I have ordered some cakes here and i like the taste of them. They over charged me for details on my cake because i wanted it done just like the photo i showed him for reference ( i also ordered the cake about two weeks in advance). When i got the cake i sent my boyfriend for the cake and did not get a chance to see it till it was cake time and noticed it looked rushed. The service there also sucks. The guy is rude and the music there is too loud to even hear him clearly. For a bakery to do good cakes it needs to work on its customer service. read more

It had been a while since we stepped into La Sabrosita though I always enjoy their inventory as well as the friendliness of the staff. Their breads, rolls, pastries, and everything else are delicious. We've ordered their dulce de leche and their fruit-stuffed cakes on a few occasions and highly recommend them to anyone. I've visited La Sabrosita on the way to dinner with friends to bring breads and other offerings and they've always been a hit. I'm happy to support this bakery and the people behind it. My GO-TO when I need some Latino treats! They make so much, from alfajores and tres leches to polvorones and chicharrones! They also have a small convenience store where you can pick up items that you would find at a bodega, like Inca Kola and Nescafe. I believe they also bake bread daily, though I have yet to try it (silly, I know). If you want a beautifully decorated tres leches cake at a good price, this is the place to go -- I ordered one recently for my mom's birthday in October and it turned out beautifully. The only set back I experienced when I visited during the pandemic was the the employees weren't wearing masks. They had them present (pulled under their chin), but they weren't worn over their mouth and nose. The customers had masks on, but I was a bit disappointed. read more

My last visit was disappointing. I had to wait 15 minutes to get acknowledged by one of the many "busy" workers. I gave exact arrival time that was disregarded. The writing on the cake was not done. I was told they would immediately do it in 15 minutes. I gave myself an hour to just pick up the cake and leave as it was prepaid. I used up the time waiting for my turn to talk to someone, waiting to get the cake itself, waiting for them to box it up, and finally waiting to leave the store due yo a delivery truck blocking the front doors and parking spaces. My family had enjoyed their cakes every time the past 4 years. My impression this last visit was that they did not care about customers. I felt that I was in the way and unwelcome. I figured after coming here for the 2nd time, I should probably write a review. This bakery gets a 5 star rating from me because the customer service is excellent, I love everything I've tried here so far (thankfully, I haven't been one of the people who've gotten stale pastries here), another awesome thing about this place is that they're reasonably priced. We got 2 muffins, 1 sweet bread, 1 flan, 1 cookie, 1 donut, 1 jelly roll, 1 puff pastry for about $12 I believe. Both times I've come here the family who runs the business has been really friendly. My first experience; The woman who checked us out, the wife I'm assuming, was really nice and she just had a great vibe exuding from her. My second experience; Pretty much everyone in there addressed us, and said to let them know if we had any questions. This time the husband checked us out. He was also very nice, and chatted a bit with us. My favorites: The GIANT Elephant Ears, Vanilla Muffins, Flan, the puff pastries filled with Bavarian Cream, and the sweet breads I really enjoy the fact that these pastries are not overtly decadent or sweet. I also enjoy that this is a REAL BAKERY and not another ridiculous "trendy" cupcake shop. Please just shut up about your triple vanilla bean avacado cupcake with whatever infused buttercream, and just come to a place like this and stuff your face with some tres leche or something. read more

