We drove by this place, but made a U turn. I'm glad we did. Lakeview Grill's name actually disguises what's really inside. And that is really good Mexican food. We had tacos... beef and chicken. A little past prime lunch hour, and we were the only ones there. Wife raved about her tacos. I enjoyed mine. Keep in mind, as I always warn, this is not Bern's steakhouse. It is a small, I'm guessing, family-run operation with A/C running full blast and it's still warm inside. Several fans help circulate the warm air. The name of the restaurant doesn't reflect the food type, but it's clearly a Mexican restaurant. Inside the decor is Mexican, 90% of the menu is Mexican, & everyone is speaking Spanish. The waitress was kind & did a good job. She brought a small basket of chips & a small bowl of salsa to the table. The chips were heavily salted. The salsa seemed to be plain tomato sauce that had a tiny bit of spice to it. It was very unimpressive. I ordered 2 chicken enchiladas for $8. The enchiladas turned out to be very small with only a tiny bit of filling. I requested the dish be half covered in red sauce & half in green. The green sauce was actually very tasty & spicy. I believe it had both tomatillos & jalapeños in it. The red sauce was even plainer than the salsa. It was flavorless & bland. Halfway through the meal, a asked if I checked in to the wrong place. I had to double check. Yup, this is the place with all the good reviews. I was mislead. I read the reviews, and I was prepared for the place to be a dump; it was. What I wasn't prepared for was the heat. It's July, and nearly 90 degrees outside and as soon as I walked in, I was hit with a heat wave. It was 10 to 15 degrees cooler outside. Maybe the A/C was broken, I don't know. The service was bad. The second server was flat-out rude. Neither offered to refill my empty drink. Finally, when we were finished, we waited for a while. Then, we decided we would just stand up until someone acknowledged us. Even that took a while. Now, on to the food. Nothing was delicious, some stuff was okay, and some of it was really bad. I took one bite of the "salsa" and I was done. First time that's ever happened in my life. It was the worst. It was as if someone squeezed a tomato, poured the juice in a bowl and said, "done"! I ordered three tacos (chicken, pork, and chorizo), the chorizo was okay, and the other two were below average. I tried a fish taco, but the fish had a bad smell. On a positive note, the food came out fast, and wasn't too expensive. It is so hot inside! I can't get over how awful the "salsa" was. This has been become a favorite place for my co-workers and I. Fast delivery, friendly service and great food are always consistent! One time on my lunch break I came in, only to find my co-worker sitting there too! Come to find out, she's a long time regular, and I can clearly see why. The cook is personable, the wait staff attentive and I feel full and satisfied with every meal. One day, after I went to a fast food place that botched up my order I stopped in Lakeview and placed an order. I have only good things to say about Lakeview Grill. I found it on Yelp (of course) when I was searching for an authentic Mexican place to take some of my students on our way back from a beach photography trip. There didn't seem to be anything in Clearwater Beach, so we drove a ways and I'm so glad we did. It was a total hole in the wall, and it would be easy to pre-judge it and not give it a real chance. I wish I could tell you what my students got, but frankly, once my ceviche tostadas came, I think I lost all awareness of anything else. They were so fresh and so incredibly flavorful after a long day of driving and sand that I think I may have entered another plain. *swoon* Was very excited to sit in the air conditioning with Mexican cokes (yesssss) and great food. We were also completely charmed by the decorations in the restaurant, including the elephant figurines by our table and ESPECIALLY by the amazing paintings in the bathrooms. Man, even if you don't go for the food, go for the paintings. You won't regret it. Also loved the faux roof/overhang running along the upper walls. Gives a nice little bodega feel. The only things that could be improved would really be a different setup inside. The table arrangement is a little weird and it's open to the kitchen with a half wall running along one side. It kind of felt like we were floating far away from everyone else. And, well, the parking lot, though I don't think there's anything that can be done about that. It's essentially one way in and angled so you have to back out all the way into the street. During busier hours I can see that being a real problem. I love places like this. Lakeview Grill is a small, off the beaten path mexican dive. The people who work there could not be nicer. They welcomed us as we came in and seemed to genuinely want to make us happy (which we were). The food was terrific. Everything we ate, which was a lot, was just outstanding. The style runs towards authentic regional, but it's not purist in that way. They will go out of their way to give you want you want. The storefront is next to a gas station on Lakeview. I've gotta say that the other reviews nailed it when the said this is a hole in the wall. It's one of those hole in the wall that you want to find though. The food is pretty authentic. The salsa is not chunky, but it really tastes nice and developed. The spice was perfect. I had a chili relleno. I loved it. The red sauce was amazing, couldn't stop eating it. Dom had a steak quesadilla and he raved the whole time. The service good. The server wasn't overly friendly, but he was helpful and definitely not rude. Update. You know how it goes. Update 5/1/2013 Stopped with 2 other guests to let them try out Lakeview's consistently good flavors. Between 2 of us we had carnitas, lamb, chorizo, chicken and al pastor tacos, all excellent flavor and well seasoned. Our third party had the egg and chorizo breakfast burrito with cheese, rice, and beans. I had never had the burrito here so I made sure to have a taste and it was solid flavors as well. Lakeview is still a favorite of mine whenever I'm in the area, and I'll continue to return. 