An update is needed! Just last night I tried Lake Harriet Pizza's newest pizza, "Sweet Heat." Fabulous. Spicy, sweet, crunchy -- a perfect combo that didn't rely on just the cheese to make it work. It's ingredients include onion, jalapeño, goat cheese, sausage, and hot honey. Emphasis on the "hot honey." Included is a separate container that you drizzle over the pizza. Really, so good. In my effort to support local restaurants during this "unusual" period, I have been ordering take out, curb side pickup and delivery from an assortment of establishments. This is the first in a series of reviews or updates. Recently my son and I took out bone-in wings (with Buffalo sauce), 3 pieces of cheese garlic toast and a 20" 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 sausage & mushroom pizza. Wow, clearly our eyes were considerably bigger than our stomachs. Together we consumed the tasty wings and to me at least first rate toast. As far as the pizza, my son ate much of his pepperoni 1/2 while I actually made three meals out of my 1/2. Personally, I found the leftovers to be even more flavorful than when fresh. A bit on the pricey side but overall a very good neighborhood place for pizza and the like. Definitely worth checking out in my book. read more

I have a major bone to pick with the owner of Lake Harriet Pizza, Gary Johnson, for how he responded to a terrible bout of food poisoning caused by his restaurant's food. tl;dr: He had the audacity to show up at our house at 8:40 PM the night before Thanksgiving and essentially accuse us of being liars, grifters, or both. It all started last Saturday. My wife, friend, and I shared only one meal together that weekend -- take-out from Lake Harriet Pizza. Included on our two pizzas were veggies such as spinach and mushrooms and artichoke hearts. 28 hours after eating the pizza, just before midnight on Sunday, the diarrhea began. Then the violent vomiting. Then back to diarrhea, then vomiting ... you get the idea. Three hours after my lovely night began (during which I was unable to sleep, and spent most of the night in a bathtub), my friend woke up at 3:30 AM with his own delightful experience with bodily excretions. Four hours after that, on Monday morning, it was my wife's turn to puke and poop and puke again. She and I spent most of Monday in bed; forget work, forget taking care of our 7-month-old baby, we were sick as dogs. The three of us were the only people to eat the pizza, and the only ones among our family and friends who got sick. And, again, it was the ONLY meal all three of us shared that weekend. It doesn't take a genius to connect the dots. I called Lake Harriet Pizza to report the illness and then notified the Department of Health. The next day, my wife decided to call and request a refund -- after all, it's not fun to spend $40 in order to get violently ill. Although he questioned my wife's claim that the pizza was the cause of our shared symptoms, the owner agreed to a refund. But rather than put the money back on our credit card, he said someone would be by that night with cash. Strange, but okay. Here's where the story takes a turn. At 8:40 PM the night before Thanksgiving, Gary Johnson, owner and operator of Lake Harriet Pizza, showed up at my house. The first thing he said was: "How strange that no one else complained about getting sick. Only you." Um, okay, I guess not everyone reports food poisoning? This is relevant why? Unless -- he couldn't possibly be insinuating we were making it all up, could he? Next, he asked (for the third time) what was on the pizzas we ordered, and I told him (for the third time) that they included spinach and mushrooms and artichoke hearts. His response: "so you ordered totally benign pizzas," even though leafy greens such as spinach are common carriers of food-borne illness. He had been giving off a hostile vibe to this point -- he still hadn't offered us our refund -- and so I said, "yeah, that night of diarrhea and puking sure was fun!" He raised an eyebrow, and, with a smirk, said, "diarrhea, huh? You had diarrhea?" My wife, who was standing nearby, said "Yes, we both did, classic symptom of food poisoning." To this he cocked his head and, still smirking, said "Well -- not really." Do a Google search, bud. Diarrhea is among the most common food poisoning symptoms. Anyway, at this point I had had enough. The audacity of this man to show up at our doorstep late at night of a holiday weekend and insinuate we were either lying about being sick, or lying in order to get a refund, was simply outrageous. I