La Trat is our favorite Italian restaurant in key west!! I usually sit in the back bar at Virgilio's, but sometimes we'll dine inside when Virgilio's is too crowded and we really want pasta. I love how you can order half portions of the pasta for half the price if you are half hungry. It's my husband's favorite Bolognese on the island. It's both our favorites chicken marsala anywhere we've ever had in our life! Seriously, try the marsala It's ridiculously amazing. I also love the Gorgonzola gnocchi, the Romana pasta, and the Norma pasta. But I always get my Norma with penne instead :) Also, the Caesar salad is one of the best on the island, They actually give you real anchovies! The cannelloni is also delicious. For dessert, they have the best tiramisu that my husband or I have ever eaten! It's so perfectly light and fluffy and melts in your mouth. It's the same amazing martini menu as at the back bar, but in bigger martini glasses without the sidecar. During busy season, there can be a wait, but hang tight it's worth it. This restaurant is a tourist trap! Please don't fall into it like what we did. First, the food is mediocre and extremely salty even we requested low salt. What's more sneaky is how they over charge you: first they charge 3% credit card fee, then they let you scan a QR code on the receipt to make an "easy payment", with that you are automatically add a tip that is higher than what they deserve. Overall, we left the restaurant feeling both thirsty and scammed...Please don't waste your money there or let your good mood spoiled by them on your vacation. read more

We came here on a Wednesday evening with reservations made ahead of time. The restaurant is nestled right in the heart of Duval Street. You wouldn't really expect such a great restaurant in this location but that is how Duval works! We arrived a little early so we sat at the bar and enjoyed a glass of wine while we waited for our table. The bartender was super busy but was taking care of everyone as needed. We then moved to our table which was a nice little 2 top nestled in a corner by some wine shelving. The tables have nice white table cloths. The restaurant was super busy so there was plenty of people watching to do around us. Despite being busy, our waiter was informative and friendly. I ordered the Chicken Marsala and my husband had the Linguine with Clams. Both are a favorite that we often order at Italian restaurants. Neither of us were disappointed so that is great! read more

A quaint Italian restaurant in Key West. We were seated by the bay window in the front of the restaurant. It allowed for people watching of the pedestrians. We enjoyed our drinks and meals here. Incredible service. We got seated instantly, and while our seat didn't have a "window beach view", we still could see the ocean. Almost immediately, the server takes our order, brings out drinks, and gives us bread. 15 minutes later, we get our food. I got the gnocchi, and the alfredo sauce was so thick and creamy. One if the best meals we've had in a long time. I suggest reservations. They were doing walk ins but it seemed so much easier with open table reservation. We both started with a Caesar Salad. They also brought out olive oil with a thick balsamic and parmesan to dip bread in. Caesar salad dressing was very good. Husband loved the oil and balsamic. Im not a big fan of any balsamic. Entrees were GNOCCHI al GORGONZOLA Potato dumpling pasta, prepared with a fresh cream sauce and cloves of roasted garlic I added a protein of crumbled sausage. It was fantastic. The cream sauce I could eat with a spoon. PETTI di POLLO OPEN-FACE SALTIMBOCCA Two chicken breasts pan seared and then roasted, topped with proscuitto, fresh mozzarella, fresh arugula, parmigiana cheese, herbed extra virgin olive oil and finished with a balsamic reduction served with roasted potatoes french green beans. Husband loved it. I was full but husband is always ready for dessert especially if it's chocolate. MOUSSE du CHOCOLATE Rich dark mousse is paired with white chocolate mousse and served on a bed of crème anglaise sauce. The mousse was super light and very chocolate. He was super happy. This meal was less than a steak place just down the road ( that we weren't thrilled with ) including tip and a glass of wine. Excellent food and excellent service. We had 6pm reservations for our anniversary and arrived 15 minutes early. The restaurant was empty so we asked if we could be seated and got an attitude. They asked if a "high top" was okay and we said no, we wanted a table and asked if we could sit in the window. We were told to wait at the bar while they cleared a table. Two minutes later we were seated. My husband ordered the chicken parmesan, which was "okay" and I ordered the ravioli and asked for the sauce on the side and was told "that's weird." Hmm, I hate my pasta drenched in sauce, so I like it on the side so I can add it myself. As we were eating, I looked down at the floor and walls they were absolutely filthy. Lost my appetite. The food was okay but not great. The service really lacked professionalism and class. The traffic on the sidewalk was lightly busy, however, to be expected on the main Duvall Rd. Our waiter was smiling and attentive. Took our wine order and we ordered the Bruschetta. We were also given a piece of bread with oil/vinegar/cheese. It was delicious and perfect for two people. After completing the appetizer we ordered dinner - Fettuccine Alfredo and Chicken Parmigiana. The service was normal, the hostess at the front was actually a life saver! I went on open table and made a reservation, not knowing there was a difference between Oceanside and the regular one. She quickly sat us despite my mis hap. We started off with drinks: key lime martini and a lazy porn star. Both solid drinks. We were then served a warm slice of bread with a dish of a mix containing a sweet balsamic glaze, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil. We then ordered the chicken piccata and the bolognese. The chicken piccata was delicious! Very refreshing after a long day of travel and heat. I would recommend the piccata, but order something else along with it because the portion is smaller than you would think. The bolognese you can skip. Total let down. It was a standard meet sauce, with one "special" addition: a ton of grease and oil. I have no clue why there was so much oil in my pasta but it was unsettling to watch while I eat. Also the portion of sauce to noodle was ridiculous. Due to the high amounts of oil the sauce would not grip to the pasta at all, leaving me with an obscene amount of oily meat in my bowl. read more

