Had the Texas fajitas, with extra beef. It was a bit bland. Poor service and one of the staff (girl, Michella) was rude. They try to extra charge us. We ask for chicken enhillida with only cheese. They brought out with everything on it (lettuce, tomatoes, which we specifically specify not to put in). So, without the tomato and lettuce, they would chge extra? They did not come over to see everything was either. Really bad service...and we were the only one in the restaurant. read more

Horrible food, horrible service! Average margaritas. The hostess barely noticed us walk in as she cleaned menus, and one of our menus had smashed chips in it. The waiter acted like he was in a huge rush, when they were barely half full. He wasn't helpful with choosing which margaritas we wanted to order. The appetizer came with the meal. The quality of the ingredients was poor! We chose the patio and what a mistake. The heavy metal furniture was dragged across the floor repeatedly as we were waiting for out food. Great prices, fast service, clean, delicious food. We pretty much get the texas fajitas which is chicken/steak/shrimp. I get a beer, Modelo, and we enjoy the meal. I got the nachos last time and they were great as well. Our favorite restaurant to go to at the beach, good food, well priced, quick efficient service. Great for large crowds or just you and me. The service is always very quick, prices are reasonable and ambience is very southwestern. I have visited many times and have enjoyed each visit. For just a few dollars more you get a decent sit down meal and much better quality food than Taco Bell. I gave it three stars instead of five because while the food is good-- beware of the loads of saucy type foods they place on top of your plate of food. At times I felt like I was eating a bowl of soup with burritos underneath all the sauce. You may want to ask that the stuff that is normally on top of the meal to be placed as a side. This appears to be the same place as the "La Tonalteca", listed at the exact same address. I had a terrible experience here (see other review). The bland, runny salsa was from a jar, the flimsy chips from a chip warmer, and my entree, carnitas, a supposedly popular item, was improperly cooked and more fat than meat. The staff seems quite capable, but the food is absolutely awful. I don't understand the other reviews - this place has the worst mexican food I've ever had. It doesn't even seem like the same establishment. Perhaps it has changed hands? Anyway, have to warn people away from this place. Really bad. read more

Man, I love me some La Tolteca. It's a chain, probably expanded beyond Delaware but I've only seen it at several locations in DE. I think been to all of them.. several times. I like the one in Rehoboth, as it's a nice location about 10 minutes from the business of the boardwalk. Which to me, means plenty of parking, and cheap prices! Service is also super laid back, as another reviewer said. But they're also very nice and patient with me as I take hours to decide on my meal, and my server in particular was very personable as well. I loved the review that described the restaurant as looking like a former Pizza Hut - so true. But that also means it has an open layout, making it great for groups and families. They also have an open bar, but I've never drank at this particular location so I can't comment on that. La Toltecas in general all have great food. Not fancy food; tasty food. It's not very creative at all, but I've never ever had a dish that I didn't like. Everything from enchiladas, burritos, really like their chiles rellenos and chimichangas. What's weird is that my favorite is probably one of their "speedy lunches" (a section on their menu that's like a lunch combo platter, like a Mexican version of a Chinese lunch combo platter - they take about five minutes to come out of the kitchen, and they're all like 6 dollars), scrambled eggs with chorizo. Comes with rice, beans, and fresh corn tortillas. I always get a side of the ranchero sauce that comes with the huevos rancheros. They always give me a funny look, but give it to me anyway. You should try it, soo good. And it's under 6 bucks, you cannot beat it. Or wait, maybe my favorite is their chile rellenos.. or maybe, dammit it's all good. So sad this place wasn't built when I was living here, I would have come in probably every day. read more

It's a strange irony indeed that the best Mexican food I've had outside of Mexico is in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. I hadn't been to Tonalteca in 10 years, and after eating there today I'm deliriously happy to report that it's just as good as I remember it from the old days. The waiters still do that thing where they carry 4 or 5 plates on an outstretched arm. I didn't see that anywhere in Mexico on my last trip. But that's just for show. It's the food and drinks that carry the day at Tonalteca. Today I had the enchiladas rancheras which were simply awesome, two cheese stuffed enchiladas smothered with huge chunks of tender pork shoulder and ranchero sauce, served with lettuce, tomato, sour cream, guacamole, and of course perfectly cooked Spanish rice. Not to mention a delicious bowl of tortilla chips and salsa, and the obligatory frozen margarita. I drink mine with sugar instead of salt, but that's beside the point. Although I was so stuffed I could barely move, when my waiter offered me the dessert menu I had to take a peek. Where else can you follow a meal like that with a dessert menu with an average price of $3.50? This is called bang for your buck. I ordered a flan to go, just on principle, then took a quick pic of the dessert menu with my phone, which I'm posting with this review, for you non-believers. Tonalteca is a shining star of excellence in the sad, mediocre sea of half-assed Mexi joints that have invaded America like weeds. read more

