Very hard review due to the mixed feelings I have about this place. My first impression was over the phone when I asked about check in time I was told it is 3pm and if you want to check in before it is an additional 25 dollar fee, seriously? yes even if the site is available, ok so what do I do if my GPS takes me there and arrive at 2:40 and she said you still have to pay the 25 dollar fee or you can wait at a nearby Walmart. Gave me the impression that is not a customer friendly campground. I wasn't given the discount because I didn't ask for it, no refunds after the site has been reserved, no credits either. Upon arrival we were waiting to be checked in behind a Class A rig by the gate house and due to the size of the Class A I could not read the tiny sign indicating that if there was nobody at the gate to come inside, finally when that rig moved I realized I had to go inside, another 5 or six minutes wasted after 3pm no big deal but it adds up to my initial disconformity. The place is huge! I have never been to a campground with over 1000 sites not one hundred but one thousand! Very hard water but that is not their fault, city water. Got to our site and it looks ok but but but it is not concrete and it is not gravel, it is a combination of dirt sand and leaves. That tells me the site may have been vacant for several days and the 25 dollar fee is not even justified because I am not rushing employees to clean up the site that just became available the day of my arrival. Dirt and sand, no problem as long as there is no rain because I brought my 14 X 14 rug but guess what it rained all day the day before our departure and it was a bit of a mess even if we take our shoes off inside the coach. We didn't partake in any of the amenities available like the water park and the corn hole etc because of the convention we were attending here and BTW the facility we were given was very nice to accommodate about 80 plus of us. I take one star for the fact that my site wasn't quite level and for the dirt, it is not even gravel for goodness sake. I wouldn't call it a resort unless every site was concrete Would I come back? Yes just because the beach right there a few feet from the sites that are closest to the Information Center where we gather every day for our conference. It turns out they give a discount but they won't offer it to you unless you ASK for it and because I didn't ask at the time I booked they refused to refund because it is run by a corporation with dozens and tens of dozens of employees. Inclined to take two stars but because I had a great time with our new friends at the convention I am leaving this place very happy and wishing to come back when it is not raining ALL DAY with a bloody mess on my shoes with all the dirt and sand. This is the largest resort I could ever imagine. Over 1000 sites ! We went after Labor Day and it was great. The sites are sand and leaves so after leveling the camper it had shifted and we had to do it again . We knew to ask for the discount at check in , so that was helpful. It was after Labor Day, so there were no teenagers making noise. It was actually pretty quiet. People walking their dogs and riding their golf carts around. If you have a golf cart, bring it. Renting one is pricey . We walked everywhere, but that do have bikes that you can use. read more

Have stayed at Lakewood Camping Resort for the past 3-years. Just left today from staying there for the annual Jeep Jam in MB. Due to a misunderstanding we missed the 11am pull out / check out. We own this mistake and for that we apologize. However, we were connected and out by noon to head back to NC. The staff (security) was exceptionally rude. The front desk then called and stated that they were told that we were "lounging" at our site. This was false. They too were rude and pointed and then threatened a 1/2 day charge for "hanging out". We could understand if there was another camper waiting to come in but this wasn't the case. Poor customer service is an issue with this venue. Do not recommend and we will not be back. read more

If you want a party atmosphere of loud music and teenagers riding golf carts around until 11pm you will like it. But not our idea of family friendly - yes there are lots of things to do like beach, Putt/putt and arcade (extra $) but for relaxing, walking or riding bikes it's terrible due to heavy traffic of constant golf carts and vehicles. If you don't bring your own fire ring you have to rent one if you want a campfire. Almost all sites are dirt/gravel and they are super close on all sides. read more

Very understaffed, crazy mason ice cream one girl working on a Saturday night, 30 people waiting for ice cream. Gave me a golf cart ticket for parking in a 4 seater spot instead of a 6 seater spot, totally retarded. Bath house 6 ,human shit on the floor at 10pm still there at 9 am Sunday , no toilet paper in any stall men's or lady. Unlikely to return. read more