told him to give us our money and leave. To his credit, he gave us the $40; but this was never really about the money. It was about the principle of not paying for the "privilege" of getting violently ill for 24 hours. Even if he were dubious that his restaurant caused the food poisoning (despite the fact it was literally the only meal the three of us ate together, and all three of us got sick within 7 hours of one another), then the professional response would have been to say "I have my doubts it was us, but I'm really sorry you got sick, that's never fun," and give the refund. Either that, or don't offer the refund in the first place. What you SHOULD NEVER DO is show up to a customer's house and imply they are either liars or grifters, after they just recovered from being violently ill for 24 hours. This happened three days ago, and I'm still mad just thinking about it. I've given the restaurant 2 stars because the sauce and cheese is good (though the crust is too bland), and we previously liked to order from this local establishment. But after this experience, I will never order from Lake Harriet Pizza again. read more

We received a coupon in the mail and ordered delivery from lake harriet pizza. They arrived on the minute that they projected. We got the Bbq chicken pizza, pepperoni and Caesar salad. The pizzas are a lot larger than I expected and since they are cut into squares they will feed more than you think. The crust is thin and proportionally covered with toppings. GREAT pizza. I live in South Minneapolis and there is no shortage of good pizza in the area...Red Wagon and Broders are within walking distance of this place. I think they have a couple of tables outside but so seating inside. That being said, they are in my za rotation. A couple of orders ago I added wings. Super solid. On par with places that specialize in them. **Another thing I like about them is the local connection and cooperation** I went to Parkway Pizza (also great pizza) and they had some awesome seasoning on the table to add. I put Lake Harriet Pizza right up there with some of the very best in the Twin Cities for pizza. Their pizza reminds me a lot of Red's Savoy Pizza in St. Paul. The cheese is heaped on. The red sauce is abundant and has a distinct flavor, and a bit of a kick to it. The ingredients are fresh and generously applied. From a price perspective, they can compete with the major chains. A 12' one-topping pizza (which easily feeds two hungry people) for $11. We also ordered three pieces of garlic cheese toast: seasoned well, great marinara sauce on the side, and again bursting with cheese. On a Friday night at peak dinner hours, my carry-out order was ready in 20 minutes. Inside the store, the young lady at the counter was attentive, prompt, and friendly. Ever since the under-hyped Cafe Bicko went out of business last year (and, yes, I'm still whining about it), I've been searching for a good pizza that can be delivered. With me living a half bock (yes, 1/2 block) from Galactics and Luce's delivery zone, I've been relegated to Green Mill or, heaven forbid, Dominos or Pizza Hut. But then I came across Todd K''s review and I perked up. I called LHP and found out they deliver to me. Happy days. We ordered the Supreme (sausage, pep, mushies, green olives). The toppings were generous, the traditional crust was very good, ie not too doughy, and the sauce was tasty. I'm very pleased with my experience here and definitely will be ordering again. Great pizza, bad management. I love the pizza (lots of cheese and toppings and great sauce!) great cheese bread, and love their simple dinner salad. But I ordered during some snow a couple of weeks ago and waited 2 hours no pizza no one would answer- I double checked and they took online orders still. Finally gave up and had frozen pizza for all of us starving. I emailed that night, no response. I called after a couple days and the owner called me back full of excuses, no apology, not so much as a small coupon. He actually complained that he gets too many emails to respond and spent a lot of time telling me how his own ordering system wasn't his fault or responsibility. I'll be buying pizza from establishments that appreciate their customers in the future and actually care when they sit all night hungry. The very least they could've done was reach out and apologize he said there was many people who ordered that night and got no pizza. Not that hard to reach out and apologize the next day. OK, Rant Time: How come one of the most inexpensive, lowest-common-denominator