Of all places a Mexican restaurant in Northbrook. LaTaquiza has popped up on my feed every time I look on yelp when I'm hungry and I finally gave it a try. I crave authenticity when I have Mexican, so I was absolutely grateful when I finally checked this out on a Mexican food crave and I just cannot stomach chipotle. The menu does not have a many choices of meats as I'm used to, but hey, it is Northbrook after all. Lengua and al pastor probably won't sell. I had steak and chicken options. They were kind to let me try out the chicken tinga as I was worried about spice for my child. I would devour, but a tad spicy for children. There are a few very intriguing options Giant torta the size of your face, burrtio, tacos or tamales. I like the value positioning of the menu items. They also have horchata! I settled for the chicken burrito and the steak torta (normal size). The food is good, the staff was very kind. And I will be back for their tamales and taco night. Chips and salsa are additional cost. The guacamole portion was generous for the price and was very good. The salsas are homemade and absolutely yummy. haha, I will try to take down the giant torta as a food challenge one day. Maybe 3mins limit challenge? This was my first time here; I met a friend for lunch and I'm so glad I did. If you're looking for fake Tex-Mex this is not your place. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, then look no further. Everyone from the front clerk to the cooks are Mexican... so you know it's good. Live a very select menu but again it's all very authentic and I'm sure all of it is great. I ordered a plate of nachos covered in beans and my meat of choice and cheese and sour cream. We had carryout tacos from here on their Taco Tuesday. That means $1.25 per taco instead of the regular $2.25. The tiny space was packed with diners as well as a relatively long ordering queue (maybe 6 deep) given the ordering speed we observed. Good thing we called the order in ahead of time. We tried 10 tacos - 3 x steak (asada), 3 x pork (bomba), 3 x spicy shredded chicken (tinga), and one chorizo. The chicken was pretty spicy, but good. All were prepared Mexican style, that is, with cilantro and onions. All of the corn tortillas were filled with a modest amount of meat, but still a decent value overall particularly at the special Tuesday price. read more

Thank you La Taquiza...as I am going to shut off my taco craving for a while now. You have conquered the taste, my money and my time's worth, while I was on a venture for finding delicious taco meats with reasonable prices and without driving too far. I shall return. My daughter will be with me for sure because she loved every forkful of her Asada Burrito Bowl. I loved all the flavors of the tacos that I've tried- TINGA (spicy chicken breast), BOMBA (cubed pork, ham, chorizo, pineapple), and my favorite is the ASADA(steak). All of the meats were perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I like the fact that it is a small and casual place but the staff are very friendly and know their products really well. They're all Mexicans!!! Can you imagine how authentic can each dish get? The tiny place was packed at 7pm on a Wednesday night with people coming to pick up take out orders as well. Customers who dine in can help themselves with bottles of salsa with different level of hotness... I tried the Triple X salsa, it was very good and talk about HOT! I settled for the least hot salsa because the flavors of everything in each of our dish were wonderful already. I am very happy to have La Taquiza as my 100th review of 2013 - it definitely deserves it!!! I've been back twice in a two week period and had the Tinga Torta both times because it is just that damn good. Tinga is freshly shredded chicken breast with spicy chipotle and with garlic, onion, and tomato- phenomenally good - the perfect amount of spicy to your meal. The torta bread is also freshly baked and soft, exactly what you would want in a meal. My fiance had the tacos the first time around and the Chicken Torta on his second try and agrees with me on it being one of the best Mexican meals around. Somehow, on our first hungover visit, we missed the fact that it had a Smoothie Bar, so this time, I got a delicious chocolate banana smoothie and he got the Papaya which is exactly what I will get next time - the perfect taste and flavor. The lady working there is incredibly friendly, and when we were there the first time around, she was so nice and went over the menu and told us a little bit about everything. I highly recommend to make your way to this place. It's off of Shermer in a strip mall that I've never noticed before. There was a train wreck a couple years ago and the road near the restaurant has been blocked off, so I am sure this place gets missed by many. Simple, no frills place with authentic Mexican offerings--- tacos, tortas, or burritos with your choice of carne asada, chicken, or tinga. I loved the sign that asks patrons to be brave and eat the "real Mexican way" and too not be high maintenance by asking for substitutions as it will change the flavor of the original creation. I