11/1/2011 Nicolas, the chef at Lakeview Grill, serves up a winning combination of an extensive menu with great flavors, attentive and friendly service, a very pleasant environment and good prices. The decor is simple, but the room is very neat and clean. I'm guessing there are probably ~75 seats, including booths around the edge of the room, and tables in the center. The extensive menu is on their website, so I won't exhaust the details. Highlights are big variety of 8 specials and breakfasts, 10 soups, most all of the standard taqueria items, 10 dinners with all manner or meats, 6 seafood dishes, 7 sandwiches (including burgers), 6 salads, 7 appetizers, 5 desserts and a kids' menu. There are even a few Greek dishes. The menu includes a few unusual items not often seen in this area including tlacoyos, oval shaped rolls made of masa (corn flour). They're like fresh corn tortillas, but are shaped like a torpedo and much thicker. The tlacoyos are then stuffed with ingredients/toppings. Other unusual items are empanadas stuffed with either huitlacoche (aka corn smut, actually a fungus...."think mushrooms" ....that grows on corn plants. It's known by mushroom enthusiasts as "porn on the cob"!) or flor de calabaza (squash blossoms). Soon after I sat down, a bowl of super thin & crisp tortilla chips with a red salsa (both extremely tasty) landed on the table, followed by a Modelo Especial brew. I ordered up a plate of 3 tacos ($5.25). The carnitas was very flavorful pulled pork, the chorizo had excellent spicy flavor, and the lamb was just incredible. A few local Mexican restaurants offer lamb on the weekends, but Lakeview has it on the menu every day, and it's also available in their lamb stew. The salsa verde available for the tacos was also delicious with a great combination of flavors and heat. The service was excellent throughout the meal, with the friendly waitress stopping by many times to make sure I was satisfied or if I needed anything. I was still eating when the restaurant emptied out, and Nicolas came out from the kitchen and introduced himself, and he also asked about the food and if I needed anything. We then struck up a conversation about his food, as well as other Mexican food found in the local area. He mentioned that his clientele is largely locals who have been longtime customers. Given the great food and service, I can understand why folks come back often. Although I live a good bit away, I know I'll do the same. They have shrimp, and they have tacos, but they haven't figured out how to put then together. I asked if I could get shrimp tacos, but they said no. The salsa and chips were the worst that I ever had in a mexican restaurant. The salsa was watery and flavorless. I ordered fish taco, it was okay, but I wouldn't order it again. I looked at the existing reviews today, got excited, and took my brother over to the Lakeview Grill for lunch. I try not to judge a restaurant too much on the ambiance, but this one did bother me a little. It did not appear to be clean. The owner / employees provided friendly and efficient service. They patiently explained how items on the menu were prepared, and offered modifications for first time diners. Now, I don't know what genuine Mexican cuisine is like. Never been anywhere but the border towns, and I doubt I'll be going anywhere in Mexico soon considering the well publicized violence that seems endless. But the chips did not impress and the orange-red watery substance served with them did not do anything for us either. The entrees were better. Presentation was nice. The flavor of the food was good. I ordered cheese enchiladas with onions (photo attached). My brother enjoyed his tacos. But I couldn't help but look around while eating and wonder what the kitchen or bathrooms looked like. I work close by and have driven past Lakeview Grill many times, but was always hesitant to give it a try as it doesn't look too impressive from the outside. Finally, today I had a serious craving for Mexican food and after reading the Yelp reviews decided to give it a try. I called ahead and ordered take out enchiladas with rice and beans for myself and coworkers. They accomodated our special requests and told us to come by in 15 minutes. When I arrived the food was ready and seemed freshly made. The decor inside is actually quite nice and bright compared to how it looks from the outside. Everyone was friendly. Upon trying the food it really was fantastic. Everything had great flavor and was plenty of food for the money. My coworkers also agreed with that as well. Where to start. We went out on a Wednesday evening looking for good Mexican food. We didn't find it. We arrived at Lakeview Grill at 7:45pm to find a completely empty restaurant, first sign of oh oh. Went to restroom to wash my hands and it was revolting in both appearance and smell. Which made me mentally question what the food would be like. Oh oh number 2. We ordered guacamole and chips and salsa. It's difficult to believe a restaurant that bills itself as Mexican food could serve guacamole and salsa that bad. The guacamole appeared to be reconstituted and runny and completely tasteless. The salsa looked like it came from a can. It looked and tasted like a bowl of tomato sauce. The Carne Asada was a tasteless, bland and flavorless piece of meat. The Mixed Grill Fajita plate was only a tad bit better. It had a little flavor, not much, just a little. The cheese covered shrimp still even had the tail of it. To be honest I'm a bit surprised we haven't gotten ill from the food. On a positive side, the presentation of the plates was nice as you can see from the pictures. Overall this restaurant was a bust. Wish I could say something else positive but there is nothing. The lot is tiny and it is difficult to navigate in it. We went inside and it was SO HOT!! We sat down and after about 5 minutes someone finally brought us menus. The food came and it was ok but the problem was they charged us $1 extra for every meal we ordered. We frequent this establishment for many reasons. The food is delicious and economical! Don't worry because you will get big portions for little money. The family running the restaurant is very personable, polite and attentive. Though they keep busy with steady take-out orders, the dining room customers are not neglected. The best I have found in the Clearwater area. This is owned by a local Mexican family. They are super nice and always very accommodating to us. We have been there many times and always enjoy the food and service. One of my favorite dishes is the fiesta lime chicken it is very tender and the sauce is so good!
