Tonight two of my friends and I came here for dinner, this was our first time here. It wasn't too busy which was great for us. The restaurant was beautiful. Love the white and brown interior. When we walked up the steps the server saw us and we went inside. We sat in the dining area in the back which was perfect. The server was nice and friendly (we didn't her name). We order cocktails. We all order martinis. Mike and I had a Pomegranate Lemon Drop, and John had a Dirty Martini. Our dinner was good. John and I both had roasted tomatoes and red pepper soup (yummy). I had the shaved Brussels Salad as my dinner. John had the Winter Beet Bowl, and Mike had the Roasted Duck. Everything came out on time, our server came over to make sure everything was fine. We met Matt (chef/owner) making sure our evening went great. We had a great talk about the restaurant and he and his team did an amazing job. First and last visit to Lady Bird. Five stars for food, one star for service which was simply not acceptable for a restaurant with premium prices. Following are some of the issues during our recent visit: - the menu needs to be updated or servers should be aware which menu items are not available. Two items, including a beer recommended by the server, were ordered despite not being available. - servers should know the basics about menu items. The only available cider was advertised as dry and turned out to be sweet. There is nothing wrong with admitting ignorance unlike misinforming the customer. -restrooms were dirty shortly after dinner service was started- clearly not cleaned prior to evening rush hour. -the main room is very loud making it very difficult to carry a conversation. We were pleasantly surprised to get a seat on short notice! Excellent location and the food really was outstanding. It is pricey for sure (34$ up charge for adding steak to salad) but in all fairness it was really cooked to perfection. There are more reasonable (and yummy options). It's high quality food done right. Portion size on fish and steak were on the smaller side. Smash burger was a favorite among all as well as vegetable side dish. The waitress asked us a few times to split the bill down the middle and we relented but afterward wish we hadn't. It made for an awkward reconciling after. We arrived somewhere around 6pm and were almost the only ones in the restaurant and we were the only ones in the outdoor area in back. The point being the staff wasn't overwhelmed with tables. Our Server couldn't have cared less. No one came to see if we needed anything at any point during our meal or asked if everything was ok. No drink refills- nothing. The hair in the lobster salad (seafood tower) didn't help and no one liked the hot table water from the dispenser sitting in direct sunlight. Perhaps some ice in the glasses would help? Details regarding the seafood tower ($175). We received a $25 discount for the hair in the lobster salad. The crab tasted weird/not right. The shrimp was good, the lobster was good, the tuna poke was good but they give you 4 -6 tortilla chips to eat what's served which is not enough (we would have politely asked for more had anyone cared to ask us if we needed anything), the oysters were just ok. When a table is ordering one of your most expensive items you might want to check in on them. French fries were the highlight of the meal. We were celebrating a birthday and would've stayed and ordered more had anyone cared to ask us while we were there. Instead since we were basically invisible so we requested the check at our first opportunity and tried to end that experience as quickly as possible. The drinks were weak and the service lax. When I mentioned that we were surprised by our drinks, the server actually became unpleasant and argued with me. I will start off by saying I REALLY wanted to like this place. This corner of downtown Saugatuck always seems to struggle, and I was hoping this spot would finally bring life to this particular area. We checked out reviews on Google (since there are more reviews there) and saw some disparaging comments, but overall saw really positive feedback. Sadly our experience did not reflect the rave reviews we saw. I know this place just opened up about two months ago, so I am hopeful it will grow, improve, and smooth out the rough ends in the coming weeks. The Good: - I was really impressed with the drink menu. The wine selections were on point and the cocktail offerings were tasteful and diverse. - The food menu options were equally tasteful and diverse, with meat, seafood, and vegetarian offerings. - At the recommendation of our server, I ordered the fluke and enjoyed both the fish and the heirloom tomato salsa. - I appreciated our server's honesty in answering my questions and helping me select a great dish. The Bad (with recommendations): - Although overall I enjoyed my dish, the lump crab was extra fishy and quite unpalatable. It would have been a better dish without the crab altogether, so I recommend either making sure the crab is in excellent shape before serving, and if not, then just omit it. - My friend ordered the duck and it was hard to justify the $42 price tag. It was *maybe* 3oz of overcooked, yet somehow fat unrendered duck breast that was tough and chewy. I suggest reexamining how you are currently cooking the duck breast to make sure the fat renders and the meat doesn't overcook. I also suggest increasing the portion size OR reducing the menu price. - A produce sticker was left on the rind of a lemon slice that was used as garnish, which isn't terrible, but gives the appearance that the fruits aren't properly washed before using. Please be meticulous in removing those stickers during the wash process. - The space was really loud, which made conversation really challenging to the point where we just didn't talk much. Some acoustic paneling would serve well in the space. - The server floor was also super chaotic, disorganized, and loud. Servers were yelling at each other across the room to communicate and multiple different servers came up to us over the course of our meal to ask if we had already been served. I recommend additional training for server etiquette for more classy establishments as this place (and price tags) aspires to be. The Ugly: - Unfortunately, there were a few ugly elements to our experience here. We are certain there were bloody (unknown if animal or human origin) thumbprints on the rim of the plate, which only became obvious as blood and not the demi-glaze as it dried and the food was eaten. By the time it was undeniably dried blood, the food had all been consumed and a little late to complain. Regrets and fault on our side for not examining that more closely ahead of time and raising the issue early on for the restaurant to be able to address it. Hopefully no illnesses will come from that, but we are keeping an eye out over the next few days. - The toilet seat in one of the restrooms was visibly dirty and definitely needed to be cleaned. Overall, the foundation for a fantastic restaurant is there. However, hygiene and value for money need to be addressed to ensure repeat customers (especially those during the off-season) and, ultimately, long term success. Good luck!! read more

I want to love this restaurant and hope this 1 experience is an outlier. I ordered the sword fish (salmon was farm raised so a 'no go') and it came with potato hash which was heavier than expected for a fish entree, however, it was the mushrooms that were a real problem. They were so tough I had to spit them out as they were not 'chewable' but more like trying to eat rubber. Really, really awful for $45- or at any price! The waitress had an attitude and seemed very unhappy to be there. It was difficult to get her attention and she seemed to take pleasure in ignoring us. I guess pavers or something will go in later this year but for now it's very hard to walk in. No way a stroller or heels could make it out there. Our food was pretty good. Loved the lobster roll but sweet salty chips were a bit over done. The turkey BLT was good but lacked enough turkey amd was sliced quite thin. Fries were yummy and crispy and not overdone as seen in some pics. The star was key lime pie. Would go back just for that alone. But I will come back. Everything was very pretty. Location great.
