I love going to this spot for a casual meal in Austin! There's not a lot of parking since it's located at a gas station/convenience store but it's usually not too full. There are three picnic tables with benches to sit and eat at which is nice. Even on busy days the crew gets orders out pretty fast. Their birria grilled cheese is my family's absolute favorite, so so good we get these every time we come by. They recently added al pastor to the menu; however, when we arrived around 4:30pm on a Saturday they were sold out. Lesson learned to try earlier next time! I saw this food truck on Yelp walking distance from my hotel and thought "so many 5 star reviews" so I thought I'd give it a try! it was so good! First I ordered the birria taco with consume and meat for dipping -- it was so delicious (and I had leftover consume) so I decided to get the queso taco too. I was shocked to find out that the queso taco also had meat in it but it was so delicious! When I went to Austin years ago I was not that impressed with the Mexican food here but this spot changed my tune -- certainly better than any taco places in Chicago (where I'm from). They take card. First, they were amazing. Then, they were sold out a lot. Then their trailer closed around June -- by August, I was worried they were closed forever! But... I was still following their IG page. THENNNN today, I saw a "new" birria spot in my IG feed, called "PALO SECO"... unfamiliar name, but the photos looked vaguely familiar. So I took my hangry booty over there & ordered my classic faves (birria/ queso tacos) & added on a birria grilled cheese since I hadn't had one there before! ...but the birria tacos weren't the same as I've grown accustomed... It wasn't brothy, shredded brisket like before. What changed & WHY?!? Weirdly enough, the grilled cheese DID have the traditional shredded brisket I'd been expecting on my tacos. Mmmm & Hmm. Wow. Just wow! Worth the birria hype. Worth the wait. I usually Elite rant before my actual food review. Not here. The beef birria is so good. Period! The flavors are just there. It's got some heat and tang, but nothing overpowering. Just a delicious blend of the right kind of Mexican love. The consomé is so darn tasty with a hint of familiar flavors for those that might know them. Like a delicious blend of menudo broth and pozole broth with its own distinct spices. The tacos were so good just as served. The flavors are already in the meat and broth used to dip the tortillas in. With their salsas and lime, they just exploded in my mouth! I was making love sounds during my lone picnic in the park. The queso taco was a last minute addition responsible for the majority of those sounds! Do yourself a favor and get one of those too. They accept credit card, Apple Pay and cash. I ordered birria and queso tacos. Both meat had a ton of flavor but was on the drier side. One of the easiest five stars I've given! Probably could try anything on the menu and you'd be happy .. definitely try the birria tacos.. both the mulitas and quesadillas were amazing, too. As I am still on the hunt to find the best tacos in Austin, La Tunita 512, came across my search as it was close to one of my work locations. La Tunita 512, is a food truck, right along side a gas station. It's a nice & quaint area. They have patio tables & shaded seating! I ordered three of their Queso birria tacos & consume, with extra onions & cilantro on the tacos and in the consume. I spent around $13 dollars total without the tip. Unless they have different togo packaging in the future, this is an eatery you'd have a better time eating there rather than taking it togo. They placed the tacos in a taco plate & wrapped it in a plastic film to cover it. This wasn't a huge problem, but I was eating on the go and the plate wasn't substantial enough to hold the tacos. This resulted in the plate semi-falling apart. These were BIG birrira tacos. They are the size birrira tacos that I'm used to receiving back home in California. I added their red salsa and lime to the first taco and took a dip into the consume... WOAH was all I could say. The first bite was quite literally an explosion of flavor in my mouth. I was not expecting it to be that juicy (this IS a good thing). I was also surprised by how crispy the tacos shells stayed! I was driving for about 20 minutes before I could actually park and eat the tacos. La Tunita 512 definitely has some of the best, If not the best birrira tacos that I've had since I moved to texas. After staring at their IG feed for months, finally got myself over to this truck-next-to-a-gas-station. It would be somewhat easy to miss if it weren't for the fact that it's so damn popular: lots of people standing around (but socially distanced of course), and you've never seen so many cars in a gas station. In other words, get there early. I ordered four quesotacos and two birria consommés. Took almost 40 minutes to finally get my