I absolutely loved this place and we are looking forward to booking another week in 2026! We have pretty much told everyone that will listen about it, too. lol We loved the pool, the hot tub, the amazing OCEAN view which was only about 30 steps from our camper. We loved the atmosphere, the lazy river/waterpark, the milkshakes and the different things like mini gulf, biking, paddleboats and the nightly entertainment. This place was a major win for us. Rented a house via LCR Vacation Rentals Within an hour of our arrival, the ceiling above the kitchen sink area fell onto my head, as well as, onto my dog.  I followed LCR procedures and reported it immediately.  Not long after that, I found the bathroom sink non-functional and followed the same procedure to report that.  Overall, there was a lack of care about my health and well-being after being hit on the head with the ceiling, or the bugs and dirt that were now imbedded in my hair. Yuk! I also had to spend time to reassure my now frightened dog that the kitchen was OK for him to come near.   After our visit, I never received notification that LCR was keeping my security deposit. Upon contacting the LCR office, I was told that they were keeping the security deposit due to the broken ceiling.  They claimed that it was not broken during their pre-check-in inspection. However, I have doubts about their inspection process since they also missed the broken sink.   I considered fighting LCR about the cause of the broken ceiling. I also considered causing a stink since they did not follow South Carolina's Security Deposit Law with requires them to provide me with an itemized list of these deductions which should clearly state the reasons for each deduction and the corresponding amounts. I decided that fighting them from a few states away wasn't worth my time and energy (and I'm sure, money).  In the end, I believe that was their goal and they got what they wanted... and extra $250 fee out of me. I'll just book a rental with someone more reputable next time. read more

We had an issue with our booking. We wanted to stay 3 night but The lady at the desk told us it was a minimum 4 night stay. So we booked 4 nights knowing we was only staying 3 because we had to get back to work. Come to find out from other campers they Only booked 2 night stay. I called the office and the lady confirmed it isn't a 4 night minimum and she couldn't do anything, I have to speak to the manager. Went in to desk to speak with the manager and she was in a meeting and they gave the info. She has yet to call us. Over a week now. I called back and again she's not available!! Lady was rude when I called her out on it. They will lie To you to get more money and never talk to you when they are caught !! Be aware!!!! read more

Our background: Parents to 3 boys, ages 10, 9 and 6. We just got back from our first ever Lakewood vacation, so if you've never been, this might be a good review for you. It sounds perfect - beach, waterpark, ice cream, laundry, warm showers - but I think the ages of your children and your location within the campground has a LOT to do with how your time will go. Yes, this is an RV resort and they definitely cram in all 1,073 spots full. But if you think about a large hotel it's about the same - you just don't see it because it's in a tall building. 4 night minimum stay (which is also for Ocean Lakes and Pirates campground) so it was $420ish. We got site 1731 right next to bathhouse #8 and I'm so glad we did. It made showers (at times were nice and warm and other times I'd get a burst of ice cold water. Some of the shower doors had no lock) and toilet time a lot easier. They were usually open because there are some FANCY RVs in this park so they already have their own showers and toilets. Our spot was shaded (thankfully) and a 4 minute walk to the beach and 5 minutes to the waterpark. Not bad - until everyone's shoes gave them blisters so we splurged and got a golf cart the last day (it's 110/day for the 6 person cart. We went with another family) So if you get a spot far away from everything then you could be spending $800 for your 4 night stay - RV spot and golf cart combined. That's a lot. Make sure and factor that in when deciding and when you reserve your spot. They say you can load your wristband with money to use in the park- what they don't say is that it's only taken at the Trading Post in the front and the Coffee Shop. The Chicken joint, Mason Jar Ice cream, the laundromat, the arcade - they don't take it. If I knew that I would not have put any cash on that band. The ice machines hardly ever work - one guy who has been working there for years said he's only seen them working a handful of times. You can get melty ice inside the Trading Post (it was dripping water as I walked up to pay for it) I think this campground would be better if you had teenagers who could go wander with their friends. Instead we had 5 kids who wanted to do All. The. Things. and had to be supervised. We'd finish our morning at the beach, go back to camp for lunch and as soon as they scarfed down their food (within 5 minutes) they were asking to go to do something else. The options are like a cheesecake factory menu - too many. It felt like we were constantly going with no down time. The teenagers and golf carts - they really should install car rental rules. Some teenagers were rude driving around and had no self control to follow road rules. One of them yelled at some pedestrians to move, shot off and his passenger fell off the back of the cart. The RV resort lifestyle is wild to me. People go to Lakewood multiple times a year. Store their RVs nearby and call to have it towed to their spot for when they arrive. One of our neighbors had been coming for 25 years! We are a one and done family. We experienced it now we find something else to experience. People were generally kind - one neighbor came to help us position our pop-up, and 2 others came to chat. But when you're walking around people are in their own world. When my friends had spaces in their golf cart they would offer rides to people. A lot of them were shocked that they were offering rides and it made my friend wonder if people were actually nice there. We might possibly go back with teenagers but it was just too exhausting with kids wanting to constantly go. Our options for wanting to do a waterpark are camping near Dollywood and going to Splash Country (that has set times and no other options than to go back to camp and rest) and if we want to do the beach we'll go to Huntington State Park and camp there for a weekend. We just felt dirty all the time between the salt water, sweating at 8am, and the dirt floors. Yes I know that's camping but 4 nights is a lot when you have to constantly go with kids. I was conflicted on 3 or 4 stars - it was ooookaaaaay for me but my kids had a blast so it was good overall. read more

