    chips and guacamole
    Anne Marie H.

My friend has been mentioning this place for a while, so I finally decided to try it on a Saturday evening around 5:30. The first thing I noticed was the fun decor and an easy-to-read menu on the wall. Although Taco Nano is the kind of place where you order, sit down, and they bring the food out to you, I was impressed that there was ample seating, including booths. I ordered a Vegetariano Al Carbon taco, a side of rice, a side of beans without cheese, and guacamole and chips (all vegan). The chips and guac came out first, and we both enjoyed them. The portion size was ample, and my friend appreciated that we could order it mild so it didn't have a ton of onions. I also liked the rice and beans. The taco was dry (I should have put some guacamole in it), but it tasted good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The taco was served on a reusable metal tray, but I did not like that the rice and beans came in throw-away plastic containers.

Had to check out another place in Northfield we heard good things about. It seems like all these are in strip malls, ironic for a pretty fancy suburb. Taco Nano has gotten lots of good reviews, and there's even awards for these on the walls. Lots of good choices for any preference, including margaritas. You can also get you drink on as well as eat on, and there's lots of choices for protein. A very casual place where orders are taken at a counter. It's then brought over. The prices seem kind of high for this kind of thing. High on the drinks especially. It's $10 for a Margarita. These come in pretty tiny cups, so not worth it for these. As for the tacos, there's a lot. We got some of the Vegetariano Al Carbon, the one without any meat. It's $4 each. These had carrots, crispy carrot strings, grilled portobello, red peppers, salpicon de serrano, and zucchini. Good flavor combination. These had texture and weren't all mushy like some vegetarian tacos can get. Good even though it's not authentic. It's more like a place for lunch than it is for anything fancy. The tacos mostly have meat except the one for vegans and vegetarians.

    Chopped up rubber band

I used to love their tacos until I almost swallowed a piece of rubber band that holds vegetable bundle. But that wasn't the only issue. I called to tell them about it and they asked for pictures. so I sent few pictures but I didn't hear from them. So I called back and they said the manager will call me back which never happened. I called few more times asking for a manager, and they told me to call certain day certain time to speak to the manager. I wasn't asking to get a hold of a president. why does it have to be this difficult to get a decent customer service? They simply ghosted me and leave me no choice to write this review.

Came on a recommendation from my coworker to try tacos. Being from NY, it's been rough trying to find decent mexican food with good flavor. The lady at the front was welcoming and helpful. The menu looked great with a good variety of options. The restaurant was well lit and welcoming. It had a nice ambiance with good spacing. We ordered the chicken taquitos, 6 tacos - pollo gringo, beef barbacoa, pork al pastor, carne asada, sea of cortez and the old el paso, as well as a Horchata. Chicken taquitos - was good. I wish the chicken was a little more moist and had a little more flavor but otherwise good with the 3 sauces they gave us. Out of the tacos, the pollo gringo, beef barbacoa, pork al pastor, and carne asada were a bit flavorless and dry in our opinion. They tasted okay but just seemed bland. Our favorite were the sea of cortez and the old el paso. They had a bit more flavor but was still mainly okay in our opinion. The horchata - was good. Wish it was a little less watery but had a nice cinnamon flavor. Overall, thought it was okay. Food was okay but nothing amazing.

I started with the guacamole, which I got spicy, and the shrimp soup. The guacamole had good balance and texture, but I didn't get a lot of spice from the flavor that I requested. The shrimp soup had a nice, spicy broth with well cooked shrimp. However, I would have liked the shrimp to be more abundant and chopped up. Also would've liked to see some more substance in the soup such as avocado or maybe some corn. The entrees is where it really stood out. The steak burrito was flavorful and the steak was tender and the ratio of steak, cheese, beans, and other fixings were perfectly executed. The enchiladas were delicious as well with the mole sauce having an exceptional flavor and spice. Beans and rice that came with the enchiladas and burritos were both good and cooked well. The tres leches cake was outstanding! The balance of sweetness and the tart berries layered in the cake gave great texture as most tres leches cakes can sometimes be one dimensional. The cake is a MUST if you come here. Delicious Mexican food here, a nice change for me to try, and I will be back.

On a rainy Thursday night, we finally had a chance to check it out because we wanted a quick and easy meal before heading to the Art exhibition opening in the Northbrook Public Library close by. The restaurant was not busy at the time. There was only 1 table occupied. After we settled down, there was another small table taken. Our waitress was friendly, but after she brought the Miller Light for my husband and a draft beer "Fist City" for our daughter, she forgot about my lemonade. I had to remind her when she brought our food. She also just brought 1 Fish Taco when my daughter ordered 2, and had to place another order again. Not a big deal. When we left and passed by her, she didn't say anything like thank you or good bye, just looking at us. It was a little awkward. Well, maybe she's just not very outgoing. Hope that I was not expecting too much from a little eatery. Now on to the tacos. There were hits and misses. The Crispy Avocado Taco was very good! It's my first time tasting fried avocado, crispy and flavorful! I would order that again! However, the lamb in the Lamb Carnitas Taco was bland and rather dry. it's the first time that I ever had lamb that had no flavor. Although the mango slaw had a nice crunch, tart and refreshing, and went well with the lamb meat, it was skimpy and not enough to top all the meat. I joked to my husband that maybe that's the taste of munching on cardboard! I don't like to waste food and I wasn't full, but I could not continue eating, and had to waste half of the lamb taco. Husband thought that his Blackened Salmon Taco was OK, but his Steak Taco was not, since every bite of steak had gristle. He was surprised since that was supposed to be their signature taco. Daughter's 2 Fish tacos were good, except that she didn't like the flour taco shells. She prefers corn taco shells. My lamb taco had corn taco shells (2 layers) and the crispy avocado had flour shells. I love supporting local businesses and really planned to give Eataco 5 stars before we came, but had to deduct 1 star after we dined in. However, when I read more reviews afterward and found that many customers enjoyed the 2 bottles of salsa (1 green and 1 red) that came with the tacos, and we had no condiments of any kind on our table. Should I had a bottle of salsa, the Lamb Carnitas would have been edible. Unfortunately, I had to deduct another star. Our overall experience at Eataco was not bad, it took us only 55 minutes for the meal. It fits the bill when you need something quick and simple.
