Lamplighter coffee warms that little hipster place in my heart. Lamplighter is one of my favorite local coffee shops. There are two locations in the city, located on Morris St. and Addison St. If you want to relax and enjoy your coffee, the Addison street location is the only way to go. Parking is a lot less hectic, not as crowded, and open seating. Morris St. is right in the middle of VCU territory, the only justification for going here is if you want to get some people watching in, otherwise stay away. The baristas here know how to make a very good cup of coffee and how to decorate it in a way to make you feel fancy. My favorite for the summer has to be the Thai Iced coffee, rich, strong, and just the right amount of sweet. On the cooler days I stick to the Brown Sugar Baby, light, creamy, and sweet without being too overbearing. Even though my two favorite drinks are sweet it's presented in away that you still know you are drinking what you came there for, coffee. This is a great quick brunch spot, their food is awesome! My favorite sandwich is the Soy Chorizo, Twin Oaks chorizo, havarti, avocado, and tomato. It's filling, rich, and has the smallest hint of spice from the scrumptious Twin Oaks chorizo. I have a hard time getting anything else on the menu because that sandwich is just too amazing. Lamplighter also does this wonderful thing where they sell breakfast all day long. I have friends that may shank me for not giving this place five stars but I'm afraid it's the best I can do. The menu is extensive... sufficiently extensive that it took me a while to get through [I was in no hurry anyhow, waiting for a friend who ended up having to cancel so...] and it took some effort to get the cashier's attention once i decided what i wanted. She was very polite and both my food and coffee came with reasonable speed whilst I poked about on the internet at my table. The food was pretty tasty- won't lie there, but my coffee... Disclaimer- I'm obscenely picky about coffee. I can't drink dark roast. I have... difficulty with medium roast from time to time. What came in my cup at Lamplighter was... dark. Bitter. I literally couldn't add enough dairy to make it palatable, which is strange because enough cream will usually take the edge off. I cannot in good conscience give more stars to a place named for coffee if I can't drink the stuff I'm served, however tasty the food was. read more

I heard this place was rated best coffee shop in Virginia, and I must say, it lived up to the hype. Lamplighter has one of the best, if not the best coffee I've ever had. I had a lavender latte when I stopped in one day with an Oreo doughnut (yes it was decadent). My boyfriend had the Guatemalan drip coffee, and we ended up buying bags of their coffee as gifts for our coffee-loving friends, as well as some for us to enjoy. We wanted to get lunch, but didn't realize the lunch menus were behind us on the counter until after we ordered. It'd be great if the food was listed by the drinks, but the food coming from the kitchen looked great! This coffee shop is super hipster (there's even a thrift store right across the street). Though this place is small with little indoor seating, it doesn't fail to roll in the customers. It is charming with friendly staff and good service. This is a coffee shop that was recommended to me by a friend. This is my second time coming to this establishment and I wasn't disappointed either time. The coffee brewed here has a nice flavor and I like black coffee so this place is a hit for me. I ordered a maple siracha sausage breakfast sandwich. It came with your choice of pork or veggie sausage on a soft bun. Also, it has an egg, cheese and a nice touch of tomato slices. It pretty tasty w a small kick. The staff was friendly and will give you a WiFi password if you want to get work done here. Nice place to relax to go and get out of the office for a few. read more

Best iced coffee is located here! I typically don't like the drink, but after a friend recommended it, I had to try it. She was right - Lamplighter has the best iced coffee. I didn't have to add any cream or sugar, and it was delicious. The coffee flavor was on point. It had taken me three tries before being able to actually park and walk into this location. In the morning, every parking spot is taken, so it's clear to me that everyone knows about this Lamplighter and fills it up right after it opens for business. On the weekends, though, it's a little easier to find a spot. Once inside, it's a little dark and I had to wait a little while before someone came out to take my order. I'd be interested to try other drinks here. Bottom line: this flagship location makes great coffee! read more