We met our oldest son and his family here. Absolutely loved that it's faith based! They have Bible studies for women, children, gospel singing on Friday night, a outdoor and indoor pool, three water slides, Trading Post which also has a ice cream store, golf cart rentals, bath houses, ponds to fish in, a golf cart parade every night, a coffee shop, putt-putt, laundromat, arcade, Wednesday night beach parties, cornhole, basketball courts, volleyball courts, daily trash pickup and more. The camp sites are tight but not as tight as I've seen at a Holiday RV park. You can literally walk to the ocean and beach. Once you are here you basically don't need to leave unless you just want to. We had such a good time with our son and his family. The staff was friendly and it was clean. We would definitely come back here again. read more

Family vacation so we have 5 camping spots all next to each other and very close to the beach. Lucky to be in trees for shade on concrete pads to reduce sand issues. Closer sites do not have shade. Splash pad, lazy river, indoor pool, outdoor pool. Not the most glamorous but very nice. Coffee shop, Trading post store with nice selection and cafe with selection fitting most of families. Hibachi trailer near beach is excellent. Fish fry trailer nearby is adequate. Beach is very nice and accessible. Plenty of daily activities. Hat rides, concerts, bands, church services Sunday and Wednesday. Very good mid stream accommodations. Will return but most probably rent once of the houses next time rather than renting camper trailer. Recommended. . read more

Lakewood is great! There are lakes, pools, golf cart rental, food trucks with great food, ice cream shoppe with delicious Blue bell ice cream. Best of all ocean front rv spots! We got one for the week and man is it nice! Every night we take our little dog and some chairs and sit in front of the waves crashing. Improvements would be: serve decaf coffee at the coffee shop. Have a part of the beach where I can bring my little pup all day. Provide shuttle to the hair salon and back OR It's right next door and really if they allowed us to use our golf carts and the back gate we almost would not leave the property anyways. Rent chairs and umbrella on the beach. We would consider coming back. read more

Don't go during Memorial Day. They allow motorcycles to come to the campsites at all hours of the morning. Mostly around 1and 2am revving them up as loud as they can. They allow people to smoke pot all day and each site with motorcycles has at least 15 people with their party. Rules aren't enforced and it is impossible to let your kids play at your campsite when drugs are apparent and strong. We camp here quite a bit but never again on Memorial day weekend. More 12 year olds driving golf carts than there are adults. Rules say 16 but that isn't enforced either. Lakewood was made aware over 6x about the drugs and amount of people. They either don't care or are scared to say something. read more

