Talk about the worst enchiladas I have ever had. I wish I had a video because this might sound crazy but trust me it's all true. My mom and I went here for the first, and last, time on a Wednesday when we knew they'd be less busy. We walk in and get seated right away by the nice host. He proceeds to give us menus all in Spanish. Not a biggie because we could understand a lot but did have to request one in English because there were a few words we didn't know. Next was ordering. I ordered a go to I get at Mexican restaurants I'm eating at for the first time- cheese enchiladas- hard to get wrong. My mom ordered what she thought was a taco plate. Nope it wasn't as classified by our waitress, that's fine. Mom asks if they have a 3 taco plate (twice actually just to clarify) and she says no. We both found that so odd. So she finally just decides to get the same thing as me - cheese enchiladas with rice. Well our food came. Remember earlier when I said I order enchiladas because they're hard to mess up? Well they did- BIG TIME. Let's just say it's the worst enchilada I've ever had. It started when we got our plates and the runner told us the plates were hot - great, amazing, thank you. We both dig in and my mom says hers seems cold. I take a bit of mine and the filling in mine is not just room temp, it's COLD. The enchiladas were filled with what seemed like queso fresco? It was not the typical melting cheeses found in enchiladas. Now I know I'm a white girl but I've grown up in SoCal my whole life in LA County and been exposed to so much amazing authentic Mexican cuisine and also my brother's a food blogger and has taken me to a plethora of Mexican restaurants. I've been to the good, the bad, and the ugly of Mexican restaurants. I know good enchiladas and I know the cheese inside is supposed to be melted. I call over our waitress and mom and I nicely report our food is cold. She apologized and began to take our plates back. Then she says, the plates are hot. We said we know- the sauce is warm, not hot, but the inside is very cold. In all seriousness, she puts down our plates, back on our spots, and says the middle is supposed to be cold. I'm sorry what? We questioned her and she stuck with that the middle was supposed to be cold. NEVER have I had or heard of this. I called many friends who are Hispanic just to make sure I wasn't trippin'. One said, and I quote, "no legit Mexican place will serve you cold cheese". That's what I thought. The place is beautifully decorated but I came for good food. I've gone there 3 times. The 3rd time was the last. VERY RUDE hostess. She was visibly and audibly annoyed when asked to switch seats because she was originally seating us right under their speaker and we couldn't hear each other speak like, at all. Maybe turn the music down a little -it's not the club. Anyhow, when I kindly asked to be moved she rolled her eyes and huffed and puffed while grabbing our place settings hastily. Then she walks away really fast (doesn't tell us to follow her) so my party and I are just standing there not sure what to do and she turns around to signal us to follow her with this look of disgust on her face. We follow her and when we get to the new table she practically throws our place settings on the table and walks away. Completely uncalled for. I NEVER was rude to her!!! Then who I think may have been the manager witnessed it all and didn't say anything. I even asked him if his hostess is always this rude and he ignored me. So disappointing. I can see that my experience is not a once-in-a-while type of thing. I have never experienced anything like this, not even at McDonald's. The other 2 tomes we went they screwed up our order and then forgot some food and then it came later but I never really get upset about that. Came by on a Sunday because I was craving Menudo. Arrived at 1pm, there was a bit of a wait and didn't get seated until 2. I didn't mind waiting because I wanted their menudo. Once we were seated we knew exactly what we wanted to order. I ordered the menudo (obviously), my daughter ordered quesa birria tacos and my boyfriend ordered carne en su jugo. Our meals came with hand made corn tortillas and they were delicious! The service and food were great! They have a lot of employees and everyone was friendly. Met my husband here for dinner and we were served by the enthusiastic and smiling Carmie. He ordered the Cadillac margarita and I ordered the Paloma Estilo Cantarito (can't not order it, it's so good). He ordered a carne asada huarache and I ordered the albóndigas soup with homemade corn tortillas, (honestly the best part of the meal). The wifey and I, your favorite Yelp correspondent, arrived at La Casa Del Abuela (CDA) with great fanfare and anticipation. We'd come on a prior Saturday and found ourselves both awed and intimidated by the line that snaked out the restaurant doors and around to the side parking lot. On that day we demurred, because we had a film to make. We returned yesterday and gave ourselves ample time before our 5:15pm showing of MICHAEL. CDA reminds me of Elvira's Mexican Cuisine in Claremont, another exquisitely decorated restaurant that -just like a formidably gorgeous siren, say JLo or vintage Rito Moreno for my parent's generation- gets you all excited...then lets you down with its food and service. Decor? CDA would