Missing my TX hispanic bakeries and their plethora of offerings at such deal prices - this one, from what I tried, hit the mark! It's not located in the best area but you walk in and wish other places where taking the same covid precautions they are. I felt safe and only wish I knew a little spanish so I didn't have to point out what I wanted haha. I'm definitely a cream, mousse kind of person, so the cream horn (which I'm not pronouncing in Spanish haha) caught my attention. The lady who helped me was so nice and luckily knew which one I wanted. All I can say is delicious! And only $3, which I bet would be more double the price if at a high end bakery. What I got today was Oooookkkaaayyyyy! Don't expect the burritos to be filling. They are teases. Lol. Appetizers. $5 but they're small. I had the red chili burrito with added potatoes. It was ok. The red sauce seemed canned to me. Not as good as freshly boiled chili. The pastries were decent. Pineapple empanada filling was ok. Kinda bland. The dough was good. This has been my first bad experience at this bakery. I purchased " bolillo" when I got home and took one out and they are hard hard. I called the bakery and I told the lady they are hard and she advised " the bolillo are made to be hard and not soft" I advised her I have never in my 36 years of purchasing bolillos have experienced this before. She just added bring them back if you want but they are made to be hard. To add to this I sent my daughter with the bread back to get a refund and I had my daughter call me on speaker because they where giving her a hard time telling her they can't refund because if they take back it's an item that they can no longer sell. . The lady at the counter then added I have to check with someone in the back. Came back and said for this time I'm going to refund you but understand the bolillo is made to be hard. I'm long overdue for a visit to La Purisima. What took so long you ask? The truth? Until recently, they were a cash only operation (and I never have cash on me). A lame excuse perhaps, but its the truth. And I'm truly glad they take plastic now (for a small fee) because I was ready to sample some of the delectable pastries that have made the Arrellano family a beloved institution here in town. On a Saturday right after lunch, I walked in. You'll find La Purisima's Phoenix location on the north side of Indian School Road, just west of 24th Street. This is actually La Purisima's second location (their main location is in Glendale). Walk inside this Mexican bakery and you're immediately greeted by the friendly staff behind the counter and display cases of delicious looking sweets both in front of and behind the counter. The staff and customers primarily speak Spanish, but don't worry. The staff is bilingual and is happy to help guide you through picking out individual items. With so many choices on hand, my knowledge of Mexican sweets being almost nonexistent, and a growing line of about a dozen customers behind me, I took what I thought would be the quick and easy way out. I asked the staffer to pick out two of his favorite cookies for me and that's what I'd buy. Big mistake (though in the best possible way). Within seconds, seemingly every customer behind me in line started throwing in their own two cents on what they thought were the best items to buy. After a good two minutes of customers debating each other on what were the best items to get, I settled on four pastries (rather than buy the whole store). A concha, a coyota, and a couple of pan finos. Total cost for the four large pastries plus tax was a shockingly cheap $4. All of them were excellent, though I will say the concha (I got a chocolate one) was by far my favorite of the bunch. Soft and chewy, but with slightly sweet crunchy exterior (plus conchas are just beautiful to look at). In addition to the pastries, the bakery also sells bags of their housemate tortillas to go. Juan, Marcy, Irma, and Jose Arrellano have operated La Purisima in some form or another for over 35 years in the valley. Based on the line today at their Phoenix operation, its clear the love and admiration they receive from the community is as strong as ever. And why wouldn't it be? A friendly neighborhood bakery making affordable delicious creations. Here's hoping the Arrellano family keeps baking for another 35 years. read more

If I ever need to get my Mexican sweet bread fix, then I come to La Purisima Bakery! The place is very clean and the staff is always super friendly. I've tried many different kinds of pan dulce but my favorite has to be the conchas. Right around Valentine's Day the bakery will make limited edition heart shaped bread so it makes for a nice gift for my loved ones. I'm not sure how the west valley location is but it would be nice if the East Valley bakery could have a few benches or chairs inside. That way one could enjoy some pan dulce fresh out the back and chill at the spot. read more

Great Bakery This bakery has the freshest, tastiest mexican baked goods I have ever tasted, all of its items are wonderful, and there is such a great selection. La Purisima features pan dulce, doughnuts, empanadas, cookies and delicious freshly made tortillas straight out of the tortilla machine, served nice and hot. Sorry, my review is only going to discuss the tres leche cake I ate from here. It sucks. It is really dry. All the condensed milk is at the bottom and none of it is in the actual cake. There is an obscene amount of frosting. The weird jelly-on-a-graham-cracker that is used to decorate the top of the cake is really gross too. It looks like it would taste good... but it just totally does not. I'm certain this bakery excels at other kinds of pastries or baked goods. I mean, it is highly rated on Yelp, so they must do well. And one day, I would love to try their other pastries, and write them another review. However, AVOID THE TRES LECHE. It tastes like disappointment. Dry disappointment. read more

