I know this place has stellar ratings but I was very unhappy with my experience yesterday. First let me say that I have been going to a different dentist for a few years that I was happy with, but that they stopped taking our insurance and we decided to move to a cash basis. Since we were paying cash I decided to try a Ladera office since I prefer to support Ladera businesses and they are closer than my prior dentist. I did extensive research and picked Ladera Dentistry due to the high reviews, good price point for yearly cleaning VIP plan, and even personal recommendation. Let me also say that I brush and floss very regularly. Hadn't been to the dentist in about 8 months but before then had been very regular. Have no pain and sometimes my gums bleed but usually when they do it's based on my cycle and not a chronic condition. Anyway I had already taken my 10 year old daughter there and had a good experience. But when it came time to take me, my "this is gonna cost me" radar went up right away. First they took a TON of X-rays. Way more than I was comfy with for X-ray exposure. Then they took pictures. Which luckily I didn't see but I've hated this technique in the past because I feel like pictures always make your teeth look bad and therefore making you believe you need extensive work. Then they did a gum check where she poked around and measure my gums which hurt. And made me bleed. And honestly I probably do have some inflammation in my gums but I always wonder about this technique as well because wouldn't anyone's gums bleed and get irritated if you're poking it!? Finally when it came time for an analysis 1 hour later (no cleaning yet mind you which is what I came for) I was told I had 5 cavities, and needed a deep cleaning with laser treatment. I had done the laser before so I knew this was probably true but when it came time to price me out the cleaning/laser was found to cost me nearly $1100!! This is before the cavity work (which mind you my previous dentist never told me I had) and with their VIP discount. I was astounded. I had never been asked to shell out this kind of money for a cleaning. And remind you I didn't come with any pain issues or concern. So I paid the $90 for the exam fee and went home to call my previous dentist for a second opinion (waste of money too as I never got a cleaning!!). I felt bad as I was genuinely hoping to be able to support a Ladera business. But these sales tactics just never rub me the right way. I've given them 3 stars because it is clean and they seem to have a solid customer service plan in place. read more

I moved to Rancho Mission Viejo so I needed to find a dentist closer to me. I had hesitations moving dentists since I went to my prior dentist for 10+ years but I am SO happy I did. Everyone in the office is so nice and professional. The office takes pride in making sure you are comfortable and enjoying your visit. The office makes sure that you understand the work that needs to be done, why and the cost upfront which is so nice because I feel like a lot of dentist offices don't do that. Was excited to support woman owned business in my community. First visit for 3 of us here. One didn't get teeth cleaned at appointment because they proposed an elaborate plan and charges for cleaning work; another had 13 cavities proposed work, and all a $188 charge billed to insurance for castings (?). My father in law is a dentist out of state. He looked at the X-rays and found 1 area that needed attention and 1-2 watch for and no indication on the remaining teeth they quoted. Was there for nearly 2 hours each - they push braces and treatments and mineral toothpastes and crazy price quotes for braces on straight teeth. Very disappointed. Won't be returning. read more

Very friendly staff and nice office. But don't let the free welcome gift and snazzy presentation fool you - they will try to upsell you on costly services you don't need. I went in for a routine checkup and came out being told that I needed to spend thousands for a deep laser cleaning. Even before the hygienist started checking my teeth, she asked if I ever had one done. When they found out I was paying out of pocket, the sales pitch stopped. I ended up scheduling with another local dentist for a second opinion and was told that my teeth & gums were fine. In fact, the second dentist found a small cavity that Ladera Dentistry completely missed - even after the thousand xrays they took. Won't be back! read more