vie fiercely with the aforementioned Elvira's for the crown of best decorated Mexican restaurant. You walk into sprightly fuschia pink bougainvillea flowers that dart down from the ceiling, extending a vivacious and warm welcome to one and all. Other top-flight design choices include the festive bounty of hand-woven rattan pendant lights that suspend over most of the tables and booths. There's also a regal Mexican pottery display that is so nice that the nearby American Museum of Ceramic Arts (AMCA) is jealous. Things start nosediving from there, though. For starters, CDA is a rarity among American based Mexican restaurants- They will not bring courtesy baskets of warm chips and salsa. Here you'll pay for that favorite of appetizers. We paid $5.99 for our basket of semi-warm chips with mole salsa and ... couldn't even finish the bowl because we both were put off by the combination of the chips w/ the dense, cinnamon an clove heavy mole. My wife ordered Cocido de Res, and they brought out a huge, steaming vat of the national soup of Mexico. She relished it so much and even happily devoured its leftovers for her breakfast, Sunday morning. Undoubtedly, the soup was the highlight of our collective meal. My intrigue was sparked by the huge, capacious menu that CDA offers its guests- I decided to order a couple of items I typically never order: A flauta de raja (flauta stuffed with a smoked Poblano chile pepper) and a torta estilo de Mexicana, con asada. The flauta would have been much better had CDA inserted a long, sinewy strand of cheese INSIDE the smoked pepper, to create an almost "chile relleno" style effect. But by themselves, the smoked poblano was a mite too smokey and clashed w/ the flauta's fried exterior. A regrettable, 2-star item. My torta was three or four stars- Asada, tomato, lettuce, cheese, avocado and mayo on a French roll. The service was merely okay. I had to ask multiple times for my refills of my diet coke and there were at least two occasions where we had to lobby our requests through other servers, because we couldn't find the one assigned to our table. Our bill was $83.65, including tax and 20 percent tip, for two entrees, chips/dip and a take out order (two flautas de tinga) for our youngest son. The hordes of guests that are usually thronged outside CDA patiently awaiting their seats cannot be entirely wrong- Perhaps we ordered the wrong items. But on this visit by this pair of quite experienced Mexican cuisine eaters, CDA merits three stars. read more

The aesthetics here won me over, walking through the restaurant to our table was a "Wow" at every turn. Loved the style of the natural wood chairs, the long tables, the soft lighting, the (faux) Bougainvillea's and plants throughout the restaurant, Really nice place. I'm not a fan of beans but these were really flavorful, a little different in density and texture but still great tasting! The rice was cold and bland. I passed on serving. The Chile Relleno was "okay". The sauce was completely bland. Absolutely no flavor. The Relleno itself had no heat to it but it had a good amount of cheese and it was well made. As much as I love a beautiful dinner plate, I had an uncomfortable time eating off mine. The design of the plates interfered with my fork and knife. My son ordered five different types of tacos, his least favorite was the Birria, it actually looked dry from the get go. He took 2 bites and left the rest. The other 4 tacos, he devoured. The staff were a bit bland and stale like the chips. Not at all welcoming. The hostess that seated us had an attitude and lacked hospitality, our waiter seemed uncomfortable, impatient, and unhappy to be there, the guy who brought our orders to our table, before he left I asked if we could have some napkins which he did bring but then snapped back with you need to ask your waiter next time. ?? It was my first time there my hubby's 3rd. We started with chips and salsa $6 and worth every penny . They were fresh , crunchy and a must try. He ate every bite. I usually do t like black beans however these were really tasty . The rice was the only just ok item, maybe an off batch , he ate it all though. Met my buddy, Joe, at La Casa De La Abuela to try out a new spot. Overall, we were both pretty satisfied with it and will go back. We were seated right away and service was as expected. Friendly and attentive but not overly so. I ordered the breaded steak dish as I love a good Bistec Empanizado Cuban style and this was the closest they had on the menu. Joe got a massive burrito. The chips and salsa and guacamole were great - like usual prob ate too many chips! My steak was okay. It was good not great. I might be partial to the one I loved at Felix's but they closed some time back and I haven't found one close since. But, it was good. Great spot to take a family or meet a friend. It was taco Tuesday so naturally I got enchiladas. Just kidding; I tried their carnitas, asada, tripa, and pastor tacos. The tripa and the al pastor were good but the carnitas and asada were just okay. I also had their tinga and chicharron tacos dorados, but really wasn't a fan. I have been dying to try out this restaurant and was so happy my dad picked it for his birthday dinner. Mind you, my husband was very skeptical of what the food would be like, since it's an "Instagram viral" restaurant. Thank