My husband (black), and I (Latina) visited La Nonna for the first time on 02/13/25. I was excited to take my husband out on a date and visit a new restaurant. We enjoy supporting small local businesses and we were excited to dine here. When we walked in we were told to sit anywhere. Cool. Then we were given menus and water. Cool. Once we looked at the menu and made our choices we weren't sure if we were supposed to order at the counter or wait for the waiter because he took a while to come back to us. For context there were only 2 other tables that were occupied. First table already had their food, and the other had already ordered. Finally he came to our table. I ordered my food (in English), and then my husband asked one question before ordering. A very simple question: what kind of chicken is used in the chicken burger (breast, patty, dark and white, ground)? He said, what? My husband asked again and the waiter seemed confused. Without hesitating, I just asked the same question in Spanish and he was able to answer me immediately. My husband was a little annoyed and asked me if I thought he was treating him indifferently. I hadn't put much thought to it and I said no, he was probably just confused because of the question. He probably just couldn't translate it because of the language barrier. As the night went on two more tables were occupied and for context again they were Americans, as in white people. We noticed that the waiter had no problem speaking to them in English and answering all of their questions. My husband asked me, did you notice that he's speaking English to everyone else but every time he approaches our table, he only speaks to you and he only speaks in Spanish? He came back to our table and asked me ( in Spanish) if everything was OK and I said yes, but he never once looked at My husband and when he brought us the check again, he only addressed me and then handed me the check and only spoke in Spanish. At first, I didn't want to see what My husband was saying, but by the end of the night, it was a little too obvious. . My husband was being treated with prejudice. What was supposed to be a date night and early Valentine dinner turned out to be a very disheartening and disappointing experience. My husband asked me if I would ever go there again to try something else, and I said not a chance. I can't support an establishment that treats people differently because of their color, and for that I will never visit your establishment again. I'll give you 2 stars because the food was decent, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

This place is ADORABLE - the interior is amazing and it's currently decorated for Halloween which made it even better . The music is quiet (which is amazing because most places blast the music) and you're able to hold a conversation without screaming The staff is super friendly and accommodating . The food is nothing short of amazing . We tried each of the empanadas (all of which are worth getting) nice and crispy! We ordered the skillets for breakfast - there was an ample amount of food and none of us were able to finish. The skillet was great , seasoned perfectly and had an arrange of veggies. La Nonna is the definition of a hidden gem. It's tucked inside the homes and neighborhood of Avondale, but the food quality is so good, their food would hold up to restaurant row standards. The recipes are authentic Argentine style. The best thing on the menu is the veggie skillet, you can add steak if you want more protein but it's packed with eggs and different veggies and an incredible delicious broth with a side of toast. Highly recommend their coffee as well as their empanadas. I've had every flavor and you really can't go wrong. Don't forget to get a side of chimichurri theirs is the best. The servers are really sweet and quick. They have an adorable outdoor patio, too. Went to Chicago on a business trip, and I decided to try each night to go to a different Argentinian restaurant since I was born in Argentina. All went good till Wednesday night, when I went to La Nonna. I was the only one since it was 6 PM. Food was okay, but the problem arrived when I went to pay. My corporate card requires a pin to be put in when I pay for anything. The server wanted my pin and when I told him that I couldn't give him the pin since it was a company card, he got aggressive and kept asking for my pin. His solution was for me to get onto the counter top and try to reach the register to put my pin in. I think this unprofessional behavior is unacceptable. I would not recommend this place to anybody that expects quality service. La comida estaba ok el servivio fue malo, no se lo recomiendo a nadie. El empleado trato varias veces de que le provea el codigo pin de mi tarjeta de credito y cuando le dije que no esta bien que me lo pida me recomendo que me pare sobre la barra y trate de llegar al posnet por mis propios medios. I heard so many good things from friends and people on Yelp, so I was coming in with pretty high expectations. And honestly, they were exceeded! I'm going to walk you through my whole experience: Finding this place was a little hard because it's in a residential area and blends in with all the other houses around. It didn't really help that it was surrounded by narrow one way streets (which also makes parking a little difficult). Despite all this, I found a parking spot and got to the restaurant relatively quickly. My sisters and I were immediately seated. In line with the home-y exterior of this corner joint, the interior decorations make you feel at home. Pillows, benches, cute little light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, etc. Cozy stuff. The menu is relatively small, which is great. I don't usually need an extensive selection of options as long as the restaurant has a few things they can make really well. My group collectively got a crudo sandwich, the triple chicken sandwich, the chicken burger, and the steak sandwich. It took about 30 minutes between the time we sat down and when we actually got our food. And the wait was so worth it. The food blew my mind. