The food here is great, and I have really enjoyed eating many of their dishes over the last couple of months. The pad thai (N2) is my favorite and they can make it any way you choose. I usually order with veggies but I have also had the seafood version as well. The spice level choices are no spice, low, medium,medium-hot, and hot. I usually have medium but have tried the medium-hot and I can say it's not the hottest but definitely has some heat. The pad thai sauce is sweet and has a tangy flavor that makes it unique from other pad thai. For appetizers, there is also the or tofu tod (A2). The tofu tod is not impressive by itself but the dipping sauce that accompanies it is absolutely great, it's sweet and tangy, (pour some on your Pad thai or fried rice). This is the first Thai restaurant that I know if that will make your food with low salt or no salt, which is helpful for us watching our sodium intake. So however you would like your food prepared to let them know and they will work with you. While I must say I am impressed with the food at this location I am even more impressed with their response to the pandemic. The only option is curbside pickup or delivery and it has been this way since the early part of 2020. I appreciate the convenience and especially the food. Cheaper and better than the more sung about Thai place down the road. It is an especially good steal for lunch. The food here is cooked as you like it. Extra cilantro, no worries. Extra garlic, great. Extra hot, ummmm you might wanna rethink. Portions are big. Service is good and friendly. I have tried a variety of items over the years and have never been disappointed. Food is never greasy or heavy. I really like anything with the perfect fried tofu. The spirit and river noodles are good. I like the green curry, pad khing, pad gra praw and the sriracha fried rice. Spring rolls are crisp, I like the curry puffs and satay is nice. In the summer the yum apple salad is so refreshing. I especially love the desserts in here, tiny little baked ramekins of custard and coconut ice cream yum. read more

I have many fond memories of Lai Thai, as it was one of the first Thai restaurants I had ever tried. I'm happy to report the food is every bit as authentic and consistent as those early visits were more than 10 years ago. As I mentioned above, I've been coming to Lai Thai for more than a decade. I started meeting my mother here for lunch during summers off from school and often stopped in to pick up their Tom Yum soup when I had a craving for the spicy, lemony soup (I only get it with the fried tofu!). Everything here is consistent, is reasonably authentic and has been family run and owned as long as I've been going there. My favorites are the Pad Prik, the Tom Yum, the Yellow Curry with Shrimp and their Potato Curry Puffs. You are always provided a soup of the day during lunch hours and dinner prices are very reasonable. The family that owns it is absurdly friendly, and if you're in more than once, they'll no doubt remember you and strike up a conversation. They never fail to ask me how my mom is doing and warn me that I always ask for too much spice in my food. It's very small, is always crowded during lunch (usually with the Japanese, Indian and Arabic businessmen from around the area who know and seek out the authentic spices and ingredients Lai Thai is known for), so bring your patience. Food is always out quick. They're great with substitutions, a reminder that it's made fresh. Great prices, incredibly consistent and locally owned and operated are the recipe for success here. If you're out Ikea way, keep driving past it down Ford Rd. past the big box chain restaurants and make a Right into the strip mall where you'll see Murray's Discount Auto and McDonalds. Usually good, it seems like I've been getting a bit of attitude lately, and I don't know why. I walked in and sat in a booth. After 10 minutes of waiting, the owner asks if she can help me. "Um, if like to order? Am I sitting in the wrong spot?" 'No, you sit where you like' she responded. I ordered and she immediately brought the spring roll over. A few minutes later, my red chicken curry arrived. It's a lot more bland than the previous times that I've ordered it. It tasted like the chicken was just tossed in a minute before serving, and no flavors really blended together. She doesn't speak to me. I hear her jokingly talk with the other customers at the table, just never says a word to me. Even when she just brought over my bill, she didn't say a word. I had to ask for a box, though she just asked the only other table if they needed one. Anyway.. Normally I'd call this place my second favorite Thai place to eat (second to my mom's Thai cooking) but the more I come here, the less impressed I am. She at least said thank you and goodbye after leaving her a 40% tip. read more

Pad Thai, F7 Fried Rice, Spring Rolls and this Pineapple Cream Cheese appetizer that I could have eaten all night. The prices are reasonable and the food is incredible. My search continues for good Thai food in Southeast Michigan. I love Thai Thai in Ypsilanti, but their limited hours always impedes my access to great Pad Thai and curry. I found the food at Lai Thai to be wanting. The Pad Thai was not very good, it was okay, but almost tasted fast-food-ish, such as the kind you get from "No Thai" (which I consider "Not Thai"). Coconut soup tasted less tart than I'm used to, almost chicken brothy and mild; it was good, just different. Due to their cheap lunch prices, I would definitely return if I'm doing a round of shopping in Canton, but would not seek this place out for Thai cravings. read more

