I went to Northern Fires with my partner to taste test before catering for our wedding celebration. First, it's a very small shop. There is no space to sit down -- you just order and go. They do keep it pretty speedy. It's on the pricier side (maybe 30% more expensive than punch pizza), but I'd say the quality is better too. They use local ingredients for everything and you can taste it -- for example, the dough for their pizza is made from locally milled flour! That alone is worth it imo. We got a squash and mushroom pizza. They were both VERY good, but I preferred the mushroom a bit more. They are also pretty big, -- I wanted to split one but my wife was hangry lol. This is my second time picking up dinner here and both times I've been blown away by how delicious the pizza is! I love wood fired pizza in general but Northern Fires is high quality. They don't skimp on toppings and the pizzas are larger than I expected. We also had the Caesar salad, which would serve 2-3 people. They brought our food right out to our car for us! Also, it seems to only take 10-15 minutes for your order to be ready after placing it. It's definitely take out only in the winter, they have a small patio in the summer time I think. I ordered some takeout for my family, and the pizzas were ready about 15 minutes after we called it in, as promised. The pizzas we got: -Kingfield - included tomato sauce, red onions, mozzarella, house-made sausage, and pepperoni. The sausages and pepperoni were very tasty and went well together - definitely a great option for meat lovers. -Mushroom - there was no tomato sauce on this one, but included garlic, red onion, oyster mushrooms, mozzarella, parmesan, and herb oil. This pizza was probably my favorite, because the parmesan was very pungent and flavorful, and complemented the oyster mushrooms perfectly. The mushrooms were also the right texture and consistency - with a bit of chew, but not too hard. Very tasty! -Blanca - also a white pizza, it came with green garlic, red onion, cream, basil, mozzarella, cheddar, and ricotta. This one was very cheesy and heavy, but the combination of cheeses was not overwhelming. -Stinging Nettles - we went out on a limb to try this one, but it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It came with marinated nettles (spiky leafy greens), feta, mozzarella, red onion, and garlic. The nettles covered the pizza (literally covered the entire pizza), and even though it had a slightly bitter taste to them, the rest of the toppings balanced the pizza out. The toppings were very generous on all the pizzas. The pizza dough was thinner-crust, and even though it seemed like it was made from wheat flour, it was surprisingly not chewy or hard. We also tried the Wood Fired Flatbread, which came with pickled beets, basil, seasoned ricotta, and fleur de sel. The beets with ricotta were delicious! This place has some outdoor seating, but I think they primarily function as a takeout pizza place. Great pizzas and great service! read more

Great spot for takeaway pizza. I got mine and had a little picnic with my toddler at a nearby park. I got the Kingfield and the wood fire wings. Both of which were very good. The pizzas are small so I'd get one per person if you are a big eater. I am very excited to try some more of the options. We've had Northern Fires Pizza a handful of times now and it is very tasty. We love the sourdough crust and plan to buy some of their raw dough sometime to make our own pizza. They have some fun and unique combinations. We've tried the Kingfield, Amatriciana, Blanca and Mushroom pizzas, and enjoyed them all. We've also had their roasted carrots, which are delicious. The reason for 4/5 stars is because I feel they are slightly overpriced. read more

First time. Ordered the breakfast pizza down at the Mill City Farmers Market today. Will not be the last. Great sour dough crust. Their description; Sliced Royale (smoked ham from Red Table Meats), purple potato, onion, garlic, mozzarella, Circle of the Sun (raw cow's milk cheese from Cosmic Wheel Creamery), herbs, and an egg. It was so good! The drive isn't too bad to do a pickup. Too bad they lost out on the building on Lake Street, across from our favorite, The Bungalow Club. I had fun trying out a new pizza place that is local. I ordered in advance (like 6 hours early) and the ordering process was quite easy. There is no lot for the place and there is no dining in, purely pickup only. I was lucky and found a spot right out front. Unfortunately, even with my 6 hour ahead, I still had to wait 20 mins as they were running behind. I ordered the corn pizza (seasonal) and the pepperoni and sausage pizza. The corn pizza was a nice treat. There was jalapenos on it. I do enjoy heat but did end up picking off a good number of the jalapenos to make it more enjoyable. Truly I don't think places use corn enough in their restaurants so I was a fan. The sausage and pepperoni pizza was tasty. The leftovers were fantastic as well. Disclosure: I am not from the Twin Cities so I don't know much about local pizza styles/preferences, but I did live for many years in Connecticut (the birthplace of American-style pizza) and Northern Fires was very reminiscent of the best pizzas you get in that part of the country. What I was really impressed by was the degree to which each component--crust, sauce, cheese, pepperoni--had a very distinct and bold taste, whereas with a lot of other pizzas, it all just kind of mushes together into an overall pizza flavor that is still tasty, but not as interesting and varied of a flavor experience. I also appreciated that the pepperoni had a bit more spicy kick to it than some other pepperoni, and the texture of the outer crust was so soft and satisfying, I would actually be happy to eat just the crusts, even without any toppings. Be forewarned though, this is pretty floppy pizza... not a problem if you're a master of the New York folding maneuver, but maybe not ideal for eating while weaving through rush hour traffic if you don't want to drip sauce all over yourself. (I may have learned this the hard way.) Pizza tastes are very personal, but if this sounds like the general style of pizza you like, Northern Fires is a fantastic example of that style. I don't leave many Yelp reviews--honestly, I don't even remember if I have ever done one before--but this pizza was worth the effort of singing its praises. read more

My work had these guys over for an employee appreciation event, and everything was on point. I had the Margherita and it tasted great--crust was perfectly charred and crispy, but not too much. This is the best pizza in Minneapolis! Everything about it is perfection. Right now I obsessed with the Spec-Tator. The Beet and Cranberry is divine too. The crust is so good. My husband and I just got northern fires pizza today at the Nokomis farmers market. The pizza looked great and we got it really quick. My husband and I were excited for it but we're pretty let down. The pizza was $15 and the size of a regular frozen pizza-- probably 12"(?) And was pretty burnt on the bottom. I stopped at the Nokomis Farmer's Market on the way home from work to pick up a few things and decided to order a pizza to go while I was there. I ordered the Margherita, a favorite of mine. It was done in less than 10 minutes, which was nice. I prefer a nice thin, crisp crust. This one was more chewy and flopped when I picked up a slice, but the flavor of the crust was good. I also like their tomato sauce, nice and bright and fresh tasting. I don't like a lot of cheese on a pizza, but this one was really skimpy. What really ticked me off was that there was ONE basil leaf on the entire pizza. One. During prime basil season! I should have taken a photo. I would have been very happy if mine looked anything like the pizza Margherita photo on another Northern Pizza review posted here. So while the pizza was ok, for $14 I can do a lot better and won't be ordering another one any time soon. read more

Who would have thought Minneapolis would have one of my most favorite pizza joints. We often hear the rivalry between Chicago deep dish and an NY style slice. Watch out world, living in a quaint house lives the most delicious woodfired pizza I have ever had and it didn't even have a cheese. And I love cheese but this pizza did not need cheese. Get "The Bunny" and experience pure balance in a pie. The spice is perfection, keeps you going in for more. Red onion brings flavor and cuts the cream and tomato. When I get towards the end, I fold my slice to include the crust. Oh the crust and that chew. It is everything you can ask for and the char adds a delightful bitterness that further awakens the flavor. Now that I have left Minneapolis, guess what? I cannot find anything like it here in LA.