Great quality bakery. You will find fresh bake bread. All the bread is good. Tamales are not great but good enough for a craving but I wouldn't recommend. The service varies sometimes is good and sometimes they can be rude. The upside down is that they can be lazy. Been wanting to go here for a awhile. The first time I went it was on a Monday, but they are closed on Monday. It didn't say that anywhere so I didn't know. But I wasn't the only one that didn't know. There were 4-5 people trying to open the door too while I sat in my car looking for another store to get conchas. I looked them up on Saturday again because I was craving tamale, luckily I saw the sign "cash only". I have to say this has been the best tamal i have had since East Los. It was small at first glance, but it's pack with a good portion of meat. The masa is moist and juicy, I ate 5 between lunch and dinner. The concha was so moist and soft, it was delightful. My family has been coming to La Purisima for over 30 years now. We used to frequent their flagship store in Glendale at least once a week back during my childhood. Now that I am in the East Valley, I was very happy to find they have a second location in central Phoenix. Closer to me than driving down to Glendale. Their baked good are all delicious. I tend to always order their conchas with the different colored sugar toppings. So soft and chewy! Bolillos are the best that I have found. The flour tortillas are truly the best ones out there for me. They are a little on the thicker side, which I happen to like. For some, they may be too thick. I seriously have tried to buy other grocery store flour tortillas to hold me over until I make it to La Purisima. It's always a mistake to do so. No other mass produced tortillas comes close to theirs in taste and texture. The main reason I drive to La Purisima is for their masa. Seriously the best thing that they make. My family has been making tamales exclusively with their masa for over three decades. I hope that La Purisima stays around for many more decades to come!I hope that one day my son can take his kids there for a tasty Mexican pastry. Reason for four stars- they really should consider accepting plastic. It's always a pain in the ass to head that way from far away only to remember that they only take cash. Thanksgiving is approaching and to celebrate, my office had a holiday potluck today. I wanted my contribution to be something out of the ordinary. Empanadas came to mind. Now, I just needed to find someplace closer than Tucson that makes great empanadas. Yelp! pointed me towards La Purisima Bakery on Indian School Road. I should probably warn you now, in case you don't read to the bottom of this review. Bring cash. They do not accept plastic. Bring lots of cash! You're going to want one of everything! Actually, the prices are very reasonable here. The dozen assorted empanadas I purchased cost $10 and change. Comparable to the price of a dozen donuts. But that's not a fair comparison. Donuts don't offer the flavors you can find hiding inside the empanadas at La Purisima! There was strawberry, cherry, apple, guava, pineapple, pumpkin, peach and cheese. I don't even think I named them all... They were perfect! And they were still warm! Regardless of the filling, the pastry crust was amazing. The cases at La Purisima were stocked full of familiar items. There were also a few things that I have never seen in a Mexican bakery. That's all the reason I need to go back! So first was kind of hard to find as no signage on Indian school but worth the search. Have been to the other location and knew I had to go again due to high quality. We are moving from Ca to ABQ and they are conveniently enroute. If you love tamales it's a must stop. I mistakenly ordered takeout last night before trip here and for $21 from a restaurant got sub par tamales. From la Purisima got 18 tamales, a dozen tortillas and some cookies for under $30. You know me and my spontaneous pullovers when I see a bakery sign. Today I was pleasantly surprised, I have never been to an authentic Mexican Bakery. I felt a little intimidated not knowing what things were even though everything looked amazing.The names were in Spanish but not the prices. I'm telling you, what a steal they were! I have never seen such delicacies at prices that even a child could afford. I Mean look at this Gorgeous not to mention Scrumptious "Encocado" (see pics)........brace your self...... it was .75 cents!!!!!!! Layers of flaky pastry topped with toasted coconut and sugar, finished of with a dollop of Bavarian cream. DO you even know what Heaven tastes like, I do now. Was in the area due to the Chinese New Year festival at the cofco center. After falling in love with all the Mexican pastries at Phoenix Ranch Market I did some research on other various valley Panaderia. This one poped up on Yelp and I had been looking for a good excuse to make it here for a long time. Today was that day! I stopped by early this morning to satisfy my crave for something new. The place is very clean and a man came out to greet me and was ready to serve. He clearly explained every item I was curious about since the labels were in Spanish. I asked if his name was Miguel and he said yes. I told him I read about his bakery on Yelp. Then he said that he loves Yelp and that's how word is going around now for him and he also uses to find reviews on other places. He was very friendly and had lots of patience. I was the only customer at the time and he actually doesn't mind having a conversation unlike open ended talks with others. I ended up buying 10 pastries and it cost $6.80. What a great deal! They also sell other items such as tamales, burritos, and menudo. I inquired about the burritos cuz I like mine with a little kick,but unfortunately they weren't ready yet. He showed me the homemade tortillas and he says he used them on the burritos. He said they don't look big, but he assured that the burritos are filled with red (mild) or green (with a kick) chili, shredded pork, and some potatoes. He said that one burrito is good to fill up a person. So...I must come back and try it. So far I've had the flaky pastry with the shredded coconut and Bavarian cream...the Bavarian wasn't as creamy than I'm used to. I almost thought it would have been better off to not have it, but it's a nice added flavor when you eat it all together rather than just tasting the Bavarian on its on. I had that curvy, pretty looking pastry which is topped with crystal sugars and with all the sugar on top, I thought it might be too sweet, but nope. It was just fine with the pineapple filling (excuse me as I wipe my drool). Then it was off to have the caramel flautas dusted with powdered sugar. The first bite was eh. The second bite was...um. Third bite, WOW! I finally reached the part that had more caramel in it and I LOVE IT!!! Did I mention that I'm not a big fan of caramel? This caramel is sweet and creamy. It's just so good! A definitely must have for next time. That's about as much my tummy let me eat for today. I'm sure the rest will be just as good and I can't wait till tomorrow morning to try to rest of my goodies. read more