This place is the bomb diggity and that's the best way to sum it up!! Great customer service, wonderful variety, spacious and minimalistic, but stylish interior, clean, high quality, great prices, and WONDERFUL hours! They're open, at the very least, until 9PM on the weekend, but maybe even 10. This is a Mexican-owned bakery with treats from Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador...a good mix of it all. I LOVE yoyos! they're wonderful thick, heavy ball-shaped cakes filled with what i believe is strawberry gel and rolled in strawberry gel and coconut. DEELISH!! i always got at least 6 to take with me when I was studying in Charlottesville. There's one Colombian thing that's ball-shaped, coated in coarse sugar and filled with dulce de leche that's AMAZING too! It has the perfect amount of sweetness, very little surprisingly. The staff is great! They're always willing to answer questions and help out in any way. In fact, most of the time, they'll give new customers a small orientation to their baked goods, which is probably a huge part of their success. They make everyone feel more than comfortable. They also sell empanadas and tamales as well. FYI, they alternate the baking schedule every other day or so, so you won't always see the same things. By the way, they also have a small market portion on the side. Phone cards sold here as well. In short, Panaderia La Sabrosita, or Tasty Bakery, always lives up to its name! Stop by chicken fiesta first! The food there is great! Notes: Now serving tamales, empanadas, and pollo campero (super popular Latin KFC-type joint specializing in grilled and fried chicken with tons of creative dipping sauces) UPDATE: They have re-opened, they also have an awesome puff pastry section and I LOVE the caramel and cream cheese puff pastry. This place made the BEST Tres Leches Cake for my brother's birthday. I went in the day of his birthday and they were very accommodating. The Cake was made to feed 10-15 people and with tax we paid less than 30 bucks. It was ready for pick up the same day and the gentleman who was working on it took the cake with me to the car while I got in. Thank you very much sir! The cake itself was AMAZING. Usually this flavor cake tastes extremely sweet from other bakeries I've had it at. This cake had such a moist core and the cake and frosting was not pressingly sweet at all! It was so light tasting that my family often went back for a second helping! This bakery always smelled amazing when I went in, and the cake taste totally verifies the smell floating around the bakery! Want to give a shout out to special friends that really stepped up and pulled off a miracle for me with very short notice. On Saturday I offered to help a friend who was going to throw a surprise 60th Birthday party. I accepted the challenge to provide the Birthday cake. I did this knowing "I knew a guy" that does fantastic looking, but even better tasting, custom cakes. So off I went, across the river to South Richmond, to see if I could trade on my friendship and ask a herculean request. Armed with a photo gotten from Google, 30 potential guests and very little time. Even I was surprised when I was given the response "No Problem". Yesterday was the big day, arrived @ 4:00 PM to pickup for a 6:00 party. Walking in with bated breath, I was quickly greeted with "All ready, let me go get it from the back". Already amazed that it truly was ready I was simply blown away when I saw the spectacularly executed cake. Mind you this wasn't some simple kids sheet cake. Rather a custom made shaped cake. It was so memorable that I ordered one in September for a friend and La Sobracita was so sweet to deliver it to my friend at no cost. As you head out Midlothian on a small vista, you will see the sign announcing the location of La Sabrosita. For a while, it was closed, I believe due to a fire. However, it reopened two months ago to a much cleaner/nicer layout. Although they have a small grocery section, the new Sabrosita appears to have dedicated more spirit and space to the bakery. I've been in quite a few Latin markets in Richmond, but this store has the largest selection of Latin treats in the area. On our initial return, we purchased a piece of bread pudding, two ham and cheese pastries and 2 cheese pastries. The bread pudding had an understated sweetness to it that I liked. The ham and cheese pastry was dough around a piece of ham and some cheese. The dough also had a very slight sweetness to it and was baked just right. The cost for the five pieces was just over 8 dollars with tax or just over 1.50 an item. In the end, I like the new shop. It leaves a much better first impression upon those entering for the first time. It seems to me like they lessened the grocery selection, but enhanced the bakery. The price is certainly reasonable for the quality of the items received and it is all served up by a friendly staff, who speak both English and Spanish. Latin bakeries are not for everyone, but if you're willing to give it a shot and want to try what may be the best Richmond has to offer, then make your way to La Sabrosita! read more

I have been meaning to check this place out for quite some time, especially considering that it's only a few blocks down from where I work. I grew up in a Hispanic neighborhood when I was kid and that explains my love for nachos, cheese, and churros. Upon walking in I only thought this place sold baked goods as the name indicated but they offer a little bit more than just that. They have: an assortment of candies, dried goods, and possibly a deli meat section? I am not sure about that part but It looked like that was what it was. I would consider this place kind of like a Mexican inspired 7-11 with a great selection of sweets. They have plenty of desserts/sweets ranging from cookies, to donuts to croissants and everything in between. I got the following: Cannoli, cheese custard, cinnamon twists, cream cheese croissants, sugar donuts, a couple of mexican cookies, one churro and of course the Tres Leches cake. Everything is self serve and you up at the counter. Prices are fairly reasonable and I think the most expensive thing was the tres leches cake at $3 each. I actually only ate the TLC and rest of the sweets my parents ate and said they were pretty good. The tres leches cake was HEAVENLY. It was sweet, moist, and simply divine; the serving size of one was also a generous portion as well. The churros were the only "hot" sweet item tasted great fresh and I had a bite the moment I got into my car... The parking lot is very small and can take some time getting out of as you have to reverse all the way back out of it. I would come here and again and see what else my sweet tooth desires. read more