My parents and I just stopped in on our way back from the ocean; SO DELICIOUS! I had 2 cheese enchilades and 2 taquitos. Everything was made fresh with good ingredients. I was here couple times and I was always very satisfied with their Margaritas and food but never with their staff. I was there today after a long time with my friend wanted to get a good frozen strawberry margarita. I got my drink and it wasn't frozen, it was melted like it was sitting for an hour outside. I said I'm sorry I don't like it and gave it back because that's not what I wanted and ordered glass of water (which I got after I asked again when I finished my meal) Grilled quesadilla was OK, they just put way too much beans into it so I wasn't really excited about it. And yes haha, the girl server was rude and didn't really care about us she acted like we didn't exist. Finally we asked for a check she put that on table and like a cherry on whipped cream she put a CIRCLE on the 20% of tips. We put the money in and gave it back to her and she just took it and didn't even say have a good night or something, just turned and left. I wish I could give 0 stars. Really authentic Mexican food at crazy-cheap prices served quickly by a courteous staff. The menu is so huge that I recommend thinking about what you're hungry for before you actually look at the menu and then finding it on there. Tried this place based on other Yelp reviews. Glad we did. The portions were more than generous. The pork is amazing. Everything was tasty. I have never had an issue with meals here. The service has always been fast, the margaritas are very good, and the food has never been a disappointment. Are there better or "more authentic" Mexican restaurants? Yep, there probably are. Went here this week for the first time in a little day trip. I wasn't into Mexican until I saw a 3.99 Wednesday margarita lime special! The Drink size was big ,portions are a good size. They Didn't have a good vegetarian selection kinda had to make my own selection because I was not paying $13 for a dish full of veggies and cheese. We ran in for a late lunch/ early dinner. Our waitress was not very attentive. We sat for 10 minutes before she came over and just asked for our order before even getting us drinks. We were in the mood for some good Mexican food. Previously we had eaten at La Tolteca in Wilmington and here at La Tonalteca in Rehoboth with good experiences. This time, not so good. Started with Guacamole Dip and Cheese Dip apps. Chips were thin and good, cheese dip was thin, very thin but good flavor. The Guacamole was pureed smooth, no signs of jalapeno, onion or tomato, definitely not hand made. My 1st Margarita was terrible. Tasted like a store bought margarita mix was used, green lime, not even lime juice with sour mix. I asked for another but with fresh lime and agave, very good. For entrees my gf had a burrito and beef taco. Both were ok, not the best, not the worst. I had chiles rellenos, tamale, cheese enchilada, beef taco and an order of chiles toreados. The chiles toreados was the highlight, nice . Everything else was mediocre at best. There was almost not filling in the tamale, the chile rellenos was bland. The cheese enchilada was ok as well as the beef taco. Not the best, not the worst. The tamale, rellenos and enchilada all had the same sauce which was very salty and ok in flavor. Service was average. Definitely will cross of this and the other related restaurants off our list. read more

Really-.50 cents if you want ice in your drink??? Really sloppy presentation and ordered the Carne Asada which was described on the menu as marinated. This "steak" never saw marinade and what was actually received was a tough, chewy piece of 75% fat on my plate. The waitress was embarrassed and gave me half off the meal when she saw this big blob of fat in my plate. Yuck- I will never return!!! Had what I can only describe as the worst dining experience ever. Went dining with five others. All ordered food, five of six dinners arrive by runners, then server returns to ask if we need anything else not noticing that the sixth dinner has never arrived. Rushes off to kitchen to put in order never telling us that server never put in ticket, never to be seen again. Ask bus person to send manager over who says after all other dinners are finished "obviously you won't have to pay for it". I said I would hope not since it never arrived. He then said can I get you anything. We ask for refills of drinks that have been sitting empty the whole time server was MIA. On check out Manager argues with person paying tab and threatening to call the police. Will never return. Horrible experience. read more

We waited for an hour for carryout food that we were told would take 15 minutes by the very snippy and extremely unhelpful hostess. We were missing an entire meal, which we couldnt figure out until we got home due to the strange way everything was packaged, and for the piece de resistance, (or dessert?), I found a black hair in my rice. I've been to most of the Mexican restaurants from here to Salisbury, MD. This one is my favorite. Best rice, best salsa, best beans, best enchiladas, best quesadillas. My family and I ate here as one of our nights out on vacation. While it's not the worst meal I've had, I am disappointed and ultimately wish we had picked a different restaurant. We decided to sit on the patio, which was very loud between the heavy furniture being dragged across the ground when people got up or shifted and noise from cars on the highway right there. The salsa tasted good but was difficult to eat because it had the consistency of soup. I ordered a strawberry margarita and it came with an orange slice garnish which I found strange. It was good though. I ordered the carne asada and should have realized that cut of meat I would end up with since it is $2-$3 cheaper than other steak entrees and the cut of meat isn't specified on the menu. What I was able to eat was okay, but there was so much fat. I'm talking huge sections that I don't think anyone would want to eat. The quality of meat used in this dish is poor. I could have easily made it better myself. Stick with chicken - both of my parents had chicken entrees they enjoyed. My husband ordered 3 chicken soft tacos. The description on the menu says, "Flour tortilla stuffed with chicken, lettuce and shredded cheese", however he found a huge chunk of tomato in one of the tacos. The waitress said it's in the marinade they use for the chicken. I told her they need to specify that in the menu because there are some people (like one of our friends) who are very allergic to tomatoes. She either didn't understand what I said or didn't care because she didn't respond. There was also green pepper in it, another ingredient not specified in the menu. Her service was poor - never asked how everything was, didn't apologize about the tomato, never asked if we wanted dessert - she brought the check out and I had to tell her we weren't finished! The sopapillas were good I'll say. We like to try new places on vacation, so we probably wouldn't come back here even if we did really like it, but this is definitely on the "not again" list. You can find much better restaurants in the area. They need to have better service, invest in better quality ingredients, and change up their patio furniture so it's not so noisy when moved. read more

Our waiter was great and the food was okay, didn't really enjoy it enough to want to finish it. My fiance however loved her chicken tacos, which is surprising for her..