My family & I have been vacationing at Lakewood since I was 8 years old. It is the best vacation spot I can imagine. Lots of fun activities for kids and great family atmosphere. I highly recommend Lakewood for any family looking for a nice, relaxing, quiet getaway. It's right on the beach with lots of access to various parts of the campground. There are so many fun activities to do for kids as well. One thing my family really always enjoyed was the amphitheater church services every Sunday. There is an indoor pool and outdoor pool, lazy river, and several water slides as well as a splash pad for little kids. They have an on-site laundromat, a camp store called "The Trading Post" which always has unique and cool souvenirs. Lakewood has been our family go-to vacation spot for many years and we have always loved it there. read more

Lots of rules they don't enforce, loud inappropriate music, foul language, thongs, and tiny bathing suits that did not cover ones wares. Too many golf carts, driving faster than designated speed, plus kids younger than 16 driving them, half the people in the pools had no wristbands. RV site was dirty when we arrived, went around cleaning it up before we sit RV up. Men's bathroom discounting someone used shower as a toilet. They don't know the meaning of customer service. Should be 1-2 stars but they have been good many years ago so we'll give three stars for now. Our family has been coming to this campground since 1987 and while there were many wonderful years spent camping there the past several years have not been good. For the last 10 years my in-laws have rented a villa within the campground and it has progressively gotten worse each year regardless of the reports we've provided to the LCR team. The villa has palmetto bugs, roaches and mice in it. Mouse droppings in the cabinets and drawers. There are holes in the walls as well. There have been a few upgrades within the last 10 years but the cleanliness outweighs the upgrades. The rental rate also went up $150.00 this year but nothing inside the villa has been updated. Within the campground itself, the bathhouses haven't been updated in probably 30 years, yet they are re-painting the pool and updating the corn hole quad. While the upgrades are nice it just seems there are other more important upgrades needed. You are not allowed to bring in your own golf cart. They have a contract with Graham's Golfcarts and will be fined if they allow personal golf carts, except for the home owners. They don't allow reservations for these golf carts either and always run out on holiday weeks like the Fourth of July. This year we watched one family while checking in ask about leaving their golf cart at the front of the resort with security as they needed to unload it so their children could sleep in the toy hauler section, since they had been traveling to other resorts on their way there but were told "no, absolutely not and that they couldn't stay if they took it out of their camper. The family left and I'm sure forfeited their stay and didn't receive a refund. We have also always enjoyed the activities in the activity center however they have stopped doing a lot of those. Being a family campground that should be a priority. The security is over the top. You can't be out walking around or driving a golf cart, even to get back to your campsite without being stopped by security and told to go home after 11pm. We travel with 8 other families and with the lack of customer service, the inability to take (and pay for) your own golf cart and the cleanliness of the campground, the other families have all moved to camping and renting houses at OceanLakes Family Campground. It's sad as this campground has the potential to be great but the people running it are going to run it into the ground. We are so sad to be leaving it after all these years but will enjoy our time next door at OceanLakes Family Campground, with similar amenities but who take customer service seriously! read more

Fun place for first time camping. Well, RVing. I will say the place is super family and group friendly. Lots of activities for the kids. They are pet friendly as well, however, pets are only allowed on the beach before 9 and after 5pm. I will say the most disappointing part is that they aren't very handicap friendly. There's no way for people in a wheelchair to get on the beach and no accommodations. So that's super frustrating. It was nice that there were so many amenities were included. From coffee shop, restaurant, putt putt, kayaking, and so much more. There's really no need to even leave the campgrounds. read more

