Went here with my boyfriend on Friday. I guess we went during their busy time but it was super packed. My bf and I both got an vanilla almond latte. We waited about 4 minutes or so, not too long. The guys who worked there weren't very friendly, and one of them got snappy with my bf because we've never been there before and weren't exactly sure how to go about waiting for our orders. Stopped here for some iced vanilla lattes and and board games with my sister on a Sunday morning. I have been to one other Lamplighter location before, but it was my first time at this location. Situated on a corner amidst a bunch of apartment buildings and townhouses, this coffee shop looks unassuming from the outside. But if you are native to Richmond, especially if you are a VCU student, you'll know that Lamplighter is a staple. Oddly enough, I never tried the popular cafe until I became an alumni and moved away - but my case is certainly not the norm. I wish I had discovered Lamplighter long ago. Great beverages, and though I haven't gotten to try their baked good or sandwiches yet, I have heard great things from my friends. The inside of this location was more cramped and dimly lit than the other location I visited some years ago, but the quality of the drinks and the friendly attitudes of the baristas had a large crowd gathered outside the doors. Coffee and their other menu items are good. The cheddar and goat cheese grits are A+ though not always available and not at every location I've learned. Local residents seem to unexplainably love this place which is pretty cool. They deserve to be busy, but it's some times not worth the hassle or the wait. Prices have always been a bit much, plus the new Richmond City tax plus the tip they expect for the cashier make it a bit much. Everything does always taste good. Service is fine. Staff at times are "too cool for school" though are usually at least some version of friendly. Glad to see them busy. But, they could do better. read more

And I tried my sister's Maple Oat Latte- amazing! Absolutely love this place. The vibe is chill, relaxing and casual, and the food is amazing. Their freshly brewed coffee is always delicious for any day. If you're looking for that extra punch of coffee, I recommend the Thai coffee, which is one of the best that I've had. I got their Muna Module sandwich and I was 100% pleased. The serving size was big - I had to take the other half to go. I got the goat cheese and cheddar grits for the side and the texture of that was very nice. Pretty good coffee + sandwiches, and a medium amount of indoor + outdoor seating (though it's a bit tight). It does get a bit crowded, especially on a Saturday morning. However, they are open early on the weekends and the customers are a good mix of families, students, etc. The entrance to order your food is on your right. Menus to your left as you enter. If you want just a tiny bit of coffee, they do have the 8oz option instead of the regular 12oz smalls. Next, go ahead and find seating if you haven't already. They'll call your name when your drink's ready. Food-wise, it takes a while for them to prep/cook it. A server with your food will come around calling your name. For me, my breakfast sandwich took a good 10-15min. What I got: - 12oz Lamplighter house coffee regular ($2.00 or so). I absolutely love the organic honey and soy milk options. - Asparagus, cheese, tomato egg breakfast sandwich ($4.75). Great combo of veggies plus protein. Overall, quite delicious. The breakfast sandwich comes with a "fruit"--tangerine, in my case. Wi-Fi is available as well. Note about parking: They only have a few spots in front of the cafe. The rest is street parking. It wasn't hard to find parking spaces when I got there, but just beware that you may have to make a few rounds with the 1-way streets around there before finding parking. read more