This is my favorite place for breakfast, lunch, and coffee in Richmond. Three of us had a delicious lunch there today. I had a breakfast egg sandwich with soy chorizo and tomato and it was perfect as was the coffee. Husband liked his apple bottom turkey sandwich and daughter loved her comet bus sandwich. She is vegan and said this was her favorite sandwich so far. We sat at a picnic table outside in the sun which was nice. They have indoor seating too. (If u are dining as a single person with a laptop, would u take up an indoor table for 4?) The staff was friendly and courteous. It is a good place to bring your dog. I prefer this location to the Morris St. location. The iced coffee has a nice bold flavor, but it was also smooth. I don't get that much flavor from other iced coffees and loved the Lamplighter iced coffee! Nothing is diluted and the coffee is strong. My friend and I split the lox everything bagel, and we both agreed it was delicious. The toppings were so fresh and it was a wonderful size for two people to share as a snack/small meal. There isn't a ton of space inside, but I appreciated the decent amount of outdoor seating. A nice place to sit and relax when the weather is nice. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and this dreary cold day was the perfect stop before running my errands. I had past the Morris location when I had an idea to grab something warm to drink, luckily the Addison location was on my way! walking in I was very confused and the nice guy behind the counter could clearly tell I had never been there. he helped me out by directing me to the menu and explaining everything. I ended up with the brown sugar latte with almond milk (I said soy milk but the guy behind the counter said it would work better with almond). now on to the latte. it was interesting. good but interesting! it grew on me with every sip I took. I was contemplating getting a 12oz but I ended up getting the smaller size and I'm glad I did. I would love to go back and try the food and maybe some other drinks. the iced drinks sounded really refreshing on a hot day. read more

My fam got capps or lattes which are too fancy for my taste but they liked them. I ended up buying a bag of whole beans which comes with a free cup of coffee. Good deal. I got the standard breakfast sandwich; egg, sausage, cheese but it also came with avocado. It was good but not great. My bro-in-law got the ranchero sandwich and it was super awesome. I've been going to Lamplighter for years, trying to see what others love here, and... I just don't get it. There's great things about Lamplighter, but they just miss the mark in my book. For starters, you never know what kind of service you're going to get at any location. Sometimes, you'll have your drink in 5 minutes, sometimes 30 - don't plan on making a "quick stop for a latte," because it may not be quick at all. Sometimes you'll have someone friendly taking your order (I've easily spent 20 minutes having great conversations with the owner at this location and the Summit Ave. location), other times you can barely hear them over the other employees yelling at each other over the rumble of the La Marzocco. Which, I will say, serves up some excellent espresso - smooth and sweet, very third wave. It's great espresso on its own. This specific location feels like a trashy punk rock college dive bar that serves coffee instead of PBR. There's always good music playing and upcoming events posted, almost a little bit nostalgic, but it just feels cramped and dirty. There's a great outdoor area if you don't mind staring into neighboring homes and at the fronts of cars - it's cute and quaint, and you can bring your dog, but it just feels retrofitted (and, considering it used to be a gas station, that makes sense). There's also a secondary seating area that just feels like someone bolted on a Nags Head shrimp shack to the side. Sure, you can hang out there, but it doesn't even remotely feel like part of the same establishment. If you're the kind of person that likes to put sweetener in their coffee or espresso, you probably should just go somewhere else. Sugar, agave, etc. - the all natural stuff - it's there, and that is certainly a better and healthier option. With third wave coffee establishments, the coffee should be sweet and stand on its own. But if you like things a little sweeter and like using Splenda, Equal, or Sweet-n-low - too bad. The same thing goes for a limited selection of drink flavorings. It looks like they make their own flavorings (which is awesome!), but they're bland choices - vanilla, brown sugar, etc. I feel like caramel is a staple these days and they don't have it. But they have lavender, if that's your thing (which is just not a flavor I want in any sort of coffee or espresso drink). As far as the food is concerned, this is vegan paradise. For someone, like myself, that just wants a BLT or a turkey sandwich without half a garden on top of it, the options are few and far between. Healthy options, sure, and they are delicious, but just not what I want most days. Will I come back here? Yeah, definitely. I have been going to Lamplighter for years, hoping for more options. I go in there to buy beans quite often. What they do have is very good. I just always feel like there's something missing, and some of the things aren't exactly approachable for many. If I want healthy food, Pit and Peel is a more approachable choice. If I want great coffee, I'll go out of my way to go to Alchemy or Black Hand. But, even though I can walk to Lamplighter, I'll go out of my way most days for something else. read more

I come from a family who grows coffee in Central America, so I am a bit of a coffee snob, but lamplighter has hands down the best coffee in RVA. The iced coffee is on point, and their lavender latte is one of my favorites! The ambience is nice and feels like a good neighborhood coffee house- the modern building is beautiful and the huge windows let in a lot of natural light which I personally love. The food is always super good as well and the orange slices they add to plates are always surprisingly damn good- small details make a huge difference! I definitely recommend. read more

Welp. My feelings toward Lamplighter have totally changed. I came to this location for a lunch meeting the other day and loved it. I ordered a BLT and chai tea latte with almond milk. The woman who helped me behind the counter was super patient when it took forever for me to decide on what I wanted to order. There were so many items on the menu that sounded good and the fact that they serve every item all day long (including breakfast!) is a win for us all. After you order, you can take your seat and they'll bring the food out to you. We found a seat in their cute little covered area that's attached to the main coffee shop. I never knew it was there! With a chalk board wall, plenty of seats, and a bit of privacy away from other guests + shield from the hot sun, this is a perrrrrrrrfect place to take a meeting and I kind of don't want to spill the beans because I want to keep it as my little secret! Man, when the sandwich came out, it took the experience to a whole 'nother level. I loved everything about it and my chai tea latte was perfect. Just goes to show, if you don't love a restaurant the first time, order something else the next time you go before you completely write them off! read more