Sites are crammed together. The site had not been cleaned. You could scrape sand up with a shovel. If you like young kids driving golf carts, flying throughout the park, massive size dogs this is your campground. This place is the biggest ripoff. They charge for receiving an Amazon package, no parking except for golf carts at the beach, which means you have to rent a golf cart, extra charge to park extra car but you end up parking on the Neighbors site. We just left our 4 night stay at Lakewood . We were located in a site right near main pool. Do not recommend if you care about your coach.. total dust pit.. ocean breeze brings flying dirt. The pool was disgusting with way too much many people in it. The water was so cloudy and everything floating on top from hair accessories to band aids. They should look into installing an adult pool. This is a very large campground with over 1,000 sites, as well as hundreds of vacation homes/rentals the pool area is not equipped for that many people. Could not even go in it. Golf carts galore.. risk your life as you move about the campground dodging young kids as they push their reckless driving skills while blasting their boom box radios. On a positive side.. they had a good ice cream shoppe the beach is nice read more

Place is right on the beach our site was the first row directly in front of the beach which was amazing for views. However, every night from 830 - 1100 is golf cart parade and there are under aged children driving golf Carts blasting procaine music. Staff don't try to police it either. This was hard for us because we have Three young children and can't fall asleep because of the noise. The indoor pool was in need of repair, no lifeguard on duty and I'm sure that pool in need of some cleaning. The pool outside and water park was nice though. I would stay in Myrtle beach but would probably try to go to another place because the traffic was so bad all day long right in front of our camper. read more

The stay here was very inconvenient. Everything is full and "taken" that is considered free amenities and/or paid amenities. It's a huge park and they had a waiting list of over 5+ pages of people waiting on golf carts. This wouldn't be as big of an issue if there was parking for cars located near pools and beach. It doesn't help when you have 2 small children and older individuals. When we got here we had no picnic bench and we were told to look around and steal one from another campsite because they were low "due to covid". These are just a few of the ridiculous issues we have ran into. We have complained about a few things because of our experiences and have been told "I'll let them know" and got no call backs. I would definitely recommend Pirateland over this place. Will not be back nor recommending this place to anyone. The one star can be for the beautiful beach this awful RV park resides on. read more

I have stayed at LCR in the past and never had any complaints. This time around is quite different. We were given the option to depart during hurricane Debby which we thought would be best given we were in a camper. The front desk staff stated that we were issued a credit for the remainder of our stay but would be issued a refund if they issued a state of emergency. I never received my refund and contacted the office. They state that they do not issue a refund unless it's a mandatory evac unlike other campgrounds in the area. The front desk staff/ manager was extremely rude when I asked about extending the credit by a month or so since I will not be able to be there before August 2025. She said that "I am trying to get over on them" which I told her I was not, and I felt offended that she would speak to me that way. If you want excellent customer service, this is NOT the place to camp at. read more

This little resort is legit! It is a very retirement friendly kid friendly golf cart community that has its own waterpark which I would definitely go to for free over Dollywood back in Tennessee! The beach is right there they have their own little grocery store ice cream parlor mini golf you name it. Basketball courts playground my family was thrilled to go and it was more than awesome! Hopefully this place is still here after hurricane Florence comes through. Shout out to the little nuggets in life that you never knew were there! It even has a levy going up to the beach to help out with rising tides. Go now and hopefully you know somebody there! read more