Took my parents to grab an afternoon coffee and chat before heading out to run an errand and go to dinner. While I do like their coffee and presentation (see picture) as well as a lot of the specials on the menu board, I probably won't be a regular of this place since I don't live close by. There was one person working there that was talking to their co-worker, in front of customers, that wasn't doing anything besides walking around in a frenzy and then distracting them while they were making people's orders. Once we had gotten our drinks, we sat inside. It was hard to hold a conversation while the music was rapping about ass shaking. This is an awesome Hipster Haven that serves a good cup of coffee and delicious sandwiches. I love that it's a converted auto station; it's a good example of "upcyling" an establishment. I always order the "Goat Herders Mistress" sandwich with goat cheese, grilled fennel, leeks, asparagus, and capicola with a side of fruit salad. The fruit salad has kiwi seeds and some kind of citrus dressing and it totally rocks. Service is friendly and there's seating in the interior and exterior but it's fairly limited; going with a group during peak hours wouldn't be ideal. Since Lamplighter is a coffeehouse, people tend to linger at tables for awhile with their coffees while they read and do work but I like how you won't feel rushed if you want to sit down for several hours. I am in no way being rhetorical when I say Lamplighter is my favorite place in Richmond. It's very existence would make moving back here tolerable. The coffee is San Francisco good (meaning better than Portland or Seattle swill) and the food is perfect for what it is. I am especially fond of "The Katie" with humus on a garlic bagel and the Srirachi-maple glazed pork sausage egg Sammy (with cheddar and tomatoes on sandwich pressed bread) For me, Sundays are for brunch and day drinking, Saturdays are for 9 cups of coffee and reading 3 papers and 5 magazines at a coffee shop while no one talks to me. If Lamplighter existed in any of the other cites I live/lived in (SF, LA, Austin, NYC) it would seriously be my first choice of coffee shops in ANY of them. This place F'ing rules on a warm Saturday. It's perfect. Also, I wanna make out with the redhead behind the register. We live around the corner from Lamplighter and have talked about trying it for about a month. We decided to get delivery since it's so close and usually crowded and we were NOT disappointed. We both got the Muna Module and while it isn't listed as a breakfast sandwich on the menu, it was the best breakfast sandwich I have EVER had. The delivery was fast and it was still warm when we sat down to eat. The deviled eggs were a delicious bonus also, but the fruit salad was a bit strange and had a citrus-y juice added to it. I'll get straight to the point: Location: in the middle of a residential area, almost looks like it used to be a gas station. Street parking can be limited if it's busy. Seating can be limited inside, but there's more outside seating. Coffee: I ordered a Black Eye with soy. I'm not sure if it was the espresso, or the soy milk, but something tasted a little off. I tend to be a stickler with my coffee (I just can't help it). Maybe just a regular coffee would've been better. Food: I ordered the Vandenberghimer sandwich (Honey balsamic glazed tofu with grilled asparagus and sundried tomato on focaccia) and my sister ordered the Cometbus sandwich (Tofu salad with veganaise, olive tapenade, basil, onions, tomato, and mixed greens). Our food took a really long time, especially my sandwich. It was just okay, and I loved the deviled eggs I ordered as my side. My sister's sandwich was amazing though. There was just something about that tofu salad. It was soo good I considered ordering one to go! I think I would just come back here for food...and maybe to try their regular coffee. Lamplighter is a new favorite of mine! I came here for breakfast one morning with the boyfriend and roomies and we really enjoyed it! Here's a list of everything we tried: -Thai Coffee- Incredibly light but still very flavorful! -The "Black Eye"- Standard black coffee, but with an extra shot of espresso. No bells and whistles, but a great cup of coffee to wake you up! -Twin Oaks Breakfast Sandwich- This sandwich was massive! It was a hearty sammy with soy chroizo and avocado, and I really loved the bread it was on. -The Quilt- A BLT with quilted bacon? How cool is that! The garlic aioli on this was delicious. -Buffalo 66- I love tempeh, and the spicy marinated tempeh in this sandwich was no exception. It could definitely pass as chicken if no one told you it was tempeh! -Mac 'N 'Cheese- This was not my favorite. The macaroni was swimming in what seemed like liquid cheese - definitely not for me. Each sandwich comes with a side, and my advice is not to go for the cheesy grits. They sounded amazing, but they were unfortunately pretty flavorless and unappetizing. We added lots of salt and hot sauce, but I think it was a lost cause! I'll be trying their other sides with my sandwiches in the future. read more