order. Ate one quesotaco and one birria consommé then and there to make sure I got a taste of everything fresh. The tortilla and the edge of the cheese both have a great crisp to it. The quesotaco is definitely a feature to try but it's a LOT, and very greasy. Delicious but I probably wouldn't get through two in a sitting. If you haven't been here before, I would recommend one quesotaco and one regular birria taco. The consommé was FANTASTIC! This really blew me away. Flavor was incredible but also there was SO MUCH meat! I was expecting just a little bit of meat, but it was well loaded up with super tender melty beef. I still struggle to understand the birria craze as I've usually found them too dry in the several times and shops I've ordered them from. La Tunita's the first time I've had good birria, and it's all thanks to its big, beefy consommé. Poured over the taco, the consommé elevates the birria into something that is far more tasty and desirable, especially when paired with the crispy and snappy tortila. (The corn tortillas are among the better ones I've had here in ATX) Poured into the ramen, the consommé transforms the cup of instant ramen into a big beefy broth of nooodles. That said, it can't do anything about the nature of the instant noodles and the telltale notes of the instant noodles' seasoning packet that are still present in the broth. So it's not great ramen, it's a decent one with really good broth. As for the other items, the mulita was really terrific. I don't usually get quesotacos, but the combination of the birria, cheese, and the terrific tortillas pressed together really worked well. The al pastor was solid, but I think the birria is the one to get, provided you order the consommé and/or mulita. I was as (un)fortunate to go on a chilly, wet, windy Saturday morning, which meant that there was no line. Service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were reasonable, especially in light of certain shops increasing their already high prices by another 20-30%. Much like how amazing pho begins with an authentic broth that's made with care; so to are amazing birria tacos firstly determined by the consumé that they are served with. This broth/consumé is teeming with flavor and spice, and it truly gives me a "chicken soup on a cold day" feeling that just can't be emulated easily. The meat is also incredibly tender, and the way that they fry the cheese to act as an extra shell within the main shell puts these tacos (at just $3 a piece) above and beyond any other competitor. Their ramen, grilled cheese, and especially "pizza style" quesadilla are all also at the very same level if not higher than their birria & queso tacos. After staring at their IG page for months.. finally got to visit the place and see what all the hub bub was about. Location: It is a stand that shares its lot with a gas station. It has a few benches that you can sit at, but It does tend to get busy, so you may have to eat in your car, or take home. Food: Birria has gotten pretty popular over the past few months. For those who have never had it, think French Dip, but taco style. The dip is called Consume. And this place offers this broth, with or without meat. If you are comfortable sharing during these times, I'd just share one consume (the broth you dip your taco in). Or see if you can ask for an extra cup. Or bring one! Food looked beautiful and tasted good. We ordered the birria tacos, the quesotacos, and the consume without meat. Food came in a nice Togo box, where you can rip off the lid and use as a plate. I hate it when my Togo orders have one measly sauce packet, or one dry lime in it. But la tunita did an excellent job making sure I had plenty of salsa and limes! Be sure to grab some paper towels before you leave. Though the food is pretty, it can be messy. So def get some napkins, or bring an extra stash for your car. All in all- good. Good flavor, but the taco shells were dripping in grease... but might make a good hangover food. Tips on Ordering: Their IG and Yelp say you can order via their square site, but the site did not work for me at the time. I can probably see why, since they were pretty busy and consistent as far as I saw. If you decide to order in person, the earlier the better. Brought my parents here to try the birria tacos while they were in town, and my mom kept saying "Man, those tacos were good!" for a day and a half after we ate. I definitely have to agree! Prices are incredible for what you get as well. Everything was delicious, from the incredibly tender, juicy beef to the fried tortillas to the consumme. I honestly can't think of anything I would have changed. Just absolute perfection. We each got one with and one without cheese... In future, I'd go without cheese on the birria taco, and get one plain cheese taco. The cheese was fabulous, but it kind of competed with the birria taste, so I feel like each would be better on its own.
