I was walking around Millbrae Machines and made my way into Lai Lai's. It was my first time going there. I ordered #1 off of the lunch specials section. One thing that I thought was nice that there could be substitutions for just an additional dollar. Also, the service was amazing. The workers were very nice and always made sure that I was okay. They made sure that I didn't need anything else. When the food came, I was genuinely surprised by how much food was packed onto the plate. It was overall pretty good. I had to order a company Lunar New Year Celebration Lunch for 85 people and thought I wouldn't be able to find a place at such short notice for such a large order, but when I spoke to Gary, he was very kind and said it was no problem and even assisted me in how much to order so that I didn't have too much left over and enough so that we didn't run out. They were even able to deliver it for us for a noon lunch and let me tell you, the staff loved all of it! It was sweet and tasted like oil water mixed with sugar. Why was it sweet? I lack the words to describe how bad it was. Not hot nor sour. Egg rolls $7.75 : Typical, run of the mill. Average. Green onion pancakes $4.35 : Soggy and very oily. BBQ pork chow mein $10.50 : We had one small serving then threw them away. The noodles were mushy and lacked any flavor. The "bbq pork" was boiled/steamed and flavorless. The dish was basically unseasoned boiled noodles. There must be some fantastic dishes other than what we ordered. This place has a 4 star review?!? I make it a point to pickup some wok fried fish fillets, noodles, veggies and a variety of meat dishes whenever zucchini come to town to takeover to my elderly mother to enjoy. There's a good sampling of Americanized Chinese menu items but if you want something less traditional don't be afraid to ask Gary for something off the menu especially tailored to your needs. Order was delivered. No chopsticks in bag and only 4 soy sauce packetsafter I'd asked for "extra extra". Stir fried rice was completely bland and needed flavor. The broccoli in the semi warm rice was cold and was obviously not mixed with the rice as it was all on the bottom in very big pieces. Nothing "stir fried" about this rice at all. What a rip off.. Soy sauce would have helped it but I got a huge container of rice - it's all going in the TRASH! Had dinner here last night with several friends after my friend suggested this place. Apparently she had received several recommendations about how good the food was, and I was not disappointed! Other details besides the food were impressive, too. The place is clean and quite large, and the service was very good. Our waiter was very nice, and our waters were refilled several times over the course of the meal. I was quite impressed with the food. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were large. We ordered the following: Scallion pancakes ($3.25): a generous amount of pancakes that were well-flavored with scallion, and came with a sweet chili dipping sauce. I like that it didn't feel overwhelmingly fried, but had some airiness and crunch. Walnut prawns ($15.50): this was probably my favorite dish. The prawns were huge and lightly breaded and fried, and covered with a creamy sauce that felt decadent and tasted delicious. There were also glazed walnuts that added texture and nuttiness. Mongolian beef ($12.50): my second favorite dish. The beef was super tender and came on a bed of sauteed onions and shredded carrots. Chicken with string bean ($10.75): the chicken was again, super tender, and I love how this dish came with a lot of string beans that were tossed in a garlic and chilli sauce. It was slightly spicy and delicious. Kung pao chicken ($10.75): diced tender chicken was sauteed with zucchini and peanuts, in a spicy sauce. The sauce was a little less spicy than the chicken with string bean sauce, and I liked the overall flavor of this dish. Overall, all the dishes came with a nice assortment of different vegetables which was very nice, so I felt like we were eating a balanced meal even though we only ordered meat dishes. This place is GOD AWFUL. I went here with my boyfriend because it's a place my family used to rave about. We got the dinner combo and wanted to switch out one of the normal entree options for a different one. They said that would be fine. The soup and the egg rolls were good.... but then the entrees came.... 1. They failed to substitute our request in. 2. When we approached them about the issue, they just said, "ohhhhhh, that's not what I heard" and then walked away with no offer to fix the problem. 3. We had broccoli beef and walnut chicken. They both looked fine but the texture and the taste of both of these were similar to wet dog food. We did not touch the chicken and walnut, as we did not want it in the first place and forced ourselves to eat the broccoli beef because it was clear they were not going to do anything to fix the issue we presented with our order and we don't like to waste our money. My husband, 9 yr old, and I went here for the first time last night. We ordered the Hong Kong style noodles with chicken, chicken curry, tofu with black mushrooms, and rice. It was all A-ok. My daughter's favorite Chinese dish is Hong Kong style noodles, and every where else we've ordered it she loves it, but this one she wasn't a huge fan of. I think the sauce is a tad sweeter than usual. I liked it well enough. The tofu dish also was a teensy bit sweeter than I expected, but the tofu was perfect -- deep fried and super soft, and the mushrooms were good. My husband gobbled up the chicken curry. We were here 6:30 on a Saturday eve and we were seated right away as the restaurant had only a few other tables filled, about 20%. The decor is outdated wood-looking laminate wainscoting throughout. Looks like it hasn't been updated in decades. But it's a comfortable place. You get good white cloth napkins. The chilled water tastes filtered, which is awesome. The tea is standard fare. Your place setting includes a fork but you have to ask for chopsticks. This is true American Chinese and not Chinese food, and the clientele reflects that. read more

Went to eat here on Christmas Eve, and they were not prepared for the amount of people that showed up on Christmas Eve. The food took an hour to arrive at our table, and service was pretty much non existent. When we asked the waiter, he said this was the first year they've ever been open for Christmas Eve, so obviously, they did not prepare well for the influx of people. After the food came, he also ended up asking where we were from, as we were actually the only asian people in the whole restaurant. He acknowledged that 90% of their customer base was non asian. I was starving today, after having skipped Lunch. I decided to order delivery from Lai Lai, the reviews looked pretty good. I ordered the Special Chow Mein and the fried chicken wings Szechuan. The chow mein tasted greasy and salty. There was no flavor in the Szechuan Chicken wings, they looked to have seasoning based on the red color, but it just tasted greasy and sweet. No flavor in either dish, other than the texture difference, I wouldn't be able to tell what I was eating. Again, perhaps I ordered the wrong items, but these dishes were so bad, I am unsure if its worth coming back. read more

I've would often go to this restaurant in years gone by when I lived in the Bay Area. My mom had requested to eat at this establishment for her birthday. Unfortunately the food was not up to par. The Szechuan chicken tasted as though it tough, tried out. The rice was stalled and dried out. So disappointing I was so sick afterwards. We ordered egg flower soup (which was basically oil, water and starch lacking any flavor and was so bad we couldn't eat it), Snow White chicken which had chewy chicken and they added carrots which were not on the menu in the description (and my family members hate), and chow mein, which lacked any flavor my husband re-stir fried it with sauces from our fridge so we could swallow it . This was a great waste of money and food- we look forward to Chinese left overs and it was SO In Edible that we barely touched it and threw it all away- breaks my heart to waste food but it was pretty darn terrible and it's really hard to screw up Chinese food. I'm pretty bummed, I've been ordering via Uber about once a week from Lai Lai, I like the food. Last night my order had a note telling me that Uber and Yelp charge 30% Commission and "there goes the profit".