Holy Goodness, Lamplighter! How have I not been here yet?! The brown sugar latte is just about the best latte I've ever had. I also ordered a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheddar, and tomato on gluten-free bread which was delicious. (They even included a wedge of orange in my take out bag...sometimes, it's the little things, you know?) By the looks of their menu, they seemed to have lots of vegetarian options and choices of gluten-free bread. Place is cute, trendy, and hipster-ish. This is the closest coffee shop to work, and a favorite afternoon break for myself and coworkers. I generally get a hot or iced tea and a croissant as an afternoon snack. The location is cute, I love the added touch of the metal bike sculpture out front. There is a decent amount of seating both inside and on the patio. I do wish that there was a diverse selection of iced teas, but that's just because I'm a tea drinker in a coffee world. The atmosphere can be a bit intimidating if you aren't used to the "hipster" coffee shop vibe, but everyone is super friendly! I've been to the cafe on Morris Street three times now, and their cappuccinos are top notch. The baristas are constantly using a scale to aim for the perfect extraction. As a warning, I am a coffee nerd in the making. I tend to enjoy local roasters wherever I travel. So far my preference is mild, low acid coffees with complexity but not fruit notes. That's my perspective and bias. Drip coffee served today tended to be heavy and bitter with a hint of nut (good) and fruit. After realizing it was not mild and complex enough for me to drink black I tried it with cream. The cream covered the complexity and the fat in the cream picked up the bitter and delivered straight to the tongue. Solid jolt of caffeine! I had a bigger jolt of caffeine off of this than I get from the Red Bull I use for working nights. Might return to try a pour over. Unique and varied menu. Enjoyed the kale slaw and deviled eggs. Kale slaw was tangy and I was just happy to have deviled eggs. Enjoyed the neighborhood environment and the people. It's a good place. I love the small local roasters. Perhaps their coffee selection and flavors will cater more to your palate than it did mine. read more

Lamplighter coffee warms that little hipster place in my heart. Lamplighter is one of my favorite local coffee shops. There are two locations in the city, located on Morris St. and Addison St. If you want to relax and enjoy your coffee, the Addison street location is the only way to go. Parking is a lot less hectic, not as crowded, and open seating. Morris St. is right in the middle of VCU territory, the only justification for going here is if you want to get some people watching in, otherwise stay away. The baristas here know how to make a very good cup of coffee and how to decorate it in a way to make you feel fancy. My favorite for the summer has to be the Thai Iced coffee, rich, strong, and just the right amount of sweet. On the cooler days I stick to the Brown Sugar Baby, light, creamy, and sweet without being too overbearing. Even though my two favorite drinks are sweet it's presented in away that you still know you are drinking what you came there for, coffee. This is a great quick brunch spot, their food is awesome! My favorite sandwich is the Soy Chorizo, Twin Oaks chorizo, havarti, avocado, and tomato. It's filling, rich, and has the smallest hint of spice from the scrumptious Twin Oaks chorizo. I have a hard time getting anything else on the menu because that sandwich is just too amazing. Lamplighter also does this wonderful thing where they sell breakfast all day long. I love Lamplighter Coffee, this location is a little more cozier than the Morris St. location. Lamplighter has great food and coffee drinks, I really enjoy the Vietnamese iced coffee. I feel like the other Lamplighter is a better location for families with young kids, since they have open grass area to play. However, this location has a giant chalk board in the screened outdoor area that kids and adults can draw on. There are also cool hipster thrift stores near by if that's your jam. read more

I only saw the chalkboard menu & quickly ordered a basic latte, it was good BUT I had buyers' remorse because I found the smaller paper menus which included more coffee options and a flavorful looking breakfast options. I read my book at the bar and sipped my perfectly created basic latte. I liked the vibe & felt like a college kid, even overheard some youngsters discussing politics & Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She was very polite and both my food and coffee came with reasonable speed whilst I poked about on the internet at my table. The food was pretty tasty- won't lie there, but my coffee... Disclaimer- I'm obscenely picky about coffee. I can't drink dark roast. I have... difficulty with medium roast from time to time. What came in my cup at Lamplighter was... dark. Bitter. I literally couldn't add enough dairy to make it palatable, which is strange because enough cream will usually take the edge off.
