Brought my car here as a new resident because of a check engine light. Lam seemed to take on a fatherly approach when working with me. I trusted him and paid $400 to have a part replaced but they didn't provide any paperwork besides a small receipt that doesn't explain what I paid for. This was my first red flag. The check engine light came on two weeks later and they said I'd need another $800+ worth of work. I felt less confident and didn't trust this would fix the problem, so I declined and got a second opinion. I thought I was in good hands but I realized Lam may be trying to throw things at the car to fix it temporarily. Im looking for a better approach than that. After my visits, I'm not sure if I trust Lam or his kindness since I don't have any proof he worked on my car. Documentation is so important. I was nervous and uncomfortable to ask for my paperwork even though I spent $400. If this happens to you ask for your paperwork! I really regret not asking for mine. read more

My car started over heating a few days ago so I called a mechanic and it was this one. He looked in there (under my hood ) and he took his flashlight and showed me around under my car's hood, I seen wet spots and bone dry spots . I have to give two stars because I felt worked as a women today trying to get her brakes done. I never believed people when they said women should never go to shops alone but today I felt every bit of that. I called to get a quote yesterday and told them that I had my brakes and all of the items needed, they quoted me $100 for service I said great I will be there in the morning. When I came in the morning I showed them what I had and confirmed the $100 price, explained I was selling my car and didn't need anything more than the brakes I bought and rotors replaced that I also bought. They called me to tell me that I had the wrong front brakes, okay, that is fine give me the cheapest correct brakes and I will get my money back for the wrongs one. They call me a couple of hours later to say my car is done and the total is $300! How did we go from $100 to $300, what if I didn't have the $300 to give, in which I really didn't but I felt cornered! That's why I called ahead to get a quote from a couple of places and they were the best! He then told me no I said $100 for the back and $100 for the front( I think I would of understood $200 from $100, language barrier or not) You charge $200 to service someones car that already has the items! I came here because of a coolant leak and they told me it was the housing even though I replaced the housing not long ago. I told them this. The old man with the gray hair was adamant it was that. A week later after the repair/replacement, all of the coolant in my car was gone. They didn't fix anything. They made things much worse. I took it back to them and they told me this is just a new problem with my car even though I knew the leak was coming from somewhere else. They said it was the pump that needs to be replaced now. No refund or anything. This is why we don't trust mechanics. These guys are absolute thieves. read more

The worst part of moving to a new city is finding your new, trustworthy mechanic. I'm very glad to have met Mr. Lam! I drove in with no appointment and he took great care of me. I tossed four or five issues at him and he didn't blink. Said he'd call me later to talk about it. When he called, he explained things very calmly and thoroughly. My van was having transmission issues I believe by it slipping, clunking when shifting, revving up, etc. , I took it to ACA Automotive and they told me that I needed a new transmission and that job would cost almost $6,000 to repair. Our van is over 10 years old with over 150,000 miles - Not sure we wanted to put that much money into a used car. I decided to get a 2nd opinion. When Lam took a look at it, he stated that he didn't believe that there was anything wrong with the transmission and that he would hate for me to spend that type of money. He recommended that I take it to the dealership for a full computer diagnostics. He was right, the transmission was fine. Our motor mounts were cracked, our transmission was leaking and the thermostat needed replacing. ACA would have charged almost $6,000 and the dealer would have charged us $2,500 for this job and he charged me $1,350 and had my van for only 1 day. His honesty earned my trust and business. I went in on a Saturday on a whim after calling a few other repair shops in Long Beach. I know very little about car repair, but I have a few friends I can check in with to make sure I'm not getting cheated. The places I called all quoted me double what Lam did, and even I could tell from that that Lam was giving me a fair rate. I had to get my brake pads changed, and found out I needed one new rotor as well. Lam's crew got it done super fast, and to sweeten the deal, there was a brand new 3-month old puppy to play with in the waiting room. Mmmmm, Lam. We went to LAM because at the time he had 51 reviews with a 4 1/2 star rating. I mentioned this to him and the older Asian man just nodded his head, wondering what the