The site was a good one. But for no more campers here, no wi-fi or internet??!! Propane down! Called about internet and no one came like promised then called back next morning and they gave us a Phone # to call what! it's not our place!!!!!!! to call!!!!!!! They did come to check on our cable and found out that was our cable so we had another one!! The oceanfront site was better than Pirateland, just our 2nd time ever camping at beach. Dec. 26- Jan. 4. *PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN* I have stayed here a multitude of times, most were fine but during this last visit my 12 year old sister and her two cousins were inside the restroom, while in the restroom they were being loud(which they shouldn't have been doing and usually results in a $100 fine) . They then were yelled at by a women and chased out of the restroom. After exiting the restroom the women followed her screaming and cursing at which point her husband approached the three children screaming and calling them all "sl*ts" for wearing a bikini at the beach. He continued screaming even as my sister was crying from this aggressive mans insults. During which she called me asking for us to hurry back to them. After we arrived security had been called and we were informed that "this establishment doesn't accept this kind of behavior here" at which time we were informed that we were required to leave the premesis or face a trespassing charge. The grown adults who, were screaming slurs at these little girls, were allowed to stay. While this establishment has zero tolerance for children being children, it does allow grown men to scare and insult children right outside of the restroom without coincidence. So in conclusion we were out just under $1000 and left with three kids wondering what's wrong with there body and a three hour drive at 9:30pm. If I could leave this place a lower review I would without hesitation. Amazing place to stay with family and friends. We camped here in our RV with 5 adults and 2 toddlers. This is for sure one of our most favorite vacations. There is so much to do and of great variety. Our teenager was constantly out having fun. The littles had plenty of places to spread out and run. Everyone that works here is amazingly sweet and genuine. The bathrooms are clean and very nice. The coffee house is a great added bonus. The little store has everything we needed at a great price. Quiet hour is very quiet. It's enforced well. If you're looking to get sloppy drunk and party this isn't the place for you. This is geared specifically for families. We will 100% be back again. Went. Saw. Conquered. Took 3 teen girls plus myself. Camping site was aces. Plenty big enough. Super close to the beach. Easy set up. Nice tree. Amenities: coffee shop with cakes and pastries (lovely). Restaurant pretty basic but totally enough for our needs. Shop sold water and ant spray (which as usual we needed) plus lots of other groceries and trinkets, good selection. Walmart and McDonalds across the street if you really needed more. Indoor pool and splash pad water park was great. Free bikes for rental but checking in every 2 hours is tedious. Finally relented and rented a golf cart ($60 a day), girls were ecstatic because late in the evening - golf carts galore. See pics. Parking is pretty limited if you drive you car or truck, most parking is reserved for golf carts. Be aware. We really enjoyed our stay. Would definitely go back. read more

Plenty of security and Beach is maintained well. In off season, not many people, that is a plus. Downside- The bathhouses need a zombie movie filmed there and to be rebuilt. Parking and layout leave much to be desired. Too many golf carts and discarded, decrepit trailers. Pool house was open but in a halfway state of repair. No lifeguard and water needed cleaning. Few advertised amenities are open. Site reminded me of an outdoor movie lot. It is time to hire an architect and create an illusion of nature and upkeep read more

This is not fun. Underage kids running golf carts, fireworks every night after we put the kids asleep, they wake up crying, our dog has to take sedatives because of all the bombs going off. Never will we return. Kids at 1:30 am roaming the park putting off firecrackers. No guards responding. This is not peaceful, it's hell. read more

Upon winding up a cross-country trip, I thought it would be nice to spend a night at the Campground (Lakewood), where I spent so many pleasurable times, as a child with my family. [Keep in mind, as I previously note, we were finishing a 6+ week cross country trip (i.e. we have been to a large number of campgrounds all across the country).] 1) The Lakewood nightly rate is one of the highest of any Campgrounds we have stayed (almost double). 2) The bathrooms looked like those of years past. Meaning, basically, the same as those I went to 35 years ago. Even had a urinal sitting on a wooden box (nasty). 3) The Icing on the Cake - Check-out is 10:00AM (the earliest of any campground we have ever been to). Upon checking in, we were informed that we could not obtain a late check out (not allowed due to policy), nor park in overflow parking. However, if we wanted, we could pay a half-day rate (the rate most campgrounds charge for overnight stay), and we could stay and have access until 6:00PM. Begrudgingly, we elected to take this option. Prior to 9:00AM of check-out, we walked to the main office, asking to pay the half-day rate, to be informed we could NOT do so. After inquiring, we were told that someone had reserved our specific campsite. However, one must recognize that check-in is 4:00PM (a 6 hour difference between check-out and check-in). As well, there was a plethora of open campsites, directly around us (Premium sites, as they are called), and along Main street there were rows of open sites. Hence, we asked, can we pay the half-day rate and depart at 2:00 or 3:00PM (i.e. before the posted check-in time, and cutting ourselves short of the previously informed 6:00PM)? We were informed, NO. As a matter of fact, no alternatives, such as parking in overflow or another campsite were even offered/mentioned. Very nice, and well kept. The only hiccup was the fact that the resort was not transparent about personal golf cart use. We were told that we could use our personal golf carts and had to rent one from them. That is an important feature that should be highlight on the site. Another issue is that we overheard one of the younger employees tell another customer that the golf cart could be registered versus renting one. I agree with one rater about the cars that are allowed to park in common areas, making it hard for the RVs to get around while looking for the spots. I even saw a car parked in the areas marked for golf carts :( read more

