I have been going to this place for years. It's a great little family-owned neighborhood restaurant. The restaurant is not huge, but not too small either. The menu is typical Thai and the dishes are wonderful. The service may be slow for some, but I like taking 45 minutes to a full hour for a meal and not into fast food. So it suits me just fine. Gives me a chance to chat and enjoy a good meal with friends and family. I am rating it 4 stars, because that's as high as I rate. I have been here a few times. The place has great Thai Food. The Gang Ped and other Vegetables with Chicken with shrimp are good. I tend to like my dishes medium + and the spicy is done just right. My coworker and I decided to give this place a try today. Both of us are big fans of Thai Cafe on Main in Plymouth, especially their peanut sauce, so we like to compare. I was very excited to see that they had Pra Ram Long Song on the menu. I haven't seen it anywhere except Thai Cafe (one of my fav dishes). The peanut sauce was very similar and yummy! I ordered mild to play it safe this time, but will definitely order medium next time. It could use a little more flavor or kick, not sure which it needs. The broccoli was very fresh and crunchy, which is a big plus in my book. The soup that came with our lunch was just okay. I think it was the ramen noodles that turned me off. Even though it's been about 15 years since I lived off of ramen noodle, I am still sick of it. The fresh cilantro was very nice though. Service was a bit slow, but they were busy and only had 1 server. This has to be the largest dining area I've seen in a Thai restaurant lately. Not that I have been to every single one in the metro Detroit area, but that seems to be the trend. Our waiter was very nice. Prices are a little less than the places in Plymouth, but the portions are also a little smaller. Not a bad thing though. I usually come in at lunch time. Their food is decent. Most of the time I order the Spirit Noodle. It's made with rice noodles and is very good. There are different soups which come with the meal depending on the day. My favorite is the hot and sour soup. Theirs is different from other places, but quite tasty. One minor complaint is the food isn't very spicy, even if ordered hot. The brown sauce is good though. The rice noodles are too. We went on a Sunday evening and the food was very good. It tasted fresh and it was more than enough. I believe 2 people could easily share. My husband did mention that his soup was better than when he comes during lunch. The service was quick and friendly. We will defiantly come back. My wife has a strong affinity for classic thai Druken Noodles and Spring Rolls of any variety, so we had to get some carry out here from the closest Thai place in Canton. (There's a new Bangkok Flavor 2 opening in the near future, next to the Asian Grocery Mart, which is about 2 miles closer, so we can't wait to try that). Anyways, we got take out, but the ambiance and decor of the restaurant was tastefully Thai and clean and pleasant. The food itself was definitely good and authentic enough for us. We are not foodies by any means, but I can usually tell the difference between good and not so good. Her drunken noodles (which i guess is some other name, but the nice lady figured it out), were hot, flavorful and plenty of veggies- she gets no meat/tofu because she doesn't like it. My beef pad thai was good... i always order mild because anytime i go somewhere new, i don't want to risk medium until I know better. It was well sauced, not too wet or dry, and had a good amount of tender meat. Also, our spring roll appetizers (1.20 each?) were still golden, crispy and delicious even after my 8 minute drive back. The filling wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but it was classic thai. Overall, this is definitely a quality Thai place... it's not Siam Spicy or Pi's Thai excellent in my book, but if I need a spicy pick me up in noodle form, I would not hesitate to come here. I will have to branch out and try some of the other items later on... there's just a ton of food options around this area, it's hard not to get something different every time. But still a good Thai place regardless... maybe i'd have to try that one down the road to compare. read more

I have been searching for an authentic kao soi dish since I moved back to the US from northern Thailand. This kao soi fits the bill. My boyfriend had the pad see ew and it was amazing as well. I grew up going to this restaurant with my family. I love this place. The staff here are so kind. I haven't lived in Michigan for 10 years but I always go there when I go back to Michigan. The food and service have always been excellent and on ocassion, I have been able to get Tod Mun Pla fish patties-one of my favorites. They serve many options from mild to very hot and their prices are very reasonable. I have been to this place since it opened decades ago. They are one of my favorite Thai resto in the area. But, the original owner have retired or move out of the area and sold it to their worker-partner. That changes everything, the prices went up, the food was so-so and service was terrible. The owner do the serving, cashiering, etc. too busy. We love the food and service at Lai Thai. We live out of state and the server who has been there for a long time, hugs us and treats us like family whenever we come back. She always remembers what we order too. The heat level is a teeny less than my husband prefers but perfect for me when I say mild. Lai Thai is still my favorite Thai restaurant, and it has been hard to find one in Arizona, Florida or Western Michigan to compare. As others have stated, Cake and Kung, the owners, are fantastic. Very warm people. When I used to live in the area, I probably ate at LT 2-3 times per week, and, after discovering it, never went to the other local Thai place nearby. When my travels took me away from SE Michigan, I always detoured back to Lai Thai whenever anywhere close. I recommend the curry puffs and angel wings for appetizers, and all of the fried rice dishes and massaman curry. Also, the Hot and Sour soup is amazing--blows the Chinese variety out of the water--I think it has curative properties too. I notice the present menu postings here are very incomplete. I note that some have said the food isn't spicy enough. Most Thai places don't trust Americans to know what true hot and extra hot is, and so you have to assure them you are an experienced heat lover. That said, I never had a problem getting Cake to provide the spiciness desired. read more

Excellent food, but no beer. I started with the Tofu Tod appetizer and a Thai tea. The tofu was hot and soft in the middle, and the peanut dipping sauce was just right. The Thai tea was very tasty and thirst quenching. I ordered the Panang Curry w/chicken, as per the hostess' suggestion after I asked which was her favorite curry. I ordered medium spiciness. The white rice came in a big covered serving bowl with its own spoon. The curry came in a dish. The curry sauce was not thick, but it was spiced "medium" exactly how I expected. The total came to $13.47 after tax. I thought the bill would be more actually, because the entree alone was $9. I will definitely go again for the food. The only drawbacks were: Cheezy Thai music playing Cheezy Cheap decor Plexiglass table tops which were cracked (every table). Time to upgrade to real glass. This place must have changed quite a bit over time, since one reviewer talked about the huge lunch portions, but you coulda fooled me--it's def more like Dave K says: 1) booths are TINY, and I'm not even a big person but it just feels cramped, 2) the main dish plates are TINY, and 3) it seems like, for one of the servers at least, this is THE most unfavorite job in the world, rushing customers through decision making (it wasn't even busy in the restaurant) or, alternately, making our table wait a long time before coming to get our orders (like the place is so big you can't see from one area to the next? Not). I've had Pad Thai, Pad See-Ew (sp?), Tom Yum soup, and curry puffs there, and things were pretty good for the prices (lunch is a better bargain, but even dinner entrees are often under $10, which is a good deal and indeed more reasonable than the well-known thai place down the street). One table diner said the "hot" pad thai he ordered was totally mild; all my stuff was mild and they stuck true to that. The Pad See-Ew was way too sweet for my taste, but maybe that's the dish--it was the first time I had it ever, so I can't compare to anything yet, not that I will try it again if that's the standard. One of our very favorite restaurants to visit when we are in Michigan. Very clean and very friendly staff. The food is delicious, they even make it spicy enough for my taste which doesn't happen often. The spring rolls and chicken stay that we had as appetizers were both perfect were out main dishes. We asked for egg rolls, they gave us spring rolls. They were good. The Pad Thai sucked, it was lacking flavor. The Tom Yum was good, but I wish they didn't fry the tofu. The C3 didn't come with a very large portion and the scallops were so small. I will never be coming back to this place. Thai Bistro is right down the road and I think their food is so much better.