internet is. LAM is not what you would expect. The corner yard looked like a Pick a Part, with a gang of middle aged Cambodians strolling around like a game of Russian Roulette could break out at any time. The waiting area was a trailer with a current newspaper and a TV playing Bewitched, with some burnt plastic furnture outside with a grey cat choking on some old school fishbone. The estimate I received was verbal only, and my receipt was merely a business card with the amt paid and date on the back. Shit, no paperwork. I could immediately imagine Judge Judy screaming at me for accepting it. Ah, but that's the thing: the places with the coffeemaker, air conditioning, assorted magazines, cable TV, and catless patios with their fancy, triple carbon copies... those are the jokers who often are dishonest, trying to top your "air filter fluid" for $45, telling you that the Pennysaver coupon you brought in doesn't include parts or labor. So... I went in for a simple brake job, but I was worried that I would be sold (legitmately or not) extra rotor-related services because my brakes were suddenly metal on metal (I didn't hear the telltale squeak). But, the estimate stayed $100, which was what they estimated before checking the brakes, which was what they estimated over the phone. And the price when I returned from the 99 cent store across the street... $100. That's 100 Jesus candles!! That's 100 boxes of lead-based Oreo knockoffs!! No tax. No brake pad disposal fees. I stumbled onto this little gem of a shop a few months ago. Since my teenage son as an older model car, we've been back a few times. Mr. Lam is fast and inexpensive. Both times I've dropped the car and expected to leave it overnight, he had purchased the part and repaired the car before I could even get back home. Keeping in mind, both jobs were relatively small. Was having issue with my truck, thought maybe it was the alternator so I went to autozone to have them test it, they said I needed a new one, figure why not ask again, so I go to another autozone and same thing, they say I need to buy another one. So I go to shop by my house, to the counter and tell a guy about what autozone said, and I need to replace the alternator, he gets up, grabs a tester, and says no you don't need new one, im like but autozone says I do, he says I'll change it for you, but you don't need. To this day haven't needed a new alternator, So yeah I've been going to them since. You will see Lam behind the counter, he's a straight forward honest nice guy. I'm so glad I chose this place today. Lam is so honest with his work. Pep boys quoted me $180.00 for front brakes after waiting 3 hours on a free brake inspection. I said thanks but no thanks and went home. When I got home, I started looking on yelp for get repair guys in long beach and lam popped up number one. After reading reviews, I decided to give it a shot that next morning. I got there right at 8 and I just played dumb like I was just coming to check brake levels. He said the same thing as pep boys but he have me top notch dura last ceramic brakes and charged me $100 even out the door. He also resurfaced me rotors and topped off all of my fluids. Honest people. My 03 Civic needed the clutch safety switches repaired. I was told it could be both switches and that it would be $350 but maybe it could be lower depending on if one switch needed to be replaced. I was called and told only one switch was bad and that it would be $200. The guy could have easily told me it was both switches and pocketed the extra. Took my Honda crv on 11.11.21 a/c blowing hot air. But befor i went to lams i was at Honda service department 11.7.21 and the 11.4.21 a/c blowing hot air. Honda said no freon sk the did there test with the dyr stated a leak come back at 100 miles for more inspection. They stated again that they put more dye and need new condenser. Lies!!!! Honda didn't do anything but charged me $256 and lied. Lam auto tested a/c put dye looked for leaks with light doing none. Put freon charged $120 cold air blowing now. Very honest business man. I will not ever go back to Honda. David is a liar its all about making money and not fixing the issues. Lam said i did not need new condenser no leaks amd there was never freon in unit. gave them a running car to go get a valve cover gasket replaced after putting on new spark plugs and coil packs ALONG with parts and only paid labor $300 for them to give me a car that was not running good because of their mistake switching pipes and not marking them, ALSO the seal from the gasket ripped completely after a few days and looked like it was krazy glued on... horrible work THEN they claimed that we had a head blown gasket after we brought back the car to show them what they did wrong. read more