During a recent quick trip through Richmond, I scoped out some coffee shop options and ended up here. Overall we were really impressed with our visit. The weather was great so we were excited to grab a table outside to enjoy our drinks and food. I had an iced mocha and it had FOUR espresso shots in it. It was supremely delicious and I think about it often.... We also tried their donuts and ham/cheese croissant which were fantastic. My one small complaint is that they don't really have a food menu visible, so of course being newbs we didn't know they had breakfast sandwiches and delicious looking oatmeal until folks at nearby tables sat down with them. We definitely would've gone with those options but only we're aware of the bakery case in front. With that said, service was friendly and I thought the spot was super cute. Lamplighters was just okay. I'm not a coffee fan so I didn't try their coffee. I noticed a lot of delicious sounding vegan food in their menu so I decided to give them a try. I got the tofu breakfast sandwich and was pretty disappointed. The food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. It tasted like something I could make at home, nothing special. I was expecting a lot with the reviews, but the food was one note and more on the bland side. $9 for a breakfast sandwich is a bit overpriced, especially when it comes with nothing else. I added vegan bacon to the sandwich, which was $1.50, so still overpriced. If this is what the sandwich looks like with the vegan bacon, then I imagine the original sandwich is worse. My sandwich only had the vegan bacon and the tofu scramble; there was nothing to break up the soft texture. The place seemed busy, so maybe their coffee is the go to. It is small so might have a hard time finding somewhere to sit. Grab coffee here then get your breakfast somewhere else! The place looked cool but I'd never try them again because the food was such a let down. read more

Very friendly staff and delicious breakfast sandwiches! One of my favorite egg sandwiches is the maple sriracha glazed sausage! Most of their egg sandwiches are $5.75 and served on a toasted bun. I think next time I order it I'll ask if they can put it on a bagel. Their coffee isn't my favorite when it comes to what Richmond has to offer, but they have a few different varieties and keep out a water jug sitting out with cups which I always appreciate. A selling point for me is the parking spots out front - definitely nice to not have to find street parking, especially if you're running in to pick up something quick! read more

No air conditioning (well, they have individual units but you can't feel anything), so that sucks for summer. But a nice selection of egg and lunch sandwiches. I had The Quilt, which was good. But I asked the cashier what kind of bread it came on and he said ciabatta, but it was just regular toast (which scratches the top of my mouth). And I asked for the red onion on the side, but there were still bits in the sandwich. I also ordered a fruit plate and again, I asked the cashier what kind of fruit and he said "bananas....", but no bananas. Let me preface this review with: the food was fine. That's not what caused my experience to move steadily downhill with each passing moment. The coffee was also fine, and the service was fine. However..... First, they gave away my meal to someone else. I was waiting outside....waiting and waiting, watching everyone around me get their food. When I asked, I was informed that there was a "long line in the kitchen." When I began to tell them that everyone who ordered within 10 minutes after me was already eating, someone told me that they gave my meal to someone else. They brought me a new one, crisis averted, kind of (though I don't usually enjoy having to hunt for my food). Then, they're clearly animal friendly, because not only were there about 4 pit bulls around the picnic tables at one point (barking and snarling at each other....very 8 mile), there's a large garbage can on the patio that seems to house a large, obnoxious family of flies. I wasn't sure if we bus our own tables or not, and when I asked, the cashier pointed me towards the dish bins. Guess so.....It was only after bussing our own dishes that an employee came around collecting dirty dishes. Cool. Finally, when a table of people lit up cigarettes behind us, it was definitely time to leave. It made me long for Ohio, where they've outlawed smoking in public places. Hands down the best coffee in Richmond. And the food's pretty yummy, too. They offer deviled eggs as a side- totally wins points in my book. They have the perfect amount of creaminess and the flavor packs a punch. The mac & cheese-which was a special when I ordered it, so I don't think it's on their regular menu- is scrumptious. It's made with gouda AND cheddar and melted to perfection. BUT Lamplighter loses a star for two very specific reasons. First, the seating is very limited. Last time I was there, it was completely packed (awesome for the business, not too great for someone wanting a table!) so I felt like a hawk waiting to swoop in on the next available seat. Although there is an enclosed porch, it's not too useful on very cold days. Second, after sitting inside Lamplighter for a few hours, you might end up smelling of food the rest of the day.