God it didn't disappoint and my husband said it will probably be our new local Mexican food spot. This is saying a lot since my husband compares any Mexican restaurant to home cooked by family. The decor and tables, ambiance are beautiful and elegant without feeling tacky or too over the top. The service was 5 stars! Our server was Mario Castro. He was excellent the food and drinks all came out very quickly and he corrected a mistake very quickly and took care of it. We hope Mario is our server every time, he kept us wanting to return soon. Our first time here today, 5/13/26. We were seated quickly and our order was taken shortly after. Our waitress was very nice. My mother ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice and pinto beans. I ordered the wet burrito with carnitas and green sauce. Our food came out very quick! My mom said her enchanting were very good, but that the rice and beans were not hot (heat not spice). Aside from that they were good in flavor. My burrito was huge and delicious! We both had leftovers Our waitress had brought out 3 different salsa bottles. I'd advise doing a small sample of each. Been hearing great things about this new restaurant so I was excited to visit. Came here on a Tuesday morning and surprisingly was pretty busy. Right when you walk in you're taken back in the best way of how beautiful it is inside. They really took time with planning out the layout. We sat down right away and were help by Norma, who was very sweet and helpful. I ordered an iced horchata coffee which was delicious I couldn't get enough. To eat I got the bistec à la mexicana guisado which came with rice, beans and tortillas. The tortillas here are so full of flavor I could eat them alone. The steak was lacking a little in flavor and could have used some more salt as were the beans. Everything together in a taco though, AMAZING. I will definitely be coming back. read more

We came here today with family and had a mostly pleasant experience at first, but unfortunately things took a turn toward the end of our visit. Our server, Norma, was kind initially, but there was a key miscommunication while she was clearing plates. She asked my cousin a question that my cousin understood as, "Do you want to take this to go?" so she said yes--because she did want to take the rest home (she still had about 75% of her mole dish left). Instead, Norma took the plate away to be discarded. It was clearly a misunderstanding, and we completely get that those things happen--especially since we all work in the service industry ourselves. What was disappointing was how it was handled afterward. I went up to the front to explain the situation, and the staff there were polite and seemed understanding. I was under the impression it would be resolved, ideally by replacing the dish to-go. However, Norma came back to our table and addressed us in a way that felt confrontational, insisting she had "asked three times," which didn't match what we experienced. The tone felt more defensive than solution-oriented, and unfortunately, there was no resolution offered. I also want to mention that the drink menu could use some clarification. I ordered an iced Abuelita coffee listed under the "regular (non-sweet)" section for $6, but it was actually $7, very sweet, and came with whipped cream without being told. That felt a bit misleading. Overall, we understand that miscommunications happen, but professionalism and problem-solving go a long way. Service was great, servers were kind and attentive. They lagged in some moments due to the heavy foot traffic and full tables which is understandable. We waited 29 minutes and asked 4x for lemon and salt and pepper packets before someone brought it to us. Mind you, they didn't have salt or pepper shakers at the table and you had to ask for them and you had to ask for napkins. They provided a nice cloth style napkin but depending on what you order you may want more paper napkins for convenience. The atmosphere was BEAUTIFUL definitely a great spot to brunch with your girlfriends or celebrate Mother's Day or birthdays. The place is 10/10 aesthetically pleasing for photos. Now for the food, I want to be absolutely honest because my mother and I do Mexican food reviews often and keep it with every bite. The food was good, but not great :( and that hurts to even adding because we ordered a lot to do a food review and we tasted a bit of everything you see on the spread in our video. Though portions were massive and plentiful and we definitely brought a lot back home, it all needed salt and some juiciness to it. It lacked that Mexican saborrrrr and seeing as tho it was executional atmosphere wise I'm dishearten to say that the lack of saborrr is the reason for my rating. This appears to be one of those spots that gives you all the aesthetic vibes you want and a hyphe like energy and music but the food needed more seasoning and flavor. Perhaps it was because we came on a busy day but seeing as though we ordered multiple dishes and they All needed saborrr/ flavor was a bit underwhelming. Out of everything the carnitas sope and the chips and mole sauce was the best. Can be a very busy place - expect to wait - especially on weekends. Pretty decent Mexican food. So many options in the area that are a better value. $6 for chips and salsa?, please. read more