We love Lai Thai. When my sister comes from out of town this is the first place we go, and often more than once during her stay. Everyone that works there has been very kind and patient. They really go above and beyond if you happen to dine in and I've never had any issues with carry out. Which is not that common these days. Lai Thai deserves as much praise as I can give. We've ordered delivery at least once a week for at least four months and probably more. The food is always fresh, delicious and prompt. Everyone who works at Lai Thai is so nice, and their customer service is fabulous! They always get our order right, suggest new menu items they think we'd like (we do) and they often write a nice note on the rice container. I used to like this place. Until today. I was back in my hometown of Canton, and took my mom out for lunch to Lai Thai, a favorite of ours for many years. My mom mentioned to the waiter that her son had come all the way up from Kentucky for work and wanted to come to Lai Thai for lunch. He smiled, gave us two free bowls of soup, and took our order. Mom ordered the can't-go-wrong Pad Thai with Scallops. I ordered the Pad Almond with Tofu. While we were waiting, the old female server went around, refilling drinks and playing nice with the guys/businessmen on their lunch break. When she got to our table, she didn't so much as crack a smile. You'd think there was a funeral at our table or something. When our plates arrived after about 20-25 minutes of waiting (lunch rush was in full effect), I immediately noticed that my tofu was overcooked. But Justin, how exactly did you notice? I'm glad you asked. The tofu was rubbery and dry, and just entirely dissatisfying (check the pictures. There's an example of what the tofu is supposed to look like). I wasn't going to say anything, but the more I thought about it, the more upset I was. When I motioned to the waiter/manager/whatever the hell he is, he came over with the bill, and set it on the table. I then told him that the tofu was overcooked, and he came back with "Ohhh, it's not overcooked, you can have it cooked any way you like." I replied, "I've never been asked how I'd like my tofu prepared." His reply? Looking at my mom, he said, "Oh what does he know, he is from Kentucky!" Now, I'm not an angry man. It takes a lot for me to yell, but wow, was I close to standing up and clocking him. I may not be from Kentucky, but I do take a certain amount of pride in the place that I live. For him to boldly insult Kentucky and assume no one here knows about tofu is a slap in the face. I left a $1 tip on a $15 bill and a little note at the bottom of the receipt. I had my reservations about Lai Thai at first, mostly because I'm a snob about what I like in Thai food. That being said, my family, friends, and I went all out! Starting with the appetizers: * The small cucumber salad sides were Delicious! Loved the "dressing" very refreshing. * A4 Curry puffs were very good. A little heat, a touch of curry, very tasty. I'm not a fan of curry in most cases but I'll make an exception here! * A5 Kong Nang Roll was very good. Excellent dipping sauce. Hot fresh and tasty! *Won-ton soup. This is not your Chinese mother's won-ton. These freshly made dumplings have great flavors. A touch of sesame pepper oil complement the meaty taste. The broth actually is good too. Not just plain water tasting! *SF1 Yum Apple Salad. OMG!!!!! All I can say is that I would NEVER have tried it based on the description (my sister ordered it). It is PHENOMENAL. *SF2 Yum Ta Lay salad is LOADED with fresh seafood in a light cilantro sauce (I ordered this one). Scallops, shrimp, squid, crab....Perfect!!!! OK, the main courses at our table: *FR3 Kow Pad Gra Praw (hot). This was an excellent basil rice dish. I had mine with chicken. The ingredients blended perfectly, and I couldn't stop eating it. Hot was just the right amount of heat, but I may try extra-hot next time just for fun. I'll definitely have it again. *N11 - Ba-Mee Heang. This noodle dish was ordered by my younger second cousin, so was skeptical. It easily could have been the best dish at the table! He had his without any meat which was good, but I really want to try it with tofu and chicken! *E6 Pad Prew Waan (sweet & sour). Our friend ordered this and said it was good. It was very colorful and the presentation was awesome. I tasted the sauce because I'm not big on S&S dishes, but this was relatively mild and tasted pretty darned good. It's on my future order list! *C9 Yellow Curry - My sister ordered this with shrimp, and my daughter with tofu. They both said it was great. Personally not to my taste, but as I said, I'm not a big fan of curry. The presentation of all of the dishes was very nice and obviously well thought out. The service was PERFECT. Prompt, courteous, speedy...everything I could ask for. The food came out hot, fresh, and quick. This is my new go-to Thai place. If you haven't tried it...take the plunge now. Ok. I thought maybe my first review was a little harsh, so I stopped by here again to see how things were. I was seriously craving the Tawana Noodle dish. I am writing this review from the parking lot. Why? Because this sort of "exceptional" service needs to be shared. I stood there for 5 minutes and failed to even get someone to acknowledge that I was there. I went in and stood by the front for a minute waiting to be seated, but nobody came. There was an employee on the phone near the register taking an order, so I went and politely waited for him to finish. He didn't even glance in my direction when he was on the phone. When he was done, he hung up, scribbled some stuff on a pad, looked up at me like he was wondering what the hell I was doing standing there like an idiot, and then walked away. He ignored friendly "hello" and ignored my "excuse me" as he was walking away. Classy. Now, I don't go to restaurants because I expect the waitstaff and employees to treat me like I'm royalty. I am not a fussy eater, I don't customize my orders, or ask for substitutions. I don't expect comps if my order is screwed up, and I tip a minimum of 20% for even average service. But in normal everyday human interactions, I expect people to behave, well, like normal humans. You know, like shaking hands when you meet someone, or making eye contact when you speak. Normal everyday stuff. People that can't do these things set off red flags when you interact with them, and generally these are the types of people that most other humans avoid. Usually with good reason. That being said, I have a hard time patronizing an establishment where its principal employees are unable to accomplish the simple task of treating me like a human being, let alone a customer. I ended up walking out of the restaurant, again. That's twice in the last two trips. So I'm done. Good though the food may be, I am not willing to weather the horrible service and rude staff in order to eat here. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area. read more