We had dinner here with 10 people. Overall the meals were good, loved the dipping oil for the bread. Attentive waiter. What we didn't love was the overdose of sun dried tomatoes in many of the pasta dishes. The size of the sun dried tomato pieces were bigger than any other ingredient and anyone with pasta was pushing them to the side to avoid them. I have some great memories here.... over the past 15 years or so, my wife and I have enjoyed many date nights, we've had family dinners, I've eaten solo at the bar and we've even hosted special events here. At some point though, I recall being disappointed enough times to consider other options... before you know it we ended up seeking other places for Italian food... more times than not we ended at Antonias or cooking at the house. After a bit of a hiatus, I began to reminisce about the LASAGNA ALLA BOLOGNESE that La Trattoria serves... Lasagna is not my go-to Italian dish but I tried a bite off my kids plate about 15 years ago and I rarely have ordered anything else here. * * * BACK IN 2021 * * * So last year we returned after a few years going M.I.A. and we returned... but was thoroughly bummed that they sold out of Lasagna. I didn't suffer too much, as we had a great meal... my wife enjoyed their PESCE LOCALE (Hogfish with a cream sauce) and I ordered their SPAGHETTI ALLA BOLOGNESE (mostly because its the same sauce as the Lasagna and I desperately wanted to load up on dipping the bread into the meat sauce). * * * THIS YEAR --- 2022 * * * Don't get me wrong, that meal in 2021 was great (despite the Lasagna not being available)... but that was last year. Now I'm back and I'm ready to get my Lasagna ! We reserved our favorite table, in the corner, by the entrance that over-looks Duval Street. Best seat in the house to see all the people come and go; and of course, the occasional drunkard doing the Duval Krawl. While we perused the menu, we enjoyed our drinks; my wife with her Pinot Grigio and me a BLOODY MARY. They also brought a small plate with extra virgin olive oil with a splash of balsamic vinegar and parmigiana cheese along with a couple small piece of the fresh bread (the waiters bring the bread to the table in a large basket and serve to each customers bread plate). We started off with a SAUTÉ DI COZZE (sautéed mussels in a tomato based white wine and butter broth and some yellow and red peppers)... I'm not sure if the peppers were meant to be cooked; they didn't seem to be and were just shoved out of the way. The sauce was very good and wanted to dip some bread in it... BUT the waiter was not to be seen and I was out of bread. Next we shared a INSALATA DI CESARE (Caesar Salad)... it was drenched in dressing. Again the waiter was not to be seen. I don't like to wave down another waiter but I didn't want this salad just sitting here. The other waiter took it away. We finished our drinks... I'm thirsty and tired of staring at empty glasses. The waiter is again, not to be seen.... My wife got the ZUPPA DI PESCE for her main dish... their Zuppa De Pesce is more of a traditional seafood-fish stew and they serve it over rice (but it's more of rice under the soup); personally, I like it but I think my wife would've preferred the style of the seafood over pasta with a Fra Diavolo sauce. I got the Lasagna.... (INSERT SARCASTIC LAUGHTER) ! Again, it was SOLD OUT ! I understand, Lasagna may be in high demand but this was early in the evening; to be sold out again is just bad preparation on their part. I ended up having the PETTI DI POLLO OPEN-FACE SALTIMBOCCA... I don't want to say it was bad but in hindsight, I should've ordered dishes that I know are good here (such as their Gamberi Alla Provenzale E Aragosta or the Ossobuco). At least I enjoyed an amazing martini with my dinner... SOUR APPLE MARTINI. La Trattoria offers many creative martini's; all of the ones I've tried over the years have been amazing. In lieu of dessert, my wife and I sat watching the street and enjoyed another round of drinks... more wine for the wife and another martini for myself; this time I got the LAZY PORN STAR. I'd be lying if I didn't admit the name affected my decision to order this one but what a great decision (vanilla vodka, passion fruit purée, lime and prosecco). * * * BOTTOM LINE * * * I've had many special visits over the years but in the end, I just don't know if I'll be back anytime soon.... our waiter was nice but he was mysteriously missing throughout the meal (not even seen assisting other tables, so we couldn't even flag him down)... and the Lasagna; I guess if I did return, I would definitely call in advance to verify the Lasagna availability (when it's available, it is delicious). read more

