Just an unpleasant place. I live nearby and would love good food options in area...unfortunately the service here is just horrendous. After going there once I just had no desire to step foot in there again. They make you feel like they are doing you a favor by serving you. And now they've successfully pushed out the BBQ food truck that was across the street. Keep in mind the hours were very different and these places arent really competing...they just can't help but be jerks. Ironically the last time my wife got food from this place it was because she was waiting for her order from the BBQ truck. We won't be going back and will actively tell others to avoid this place. If you are looking for other options in Kula and want to support small businesses, try Morihara Store, 808 Bistro, Maui Slice, or Grandma's Coffee House. Lots more options in Pukalani and Makawao...just don't go here. read more

You will not find a better French bakery anywhere on the mainland or in France than this place. Sure the line is long sometimes, and it is a crapshoot what they might have from day to day but it is all good so it doesn't matter. Some suggestions in order of awesomeness: 1) Pain Aux Raisin - out of this world - if the chef ever stops making this I will hunt him down! :) 2) Big Foot - almond-y flavor - really good! 3) Palmier - ok that should be #1, but anyway, you will never experience a palmier like this if you are lucky to get one hot out of the oven. If you happen across La Provence and don't live in Maui, you will be forced to sell all your belongings and move here rather than eat anyone else's palmier again. 4) Cinnamon Sticky Bun - this is basically crack, not that I have ever tried crack, but you will be addicted and have to move here (see above). Some recommendations: 1) arrive at 8:30am - if you come too early some stuff won't be out of the oven, if you come too late you may miss out. Plan around this and you will thank me later 2) bring cash - they only accept cash and you will want to buy a lot of pastries 3) do not, under any conditions, ask to see what they are cooking in the back. This place was PHENOMENAL. To get it out of the way, it is cash only, so bring cash. We tried the crepes, I had chicken and brie and my date had veggies and goat cheese, both were absolutely wonderful. Topped with a delicious espresso and one of their amazing pastries and you cannot go wrong. Speaking of pastries, The pastry selection for pickup is the best I've seen on the island, everything is delicious. Self serve water. Out of roast beef au jus and waitress came back and said out of avocado for sandwiches. Must be hot cuz ice in cup just brought to table is melting. Five tables with red umbrella shading in outdoors during lunch time. Maybe the indoor seating in the house is only for??? If closes at 2 pm then can't be for dinner. Baguette was fresh, good to sink teeth into. Toothpick was inserted into both halves and thinly cut slivers of chicken, brie cheese, tomato, lettuce and red onions complimented each other. Server was pretty and friendly, checked on us a couple of times. Gave us a run down on their pastries: tarts, croissants, lots of fruit choices. She said good to look at them to decide but you need to go into the bakery. Let hubs eat my pretty side salad with dressing and balsalmic drizzle. Bottled cranberry juice was a nice change from my morning iced tea and pre-lunch bottled water. Hydration is the key during this island hop. Beware the spider webs. read more

Terrible service. Only 1 other party dining in, but never got service after sitting for 30 minutes. "Waitress" completely ignored us when we tried to get her attention. Seemed to have no problem instantly serving the local table that sat 20 minutes after us. Stumbled on this little gem while having car trouble. It's literally across the street from the mechanic. The French pastries are wonderful. Very tasty and not too sweet. I had a crepe and it was wonderful too. There is a nice outdoor sitting area that has a wonderful view of the ocean. The ambiance is very charming. It feels like a bit of France. Doesn't accept credit cards. read more

The puff pastry tarts with various fruits (cherries, apricots) are of course delicious but nothing special (puff pastry, fruit ... there ya go) but the lilikoa meringue tart is to die for and to come back for. We stopped to have breakfast here on our way to Haleakala NP. The eggs benedict with crab cakes were a good breakfast item for sharing, the hollandaise sauce paired perfectly with the crab and eggs. The crepes with chicken and brie were also tasty and large enough to share. We also took chocolate croissant & the lemon pie from their bakery. The croissant didn't have the rich taste that would normally be present, so don't think I would recommend that. The lemon pie was refreshing and quite a large size. Only con would be that I taste some sort of alcohol-like bitterness in it in a few bites (not sure if it was from a vanilla extract or sth else), and that did take away from the taste of the pie. read more

There were 3 or so occasions in the past where I've tried to go here and for one reason or another they were closed? Well we finally made it happen a few months ago when we had friends visiting from another island. We had worked up an appetite after picking strawberries at a farm down the road and we decided to make our way here since restaurant selections around this part of town are minimal. We got to La Provence and found the parking lot to be completely full (there's only a handful of stalls). We ended up parking on the side of the road further down & seemed to work out better anyway. No prob. They are known for really good pastries so after we ordered our meals, I went inside to check out their dessert case. I put in my order ahead of time because I wanted to make sure I got what I wanted before they ran out. Best decision ever! They held my pastries in their case for me while we enjoyed our meal. My mother in-law and I got a crepe and my husband got an eggs benedict. My mother in-law is the most picky eater in the world (I hope she never sees this review), but she thoroughly enjoyed her crepe. For me, it was good, not great. My crepe was a bit dry and I was left wanting more sauce or ... something? Not sure what. After we finished our meal I got the pastries that I had purchased earlier and we all had a bite. The lilikoi merengue was so yummy! All of their desserts are pretty tasty. It is a bit pricey, but pretty doable for a once in a while type of thing. Now, I know La Provence sometimes gets a bad rap when it comes to customer service either being slow or rude, but based on my experience it was fine. The waitress was nice and service was pretty timely and they held my desserts in their case. I believe she was the only waitress serving a pretty full house. We popped in for a pastry and restroom stop before going on a farm tour in the area and managed to score a parking spot right beside the door, which was very lucky as the sides of the road in both directions were full of parked cars proving how popular this cafe is. We arrived around 11am and the pastries had almost disappeared! Luckily the 2 they had remaining were exactly what we wanted to try, the almond tart (dense and moist with a rich short pastry - it may have been better with a layer of raspberry or apricot jam - but it was a true traditional french pastry. Hubby's lilikoi (passion fruit) meringue tart was divine, with a rich fruity sharp custard and a cloud of sugary meringue to cut through the tart fruit. Both pastries were rather large but we didn't find it difficult eating every last crumb...lol. The coffee machine was broken so we opted for tea which came in a teapot, and my hibiscus tea was pink, fragrant and perfect foil to the dense almond sponge. Restrooms were clean, there is a pretty garden patio, the place was packed and there was a contented hum as people ate their crepes and pastries in the sunshine. We will be back for more when we are in the area again, but will try to get there earlier for a larger selection of pastries. read more