foods we all order, is too-often bundled with indifferent, attitude-filled or even openly-hostile service? And why do we tolerate it? We've all been on the receiving end of unsubtle-annoyance and oozing-attitude from the anonymous person on the phone when trying to order a pie. Sure this person is probably tasked with making and packaging pizzas as well as taking calls, and they probably have a ton of work to do, and they probably don't make a lot more than minimum wage and deserve more, but they routinely treat you, the paying customer, like some sort of immense "waste" of their valuable time. Why is it, when trying to order $15-$30 worth of delivery pizza, we tolerate behavior from the phone-person and delivery driver, that you'd never even consider taking from the clerk at McDonald's, with your $4 value meal? Heck, you wouldn't even tolerate this type of behavior from the sniffy waiter at a trendy $50/entree spot. But for some reason, the pizza-shop staff routinely turns you into some type of compliant sheep. The delivery driver arrives and, "Oh *shrug* I forgot your cokes" *long silence* "A... that's OK". AND WE MEEKLY TAKE IT! At one point I got so tired of the phone-wrestling that I started Internet-ordering from the big chain-delivery outfits: * Mmmm meatsa-greasy(tm), yet that endearing flavorless-ness. * Or, it's pretty sad when the pizza-bread is better than the pizza. And even worse when the local franchisee keeps trimming menu items (no medium pizzas? no more pizzabread?) and dropping the coupons that make them even worth bothering with. We've done the hip "Check out My Piercing" spot too: Sure it's good pizza; once you get past the pages of sprouts and vegan-de-lite items (none of which should ever come into contact with the upper surface of my pizza.:P). And they're pricey and can be attitudinal on the phone as well. They'll rapid-fire dictate the terms of payment & delivery at you, much like a mortgage lender. Plus they've gone credit-cards only as of 2006. Credit cards-only, but their website provides no means to safely fork them over. Am I the only person around that feels safer feeding my credit card number to a large indifferent computer on a website, rather than the anonymous phone & delivery staff? And then, like a breath of fresh air (*harp-zing*), there's Lake Harriet Pizza. (*queue hearts & flowers music*) It's a delivery/carry-out-only spot at Penn & 50th in the Lakes District. The process starts on a very refreshing note: Instead of the traditional speedy annoyed/yelled, "HOLDPLEASE*SLAM!*" you get at most pizza-purveyors, you get a pleasant, if not clearly busy, person on the phone. They'll politely take your order, quote you the total and delivery time (~35mins for us 12 blocks away), and _thank you_, before moving on to the next caller. You'll get no lectures about what forms of payment they take. No long quizzes over license numbers, how many phone numbers to write on your checks, your blood type, CreditScore(tm), or other forms of verbal strip-searching. In most cases they won't mention anything other than the price. I know they take checks. They might take credit cards, but I've yet to bother to try to use one. Around 35 minutes later, (often within minutes of quoted target), your hot pie will be delivered by an equally-pleasant delivery driver - in my experience, someone that actually appears to enjoy delivering LHP pies as much as the order-taker appeared to enjoy taking orders for them! THIS IS AN ENJOYABLE CHANGE OF PACE! The pie is great! Traditional-thickness crust, checker-board cut. LOTS of cheese -- no, LOTS! -- The pie we had last night had roughly 3/8's inch of solid gooey melty cheese over most of it... wonderful sausage in healthy quantities. SAUCE! But not too much. This is a great balancing-act of a pie. I love 'em. There's a reason Strib-columnist James Lileks waxes poetic about LHP from time to time: THEY MAKE A GREAT PIE. Ok, they don't do extra-thin-and-crispy. And they don't do pan or cheese-in-the-crust or other "novelty-of-the-month" pizzas. But what they do, they do quite well. And, if you want, they've also got cheese garlic toast (we like!), hot wings & salads. And pizza sizes from 9" to 20". Prices are good and they give you a sheet of coupons every order: A 16" 3-topping (we like the pepperoni, sausage & mushroom) will run you $15.40 with a coupon. When I haven't had a coupon, the lady on the phone has been known to kick me the coupon price anyway. What's not to like? Pleasently surprised. Hungry... and 10 o'clock wondering if they would still