Ladera Dentistry is the best dental office that I have been too. Everyone smiled and greeted me as I came into the office. It was a nice atmosphere to be around. I came in for a check up and they were very thorough with it. They asked me if I wanted to hear everything in detail or just as summary of what my options were. I thought that this was a great thing because some people don't want to hear the whole thing and just go through with whatever they need. For me, I enjoyed the detailed information that was provided. Dr. Mai was awesome. She was very professional and made sure I was taken care of like family. I felt a very genuine vibe from her friendliness. Wanted to wait for the pain to subside before writing this review. I visited this office in December of 2015. This was single handedly the worst dental experience I've ever had. I've had braces, 1 root canal, extractions and veneers. All uncomfortable, sure. They pale in comparison to the "deep cleaning" I was recommended by this used-car-salesman-practice. Let's back up and put some disclosures on here to reduce some biases. I haven't had a cleaning in 3 years. I'm an idiot for that. I floss with floss sticks (not rope-floss from the reel that you wrap around your fingers). It's well known this is sub par. I *needed* a good cleaning. I also floss with these sticks every day and use a sonic toothbrush every day. It's not that I had some rotted out face here guys, I just needed a solid clean. Anyway, It was *HOW* this practice operated that was the problem and the 1-star. Let's also ignore the fact that like 70-80% of these reviews look like they are from friends and family and folks who've only left 1 review (ever) and are people from like *really* far away from Ladera... Super shady, but let's see how the service went: The worst experience I've ever had. After my mouth was injected with 2 (TWO) syringes FULL of lidocaine for a deep clean my face felt heavy and puffy. I was assured this was very normal, but it seemed to be a little much. This felt similar or more than the amount of anesthesia I'd received for an extraction (tooth PULLED!). For a cleaning?! Really? Ok... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ After 45 minutes of lidocaine application I started getting a little restless. This was taking a long time. Slow application of anesthesia prevents capillary injury and soreness I was assured. 45 mins for 4 quadrants? We press on. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Before all of this Dr assured me my teeth would all *surely* fall out within a few years because I had a few 4-5mm pockets. After a bit of research I realized this was just a scare tactic to upsell. Fine. I wanted the deep clean anyway bc I hadn't been in a while. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So, 4-5mm pockets - not great on my hygiene responsibilities, but she talked to me like I was seven years old. She even talked slower when I rebuffed that it seemed a little extreme that I'd have tooth loss in such a short period of time. C'mon dude. Really patronizing and this is why people hate dentists. The pontificating, the swindling, the pain. If people flossed perfectly and brushed perfectly and came every 90 days and didn't eat foods that harmed our mouths you'd be unemployed. Why act so condescending about it? Back to our regularly scheduled program: Mid cleaning the lidocaine application was so strong that my neck muscles started to seize and cramp. This actually happened. Incredibly painful. My entire neck was numb and my muscles were flexing and hyper extending due to the lack of awareness from the anesthesia. My jaw was being held open extremely wide but I had no idea. I couldn't even feel my neck. Horrific. I leaned forward and tried to massage my muscles back into a relaxed state. It took a while but finally the cramps subsided. This really sucked and I was ready to leave at this point. The doctor arrived to ask what was wrong because I was clearly in pain. She suggested that this was "the only way" and that I could end the "treatment" but I was already anesthetized. I said let's just finish. I've been here for 3 hours (we're mid-cleaning gang and on hour 3! wow.). I want to leave, but I stay and finish. The hygienist continued and asked me if I felt her stabbing my gums with the sharp metal tools. I could feel it quite clearly and it hurt. It was terrible. I lied that I felt nothing to avoid another 45 minute lidocaine session. I simply wanted to be cleaned and leave at whatever cost/pain/feeling. So either this was the worst hygienist in the United States that spent almost almost an hour applying lidocaine and I still felt pain or she was offshore drilling into my face with her tool kit. Either way, not great. The staff kept saying they wanted me to be comfortable. I guess that's why they dropped 9 gallons of lidocaine into my face? I've never been so uncomfortable at a dentist's office. Upon the completion of my visit the front desk staff suggested I come back for a 90 day cleaning. Which isn't covered by insurance, of course, (every 6 months is covered and is standard). Since I could barely speak as my tongue was who knows where, I said no. Needless to say I will absolutely never return to this dentist. I highly recommend you avoid it as well. read more

