I ordered chicken tacos with cilantro, onion and tomatoes. Not what I got.

Met the "bouncer" on the outside who was nice and I got convinced to go in after scanning the menu. First, getting service was slow but understandable. Karaoke was going on and sounded fun despite me only speaking English. I was having a very nice time. Staff were all very friendly. I ordered chicken tacos to go with cilantro and onion and tomatoes. I also ordered refried beans on the side. Now see the picture of what I got. No cilantro. No onions. No tomatoes. And no refried beans on the side. The bar was loud and I only speaking English, was absolutely convinced the bartender understood my order. I even triple checked (I'm not a controversial person - despite this review because I'm upset on how clear i felt my order was accurate at the time. And I only ordered chicken tacos with cilantro, onion and tomatoes). I even made sure that pico de gallo was different than just the tomatoes the bartender kept telling me. I would have accepted either. Yes I know what pico de gallo is but that bartender kept asking me if i wanted tomatoes or pico de gallo. Anyways, when I got back to my hotel room after trusting my experience there, I was very disappointed. I was only in PR for two days and this ruined my last night food experience. I do trust it's not systemic of my overall experience but was still a disappointment that I could have a prelim great experience and get fooled with the food. Note for future reference- don't take food to go without checking everything before leaving. Yes, I know it should be obvious. That is on me and one of the reasons for not a lower review.

Came here on a Sunday night - everything else around was closed - so it really was our only option. I believe it was around 11pm that we were walking around and were hungry after a long day in the sun! The spot was vibrant and served us great margaritas. My husband had a classic margarita and I tried the parcha margarita. (Parcha is passion fruit ) I wanted guava but they didn't have that flavor. Food wise, I wasn't amazed. My husband loved the Elote. For me, the flavor was great but the corn felt over cooked. I like more of a bite to my corn, and the kernels were shriveled. The montaditas were flavorful and were supposed to come with carne, pollo & Birria, but they were out of the Birria. We also ordered chips and guac. The guacamole was okay, but definitely not the best I've had. We sat at the bar and the service was quick, between us getting our drinks and our food hitting the table. Would recommend for tourists in the on in the surrounding area!

Chicken nachos, chicken chimichanga, pastor tacos, carnitas burrito

Food was great, mango margarita not good. Gata saleaje drink was good (like a spicy margarita). Only complaint was the service was very slow, food came in good time but after that the waitress was gone. A good hole in the wall place.

The service was not very good... the food and the vibes were great, however, I think they could use training when it comes to customer service. As our server brought out the remainder of our food, that we had to ask for 15 minutes after she brought only half of the tables food out, she accidentally tipped over my drink. Accidents happen but she did not bring a new drink over or even offer to remove it from the tab. Given that majority of the drink spilt, I would think that one of the above would've been done. Overall, she was not friendly.

Diego was our server! We recommend this restaurant food is good. Customers service is amazing. We came with a group of friends ( girls night out/ bday party)

Came for lunch to try again when not so so busy. Food was pretty good very filling. Service was way better than we had the other night. This lady was kind and attentive

Nefshaly was a great waitress! Attended our family with kindness and promptly. Food was great. Definitely coming back!

    Margarita flight and chips

Ambience was great! Latin music and karaoke Saturday night . Small bar, a few people left line because there was no space for seating. Waitresses are not that attentive and service was not the best. Did not really check in to see if more drinks or food wanted to be ordered.

Not sure what's up with the one stars, maybe some other food isn't as good idk but my birria tacos were pretty fire. Ngl I wasn't all there when we went, but all I know is it hit. They were our neighbors to our airBNB so we had to support, and the chefs are all super chill too. Overall good vibes fsfs

The vibe was great, the food was fresh and well made, and the service was friendly overall. A fun bonus: we actually got to see the famous rock band Maná dining there, which was such a cool surprise! We ordered quite a bit--the chips and queso, chips and guac, hot sauce, tamale, rice and beans, kids cheese quesadilla, and veggie fajitas. The kids' quesadilla was a huge hit with our 5-year-old (who is a picky eater and devoured it). The veggie fajitas were decent and tasty, though for the price I would have liked a bit more on the plate in terms of sides. There was a small hiccup where cilantro was accidentally added to one of my dishes, and it did take quite a while for the corrected dish to come out, but they were very kind about it. That said, everything else was enjoyable and the overall experience was still very good. Overall, a great spot for solid Mexican food in Old San Juan with a fun atmosphere and fresh flavors.