I ordered a 2 tier marble tres leches cake with whipped icing for my daughter's 5th Birthday and it was not only made exactly as I requested it to look (turned out beautiful!) but it tasted incredible as well! I will never order a cake from Martin's (Ukrops) again. As a matter of fact, I just went in and bought myself my own birthday cake from here. Popped open the box and ate a piece before I even had a chance to share. A big, fluffy cake, strawberry filling, and whipped icing that isn't too sweet. All of the other baked goodies are delicious as well. My daughter got a pink/chocolate cookie (sorry I don't know the Spanish name) and she loved it. Everyone that works here is no nice and friendly. I really wanted to like this place. We went here twice. The first time was pretty good. We met some of the family that owns the bakery, and they were very nice and helpful. The pastries we bought were tasty. Why the 1 star review? Well, we went back with our parents and bought some more pastries. Everything tasted a little dry. My wife just bit into a lemon filled pastry, and it turns out that it was lemon and mold filled. Absolutely disgusting. Have to commend this bakery on % professionalism and accommodating manner. We placed an order for a cake with less than a week's time. Since I wasn't able to make it to the bakery in person and my husband couldn't remember the exact cake he ordered I was panicking and called them to help make sure the cake was the design I had wanted. The chef was extremely accommodating and changed the order last minute to make sure we had the most awesome cake to welcome our baby boy! All the guests raved about the cake and the manner in which I was dealt with ensured that they now have a repeat customer. We stopped by La Sabrosita after eating lunch next door at Chicken Fiesta. Both are winners! This is a wonderful bakery. The staff here is incredibly friendly. They answered all of our questions, gave us the lay of the land, etc. By staff, I also mean the sweetest little girl who must be the owner's daughter. Complete with cupcake apron, she told us which delights were savory, which were sweet, asked us if this was our first time in the bakery, etc. I see a future businesswoman in her. Adorable. My 4 y.o. ate his entire butterfly cookie on the drive home, and he never finishes anything. We're saving our caramel cream in puff pastry for later...if it lasts that long. Freshness of baked items are not consistent. I've left with stale items and I've left with some fresh items, sometimes both. You know what keeps me coming back? Some of the unusual items you can't find anywhere else. Such as guava and mango filled pastries - light and fluffy croissant like filled with all sorts of deliciousness. Also individually sliced cakes and cookies are in a self serve display, some different types I've never seen at other bakeries too. I once picked up an emergency birthday cake from here, that was weirdly delicious. Weird in that some of the fluffy whipped frosting was blue and left ones mouth tinted in blue (pretty fun for drunk adults) the cake was moist and the frosting was yum. I'm really picky on frosting. I LOVE this bakery! It is SO hard to find a good sub-roll in this town. There is nothing like thinly, fresh sliced Boar's Head on a fresh sub-roll from La Sobrosita! The rest of the store can be hit or miss though...But I hear they make a great cake for any event/celebration. (Tres Leches Mmmmm!) I will have to try one day and update on how it is! They also have a wide variety of pastries as well; they are beautiful! However, you can't really tell if they are fresh or past their prime so I tend to stick to what I know is fresh and made daily. When you go in, it is pretty confusing as well. There is no order/system to grabbing the goodies out of the cases/off the racks. You have to really look around to figure out how to get the items and what to put them in. They keep brown bags, pastry hand-sheets, and gloves on this little counter(?) near a small refrigerator. On my most recent trip I was overcome with thirst and was excited to get an ice cold Diet Coke in the aluminum bottle (which I love!!). Unfortunately, I noticed it tasted flat and awfully sweet; I looked at the expiration date and it was almost 6 months past. It could have easily been an oversight but it was a bummer nonetheless. $3.00 for a flat soda is hard to ignore - just check the dates on any products you purchase! (FIFO is obviously not practiced at this store) They have a few kinks to work through, but they are locally owned/operated and making homemade bakery items that anyone can enjoy! read more

I should offer a caveat that I try to only indulge in carbs/sweets when I find them to be very, very good, and while I've tasted a number of the items here, they all tasted exactly the same regardless of the flavor of fruit or type of item (mostly cookies) - mainly just super sugary sweet, flour, and shortening. I feel like every since they had the huge fire and had to shut down to renovate, they have been struggling to get back to being the best!