I'm bummed, I had a great review written for Lai Thai and my phone froze up, so I'm looking for the words to write this one... LOL I went there on Friday, April 29th around 2pm... I took Friday off and after stem cleaning the carpet, shopping for my 6yo daughter's birthday and fixing a lean in the kitchen sink, figured it was time for a nice, hearty lunch. I felt like Thai, and since the place I used to love down the street left my pocket book quite thin from the last visit, decided to give Lai Thai a chance to win my business. The last time I ate there was 2 years ago, so I went in with mid-expectations... From the moment I walked in, I remember why I didn't really care for eating in. The booths are somewhat tight and kind of a bear to get into for this 250lb dude. LOL I order 2 spring rolls and the lunch order of Pad Cashew with Chicken and HOT... Gotta have it super spicy at thai.. LOL Well, they brought out some soup that was similar to a hot and spicy, but the waitress had no clue what the name was. She said, "He just threw it together this morning." I thought "wth?", but just let it go. I was just ok, nothing really special at all... Next, my 2 very well done spring rolls came out smoking hot & petrified. Literally.... I crunched my way through them, Thank God for the duck sauce and finally my Pad Cashew came... The first thing I noticed was the plate was smaller than I remember. Overall, it tasted good, but was not spicy at all... I'm a little taken aback by the rancor of the past reviews. Although I've only been to Lai Thai twice, I've been really pleased with the experience. I went for dinner with my friend just today. There were a fair amount of people present for dinner (being a Friday) but the host gestured for us to seat ourselves where we wanted. I've always liked the interior of Lai Thai because I find it warm and cozy. My friend and I chose a booth which wasn't too cramped (although we are just two teenage girls). We were promptly handed us our waters and we were attended to by the older female server. Someone mentioned previously that she seemed only friendly in the presence of the businessmen, but she made pleasant small talk and asked after us even though we're just two girls. I ordered the Pad Prik with pork and my friend the Tawana Noodles with chicken. Both arrived promptly (within 15 minutes I'd say) and both were very tasty. I was scraping the bottoms of both of our bowls. I'd say the sauce in my dish was especially exquisite. If I could have boxed that alone up, I would have. I asked for medium hotness in my dish and accordingly there was a slight kick, but nothing that had me reaching overmuch for my water. My friend's Tawana noodles were also very tasty, although I didn't get to eat very much of those. The slow and unfriendly service seems to be a big dealbreaker with many past reviewers but I've found no fault with it... in fact I'd even go so far as to praise the kindness of the server we received. The food was yummy as well. I can't attest to the authenticity of the dishes but I can say as a human being that they definitely pleased my taste buds. The amount of spiciness was attended to and the flavors were pleasant. 5 stars for the sauce on my dish alone. Not to mention that the prices are entirely reasonable for the dishes we received. I have eaten at Lai Thai countless times, and it is our favorite local Thai place. The food is reasonably authentic, and varied. It is a plus that almost all the dishes can be customized in terms of ingredients and spice level. Not only does this mean you can make a few changes to satisfy your preferences, it also indicates that the food is made fresh. It is a smaller restaurant, and usually busy, which I take to be a good sign. The prices and portions make for a good value at lunchtime, and a little less so when ordering from the dinner menu. I've always found the food to be fresh and of a high quality. I certainly recommend this restaurant for those in need of a quick Thai fix. read more

Very good Thai food with lots of vegan and vegetarian options. We started with the Tom Kha soup, a coconut milk based soup with plenty of fresh vegetables. It was very tasty with hints of spiciness (we ordered medium). Then we got the Drunken Noodles (no egg) and the Massaman Curry with Tofu. This was served with a small bowl of white rice. The food was very good. Service was very good. Prices were a little higher than I expected, though it seems like lunch here is a great value. Spirit noodles, Pad Thai, and my favorite the Panang curry with chicken are fabulous. The Thai iced tea is not to be missed, and the cucumber salad is wonderful. The only thing they don't have that I miss are shrimp chips, weird I know, but I've grown to like them over the years! Soup is just not the same without those strange styrofoamesque little gems.