My husband and I just moved to the area when he had severe pain in a tooth that recently was worked on by another dentist out of state. It was Sunday... I called several dentists around the area and left messages (not expecting a call back until Monday) and was surprised and very thankful to receive a call back on a Sunday evening. Not only were they able to squeeze my husband in the next day, they have been super nice and very caring ever since. He has been back three times for additional work. I had only talked to them on the phone until today. I went in for a cleaning after hearing rave reviews from my husband. I was greeted with one of the friendliest smiles you'll ever see. The woman stood and shook my hand. You just don't get that kind of customer service anywhere anymore. The hygienist was absolutely AMAZING. I felt relaxed and well taken care of. Dr. Ly was so sweet. She took her time to explain herself and her way of doing things. I appreciate her conservative approach to dentistry. It's refreshing. The office was so clean and fresh. Not sterile in a bad way. It was very welcoming. I am super happy with my visit. Their X-Ray machine was down, but I received an apology from three different team members and was promised a reschedule as soon as it is up and running. Dr. Ly is one of the best dentists I have ever been to. I was referred to her through a friend of mine to get my wisdom teeth extracted, and because of the smooth and wonderful experience I had with that, she has become my go-to dentist ever since! Whenever I visit the office, which I can say is one of the nicest and cleanest dental offices I've been to, the receptionist happily greets me and asks how my day is going. Everyone that works there is super friendly and personable, and even though many people tend to have a slight fear of going to the dentist, Dr. Ly makes me feel like I'm at home there. She takes the time to make sure I'm feeling okay or if I'm feeling any pain, and she does a thorough job with my teeth every visit. For extractions, fillings, whitening, Invisalign, root canals, anything regarding teeth, she is amazing and will keep you coming back, not just for the great service, but for the wonderful hospitality that the office exudes. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into Dr. Ly's practice. As I was walking into the office, I saw a little girl that just got her teeth worked on and she was actually smiling as she was leaving. When does that ever happen? I knew immediately that I chose a great dentist. This place was, by far, the most clean and luxurious dental office I've EVER been to. It was as if I was going to a high-end spa in Beverly Hills. LCD TV's in every room, brand new chairs/furniture/equipment.... the list goes on. As if the environment wasn't A++, the service I got from both Dr. Ly and her staff was outstanding. They made me feel very calm and relaxed, which never happens during a dental visit. I came in for a cleaning, and Dr. Ly was so attentive and gentle. Felt like I was getting a massage on my teeth/gums. She was very easy to talk to, as she thoroughly explained the procedure and preventative measures to keep my teeth in good shape. There was an issue with my insurance, but the staff was very accommodating and was able to quickly sort everything out with no problems. My 8 yr old son had major tooth pains one day, I called Dr Ly's office and was told to come in right way. I came in and was greeted by a super friendly and professional front office admin. She showed us around the office, it's very nice and clean. There's a large tv to entertain the kids, coffee , tea and water!! Dr Ly was very patient with my son. He asked her tons of question and she responded to all of them without scaring him off. That kind of patience with kids are extremely rare to find. She was willing to wait as long as it took for him to be ready for the procedure. After all was done, my son easily agreed to come back in a few months for another visit!! The entire staff is great!! This is the best dentistry I've ever been to. You should know that this is my first ever Yelp review, and it's one I have been saving to write. Dr. Ly's office is exquisite. You get a great comforting feeling while checking in w/Ana at the front desk. She is just so genuine and bubbly! Dr. Ly is by far the most gentle and thorough dentist I've been to. She has done redactions,extractions, cavity removal, and also my Invisalign! All were done pain-free, quick, and inexpensive. She will not lecture you about the importance of flossing or how often you have to visit, so if you haven't been to a dentist in a long time, don't worry. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I'm sure there are others like me... a grown adult that truly gets nervous when it comes to going to the dentist. I had made an appointment with another dentist for a cleaning, and he did a horrendous job. He was not gentle and rarely communicated with me and it scared the poo out of me. I needed to find a new dentist! Dr. Mai Ly is honestly the best dentist ever! She was gentle, she made sure to communicate with me often during my procedure, and was extremely soothing. She re-cleaned my teeth and I felt no discomfort! Other dentists may nick you at times, but honestly, it didn't happen once with Dr. Mai Ly. We continued to a crown replacement procedure and I was nervous about the numbing shot (because honestly, who isn't) BUT it was completely painless. Her technique was flawless! Although the staff was kind I felt that I was misled and they did not do a good job at all of explaining my benefits/insurance premiums to me. I was not aware that I had a $1,500 deductible and that 1 crown and 1 root canal alone would almost be my entire allowance for the year. It's only March and I'm already capped. Had I known that I would not of gotten a deep cleaning. On top of that they originally told me my cavities would be around $16/each out of pocket through insurance. After I show up to my appointment after taking vacation time from work he said I would have to pay cash and that I would owe almost $500. He knew exactly what he charged my insurance when the appointment was booked. On top of that why did he not call me prior letting me know? It is very difficult for me to get time off work and I would not of wasted my day had I known this was the case. I feel that the authorizer up front who's sole job is to authorize insurance, collect copays, schedule appointments and explain benefits did an extremely poor job and I will not be going there again. read more

They are operating at a higher level, their team is clearly executing in coordination to a larger purpose beyond just making a buck. What does this look like? -hyper focus on customer service from the moment I walked in to the moment I left, everyone I met including the Doc seemed like they were on the exact same page, 100% engaged and dedicated to my visit beginning to end, very warm, and the big standout... authentic about it. -emphasis on asking about and adapting to my preferences as a client (communication style, goals, etc.) -high attention to detail regarding their environment, the procedures Outstanding. I don't remember the last time I went to a business and was this taken aback by top to bottom execution and intent. Cheers to everyone I met.