opted for three different types of tacos with tinga being my favorite - bold, flavorful, and had a nice spivey kick to it. The chicken was bland in my opinion and needed help from the hot sauce. Hubby had the bomba burrito and really enjoyed it. It was a no brainer to have the Horchata to wash all of it down! I'm writing a follow up to my ROTD to describe a bit more of the magic that is La Taquiza!! Choose your meat (or veggies) on a taco, torta or burrito: La Bomba- The "Party in your mouth" as they refer to :) Pork, Ham, Chorizo & Pineapple is such a unique combination of flavors!!! So unique and delicious!!! The pineapple sweetness really brings all the flavors together. Steak- Solid, never chewy or fatty, they do it up right here. Tinga- Shredded Chicken with smokey chipotle flavors...definitely has a spicy kick to it. They are also putting in a JUICE Bar in the restaurant as well. I have yet to try it as they are still about a week away, but they look like they are using all fresh ingredients and a juicing machine, which is definitely the way to go. I love juicing for health reasons alone, so this is a great way to put some good nutrients into your body before indulging in a little bit of sinful bliss. read more

I love me Some Mexican food!!! I'm so happy I discovered this little gem. The location isn't very big, probably has a whole 13 tables inside and the menu doesn't have a lot of options. I liked that the kitchen was fully open. You can see everyone cooking and packaging sauce Containers together. I decided to be adventitious and try their special; toro. I had the option of selecting my meat so I went with the shredded chicken breast. They keep their sauces in the fridge and you can pick which one you'd like to use. It took a bit for my food to be made, which is understandable since they were busy for lunch. Wow. Was this amazing. I'm not into bread or sand which type things, but this was delicious!! It's served between two pieces of bread with lettuce tomato and guacamole. It's def a messy meal but well worth while! By the time I finished the first half I was pretty content, but couldn't leave the second one behind. I grabbed a fork and just ate he chicken. The flavor was amazing! For a girl who doesn't like Mexican food all that much, this place is pretty good. Anyway, my co-worker and I came here after seeing good reviews on yelp and the 15% off for checking in so we decided this was the place for lunch that day. We each got the special for that day which was 3 tacos - chicken, steak, and chorizo - with rice and beans. We also ordered some chips and salsa. The chips were pretty standard but the salsa had quite a kick to it and was quite flavorful. I was expecting a similar pop of spice and flavor when our tacos came out. I was sort of disappointed because the flavors fell flat against the salsa. There was plenty of meat in each of the tacos but it was pretty standard as far as taste goes. The steak taco tasted the best out of the 3 with the chicken being my least favorite. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal by any means. The restaurant was really clean and the workers were really friendly and helpful. Tacos, a-ok: Flavor good, meat quality so-so, tortillas excellent. Asada is the best but bomba is nice too. Tortas, meh: Roll good, toppings lackluster; sandwich very messy. Guacamole, a-ok: Very fresh, but lacks zing; could use some more onions and chiles. Chips, unorthodox: They serve a thinner white corn chip; they're okay but I prefer the standard kind. Salsas, a-ok: The verde is good and the red is decent. Prices are great here for the north suburbs, $2.25 per taco. They have daily specials, such as Wednesday's Taco Trio ($7 for three tacos plus beans and rice) and Tuesday's One-Dollar Tacos. It gets pretty darn busy around here on Tuesdays. Bottled and canned drinks only, but they do have a recycling bin, so kudos for that. read more

Instead of nice full bellies, my husband and I had sad and uncomfortable tummy aches. My kids did not eat all of their tortas asadas (steak) so maybe that was a sign? However my husband and I finished our torta tinga (chicken) and burrito asada and we felt terrible after our meal and even through the next day. We called our order in and picked it up after 10-15 minutes. Our food was ready and there was no wait around early dinner time on Saturday evening. The restaurant is in a strip mall so parking may be limited but we didn't have any issues. There is some seating and we saw like 4 people dining in when we went to pick up the food. I was expecting the usual fast food Mexican burritos and tortas like I used to get back in the days at Allende's in Lincoln Park/Lombard or even Burrito Beach but was very disappointed with this joint. I tried the burrito asada and didn't find much meat but lots of flour tortilla, lettuce and beans. Everything to me tasted like mush and there was really no substance to it. The red and green salsas made it much tastier so thank goodness for that! I tried some of my kids' torta asadas and felt there was more meat but again it still felt like mush and the bread wasn't even toasted well. Yes, I