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned and the sandwich was so crisp and flavorful and warm and good and wow. I tried everyone else's food and it was just as magical. Also, you MUST ask for the salsa. It is genuinely the best salsa I've ever had. And I've had a LOT of salsa. I don't say this statement lightly. The service was really great! I am so sad it took me this long to find La Nonna on yelp, as it is a little bit of a hike from my house. We went for lunch yesterday and split the Lomito and the Chicken Pesto panini and started with the cheese and ham empanadas. Wow! I now understand these positive reviews. Every dish was super flavorful and tasty, we left their stuffed. Their chimichurri was outstanding and slightly different from others that I have had, as it had more of a tang. I will definately be back to try some of the other menu items. I don't drink, but I am for sure bringing my next set of partying house guests who visit, here for brunch/lunch. The only downside is parking is very difficult - permit parking only everywhere nearby. But beyond that the food, the service the ambiance are all top notch! I had the Choripan Sandwich and it was amazing! The wife had the chicken vesuvio which she said was a bit on the salty side but still pretty good. For desert we had the flan and it did not disappoint...rich, creamy and sweet. All in all this was pretty decent. I got the caprese and the provolono, my boyfriend got the steak sandwich and the mashed potatoes. We also ordered the chicken empanada and were expecting a larger portion for the $4, but it was just one, and it was on the small side. The empanada itself was good, just wish it had been bigger! The caprese was good, the basil was dry but I feel like you can't expect it to be super fresh for carry out. The provolono was an interesting choice, basically cheese with red peppers and tomatoes mixed in. My boyfriend says the steak sandwich was average, he liked the chimichurri/oil they put on it. He was disappointed with the mashed potatoes, but I thought they weren't bad! He wanted them to be creamier and more garlicky. Finally, for dessert, I got the dulce de leche crepe and he got the tiramisu. The crepe was delicious! The tiramisu was just basic. All in all, middle of the road. Some friends and I went this weekend for brunch and were all so pleased with the price point and just loved the food. The recipes come from the chef's Argentine Grandma and his Italian mother-in-law, truly passed down with love. You can definitely feel some fusion mix in the dishes. La Nonna just opened last month in the 'hood and everyone is clearly enamored with this tucked away new spot. This past weekend, I had the Clasico Sandwich with papas rotas for $7.50. I can't even put into how words just how good this sandwich was. Ham, cheese and mayo on toasted crust-less bread honestly never tasted this good. I don't know what kind of magic they put into their food but goodness! I have been craving the sammy ever since I had it. The potatoes it came with were so flavorful, they needed no ketchup or even their house-made hot sauce. Everything I had was so incredibly tasty...it's left me dying to try more. Empanadas at La Nonna are better than 5411 (and better than my Argentinean Bro-In-Law's but shhh, don't tell him) and have cute branding for the restaurant right on them. They have 4 staple flavors- Beef, Chicken, Ham & Cheese and Veggie. I had the ham & cheese which was generously filled with good ingredients and a tasty shell. They also had a special empanada of the day- Caprese flavor. It was filled with cheese and tomatoes, open face, just fabulous flavor. The restaurant was very accommodating of the baby in our party which is always nice. The only negative is that food took ages to come out (a couple that came in after us was finished eating before we even got ours), but everything was so good, all was forgiven when we finally bit into it. I'm interested to see if the quality keeps up at this newly opened spot. Really loved the sleek look of this modern space - completely unexpected for a neighborhood spot. La Nonna is a hidden gem, but not for long! As soon as I walked in, I felt at home. The place is relaxed and the least bit stuffy. It seemed like a great place to grab a sandwich and read a book. I ordered the Chicken Triple ($9, chicken, cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo). Sounds simple, but tastes like a sandwich that was made with much love. It had great flavor and the bread tasted so good. I took the other half to go because it was so filling. Our server also said that the Cocido, Chicken Pesto, or Steak sandwich were popular... I think everything on the menu is popular here. What a great find. A local gem hidden away on a side street in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago. Jose the owner and chef can certainly cook as EVERYTHING we had was great. We had Pizza, caprese salad, empanadas, provoleta and a bunch of sides and everyone loved everything. Very cute place with great ambiance, inside and outdoor dining.