deliver when they close at 11? Yes, no problem. Besides an hour is long enough before closing. So I ordered a 20" pizza for two people. Wow... it was bigger than expected.. apparently I don't know what 20" is oooorrrrr other pizza chains lie! Okay wont call other liars but this pizza could feed 17 children or 6 adults. The supreme comes with green olives which I absolutely adore... yes adore... they are a salty treat and I ADORE them. Especially on pizza. The sauce is flavored really well and it is thick but not pasty. So, sometimes large pizzas end up being soggy. Not this one. Though I would probably get a smaller one next time. Meh. Disappointed. A neighbor loves this place so thought I'd give it a try & got the 'fire roasted supreme'. It was ok but not great. I didn't like the pizza dough/crust: it was very dry, thin and had zero flavor or texture...it was much like those bland 'Carrs' wafer crackers. I like alittle more dough for my dough. Just a personal preference. The toppings were plentiful & the cheese was gooey & delicious but I didn't think it was anything special. A 16" pizza w/Delivery & modest tip came to just under $30 (& that's with a $3off coupon)...too much dough for the quality of the dough. Well, we usually give places a few tries before passing judgement, but our first pizza from Lake Harriet Pizza was so uniformly awful we can safely say we won't be back. We got a regular cheese pizza with garlic on half, plus a side of cheese bread. The cheese bread was freezer-case quality. The pizza... Barf. The crust was a nondescript, tasteless slab. The sauce was way too sweet, and the cheese, well, they seemed intent on dumping a pound of it on our 12-inch pie. The result was a congealing, greasy mass that tasted like regret. We're new to the area, and I was looking for an interesting new pizza place to break us out of our chain-store rut. The reviews on this place were great, so we gave it a go. Honestly, I was underwhelmed. I went to the website to check out their menu; no prices listed. Called them up, the lady who answered the phone was pleasant and helpful, but the prices were a bit higher than I expected. I went for it anyway, and drove to their location to pick up my pizza. Here's where I ran into my first big problem... it was utterly impossible to find a place to park. The store is right across the street from Broder's, and Broders' parking lot was overflowing onto the street. I had to park my car in a spot marked tow-away zone and hold my breath that a truck wouldn't get to me before I could get away with my pizza. I went inside and got the pizza... didn't get towed, but when I arrived home and my husband and I dug in... we were underwhelmed. Bitter sauce, giant slimy onion pieces. Thank god it's right down the street, I have to make up for this lost time. The man and I have ordered from here about three times since we moved to the Armitage neighborhood in August. We have never gotten a pizza we didn't love. Last weekend we had some friends over and ordered the artichoke pizza. The artichokes were huge, it also came with onions and green olives, a lovely combination. They use just the right amount of cheese and the crust is a chewy chunk of heaven. Every time we've ordered we have had a coupon for three dollars off and every time we get a new pizza more coupons are delivered. It's such a great system. This makes the whole experience of eating this 'za painful no matter what its good features may be. This is our family's go-to pizza delivery shop. Family favorites include the supreme and chicken club but I honestly can tell you we haven't had a bad pie. Their chicken wings are decent but the pizza is the reason to call them. We have never dined-in so this is a delivery only recommendation. One more thing, the drivers come when they say say they'll be there and the pies are always delivered hot and the toppings are NOT plastered all over the box. We are relatively new to the Twin Cities and are always looking for new places to eat. We are also relatively big fans of pizza and we get it ordered-in at least once per week. So far, we've found a few really good delivery places in our part of Minneapolis and decided to give Lake Harriet Pizza (5009 Penn Ave. S, Minneapolis) a whirl based on a few "glowing" recommendations from our friends. It's also located within six blocks of our house. Pizza delivery is a complicated thing. There are so many places that truly shouldn't even bother with delivery (rude staff, bad pizza, demanding tips, etc.) and there are others that are just