Cafe Lafayette's Turkey Cheese Macaroni plate to go.
    Tamara C.

Top of its class. Affordable comfort food of the Tenderloin for over thirty years. Generous portions. I ordered the Turkey Cheese Macaroni. It came with mash potatoes and gravy and canned corn. The main dish was delicious and filling. I am disabled and cannot walk and you have to be careful navigating the TL streets but I sent my support worker to pick up the food I was craving.

This is a no nonsense place. Less salt. Checked. Hugh portion. Checked. Awful neighborhood. Checked. Family owned. There's a lot of food. After getting the lettuce and tomato salad and soup, I'm pretty much full. Two pieces of sourdough bread. Friday's soup is a big bowl of clam chowder. This is as cheap as it gets. $21 for all this food. You can say no flavor, but quantity is the key, but everything seems to be hot and fresh. Fast service. Yes. Prime rib comes with mashed potato and corn. Great big cut and natural and juicy. Perfectly medium rare. Tender and full of fat. Jello at the end of the meal. No fanfare. Diner style. They even serve pancake and sausage at night. The waittress is super friendly. Talks to her customers like old friends.

I visited this place on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 1 pm, and there was no customer in waiting for food , there was only one customer who was done with his food . . I ordered a simple dish, sausage and egg, from their menu. However, things took a turn when three people arrived at 1:05 pm and were treated differently. They seem like regular customers. The woman took their orders and served them before me, despite my earlier arrival. I didn't receive my food until 1:30 pm, which was disappointing. The food was just average, and to be honest, the quality and taste were subpar. It was overly oily, which further detracted from my experience. Sausage was burnt alsoDue to this, I don't plan on returning.

A spot on example of an unpretentious cheap eat in the tenderloin. Can't beat a prime rib dinner for $20 or a full lumberjack breakfast for less than $15. Mom and pop place since forever so please tip your server kindly!

Spend less and be better off with canned meat/corn, insta potato. A nasty joint w/dirty floors, booths, tables, serving old chewy microwave repeat-reheated stuff (a piece of food is scalding hot and cold in different parts) along a dollop of canned corn and powder mashed potatoes. Didn't have the specials of that day and served what looked to be leftovers from unfinished plates of others with someone's attempt at eating them covered under sauce facing the plate. Nice people tho

Greasy spoon, check. Dive, check. Tough neighborhood, triple check! While on a banh mi run, I happened to park in front of here and read their window taped menu. I took a photo and drove out of Dodge, knowing this neighborhood's reputation. A few weeks later, I studied the menu and the daily specials made my stomach growl, especially Monday and Tuesday. It brought me through a time tunnel in recalling the food I grew up eating. I got here around noon on a Tuesday morning and found a metered parking space around the corner on Eddy. When I walked in, the first two booths were taken so I walked towards the back of the restaurant near the kitchen at a table for four. The lady manning the front of the house was in the kitchen and gave me a menu as she brought food to the seated diners. I didn't need to look except to confirm whether I'd order the ala carte or dinner portion. Opting for the latter, I quickly received my glass of ice water and, shortly afterwards, my soup and salad (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=njtUEMghO61IQlNG-BDC4A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the soup was chicken barley and was pretty stocked with carrots, celery, and chicken. The salad was your typical iceberg lettuce and large tomato slice drenched in thousand island dressing. A few minutes after I finished them my beef stew with potatoes (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=xfHTCeG6xYrZ301AstxLxQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) arrived. I was happily surprised by the portion especially given the price point. I forgot to mention that I wanted rice so potatoes were served. Totally impressed by the number and size of the beef stew, all lean and mostly fork tender, I liked that some pieces had lining attached to give them a nice chew as a change of pace. There was no shortage of flavor and ingredients with generous amounts of carrots and celery though the sauce was a tad on the sweet side. I packed half of the entree for dinner that night. As I dined, a steady flow of familiar customers came and went in picking up bagged takeout orders. A couple more tables near the window were filled as I left. As I walked out, I noticed a single diner in a booth feasting on a plate of turkey with the trimmings, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and all. Guess I know what I'm having next time I visit on a Tuesday.

Affordable prime rib cut was about an inch thick. Came with a salad, soup, and toast for only $24. Service was very fast and efficient.

I love the Lafayette coffee shop! Last of the good old Chinese American coffee shops. Honest food made fresh with real ingredients. Not greazy, & I always feel good after I eat there. Example: Turkey special- delish! Turkey carved right off the bird! Love the well marbled prime rib too! Steamed stout on Friday, with Clam Chowder!! Need a grubbin' cheeseburger? Oh yes. Great breakfasts? Oh hell yes! Corned beef & cabbage special makes me feel like it's St Patrick's day! Hearty, served with fresh steamed cabbage, carrots & chunks of potato. Yum. Specials rotate by day, try em all! Quirky Tenderloin atmosphere? For sure!-- Be understanding! This ain't the Ritz, & don' t come in with a fussy 'tude expecting everything "just so", they are too busy for people being jerks! Salad dressing: you better like thousand Island, cus that's sometimes all you get... Potatos that come with burger are delicious, but are prepared in a "smashed hash brown" kinda deal... Love the daily meal specials! (I stick to the specials)- Specials come "ala carte": (Ala carte is the main dish plus a nice serving of the side- veggies, rice, potatoes - varies with special) , Plus for a small extra fee you can make it "full meal" that gets you daily soup & lil salad. Great Deal!! Lafayette Coffee Shop is a hidden gem on Larkin @ Eddy in Little Saigon! DC says: CHECK IT OUT

    Beef Stew - not appetizing!