Went in for dinner with my wife. Sat at the bar. Bartender told us that where we were sitting we may be in the way of some of the table surrounding the bar. And if that happened, we may have to move. I don't understand why any restaurant would allow bar seats in a position to infringe upon other people's dining and that they would force you to move even though you're sad. She was extremely rude and very hostile. I don't know why anyone would be OK with being treated this way as they eat there. read more

We stopped in on a Monday evening at around 5:30 without a reservation and seating was no problem. Our waiter was very good. We both had the yellow tail snapper special and it was very good. It was a seafood stuffing wrapped in a yellow tail filet and then topped with lobster bisque. The sides were angel hair pasta with fresh garlic cloves and sun dried tomatoes on angel hair pasta and green beans. We will definitely return. read more

I used to visit often with my husband and one of my sons and have great memories of dinners here; like special event dinners during Fantasy Fest and gatherings with friends and family. Now we've returned for dinner and it was not great. The good thing was the restaurant was able to reserve my favorite table. We ordered drinks as soon as we sat and they were very good but after that the service fell apart and every time we needed anything our server was missing. We shared an appetizer of mussels which was tasty and we had a caesar salad but it was drenched in dressing and could not get past the first bite. My husband always loved their lasagna but it's always sold out, so of course he wasn't able to get it again. I forget what he got but I remember him not being all that impressed. I had their zuppa de pesce but I didn't love it. It tasted good but I didn't read the description and it was more of a soup with rice (my fault, not theirs). Disappointing experience. Our friends ordered clam linguine which he said was average overall. Our next guest ordered tortellini with sausage was good but the sausage was burnt. My husband and I ordered the lasagna and were told it was large enough to split. We had to wait at least 30 minutes for the fresh made lasagna but when it arrived it was cold and barely enough to split. Fortunately we had ordered a salad and were able to eat something while our friends ate their meals. After we sent the lasagna back to be remade it, it came back significantly smaller than the original and had just been microwaved. After talking to the assistant manager, he took it off our bill but for our first night here, we are hugely disappointed.. Ambiance was nice and presents itself better than reality. read more
