I was just minding my own business and taking a walk when I found myself at Trendy Taco for some impulse eating. Food is made to order so it's not super fast. And payment is cash only. I ordered the al pastor taco ($3.25), the poblano raja taco ($3.50), and horchata ($3). The al pastor taco had nice chunks of seasoned meat and a touch of pineapple, which really made the flavors mingle well. I always like a smoky poblano so the poblano taco was a must. I always get horchata wherever it's available. The trio made a lovely lunch. I liked it so much, I went back on a different day to try their ground beef nachos ($9.95) because nachos! I came here with my husband for a quick dinner on a Saturday night and it looked like they were pretty busy but mostly with take out orders. The guy taking the order was nice and friendly so that was nice. We ordered some pastor, some shrimp, some steak and some chicken tacos. The pastor with their yummy sauce was my favorite so definitely get that one. I didn't love the shrimp one as the flavor wasn't for me. My hubby said the chicken and steak ones were tasty but not as good as the pastor tacos. The wait for the tacos was okay but a little longer than normal for a quick taco joint, I'm guessing because they were trying to fulfill those to go orders. No complimentary chips and salsa while you wait which is something I've seen at other places. Just found this place on Yelp. Stopped in after work and was not disappointed! Their Chorizzo Tacos are the bomb. A little salty but absolutely delicious! This review is months overdue since my family and I found this neighborhood gem during the summer. The menu is simple and service was excellent. My wife enjoyed a torta with grilled shrimp, I had the carne asada Burrito, my 4yo had the Cisco kid taco with ground beef and our toddler 1yo liked the plain quesadilla with a side of beans. Delicious, unique and affordable tacos/burritos. At $3-4 per taco, you really can't go wrong with any of the selections. Everything from the low-key ambiance to the friendly service makes this a great place for a quick lunch. I got the chicken taco and the poblano taco and while I was hoping that the poblano taco would be a little spicier, the flavors in both of these were on point. Their hot sauces are really flavorful as well but not really all that spicy. The green sauce has a little more of a bold flavor and the red one has a bit more heat. Or combine them both! Decent little taco joint in the northshore. Typically get the same thing each time we go because it's literally good each and every time! I stick to the carne asada taco & the shrimp taco plus we split chips and guacamole EVERY time (it my husbands favorite!). What's great is the tacos are filled with just the right amount to where they aren't falling apart and super messy. You'll easily get full off 2 tacos & guac. Also had their homemade fresh limeade which was so good we wish we had another when we got home! The only downsides are that it's cash only (we forgot tonight but thankfully there's a Chase ATM near by) & they don't offer free refills...so because the Limeade was so good we had to pay twice (yes we got a refill). Took about 10 mins for them to whip up my burrito. Pros: shrimp cooked perfectly, large portion. Just wanted to write an update; this place is generally great but I'm going to start off with a negative. The very nice lady who works at the counter pushed the "elote in a cup," and I tried it against my better judgment. It was truly nasty and bore no resemblance to any elote I've ever had. It tasted like flavorless corn floating in mayo with some totally off spices. They should just stick with a standard elote recipe if they're going to sell it. Trendy Taco is a great place for a taqueria fix. I appreciate that they have horchata; it's very good. I've tried all the taco options, and they're all very good. Shrimp is probably my favorite, with a sauce I've never seen. Chorizo tacos were good and flavorful, and they appear to take the time to squeeze most of the grease out so you don't feel so bad eating them. Chips available upon request. They could do better on their salsas, but they're not bad. Trendy Taco is not nearly as good as Taco Nano, the North Shore gold standard, but much more convenient for us. Short and sweet review: my family has a local business around the corner and I thought I would change up my lunch so I popped into trendy taco and ordered a steak burrito to go. The girl who took my order was super friendly and the place is super small and cute to pop in and grab some tacos. The steak burrito was amazing! It was refreshing and not heavy at all. I thought the steak was cooked perfectly and all the burrito pairings went well. And I happened to really like the tortilla (usually I'm not a fan and ill deconstruct the burrito). I have to admit that I was surprised (but delighted) to see a taqueria in downtown Wilmette. The tacos are pretty good. Not quite as good as the best kind of classic dingy taqueria like you'd find in, say, Rogers Park or Uptown. But let's be honest--a classic dingy taqueria would never fly in Wilmette. This place is bright and squeaky clean, and the young operators are warm and courteous. The taco fillings and toppings are fairly traditional though; this is not a contemporary-twist kind of place. Vegetarian: nice grilled vegetable flavor (basically mushrooms and various peppers); no cheese needed. Shrimp: thumbs up, comes with an aioli and shredded cabbage. Chorizo and chicken: fine, a little bland but not as greasy or dry (respectively) as you would expect. Carne asada and al pastor: probably the best, because the meat comes in modest chunks (rather than bits like at many taquerias) and you can actually taste the flavor of the meat. The tortilla is very thick, so the doubling is not needed for structural integrity, and overwhelms the flavor of the taco. I always try one bite with the double but then remove the outer one; every taco is improved greatly by this move. One other quibble--on the meat tacos I find the application of onions and cilantro kind of meager. For three bucks, they can sprinkle some more onions on there. Overall, this is a rarity for downtown Wilmette--a good cheap option. read more

Stopped by here one night for takeout because the tacos looked authentic. I was disappointed by the flavors I tried - fish, shrimp and chicken. The shrimp in particular tasted the opposite of fresh. All of them were pretty dry and unremarkable. The aftertaste of the shrimp tacos though; I can't get it out of my mouth. There's a beautiful park across the street with a fountain with plenty of picnic tables if you would like to eat outside. I love the cleanliness and hardworking staff in the restaurant. The chicken tacos with bell pepper was so dry it literally hurt going down my throat, I loaded it up with their hot salsa but that didn't help at all. The chipotle chicken taco had no chipotle flavor, just a chicken taco with lettuce and sour cream. The rice had a very bold flavor that I liked at first but after the third spoonful I realized that the flavor was very very strong... I couldn't really tell what it was but I kinda tasted like soy sauce. My boyfriend and I agree that their hot salsa is not hot at all... if your someone that can handle heat you'll be greatly disappointed. Not bad. If you're in the area looking for some good tacos this is a pretty solid choice. Being used to some great choices in Pilsen and Logan square, I love tacos and am spoiled with great choices. The carne Asada is a little under seasoned but the meat was good quality and cooked well. I also ordered the shrimp tacos, which was well seasoned and pretty tasty. The fillings for the tacos were also pretty generous. The restaurant was clean, well decorated and there was good service. Very casual small little place in wilmette. Stopped by for lunch, the food was fine but unremarkable. The chorizo taco was authentic and tasty. The carne asada was a bit dry and lacking in flavor, same with the al pastor which as a result basically just tasted like pineapple. The tacos were actually super greasy as well, not just from the meats but the tortillas themselves were coated in oil somehow. Rice and beans were too bland, same with the salsas. The guacamole had craisins in it, that was a first. For North Shore tacos, better to go to Taco Diablo or La Prinicipal, but of course even more ideal is to go to a "real" joint in south Chicago. Don't get me wrong, I use card for everything and cash only used to be a pet peeve of mine, BUT a good taco is a good taco. However, I went here with my toddler who ended up having to pee. This place pretty much has everything going for it. Location-right in downtown, walk to train. Decor--mucho attention to detail here. The place has a definite hipster Mexican aesthetic with an incredibly efficient use of their awkwardly shaped space. The menu includes many tasty options, and a taco of the day.