Duck Quesadillas: When I think of a duck quesadilla, I think of something that has a rich profile, but this was surprisingly humble. The duck, mushroom, and cheese all harmonized well to create a symphonic doughy pillow. Definitely recommend it. Grouper Fillet: I don't get the chance to eat Grouper often, but when I do it always hits. I can confidently say that my experience has continued. Despite the bed of sweet potatoes, you could still make out the distinct semi-sweet flavor of the fish. Also the creamy sauce paired perfectly with both the potatoes and fish. Of all the different restaurants I could've chosen, I think this was one of the best ones to end off my night in Old San Juan. Looking forward to coming back!

No one came over until we finally walked into the restaurant ourselves. Once seated, we were immediately rushed because the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes and the bar was already closed. The food was where things went completely off the rails. The steak was flavorless, unseasoned, and brutally tough. I needed a serrated steak knife and a full back-and-forth sawing motion, so long I honestly thought the restaurant might reopen the next day before I separated a bite. What finally came loose was a fibrous, nearly raw rope of meat that was simply not edible. We told the server plainly that the meat was not tender and had no flavor. He went behind the bar, where we could clearly see him talking to the chef, who could also clearly see us. A few minutes later, the server returned and said the chef was willing to offer 20% off the steak. I said I wasn't eating the steak. I wanted to pay my bill, but I asked that the chef come out and speak to me directly. Knowing where this was headed, I recorded the conversation. I asked the chef if he genuinely believed it was acceptable to send out a $40+ steak, then offer about $8 off for something that couldn't be eaten. His response: "Yes, the steak is good." I told him I couldn't cut through it with a serrated knife. He repeated: "The steak is good." Over and over. At that point, I told him he was an idiot. I paid the bill -- and only later noticed I wasn't even given the 20% discount that had been offered. I still tipped the server 20%, because this wasn't his fault. As I left, I told the chef I would never be back, that I would write a review, and encouraged him to learn what good food actually is. It's painfully obvious this business is not in a good spot. Serving food of that quality, refusing to remove it from the bill or remake it, and instead arguing with a customer tells you everything you need to know. That's not confidence -- that's financial stress. Don't expect this place to be around much longer. If they are somehow still around, they need to start by getting rid of the Napoleon-complex, man-bun chef with the bad attitude, tiny vocabulary, and an objectively inferior palate. Arrogance doesn't tenderize meat, and confidence doesn't replace seasoning, skill, or basic competence!

I asked if I could be seated in a different section of the restaurant, and even though they were packed, they said absolutely and found me a lovely seat in the bar area. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. I suffer from severe food allergies but wanted to experience their tasting menu. My server spoke to the chef directly and then took the time to walk me through every option. I TRULY appreciated that they did not take anything off the menu but rather told me how they could adjust for my allergies. That is very rare and so very much appreciated that they went that extra mile for me. I highly recommend the tasting menu. It's 5 courses and they give you 3 options to choose from, within each course. And for the price ($85), a great value. Everything was delicious but I highly recommend the Breadfruit Gnocchi, Rainbow Runner Crudo, and Criollo Duck Mofongo. Chefs kiss! They have a lovely outdoor seating area, but we opted to sit inside for the ambiance, which turned out to be a great call. Service was excellent from start to finish. Our waiter was knowledgeable, attentive, and gave great recommendations. We decided to go all in on the $85 per person tasting menu. The food ranged from good to very good, and there was a *lot* of it. Standout dishes for me were the ceviche and the desserts, both of which were exceptional. The beef empanadas and breadfruit gnocchi were also highlights. My one criticism is that the tasting menu didn't feel particularly cohesive. We started with yellowfin tuna, moved on to wood-roasted fish, then suddenly shifted into Italian territory with breadfruit gnocchi in a rich buttery sauce before continuing on to beef steak and duck. Individually, many of the dishes were delicious, but together they felt more like a sampler of the restaurant's assortment of dishes rather than a thoughtfully sequenced tasting menu with a clear theme or progression. That said, the quality of the food, generous portions, and outstanding service made for a very enjoyable evening. If you're looking to experience a wide range of the kitchen's offerings, Cocina Abierta delivers.
