Driving back to jersey from Ocean City, we stopped at this gem to eat on our long drive back. Wow, we were completely surprised. Delicious! Everything is absolutely delicious, from the chips and salsa we got, to the guacamole, and then our dinners were great! I got the pollo asado (grilled chicken) it came with rice, beans, and tortillas: the chicken was juicy and was flavored just right. Others at the table had fish tacos, the Texas fajitas, and beef tacos with rice and beans: there was not a full plate left, everything was scraped clean. We showed up for a birthday, 15 of us, on a weeknight. They were very accommodating, got us seated, and made sure we had chips and salsa while we contemplated the menu. Was trying to enjoy a nice evening out with husband. We got seated and our waiter came to us and took our drink order. We received our drinks and placed our appetizer order. We never seen our waiter again to take our dinner order. 10 mins go by..20 mins go by.. no waiter. We got up to pay our bill..we finally see our waiter running to the register. Questionable food, sloppily served. In town for a tournament, tried based o. The reviews but was disappointed. Flavor was bland and didn't feel fresh. Drinks were of the mix quality. Beer seemed flat. Took what is usually a fun food experience and let the air out of the balloon. Guacamole dip was soft light green, seemed cut with something besides guac. On the upside its prices are low. So if I lower expectations based on price, it's an ok place. But there's a level of disappointment that the savings won't make up for. read more

We have been looking for authentic Mexican food since we moved to the Eastern Shore over a year ago. We stooped at La Tonelteca on a Sunday afternoon. it was not crowded and we were seated promptly. It is very colorful in the restaurant. The chairs and tables are all painted bright colors. it just felt like a Mexican restaurant. My wife had the Enchiladas Mexicanas, which consisted of shredded chicken, cheese, enchilada sauce, tomatoes, lettuce and sour cream. Rice and beans were included. She thoroughly enjoyed it.. I ordered the Del Mar Enchilada (great name for an enchilada) which included plenty of grilled shrimp with onions and tomatoes. The shrimp were not overcooked and covered with cheese, green sauce, lettuce, guacamole and sour cream. At my request, our server substituted refried beans (good!) for the rice. Portions were big and were a good value for the money. It was the best Mexican we have found in the area. We plan to return soon. read more

Exceeded my expectations! Actually pretty decent Mexican food in the middle of nowhere Delaware. I believe this is a chain as I've seen one of these is Dover via Route 1 as well. The chimichanga is pretty good with beef burrito (actual slices of steak and not mystery meat). They have really reasonable $6 lunch specials all week long. Guac is fresh and yummy. The fish taco (the waiter recommended grilled tilapia) was a miss but overall a positive experience. Service is friendly as attentive. read more

Ok so what you don't do as a server or a restaurants is bring someone who asked for a side of sour cream and guacamole 2 bowls full of it then charge them $3.99 just for the guacamole. That is sneaky and unprofessional. If someone asks for a side just to go with their meal and you plan on charging them $3.99 for them, then you should definitely make the customer aware of this prior to charging them a ridiculous amount and being sneaky. Oh and on a side note, the food sucked! Don't go here people! When you go to a Mexican restaurant and they can't even get the queso right, it's a bad sign. Then the really sucky part is that the guacamole they charged me $3.99 for sucked as well! I give five star reviews all the time so I am not a person that loves to complain. I just call it as I see it and I see no visits to this place ever again in my future! Omg. What a gem!! I'm visiting from out of town and am always skeptical about Mexican restaurants. (I'm of Mexican descent) They would have gotten a perfect score if the decor was better. Get past that and you have fabulous authentic cuisine. Had the carnitas. Tender juicy and hot. Occasionally I have had them at other places and they can be dry. Not these. Hot tender just the right amount of juicy!! My husband had the fish tacos and he said they were spectacular. Portions were generous but not over the top. Wish I lived here. As a local, this is one of the best local places to eat! Always crowded, great atmosphere, clean, great staff, and awesome food! My favorite is the fajita platter, we have tried many items from the menu...but seriously never had a bad meal here. Great margaritas too! La Tonalteca is one of my daughter and mine favorite restaurant. Ambieance is gorgeous with their handcrafted decor and service is excellent. Love their seafood mexican dish and margueritas are the best. Every time we want to treat ourselves this is the place to go. Mariachi night is so much fun. I took my mother, grandmother & aunts to dinner for Mother's Day. While my food was delicious, the service was poor. The lady checked on us only once, and we had to call her over for her to come to our table. My grandmother asked for the Texas fajita without peppers because she is allergic to them. her meal came with peppers and they charged her for her second one without peppers, even though they simply picked them out, because she came across a few still while eating. They charged me for 3 things I did not order. The server did not deserve the 20$ tip I was set on giving, so I gave it to the busperson, as she deserved it more than the server. read more

We so take for granted the decorative garishness of our everyday lives but this place made me stop and appreciate the work put into the aesthetics for the first time in a long time. Great setting. The service was top notch, when dealing with 3 sunburnt beach goers and a 4 year old who is not on his best behavior; Andrea (remember the name, she's awesome) was fast, attentive and available. I was there last evening for dinner around 6pm, the restaurant was crowded but we were seated immediately. I asked the server if the chips/salsa were still complementary and he said yes. When he brought them to us, I asked for small plates and a spoon. He looked at me puzzled and asked why? I was a little taken back since it is an app. and I was sharing it with my table. I feel it is polite in my book to spoon some salsa on your plate and let others do the same so we are all not reaching at the same time. We order margarita and asked for salt on the rim. Again he looked at me puzzled and repeated SALT? I said yes around the rim (and use a the visual cue) He said okay. I don't think he understood English. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas # 202 from the menu and the server kept questioning me chicken or beef after I repeatedly told him twice that I would like the chicken. With this place being called an Authentic Mexican place, my opinion is not starting out well. I asked if I could substitute the pinto beans with black beans and he said no. When the chicken fajitas arrived at the table the chicken looked dry, oven cooked. It was loaded w/ green peppers and onions all over it. Where were the TOMATOES that was described on the menu? Was really looking forward to a great meal. The pinto beans on the side looked like mush. Had heard really good things about the rest., the food and their great margaritas!