plain great (friendly, fast, great pizza). We read a few reviews and thought that Lake Harriet Pizza would be somewhere in the middle. We were right. The girl that took our order was friendly and told us that our pie would be ready in 25 minutes. We chose to have it delivered and paid with cash. Half an hour later (five minutes late isn't that big of a deal on a busy night in my book) the driver arrived at our door, politely greeted us and left us our dinner. The pizza was fresh and hot - off to a good start. It was LOADED (and I mean, loaded) with cheese. Wow, you really get your moneys worth at this place. Well... then we started eating it and were a little underwhelmed. With all the amazing reviews of how great this was supposed to be, we thought average summed it up the best. The toppings were plentiful, but that doesn't mean that they are "grade-A" quality. The cheese was fine (and a ton of it) but the sausage and pepperoni were bland. We ordered it with EXTRA green pepper and it looks like that was just an afterthought because the pieces were few and far between. The saucy was almost sickeningly sweet. The crust was as described - crispy and thin, but it had the consistency of a saltine - crumbly and flavorless. So, to sum it up - the service was good and the pizza was, well, meh. I've had much worse but certainly a lot better. Unfortunately, this is a local business that I really wanted to love but just can't bring myself to order there again anytime soon. I hate to say that I'd order from Pizza Hut before getting a pie from LHP again, but at this point, that would have been an acceptable substitute. There are other really good pizza places around Lake Harriet (Pizzeria Lola and Michelangelo's are two that I highly recommend). I just couldn't enjoy this as much as I wanted to enjoy it. read more

This is one of the best pizza joints in Minnesota. I heard about them from an owner of a restaurant in Seattle who came to town and was raving about this place. I only eat there every couple months and in my self defense I've only had them deliver (so can't say anything about the restaurant itself). They are a little pricey BUT they also have a 20 inch pizza that will feed a family of four...it's a BEAST and will barely fit in your fridge. High quality ingredients, cooked to perfection, delivered hot, and only negative is a little more than competition cost wise. But if you try this pizza you'll be hooked. I picked up two pizzas on a Friday night, and they were ready in less than 20 minutes, which was great since we were starving. ladies working the phones/pick up were friendly. The pizza was fine, but nothing special. Much better than Domino's or Papa Johns, but not as good as Carbones, Jackeenos, Not even in the same league as places like Punch or Luce. They only have thin crust pizza, but they have a lot of toppings (including sauerkraut, which BF loves, and not many places offer) For thin crust, it wasn't very crispy, and seemed a little too doughy for a cracker thin crust. The sauce had a bit of a nice kick to it, cheese and topimgs were fine, but I couldn't get past the crust. Website does not list prices, which was sort of annoyng, but they do have a generic $1 off coupon that you can just mention. 2 12-inch 2-topping pizzas were $24 which is just right for the quality of the food. I found it more fun to order pizza from here then to actaully eat it. Granted the Pie was very good, I just found it fun to order from a place that not many people know. That being said, why don't you know about this place yet? Oh, cuz you'd rather enjoy having a chain pizza place make it for more? The Za was great, filling, in-expensive and hot. These are all things I like in a pizza. I mean, it's kind of hard to screw up making a pizza (though I think Pizza Hut does), but they really do make this pizza how normal people like to eat it. Cheese all the way to the edge, the crust is great and overall, just a well presenting plate of food. I would easily put Lake Harriet Pizza in the top 3 best pizzas I've had in the Twin Cities. Delicious pizza no matter what kind you get. Very unique taste unlike almost any other pizza I've had. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because we tend to have issues when we try to get it delivered. One time they forgot one of our pizzas and another time it took an hour and 15 minutes. I would recommend picking it up yourself if you have time. The pizza itself is phenomenal though and the staff has always been friendly and apologetic when we had delivery problems. read more
