Telling you that I had no doubts about my first visit to Ladera Dentistry would be an absolute lie. I'd been going to my regular dentist for over 25 years, recently noticing that he's getting older and that his practice seems out of date. Finding a good dentist is tough. All that 1-800-DENTIST crap, I've never heard of any success stories. So upon research, my friends told me to try Dr. Mai Ly of Ladera Dentistry. Being that I just naturally hate going to the dentist and upon reading the near perfect reviews, I was very skeptical, thinking what's the catch? Answer? There really is NONE. You have to give credit to the service and cleanliness there. They work really hard to keep the business clean and to get you in and out on time. Wasting your time means the patient behind you does the same. Having confirmed my insurance information prior to my visit, they send a text message to remind me of my appointment a few days before. An email arrives showing confirmation of the scheduled time, along with a follow up email asking for my feedback. I feel very comfortable with the scheduling process. Assuming, that I need a cleaning and check-up, Dr. Ly advised that I should consider a deep cleaning instead, since I also had a couple tiny cavities. How does she know? Cause her staff takes several x-rays for each side of my mouth using the very latest in dental technology. She even takes record of my gumline, to ensure that I'm not losing my teeth at an abnormal rate. I can't remember the last time my former dentist did that. Dr. Ly even showed me all my scans and her areas of concern, using the PC to display my teeth on the monitor in front of me. Dr. Ly is very meticulous to detail. Some of you might not like that and that's normal, but I actually prefer it. During my cleaning, she makes sure that every nook, corner, and crevice of my mouth are taken care of. Meaning, she spends generous time ensuring that all my teeth are pearly white, almost as though she's cleaning her own. Call me OCD, but let's get real folks. The human mouth contains hundreds of types of germs and bacteria. Ever look at someone with bad teeth and stains? Some of you people kiss that every single day. GROSS. As a professional who's very observant of what's going on in her office, she spends a good amount of time cleaning my teeth and then asks her colleagues to finish things up. Why? Cause efficiency is crucial, especially in an industry where patients fear going to the dentist, let alone even paying for the cost. I've learned that there's no price tag for your health. So if you're paying out of pocket, go to an average dentist who's going to give you what you pay for. If you have dental insurance, plan ahead, and use it wisely like I do. My total time spent on the chair, a little over an hour. I have to admit that it was almost painless and worthwhile, even though I hate sitting in one place for that long. Also, many studies now show that having good oral hygiene and health is linked to a longer life span. The recommended visit is every 6 months, but unless you floss correctly twice a day, brush your teeth after every meal, and do this process each morning, day, and night - you probably might want to come back sooner than later. I've had to train myself to do that, cause I like my teeth and I want to keep them till Father Time beckons. I'm really not into the whole denture thing. The staff at Ladera Dentistry has this thing about trying to keep the patient pain free while being treated. They warn me ahead of time, if they know it's going to be a bit uncomfortable. I might have been be a little out of it from the novocaine, but I can't remember how many times the staff asks me, "Are you OK?" I feel obliged to respond, "Yes, are you OK?" That must have went back and forth at least a handful of times while I was sitting there. Deep cleaning your teeth is what I prefer. If you compare the cleaning process and time my former dentist took, you have no idea of what intense pain means in such a short amount of time. I can tell you a handful of times when I left that office with my sensitive gums bleeding and me sweating with anxiety because they didn't bother to care. Trust me, going to the dentist can be a real nerve racking and painful experience. But now, I don't have to worry about that kind of stuff anymore. Do you? read more

This was the most unprofessional dentist office I have ever been to in South OC. My periodontist and hygienist where I usually go are great and they have me on a routine to get a cleaning every 3 months, however they don't take my new dental insurance, so I made an appointment here for a cleaning, strictly because they do take my insurance. I scheduled my appointment about a whole month in advance, explained to them my situation and how I just want a basic cleaning, and confirmed with their office it would be covered by my insurance. They insisted I had to get x-rays and an exam (which I did not need because I had just done that a few months ago at my usual place) in order to have my cleaning done there. The day I arrived I got their at 940 for a 10am appointment, and by 11am they still had not even started my cleaning. The dentist tried to insist I had cavities in my x-rays I should pay to get fixed. First of all I haven't had a cavity in the last 20 years, and second of all I just had a full set of x-rays 3 months prior and was confirmed cavity free. It was obvious right away this dentist was just trying to find things to charge me for so they could make more money. I told her let's just stick to the standard cleaning I was there for. Then she insisted she needed to measure my gum pockets, yet another thing I did NOT need because I had just had this done by my periodontist AND this not standard procedure when you are just coming in for a basic cleaning. She took out her sharp tool and kept stabbing me and then kept saying "bleeding". Stab stab stab and then "bleeding bleeding bleeding". Of course I was bleeding because she was not being gentle at all. By 1130am (an hour and a half past my appointment time) all she had done was make me bleed for no reason. Then she refused to let me get the cleaning I had scheduled a month in advance. She said I needed to get a more in-depth expensive cleaning. Again trying to nickel and dime me to make them more money. I explained to her that I get a regular cleaning every 3 months and according to the specialists I go to on a regular basis thats all I need right now. She refused to let me get the cleaning covered by my insurance and said if I didnt want to do the more expensive option then "this just isn't the right practice for me" and I should go elsewhere. She went on to rant that "this isn't a massage parlor where you can just order what you want". I told her that they never should have told me via phone I could get a regular cleaning then if they refuse to provide them! and then waste 2 hours of my time there on x-rays and an exam and poking me with sharp tools and making me bleed (things I didn't need and never asked for). Not only are they unprofessional and rude here, but they do not render the services you schedule for in advance. If they can't sell you on something more expensive, like a fancier cleaning and fixing non-existent cavities, they ask you to go elsewhere. This place is scam. I wasted hours of pay from missing work for them to make money off me with unnecessary x-rays / exam and couldn't even get the one thing I actually came in for. read more