Took my 98 Toyota 4Runner here after getting a ridiculous price quote from ACA Automotive. I am so glad I made that decision. I got so much more service repairs for the price I paid at Lam's vs what I would have paid at ACA. Not just that, but now I have a trustworthy mechanic with reasonable pricing which seem to be hard to find these days. They essentially fixed a leak under my rear differential by replacing the housing seal, replaced my front rotors with new ones along with new brake pads, and adjusted my rear drum brakes for the same price ACA Automotive was charging me just to replace the housing seal only! Definitely consider this place for any of your vehicle needs. I now plan to bring my bmw here for repairs as well now that I know Lam is an honest mechanic with reasonable prices. I came to Lam Auto Repair because I had a loud noise coming from behind my tire. I was referred by a friend because I don't know Long Beach that well. When I called the guy said to come any time just not too late. I got in my car immediately and got there around 12:45. The guy said that he would check it out but that they were all going to lunch. I said that's fine I would go to the movies and he can call me. He told me not to go because if he calls me he can't do anything unless I answer the phone. Again I was understanding so I walked around until 1:30 when he said it would be checked out. At 1:30 I came back and my car was parked in the exact same place. I wasn't upset I was just confused so I went into the lounge area and he said he would check it out in ten minutes. Twenty minutes rolled by and he came back with my car and said he heard the noise. I told him it's my dads car and my dad wanted to know what was wrong with it because he's a mechanic. The guy snapped at me and said "I can't know unless I take off the wheel. If you don't want to wait you can come back on Monday or take your car somewhere else. If your dad is a mechanic take it to him." I didn't understand why he was being so rude because I was so patient. I literally had nothing going on that day and I already told him I would leave so they can take their time. By then I realized that he was obviously too rude and unprofessional. All I wanted was my car fixed but he clearly didn't want my money. So I told him to give me my key back and that I would go somewhere else and he said "fine, take your car we don't want to fix it." I will never go back here again. WOW! I truly can't believe these guys... AND AGAIN!!! This time, my girlfriends car's back break lights weren't turning off... even when the car was off... We were worried about an electrical problem, something with the wiring... bad news all the way around. But since this guy was so nice last time, we took it in here again... We dropped it off around 3:30, expecting to get a call back the next day. He called AN HOUR LATER! Said, "oh, it's done, come pick it up". We drove back, and he explained that her car had a small plastic contact pad that pushes the break light switch when the pedal is released. If these pads break or fall out, the pedal will not push the switch enough when released. And wouldn't ya know it, that pad had broken off! He put in a new one, replaced a bulb, and poof, problem solved! We said thanks and asked how much we owed him... and AGAIN, he said, "Oh, small no, no charge." WWHHHAAATTTTT!!!!!!!! Mr. Lam is one of my favorite people in all of Long Beach. I take my car to the dealership to get my oil changed, and then Mr. Lam for the repairs I'm told are needed. I needed something fixed on my car, because my oil was leaking. The dealership told me it would cost me $420. Mr. Lam did it for $200. The next time I took my car back to the dealership they said the oil was still leaking, my tire rods were torn, and that the wires on my battery were corroded. I went back to Mr. Lam and said, "My oil is still leaking. You didn't fix it!" Long story short, he shined a flashlight in my car, and showed me that I needed a new cap for my antifreeze. It was my antifreeze leaking, not my oil. So I went to Autozone myself and got a new cap, and that completely fixed the problem. When my car was up in the air he showed me that my tire rods were not torn. So I asked, "How much to fix the corroded wires?" He quoted me $25. When I went back to pick up my car he told me I didn't owe him a thing. He is super honest. I can always depend on him to not lie that my car has any more problems than it actually does. I'm from the Midwest and am used to my farmer dad fixing my car. I find that I know more about cars from growing up on the farm then most guys in California. I went to Mr. Lam because of his #1 rating on Yelp. My doorman later on told me that his family has been taking their cars to Mr. Lam for years. The guys at AutoZone know him too, and said, "He is the best around." So in this review he gets recommendations from at least 3 different people. Best in town folks! The negative reviews are outnumbered 20:1. Your odds will not be better any other place. Years later I just have to update this just so you know how Mr. Lam is. I moved to Miami for a year and the mechanic there literally jacked up my car. I have had my check battery light flip on, but the battery is belrand new and 2 other mechanics have said there is no issue with the alternator orstarter. Finally Mr. Lam told me today that only an electrician can figure out the issue. If he can't do the fix then he is an amazing resource! read more