Always walk by this place and wanted to give it a shot after a co-worker recommended this place for a hungry soul. Walked in and ordered their daily special. Is it good? The food was not appealing at all and far from delicious. The portion sizes are huge. The daily special comes with a side soup, salad, main course and a dessert. Sounds like a bang for your buck but nothing's good. Also it's on the worst part of the Larkin St and you cannot avoid dining with the drug junkies. Going with a 2 star just for the quantity of food for the money.

Different Special each day. Check out the menu. Wednesday Special, Stuffed Bell Peppers are my favorite. Only place in town you can get them. Short Ribs are good too. Everything here is good at half the price of other places. Portions are big. The prime rib dinner is better than the House of Prime and is only $20. Fillet of Sole is better than Original Joe's. Complete dinner comes with entree, mash potato, vegetable, bread/butter, soup, salad, desert. The bread is specially baked and delicious. bon ap·pé·tit.

The 2nd visit the service was impeccable, everything went exactly as we had hoped. We will be back. We can recommend the scallops and the Salmon, the chicken was very tasty. Also, for the food, I recommend the dips and the fresh pitas, so good. We'll be back just for that. Reminds me of the old Berkeley restaurant years ago, Holy Land (IYKYK). Mmmm. Thanks!

The sandwich comes with a small dressed salad and three tomato halves. It was nice. The potatoes served with the sandwich were roasted but served cold and dry. Like they were left over from the night before. Randy enjoyed his mocha. We shared a very dry, flavorless except for the two small bits of jam in them, "cheese" danish. Definitely skip this $7 item that you could get at a circle k for $1.50 and it would taste fresher. You order when you walk in and someone delivers your order and then you're left to fend for yourself. We were able to locate some ketchup for the potatoes on our own. Nobody ever checked on us. This is the second place on this visit that's charging an extra 5% fee so that their employees can have a living wage and health insurance, which absolutely, every employee should have. With the prices they charge, they should already be able to do that, though. I read an article about this fee with many different names and I would rather pay a bit higher of a price and know the employees were taken care of than be surprised by this fee later. Two sandwich breakfasts, a mocha and a danish on top of tax and their healthy sf fee was $63. Steep for the quality we got. Won't be back.

All seating is bar style with high tables hence the name "Hardwood Bar." The food was okay and I'd much rather go to Fikscue if I'm feeling BBQ next time to be honest. We shared ribs and each of us got an entree. One of my friends often orders from here for delivery and was excited to try it in person so that the food would be hot. Surprisingly, our tri tip and brisket came out slightly cold so it wasn't that different from delivery... The ribs were okay and not the most tender. Our server was great and service was good despite the restaurant being relatively full and served by one person. What I find the most perplexing is how they calculate the "SF mandate" fee and sales tax. I'm local to SF so I'm used to restaurants tacking on this "SF mandate"/"SF healthy mandate" fee, but their calculations just seem a bit off (see receipt). If we're calculating this correctly, 4% of $130.40 should be $5.22 and 8.63% of $130.40 should be $11.25. If you include the SF mandate fee in the tax calculation, then the $11.74 is right (if you include their calculation of the SF mandate fee). I'm not going to argue over a 50 cents or so but it's the principle of it! They should definitively state the actual % of 4.35% they're charging instead of just stating 4%. I mean at scale -- it adds up right? It rubbed me the wrong way for sure.

Good wine and cocktail selection from the bar. I would pass on their burgers though which are mediocre. What makes this place 5-stars is the service and ambiance. Some of their staff have been there for several years, which is a testament to how well the restaurant is run. Since it's along the Embarcadero and close to Fisherman's Wharf, a lot of tourists tend to wander in. And this is probably why their website says there's a strict dress code. But I feel comfortable coming here in shorts and a t-shirt. The staff is always welcoming. I also go to the Los Altos Grill which is the same restaurant as Hillstone. The menu is pretty much the same, but the service at Hillstone is just excellent.

Then they said "please don't move around so we can get the right food to you" which, like fine but that's not the reason they didn't want us to move. You're aiming for a hoity toity atmosphere, we can move plates around. There's an obnoxious but unenforced dress code (no jerseys then someone came in with a jersey and was as seated, no baseball hats...), but the straw that broke the camels back was when the hostess asked me to stay seated while I was seated. My 4 year old needed entertainment as we were paying the bill, we were in our last few minutes there and she told me that I had to stay in my seat. Which I was. They didn't get the order right for said 4 year old: hamburger, no cheese. Showed up with cheese. If you don't want kids in your restaurant, just turn people away. But also you're on the Embarcadero, not in a fancy neighborhood. Overpriced by 20%.
