel when they walk through the door. I hope the owners take that part of the guest experience seriously, because no restaurant benefits when customers leave feeling unwelcome.

After looking at the reviews I presented Mareva 1939 as my top choice. I contacted them and made a reservation for 10 people, and after the first reservation time I had to adjust with Mareva for people arriving in late because of flights. No problem for Mareva and they didn't need a deposit for the restaurant. It is in the National Hotel, next to where we are staying box 1 check. The place was beautifully decorated and staff all attentive throughout the night. That was my criteria not my boss' since the lack of good service can destroy a great meal. The food choices all were excellent but centered on tapas and Spanish cuisine which checked the second box. Served family style we all chose a number of different tapas and shared. Then large patella dishes, they were plentiful and all delicious. Lastly the price, which may seem high for those outside the area but not for those who know Miami Beach. The bill for the 10 of us that included several drinks person and enough food and desserts to leave us full came to $1,002 including tip and taxes. All boxes checked and my boss and team happy, Mareva 1939 was a huge success.