know we did carry out so of course the food won't be as good as getting it right off the grill but it shouldn't like how we had it. My husband didn't say much about his torta tinga so I'm assuming he was in the same boat as me and the kiddos. They do accept credit cards which was a plus but that was prolly the highlight of my experience and I'm so glad I had that 25% off Yelp check in discount. Amazing is just one of the adjectives that I use for this restaurant. Every item on the menu is made from scratch and I can tell the recipes are authentic and from the heart. I stumbled upon La Taquiza by accident and boy what a great surprise! I found out that the name means "Taco Party" and what a celebration for my taste buds!! Pretty good Mexican food in town. La Bomba tacos are good - chorizo, pork, ham, and PINEAPPLE to give it a nice sweet tang. Others like Steak and Tinga are yummy, too. Chicken isn't dry in Tinga - made with spicy chipotle that kinda gives it a nice smoky flavor. The rice usually tastes freshly made, the refried beans are a bit more watery than I would like, but still good topped with some fresh cheese. They also recycle grocery bags for take-out, which is cool, so bring your own from home or don't be surprised if you get your lunch packed in a Jewel grocery bag. Helping to save to environment, after all. All-in-all, they have a customer for life with me. It's not easy to find good Mexican food in this part of town. My advice to them would be to work on consistency, because sometimes the quality is great, other days just ok (last time I went, rice was a little dry/unfresh. The perfect Burrito (I'd say--matter of opinion acknowledged) is found on north Halsted, west side of the street, south of Diversey. They spice their chicken and crisp the tortilla as they fold it. We wandered in on a cold Monday (sorry, we all know it's cold). This restaurant is set up for takeout with about 10 tables for those who might want to stay and eat. On the Amigo/friendly scale, they are right up there. The woman taking our order was welcoming and explained the menu (chalkboard listing). Later she offered a generous sample of rice pudding--tasty, sweet. The décor is simple but stylish. Kahlo pictures hang on the colorful walls. (Thankfully there is no television, instead music). There is an open kitchen area and the workers were relaxed, laughing while getting orders filled. The menu is limited, don't expect to find enchiladas or other traditional dishes. Tacos, burritos and tortas here. I ordered the chicken burrito and my partner ordered steak tacos. The burrito was loaded with fresh, properly cooked chicken. A few beans, some cheese and lettuce--chicken was the main item. A good burrito. The 'steak' tacos were more ground beef and our order of guac was showing the results of being pre-made on a slow day. Not as fresh as they are aiming for. This is a place where you beat the fast food restaurants with food that is served fast and offers a real bargain. We went for lunch menu states Carne asada (grilled skirt steak) we each ordered two carne asada tacos when we received our tacos. We did not enjoy them it was definitely not grill skirt steak it was a very cheap cut of meat. They were disgusting! Horchata was very warm asked for ice they stated they had no ice. Food was great and I like that there are good specials! We got the Mexican street corn in a cup (elotes) - really good! The regular torta (there is a giant one) was delicious and huge! I can't image how big the giant one is. I got the tinga filling, which is shredded chipotle chicken, and it was amazing - very juicy and great flavor. It almost tastes like barbecue. The bomba filling (chorizo, pineapple, and ham, I think) is pretty good but not as juicy. One thing is that the food doesn't come with chips in the side like some places. We didn't buy them but noticed they had just bagged chips on the shelves, so it doesn't seem like they are homemade - maybe ask in case I'm mistaken. I've made a few trips to La Taquiza over the past few weeks and I've not been let down yet. Since my move from Texas, I've been on a mad hunt for quality Mexican food. I've been disappointed more times than not. I've found places that could at least fulfill the craving. But not until I had walked through the humble doors of La Taquiza have I truly felt back home. The restaurant is a small quaint little spot with colorful walls, lined booths and carefully placed tables. You're met by an always friendly cashier who seems to have an answer to any question you could possibly have in regards to their menu. To this point, I've tried their steak burrito bowl and their steak, tinga and bomba tacos. Each time, I've been beyond satisfied. Their steak is my favorite thus far but I can easily understand the infatuation people seem to have with their Tinga dishes. They host an ever so popular Taco Tuesday each Tuesday in which they discount their prices on Tacos to $1. Note, they do have a $5 limit on credit/debit cards, so bring cash or an empty stomach. There isn't a whole lot more to say. They make great food, with a competitive price and a smile on their face.