Fell asleep for a little! First time I've ever been to a dentist that knew to use this rubber device during the procedure that made my mouth comfortable. Usually my past experiences leave my mouth sore and in pain. Dr. Ly was comforting throughout the process. Making sure to assess my pain threshold. I have been an adult patient for a couple of years and was seeing Dr K. Today, I was under Dr Lien's care and left with confusion and throbbing gums. Dr Lien's dental approach wasn't gentle and caring but rather harsh to the point that my gums are still throbbing (it has been a few hours now). Her pressure can be described as harsh on my gums when she was floosing them. I had tears in my eyes because it was painful, stopped her during the floosing process and made a comment that her pressure is rather rough. She explained that most people don't floss hard enough to remove bacteria..And this is the appropriate pressure. In my many years of going to the dentist for bi-annually care, I don't recall experiencing throbbing gums, if ever. read more

My wife went to this place to have one tooth fixed a couple appointments ago but still has not had it Fixed. Staff has been very rude, condescending towards her and keeps having her make repeated visits due to their mistakes or just lack of care. It's very frustrating having to hear this as she needs her crown fixed. She is not a dentist and depends on the expertise of this dentistry, which is apparently lacking personable skills towards their customers. Will not be back here ever again. I was a new patient and had seen Dr. Ly once. I was happy to be her new patient after having a terribly impersonal experience from the large practice across the street. It was time for my second appointment. But when I had to reschedule due to an unexpected work commitment I was shocked by the attitude I received on the phone! Life happens. Things need to be rescheduled. But Anna admonished me, that the hygienist was already scheduled, and that she had to charge me a fee. Rather than being understanding, she scolded me, like I was a child. Then she could not reschedule me for another two months. I'd expect this from the impersonal practice I just left. When I walked in; everyone was super sweet and welcoming for my first visit. Did my X-rays; then everything went south from there. I was scheduled for a regular cleaning- which the Dentist refused to allow me to get. She stated I needed a deep cleaning; which would cost me out of pocket continued expenses. I explained to her that another dentist office had me do this (which there was no difference in how the hygienist actually cleaned my teeth for maintenance and ended up costing me so much out of pocket surprisingly at each visit which is why I left that dentist because they hadn't explained that to me BEFORE I had agreed to complete that treatment). So this one had refused to perform any treatment unless I agreed to what they recommended. After taking time off work to go; I got no treatment. Then they tried to force me to sign a document that was a list of their recommendations but the document looked like the treatment was performed and there was nothing on the document that indicated it was suggested or recommended treatment. I explained that to the staff and was made so uncomfortable; I finally had to leave. Sadly can't recommend this facility to others. If you go; just be aware. read more

I am in my 14th month of having Invisalign, and Dr. Mai Ly and her staffs have made the process pleasant and nearly painless. My 1st appointment was throughout; and I received detailed information during the consultation. Later, every visit was quick and efficient. Dr. Ly is excellent in my treatment as well as in communication. She is also caring and well aware of her patients' expectations and desires. The receptionist, Ana, was very nice and funny; she understands that "life happens" and makes effort to help me whenever I have time conflicts. Penny is a kind and helpful dental assistant; her calmness often helps eliminate my anxiety. In the 10th month of my orthodontics, I accidentally broke a button on my canine when taking off the trays. The rest of the button's sharp edges hurt my inner lip. So I contacted Dr. Ly's office, and Ana quickly made an appointment for me in the next day. When I arrived at the office, two patients were treated, and a couple was waiting in the front area. I thought I would have to wait at least 1 hour to see Dr. Ly, but I was wrong. Dr. Ly met me within 15 minutes, quickly removed the broken button, and attached a new one on my canine. She assured me everything was fine and that my orthodontic process would not be affected by this broken button. An efficient in-and-out visit for a sudden appointment! Overall, I've had a great experience with Dr. Ly and her staffs. I'm happy that I'm in good hands and receive great service every time I visit Ladera Dentistry. I always had a hard time finding a good dentist. I actually tried 4 different dentist before discovering Ladera Dentistry through a referral. I guess you can say I was traumatize from my previous experiences with bad dental offices. Either they were unprofessional in terms of dealing with patients or they were more focused on charging what they can to get more money. Ladera Dentistry was totally opposite from the other dental offices I ever been to. The office decor seemed more like a spa than your typical dental office. Dr. Ly and her staff were professional, friendly, and made my dental experience very pleasant and comforting.