Just went to the La Provence Valentines dinner and was so so excited for the beef weillington. not sure what i was expecting but what was delivered was a 1 oz piece of very well done steak (?) honestly unsure if it was even steak bc how hard it was. Baked in a puff pastry-- not what I thought "beef wellington" was... maybe I watch too much Master chef or was excited for someone too cook a medium rare steak for me. but aren't you supposed to roll it wit's prosciutto too? that was not part of this food item. I dunno but I could not even chew thru the meat because it was like a rock. My bf ate the top of the puff pastry which was admittedly beautiful but that made me mad because he ate the only good part of the ordeal. I have been here on two occasions, each time they had little selection. Today I ordered a sándwich from their posted menu, after waiting for 15-20 minutes. I was told they have no sándwiches today, and no further explanation. Like others have said the staff is rude and YES plenty of flys around the food in the cabinet. This is a perfect spot for a quick breakfast after seeing the sunrise at Haleakala summit. It should be just starting to open after enjoying the sunrise and making your way slowly down. Their full breakfast menu (eggs benedicts etc.) is not available until 11 am or so, but bakery goods are! I noticed a sign saying that there is a maximum purchase of 3 pastries per type per party. They focus on quality rather than quantity and these baked goods must be popular so they have to put this restriction! We ordered the ham and cheese quiche, the spinach mushroom and goat cheese quiche, both $4.95 each, and the scone that day which was mango and berries. There is outdoor covered seating and it's a homey feel, with their cat wandering around. Now let me tell you about these quiches. They are probably the best I've ever had. I thought they were a bit on the expensive side, but once I tasted it, I had no regrets. The egg mixture is light and flavourful with lots of ingredients. The pastry around it is crispy and buttery. I wanted to get more for later but we had food left at the condo and no stomach space. The scone was also amazing. My mom said it was the best scone she's ever had. It's crispy outside, but moist inside. Lots of fruit and every bite was delicious. All in all, a perfect place to stop after the summit or if you are in the area and want a quick bite. To go or eat in, either is good! If I ever do visit the summit again on vacation I won't forget to stop by to grab quiches and scones! read more

Many here compare this restaurant and the food that they've had to Paris, France. First off, This place is really cute and the service was great. I like The patio, the natural set up with banana and passion fruit trees surrounding and the views make it very relaxing. In terms of the food, I've never had a crêpe anywhere else in France, French Polynesia, Canada or the US where it's brown and burnt on top. I had the smoked salmon crepe and the filling was quite tasty. My husband had the chicken and cheese crêpe and it was quite bland and average. Both crepes were burnt on top. We also tried their pastries. The almond croissant Was OK not as light and flaky as I'd hoped when comparing to the best I've had. The scone was also ok, a decent breakfast scone. Stopped in here several times for espresso and pastries. Everything was fantastic. Their quiche is perfect: flaky crust, tasty fillings and a beautifully light custard. Their croissants, chocolate and otherwise, were just like those I had in the Paris patisseries. I was surprised to find authentically French pastries on Maui. This is just a brief follow up to my previous review; The bakery is definitely worth going early for and in my opinion after today, a must do. On the days the restaurant is open, the bakery opens at 8, and it appears items begin selling out by 9. After I chose the few that looked amazing, I asked which items I should add to my order being it was my first time I was in time for the bakery and I was told to try their Almond Croissant. I would have never imagined how incredible it was and definitely the best of the ones I tried. I will order it every time I return. I believe most if not all of their pastry prices were between $2.70 and $6, which was pretty reasonable considering the quality of everything. It is still a little disappointing that they do not accept credit cards, but I respect that this choice helps to keep their prices lower. I wonder if it might be better if they increase their prices by 3% or so, and accept cards. read more

It's a shame because the food is good & I used to drive all the way up from Paia for the pastries but after my experience today I won't be coming back. I believe that good customer service & being gracious to our neighbors here on island is one of the threads that holds a community together. Today, the owner answers the phone and for a simple question is terribly rude, treating me like I'm wasting his time by asking about whether they have the product I'm looking for before driving all the way up. He barks at me that I'm wasting his time & then hangs up on me before answering my question. I've spoken with him on 3 seperate occasions and he's like this with me every time. I just can't stomach supporting a business who treats their local customers so poorly. I will miss the food, but I won't miss being treated like dirt. read more
