This is a legendary diner in San Francisco's Tenderloin. The last one left in the area, so I had to stop by. I ordered the Monday Pot Roast Special, they have other options as well. I liked how the dish came with a soup and salad too. The plate was a great portion size and the side of toast was a nice touch. This was a hearty meal and I was impressed by the price all under $20! In celebration of their 100th year in business I'll give them an extra star. The chef seems like he was born behind that grill and stayed there ever since. Everything is cooked exactly as you want it. While the menu has a few misses, there's so many items that they have that are amazing. The hamburgers are simple but perfect, they are way better than 99 percent of restaurants that only serve burgers. The french dip is the best I have had. Every Tuesday thanksgiving turkey dinner and Thursday St Patty's corned beef are both excellent and bring a sense of celebration to days that have nothing else to celebrate. I visited this place on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 1 pm, and there was no customer in waiting for food , there was only one customer who was done with his food . . I ordered a simple dish, sausage and egg, from their menu. However, things took a turn when three people arrived at 1:05 pm and were treated differently. They seem like regular customers. The woman took their orders and served them before me, despite my earlier arrival. I didn't receive my food until 1:30 pm, which was disappointing. The food was just average, and to be honest, the quality and taste were subpar. It was overly oily, which further detracted from my experience. Greasy spoon, check. Dive, check. Tough neighborhood, triple check! While on a banh mi run, I happened to park in front of here and read their window taped menu. I took a photo and drove out of Dodge, knowing this neighborhood's reputation. A few weeks later, I studied the menu and the daily specials made my stomach growl, especially Monday and Tuesday. It brought me through a time tunnel in recalling the food I grew up eating. I got here around noon on a Tuesday morning and found a metered parking space around the corner on Eddy. When I walked in, the first two booths were taken so I walked towards the back of the restaurant near the kitchen at a table for four. The lady manning the front of the house was in the kitchen and gave me a menu as she brought food to the seated diners. I didn't need to look except to confirm whether I'd order the ala carte or dinner portion. As I walked out, I noticed a single diner in a booth feasting on a plate of turkey with the trimmings, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and all. When I was out of work several years ago and looking for cheap eats in the middle of the day, I know I should have been networking for my next job, but I won't lie...I sometimes went to the old location about a block away on Hyde where their familiar circular neon sign still resides. You could get a slice of prime rib with mashed potatoes for $11.25. Granted it wasn't a House of Prime Rib King Henry the VIII cut, but on a tight budget, it worked in a pinch. Now the coffee shop and the prime rib are back in a marginally better location in the middle of Little Saigon on Larkin Street where Crawfish Fusion used to be. I think the trio of people who staff this place used to work at the old place. Gotta love the consistency. There's the quiet line cook who keeps to himself at the grill in the back and of course, the talkative veteran waitress who remembers everybody who walks in there, and replacing the older woman who swept the floors is a younger girl who handled the same clean-up chores. Jamie W. and I came here on a recent Saturday morning to try the breakfast specials. Sure enough, it was already half-full of their regular customers, but we managed to snag a booth that still needed busing. We both ordered the same thing, the $6.95 No. 2 Special Breakfast. For that ridiculously low price, we both got two hotcakes, two eggs, four links of sausage and a separate plate of hash browns which isn't even mentioned in the menu (photo: http://bit.ly/2d1Eeer). It wasn't incredible but it was satisfying and quite filling, especially the pancakes which absorbed the syrup like nobody's business. A cup of coffee was $1.95 with refill costing you 75 cents extra, but she doesn't make a special effort of policing the coffee pot. I told her since I literally just ordered I just wanted to make adjustments sorry, she smacked her lips walked away. If you are looking for Filet mignon or Duck a l'Orange you probably won't want to eat at this classic American diner. With delicious made to order breakfasts (eggs, meat, hashbrowns, toast) perfect whether you want scrambled or over-medium, over-easy, fried, poached; this is the place to go! The food is fresh, delicious and common! The portions are unbelievable; I generally have enough from one of their specials to put me up for lunch & dinner. I believe never judge a book by its cover so I decided to give it a try. Some of the best food that I've had is in run down places so here goes. I step in and I'm greeted by an Asian lady. Oh my, it does get better. Maybe some places need to be judged by their cover. Anyway, I had committed myself so I decided to press on. The menu is your typical diner style meat based plates, sandwiches and breakfast fare. The server recommended that I try the prime rib after seeing that I was having difficulty in making a selection. No mam, I'm not doing that. I finally settled on turkey dinner which is turkey meat with mashed potatoes, gravy and corn. I think it was less than $10 with tax and payment was cash only. After ordering I was on my way in 5 minutes. What I got was a heavy container stuffed to the brim with food along with a piece of bread. Let's start with the good part. The turkey meat was perfectly moist and tender and corn was perfectly steamed. Moving on to the average, which would be the piece of bread and mashed potatoes and finally the atrocious gravy which was just plain terrible. It was doughy, smelly and off-putting. They had doused tons of it on top of the mashed potatoes and the turkey. They also gave a little pudding on the side on top of the turkey making that end a sweet, savory, jiggly mess. The positioning of this restaurant is for the budget conscious. They try to give you a lot of value for your money all of which is not necessarily bad. Here's my advice. Ask them to give you gravy on the side. Next tell them that you don't want the crappy pudding. This will give you a neat plate of turkey meat, corn and mashed potatoes for a very cheap price. The gravy and bread you can safely trash and still come up on top because you are paying so little. At best, three stars, that too if you are on a tight budget. read more

We finally get menus and our water. Water was placed far from us. Our orders were taken, the waitress was quite short with us. Aside from the customer service, the prime rib is good.