I was a first timer camper at Lakewood. The map they give you is illegible. Could not read a single campsite number nor street name for reference. At check in I was told my campsite number and go straight then turn left. I spent 45 minutes in a 33 ft motorhome navigating one street at the time trying to find my campsite. At one point I ended up in the cabins area and a dead-end road. That was interesting to back out of with no assistance. The beach area was beautiful, but didn't use any of the facilities to form opinion on those. I just found it extremely difficult to find my way around. Once in my camp site extensions where needed to electricity and sewer which flowed uphill. I will never go back to Lakewood. There are two many other options available to deal with that type frustrations. I was to the point of leaving for home, vacation was ruined by then. WIFI is non existent also. read more

Beautiful campground on the ocean. Amenities are nice, clean pools and plenty to do without leaving the resort. Stocked store. A lot of gulf carts driving around and some driving a little dangerously, I nearly was hit by a young driver that was racing another teen on foot, and also at night they chase each other around sometimes turning off their lights to not be seen by another. Bathrooms are dated but mostly clean. The shower I used backed up so I was standing in water while showering. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Overall I really liked this campground and plan to go back. read more

I'll start with our arrival. There's a separate check in area for non-rv guests. We were informed where to turn around from the girl at the booth then were stopped and questioned by security when we tried to turn around. It almost felt like a police stop. There's a LOT of security here and they seem a bit overzealous to say the least. We're not avid campers. We're not campers at all but our friends who are said this much security is definitely not normal in other campgrounds. The entire campground appears old and in need of updating. For example.. the tiles lining the pool are in disrepair and missing in multiple spots. The majority of the rental units, incl. ours, appear to be nearing their inhabitable lifespans. Next... the golf cart rental is only open until 5 but check in is at 4, so after settling in you don't have time to get a golf cart until day 2. The ice cream shop only opens at 5pm so if you're sweating all day and would like a refreshing ice cream cone you're out of luck. When open it's very good. Apparently no one here drinks coffee in the afternoon because the coffee shop closes at noon. Also.. very good when open. Tuesday the outdoor pool was closed because of mechanical issues. We didn't see anyone working on anything. The waterpark is 3 slides and a lazy river that's so packed you barely move. Apparently covid isn't contagious over water but don't walk into any of the facilities without a mask on. My friend was issued a $75 "ticket" for driving his golf cart back to his site from our site after 11pm. He told my friend this is because there's vagrants who sneak in from the beach to steal peoples beers. I'm not making this up. Over $300/week to rent a golf cart then pay a fine for driving home. See "overzealous security" mentioned earlier. There's really not much to do here other than the beach which at least is pretty clean and somehow never packed. To sum Lakewood up, the video is very deceiving. The "lake" is kinda gross, the waterpark is small, the grounds are not well maintained, and the rental units are top dollar yet run down. 100% I would never come here again. We go to the Outer Banks pretty often and there's no comparison. We should've stuck with that. I feel like this entire Myrtle Beach area, as well as Lakewood, was a great vacation spot 30 years ago but is in desperate need of updating. The entire strip is cheesy buffets, tourist trap "surf shops" and RV parks. Sounds crazy and it'll never happen but knock down everything on the main road, start over, and do it right. read more
